5 Strange Products Women Are Using To Grow Longer Hair And Why They Work

Let’s admit it; we’ve all tried to grow our hair to lengths we’ve never seen before. Vitamins*, hair serums, shampoos, and even some conditioners claim that they will give you long healthy hair in 5 minutes. Obviously, not all of those products live up to their advertisements, or we would all be walking around looking like Pocahontas by now.

The Natural Hair Community is probably the biggest offender of trying to grow long, luxurious hair. For most women, doing the big chop means starting over from scratch, and aiming for the stars.

It also means that you will have to figure out what you’re going to do with your new hair until it grows to your desired length. To some, this isn’t such a big deal, but it may have some big choppers Googling hair growing potions like crazy.

But how far are you willing to go to get the long hair that you so badly desire? Here are five strange things that women are using to achieve long lengths:

1. Shapley’s MTG Oil

This oil is a bacterial and fungal oil that is regularly used for horses. The oil can also be used to treat dry skin, and other skin conditions on dogs and livestock. However, women have been using MTG oil on their scalp to grow their hair. You heard correctly; a product that is only intended for animal use is willingly being used by humans.

Shapely’s product description claims that a majority of horse owners  see as much as 3 inches of hair growth on their horses tails and manes per month. This tidbit alone is probably what prompted people to apply the product to their own scalp. Women claim to achieve great hair growth by using this product consistently.

Because the oil has anit-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, it kills off fungus that would otherwise stunt hair growth. Unfortunately, you may not be so interested after the first application. Shapely’s MTG oil has a strong odor, and may leave you smelling like bacon.

2. Monistat Cream

This sounds absolutely crazy, but women are absolutely putting vaginal yeast infection cream on their scalps. The product has been known to slow down hair loss and grow hair longer. Miconazole, which has anti-fungal properties, is the active ingredient in the feminine product.

Miconazole’s chemical structure is very similar to Ketoconazole, an anti-fungal agent, which is known for stopping male and female pattern baldness. Because of this key ingredient, women are seeing less hair breakage, and more hair growing after using the cream over a period of time. Buyer beware, Miconazole has been reported to cause headaches and burning when applied to the scalp.

3. Athlete’s Foot Cream

Like Monistat, Athelte’s Foot cream also has the anti-fungal agent, Miconazole, in its ingredients. One of the side effects listed on the product’s packaging is excessive hair growth.

This warning was probably an open invitation for hair growth fanatics everywhere. Some women claim to have seen two inches of hair growth a month when using the cream regularly.

4. Horse Conditioner – Mega Tek

Mega Tek is a cell rebuilder for equine animals’ hooves and coats. It can also be used to strengthen your dog’s hair, and it reduces breakage. I don’t know what it is about horse products, but they are very popular amongst the long hair community.

Mega Tek claims to grow animal hair longer and much faster than similar products. Mega Tek’s packaging states that it has “special” proteins in its ingredients that encourage hair growth. Unlike MTG oil, this leave-in treatment is lightweight, and smells like coconut*. Fortunately for you, the company makes it clear that the product is safe to use on humans.

5. MSM Cream

Originally MSM cream and pills were intended to be used by people who have painful issues with their joints. It’s found in plants and animals, but can also be made in a laboratory for medicinal purposes. MSM, also known as Methylsulfonylmethane, can be applied topically, or it can be ingested in tablet or capsule form.

People who were taking the supplement for their joints noticed that their hair seemed to be growing thicker and faster. Apparently, someone decided to experiment with the cream, and applied it to their scalp. Their results were faster growing and thicker hair. Some women even claim that MSM loosened their curl pattern.

This may or may not be a benefit for some. MSM* aids in tissue repair, and some doctors state that it is loaded with collagen. These facts alone may be the reason why MSM* aids in hair growth. Collagen is what keeps your hair and nails bountiful. If you’re going to experiment with MSM, be sure to drink plenty of water. It’s been known to cause headaches, if you’re low on water intake.

As with any supplement or hair growth product, you should always use caution, and do your research. If you’re unsure about an ingredient in a product, ask your doctor. Long hair should never take precedence over your health.
