One of the things that we tend to worry about especially during a long term transition is styling. Specifically what styles you can use to blend your natural growing hair with your relaxed ends.

Personally I prefer to try no heat styles while I transition I do not feel comfortable enough to do a big chop at the beginning of my hair journey so styling is my top priority next to hair care.

With that said I have three main go to styles that I tend to use to blend my transitioning hair without heat. I wanted to share them with you, so with that said here are 3 styles you can use to blend your natural and relaxed hair as you transition.

Bantu Knot Set

Bantu knots are a great style and they do not require any styling tools! There are two ways to create a bantu knot:

Option 1

Grab a section of hair and detangle it fully. Add a moisturizer/styler/gel of your choice, and begin to twist your hair around itself in one piece. It will begin to get tighter the more that you twist, and it will eventually form a ‘knot’ at the root. If your bantu knot seems to fall out, secure it with a bobby pin.

Option 2

Grab a section of hair, detangle and add product like above. Do a normal two strand twist BEFORE repeating the other steps above. A hanging bantu knot is pretty much the same thing, but it helps you blend your hair in styles like twist and braid outs without using other styling tools.

Flexi Rods*

Flexi rods* are a great styling tool to create beautiful spiral curls. They may seem a little hard to use at first, but there are tons of Youtube videos out there that explain how to install flexi rods*.

You can get them in both small and large sizes- it all depends on how large you want your curls to be. Flexi rod sets can be done on both wet and dry hair, but you may notice longer curls if you try this style on stretched hair. Here are a few necessary essentials to achieve the perfect flexi rod* set:

Spray bottle with water (to dampen hair as needed)

Moisturizer/Leave in Conditioner*

Styling Gel

Oil

To achieve soft, shiny, and bouncy curls, apply your products using the LCO (Liquid, Cream, Oil) method instead of the LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) method. You will notice that you curls won’t have a hard or crunchy gel feel than if you would have done it otherwise.

Sleeping with flexi rods* can be really a little annoying, so if you’re not afraid to use heat you can it under a hair dryer* for a while instead. To preserve your gorgeous flexi rod* set, pull your hair up into a pineapple and keep your edges neat by putting on a satin scarf before you go to bed.

Perm Rod Sets

Perm rods* sets are similar to flexi rod* sets, however the curls are tighter depending on the size of the rod. The first difference between a flexi rod* set and perm rod set is that flexi rods* are soft, long rolls, while perm rods are plastic, hard, and have small security device that secures the rod once you place it in your hair.

You can use the same products in the same order to create your perm rod set as the flexi rod set. This style can also be done on both wet and dry hair. There are a variety of perm rod sizes, and you can use a mixture of them to create different styles (like a Faux Tapered Cut)

When you install perm rods you can use end papers to keep your ends together and they make the take down much easier than with out the papers.

It is important to remember to take down all of your perm rods* the same way, because some of your curls will come out looking a bit different depending on the way you pull or tug. Because there are some pieces on perm rods* that snag, you want to be extra careful that you don’t break off your hair.

Just like  flexi rods*, perm rods* are great for your entire head or for blending just your relaxed ends when you braid or twist your natural hair and add the perm rod to just the relaxed portion, this is known as a twist and curl, or braid and curl.

All three of these styles make it possible to blend relaxed or transitioning ends with your gorgeous new growth. They may seem a little tricky, but with practice and the perfect set of products, you can make these styles look perfect! The best part is that these are still great styles once you return to your natural hair.
