Fun Faux Locs For The Summer Season

I love Summer!  It’s the season for fun and sun and even some water play. It’s also the season to try something new with our hair, while the weather warms and we get ready for festivals, summer vacations and graduation. Some of us might dabble with a little bit of color, I’m on that bandwagon too and have been perusing the Target isles looking at my color choices.

Sometimes though I think about something a little more dramatic, funky and different, nothing permanent, it doesn’t have to be permanent as Summer never is so take a little gander at trying a new look that’s sure to turn heads and even get you some extra smiles.

I am talking about faux locs girls, faux locs are creating locs with extensions* that are a temporary style choice without the commitment or the work. They are a great protective style for the Summer as we embark on more time in the damaging sun and in the water. Not to mention they are super hot right now as you can find celebrities like Willow Smith and Erykah Badu rocking them and not to mention they look authentic and ever so sexy.

How to get the look – Professional or DIY

There are two ways to go about rocking this very artistic expression of natural hair. You can have them professionally installed or you can go the cheaper route by doing them yourself. Going to a loctician is the expensive route because the stylist must buy the hair, hand form each Loc and attach each loc to your sectioned hair.

Additionally going to a loctition means that you will have to get your locs done in one sitting, and that can be one long day. The upside of going to the loctician is that professionally done Locs that will fool even your family and they will last longer.

The other way is to do them yourself, and yes it can be done. It may be harder to do as with any detailed style especially when working on the back of your hair and finding the right hair to create the style as well.  The up side of the DIY route is the serious cut in price and the fact that you can take your time and complete it over days by strategically styling your hair to only show the completed Locs by wearing scarves, hats and headbands*.

There is really only one downside to doing it yourself, and that is they is not having them look as authentic as going to a loctician but as you know many DIYers have a real handle on it and can make them look amazingly real.

Want to see how you can do it yourself, check out these two videos below, the first is a short version done by the beautiful Sadora J, watch it below:

And the second is a longer version done by the beautiful Donedo, watch both, it cant hurt right?

Just know that no matter what route you choose there is maintenance that goes along with this style as any hairstyle if you want to keep your tresses healthy. You must keep your hair and the added hair moisturized especially when using synthetic hair.

Overall faux locs are really cool, you can also do just about anything you can do with real locs and it is a great way see if you want the real thing without committing to it. It’s win win all the way around.
