Top 10 Most Overpriced Natural Hair Products

Top 10 Most Overpriced Natural Hair Products

What is expensive? What would you call ridiculous for a natural hair product? What you may see as expensive may be just right or rather cheap to another natural. Price is subjective. Everyone has different circumstances and preferences for instance a struggling college student, like my daughter would NEVER pay more than $5 dollars for a hair product.

I on the other hand have no qualms spending $20 for one, but don’t get me wrong I am not rich, nor am I 19. I am, however, willing to pay more for what I think is important.

OK, I am losing focus. Despite price being subjective there was a time, not too long ago, when price really did not matter to a natural. Stay with me here. We had to use what we could find or make, and if there were only a few products on the market that you could use, then you bought them. Point blank.

When I went Natural almost 10 years ago, there was Carol’s Daughter and Miss Jessie’s and Aveda around, or at least they were the ones I was aware of. I was so happy to have ANYTHING that I paid, ANYTHING to have them.

Fast forward to today, and you can find several stellar Natural hair products for under $5 bucks! Now, with so many brands, the law of economics dictates that prices should be driven down overall, but there are still some brands out there that are kind of high; I mean really high, and they are booming!

I am not knocking their hustle, nor am I saying they are not worth the pricey price tag. If my Holy Grail deep conditioner* jumped in price, I would grimace. However, at the end of the day, I would pay for it because it is a good product, and worth the extra cash to me.

Now, I get that price is subjective, and I get that most Natural hair products have become less expensive, but there are brands out there that are higher on the food chain when it comes to price. In all fairness, they tell you why with marketing and reviews. Nevertheless, we are going to share the 10 most overpriced Natural hair products that we think are good, but could knock that price down a tad.

Ojon

Ojon hair products

Ojon has several specialized lines, but the main focus surrounds Ojon oil, and how it will restore your hair’s health. I have heard great things about this line, but they are really expensive!

Rare Blend™ Infusion Shampoo $30 for an 8.1 oz bottle.

Rare Blend™ Deep Conditioner* $34 for 5 oz bottle.

Rare Blend Oil Total Tair Therapy, $35 for 1.5 oz bottle.

Ojon™ Revitalizing Mist Original $48 for 16 oz bottle.

Aveda

Aveda hair products

This line has been around for years, and they have a great Be Curly hair line, but they are rather pricey. Now the line is good, and they have several other lines that work great for natural hair, but you have to determine if the product is worth the price.

Be Curly™ Shampoo $21 for 8 oz bottle.

Be Curly™ Curl Enhancer $24 for 6.7 oz.

Be Curly™ Style-Prep™ $24 for 3.4 oz.

Be Curly™ Kit $90 for shampoo, conditioner, Curl Enhancer and Style Prep.

Miss Jessie’s

Miss jessies hair products

This was the first line I tried that really worked for my hair about 7 years ago, and I was hooked on the Curly Pudding. I was spending a ton of cash on it, but at the time it was so worth it. Many Naturals have balked at their super expensive products and in all fairness. In response, they have brought out less expensive items in the past couple of years.

Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding $38 for 16 oz. jar.

Miss Jessies Stretch Silkening Creme $38 for 16 oz. jar.

Miss Jessie’s a Super Soft Styling Lotion Pillow Soft Curls $26.99 for 8.5 oz tube.

Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls $32 for an 8 oz. tube.

Carol’s Daughter

Carols daughter hair products

Another product line that has been around for years and also has bath and body products. The one with celebrity spokespersons for the line, like Jada Pinket-Smith. I have heard great things about this line, but they do run high nonetheless.

Monoi Repairing Hair Mask $22.40 for 7 oz bottle.

Monoi Repairing Anti-Breakage Spray, $16.80 for 5 oz jar.

Monoi Sacred Strenghting Serum, $21 for 1.7 oz bottle.

Hair Milk Original Leave-in Moisturizer, $12 for 8oz bottle.

Ouidad

Ouidad hair products

They call themselves the Curl Experts, and they have really great products, but you are going to pay for it. They have curly salons around the country and are a treat to go to. They are definitely a salon brand.

Climate Control Frizz & Flyaway Fighter $22 for 4 oz bottle.

Curl Quencher Hydrafusion Intense Curl Cream, $26 for 5 oz bottle.

Clear Control Pomade, $27 for 4 oz bottle.

Shine Glaze Serum $21 for 2.5 oz bottle.

Kinky Curly

kinky curly hair products

I love this brand and use it often. Although I will pay whatever for it, I do understand some find it pricey. They have smaller jars now to accommodate that problem. I had to add them to the list because I know many find this line overpriced.

Kinky Curly Knot Today*, $12 for 8 oz bottle.

Kinky* Curly Curling Custard $29 for 16 oz jar.

Kinky* Curly Gloss Pomade, $10 for 2 oz canister.

Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo, $12 for 8 oz bottle.

DevaCurl

Deva curl hair products

Lorraine Massey, who co-wrote Curly Girl: The Handbook, owns this line. Although I love her book and her insight, this line is rather rich for my blood. I have heard really good things about it, but you are going to have to pay salon prices for this line.

DevaCurl No-Poo Quick Cleanser, $15.96 for 5 oz bottle.

DevaCurl No-Poo, $14.36 for 12 oz bottle.

DevaCurl Shine Spray $19.96 for 4 oz bottle.

DevaCurl Heaven in Hair, $19.96 for 8 oz jar.

WEN

Wen hair products

This line popped up and made many Naturals and Curlies quite happy about everything, BUT the price. Whenever someone uses it, they love it, but you have to be willing to pay a hefty price and order it.

Wen Sweet Almond* Mint Cleansing Conditioner, $18 for 6 oz bottle.

Wen Sweet Almond Mint Styling Creme, $24 for 6 oz bottle.

WEN Fall Apple Spice Cleansing Conditioner, $29.90 for 16 oz bottle.

WEN Sweet Almond* Mint Re Moist Intensive Hair Treatment, $$28.95 for 4 oz canister.

Mixed Chicks

Mixed chicks hair proudcts

A line that caters to women of multi-cultural heritage, or mixed Curlies that need products just for them. They are kind of on the pricey side, but they have a huge following.

Mixed Chicks* Leave-in Conditioner*, $20 for 10 oz bottle.

Mixed Chicks Replenishing Oil, $18 for 6 oz bottle.

Mixed Chicks Straightening Serum, $20 for 4 oz bottle.

Mixed Chicks* Deep Conditioner*, $14 for 8 oz jar.

Jessicurls

Jessicurl hair products

A really great haircare line that caters to all Curlies and Naturals, but can be a tad bit on the pricey side for some of our more budget-conscious Curlies and Naturals.

Jessicurl Aloeba Daily Conditioner, $13.56 for 8 oz bottle.

Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner*, $13.56 for 8 oz. bottle.

Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel, $12.71 for 8 oz bottle.

Jessicurl Stimulating Scalp Massage Oil, $9.56 for 2 oz bottle.
