FotorCreated

So everyone has hair disasters, woes, and setbacks. I mean, it happens ladies! That’s why it is called a hair journey. You win some and lose some, but you learn from the troubles and duds of the losses and mistakes to create beautiful roses of tomorrow.

Sometimes we all need help from each other to continue on our own hair journey. So what we are going to do is help you with your hair disasters, woes, and setbacks all in one article. Here are some of the common cries for help that we get on a daily basis:

Dear BHI,

My hair will not grow! No matter what I do, I just can’t grow my hair passed neck length. I’ve tried products, vitamins*, different styles…everything! Help me please!

Sincerely, Been Bald Since Birth

Dear Been Bald Since Birth,

I always say a great ratio of total hair care is 30% products and styles and 70% TLC for your tresses. Are you delicate when styling your hair? When in a protective style, you do forget to care for your hair?

Does your ends graze your clothes or does your hair get caught on your jewelry? Try not to think so much about the products, vitamins*, and the styling options you have done. But think about how (your actions) how you care for your hair and the time in between.

If you are a relatively healthy person your hair is always growing, so growth isn’t the problem, maintenance is really where your focus should be. If you want more information on length retention check out this post and this one.

Sincerely, BHI

Dear BHI,

When I straighten my hair, it is an oily mess! My flat iron* has gunk and muck all in it and my hair is not even all the way straight. I have to wash my hair all over again every time I flat iron* my hair. Any tips for my flat ironing woes?

Sincerely, Frying My Hair

Dear Frying My Hair,

Are your tools clean before flat ironing your hair? Are you flat ironing dirty hair? Are the products you are using heavy or are you heavy handed with your products?

Make sure everything from your hair to your hair tools are clean before you begin flat ironing your hair. If not, you will re-deposit oils*, skin cells, and shed/broken hairs back into your own hair. Also, be light with your products. Use a light serum or a heat tamer spray for flat ironing, but be light. Try these tips and you will be on the path for beautiful flat ironed hair.

My hair is so dry! I just can’t seem to keep my hair moisturized. I don’t want to have so many products in my hair because they will weigh my hair down. But I can’t just use my leave-in without my hair become crazy dry within a few hours. What can I do?

Sincerely, It’s The Sa-Hair-Ra

Dear It’s The Sa-Hair-Ra,

Dry hair is a sure sign of hair that is in distress. To solve the problem permanently you have to start a good hair regimen and learn how to care for your hair properly. Take a look at your regimen and ensure that you have these components: Water based products, a deep conditioning* routine that will put the much needed moisture back into your hair to keep it from being so dry.

Finally make sure you are sealing and protecting your hair and ends weekly, check out this post and this one for more information on how to combat dryness.

Sincerely, BHI

Dear BHI,

My hair falls out after my long term style. I thought my hair was supposed to grow when I don’t touch it? I want to grow my hair, but how can I when it is falling out???

Sincerely, I Keep On Falling…Says My Hair

Dear I Keep On Falling…Says My Hair,

Unless you are catching hand fulls of hair (if so see your doctor), there is nothing to worry about. All of the hair you see in your hands, wide tooth comb*, and on the sink are your shed hairs. I know it’s so easy to panic when you see so much hair come out of your head at once, but remember that 100 hair strands shed per day.

If you have had a long term protective style you will have even more shed hair than you would daily. If your strands that are “falling” out your hair are long with a white bulb on one end, then that’s a shed hair. Continue to take the shed hairs out to keep them from tangling with the hair on your head. If you need more information on shedding, look at this post , this one and this one.

222222222Dear BHI,

I am a newbie natural and I love my naps. My stylist says that I need a relaxer for her to do my hair! What do I do?

Sincerely, No Lye Please

Dear No Lye Please,

Simple answer: get to know your natural hair AND change hair dressers. There are so many YouTube videos and natural hair websites that can give you the tools and tips to care for your own hair you really do not have to put up with any unnecessary demands from anyone.

But if you do want to get your pampered, check online to see where natural hair salons are near you, you can even look at reviews and get references for really great stylists. If your stylist can’t/won’t do your natural hair, that’s her right, and you have a right to simply move on.

Dear BHI,

My hair is bra strap length but my shrinkage is just past my neck! I want to show off my hard work without using heat. What can I do?

Sincerely, Shrinkage Is Real

Dear Shrinkage Is Real,

There are many ways to elongate your hair, but you must be willing to put the work in. There are numerous heat-less stretching techniques you can try including, two strand twists, flat braids (cornrows), banding, threading, roller sets, and bunning.

Depending on the style and texture you are going for, these stretching techniques will give you what you needed to show off your BSL. Check out this post and this one for more help with heatless stretching.

Sincerely, BHI

Dear BHI,

I just can’t seem to find the right products for my hair! Some products are too light, others make my hair stringy, and the rest dry my hair out. I’m spending way too much money on products that don’t work! Help!!!!

Sincerely, Hurting Pockets For Hair Products

Dear Hurting Pockets For Hair Products,

First things first, stop buying products. When you purchase so many products and use them on your hair, you are subjecting your hair to product buildup and you will have no idea which product worked when your hair came out just right. All you need is a shampoo/conditioner for washing, deep conditioner*, a leave in, an oil for sealing and maybe a styler.

Make it simple on yourself. Any of those products you purchased are bound to work. You just need to give the products you have a chance for your hair to respond to them. As for the extra products you may not use, you can swap with out with your friends or have a girl’s day spa. But whatever you do, don’t buy more products. If you need help with being a product junkie, check out this post or this one.

Dear BHI,

I don’t get the hair charts and types! I’ve been natural for 3 years now and anything I read or watch talks about 3b or 4a/b. I’m so confused with hair typing!

Sincerely, 4A/B…Or Maybe 4A1/4 and 4B3/4???

Dear 4A/B…Or Maybe 4A1/4 and 4B3/4???,

It can get confusing when you are trying to learn more about your hair with types and textures and how to care for it. I’ll give you two answers: 1. What you can do is wet your hair completely with water and check one strand of your curls.

Get your hair chart out and check to see which matches your curl pattern. Do this on the top, middle, and bottom. Your hair can actually be 4 A/B, if that’s what you see

2. Don’t put too much stress on the hair charts and curl patterns. Just use the products and routines that work for your hair and continue on with your hair journey. If ever you want to forget about hair charts though, check out this post.

Sincerely, BHI
