Trimming Your Natural Hair Using The Curly Girl Method

We all know MahoganyCurls right? She is the new ambassador for Shea Moisture* which is totally awesome and we have loved her hair forever and day. In the below video Jess demonstrates how she has always cut her hair, and it really has worked for her from what we see on her channel.

There are a few simple additives that come with cutting your hair using the curly girl method. The first thing is, your hair is cut dry and with your normal shrinkage, the curls are cut individually so that you can preserve your length as well as get rid of any damaged pieces.

Here is what we like

You preserve your length – Clearly in the video Jess does not cut alot of her hair as she goes through individually, so we love that .

You get to go through your hair thoroughly – This is a pretty long process so you are literally taking the time to go through your hair to trim it and look for split ends

Here is what we did not like

It can be time consuming – To be honest the time it takes to go through your hair can be a turn off but you have to make the time if you choose to to do this

You can’t possibly catch everything? – If I just watch the video it seemed as if it was just trimming to trim. In other words if you examine your hair in reality, some strands might be longer than others so you are only trimming the longest strands. What about knots that are higher up on the strand? With your hair clumped are you able to really see any damaged strands?

The curly girl method has its benefits overall, your hair is always hydrated and never stripped which is great for curly hair. If your hair is healthy then the need to trim or cut off damage diminishes, so maybe it is OK to just trim the ends of your hair to keep the ends looking sharp and not straggly. Watch the video and make your own determination on if this method of trimming can work for you.
