Tracee Ellis Ross Inspired Twist Out

I think that every naturalista from a small curly girl to an older woman who has been natural her entire life can appreciate the beauty that is Tracee Ellis Ross’s hair. Her beautiful textured hair has been revered and loved since her days on the TV show Girlfriends, and women are still trying to recreate her look. Which leads me to this tutorial, which will give you a beautiful, bouncy Tracee Ellis Ross inspired twist out.

What You Need:

Spray bottle filled with water

Oil

Fine tooth comb

Wide tooth comb* or Denman brush*

Satin lined foam rollers

Soft set styler

Gel of choice

In the video, she does this style on hair stretched from a braid out. Your hair should be dry and stretched, so if you’re short on time and comfortable with using heat, you can blow dry your hair before starting this style.

Use the fine tooth/rat tail comb* to part your hair on one side (either left or right, it’s up to you). Separate your hair into sections and pin away the sections that you aren’t working with. Lightly dampen your hair with the spray bottle, but don’t drench your hair in water. Run it through your strands to distribute. Use the oil to seal in moisture. You can add a lightweight styler for added shine (and to complete your LOC Method!).

Begin twisting your hair. By the time you’re done, you should have around 8-10 twists. What makes this style different from a regular twist out is that she uses satin lined foam rollers to set the curls. Leave your hair in the satin rollers until it’s fully dried.

Afterwards, take down the rollers and unravel your twists. Fluff and separate to your liking. If it seems that your ends still don’t have the perfect curl, you can re-roll the ends of your hair for a few more minutes. Your final result should be a fluffy, voluminous, and soft twist out.

This style is super cute and you should already have most of the products you need. It looks really nice on longer natural hair, but it can be adapted for ladies with shorter hair. It’s a different spin on a classic look. And you’re channeling your inner Tracee Ellis Ross. How awesome is that?
