Would You Try It? A Critical Look At The EZ Out Weave

Have you seen this new product around social media lately? I recently got wind of it and while I do not wear weaves* now, you never know I might get inspired one day so I was curious.

I thought this was kind of interesting, put simply the company has made it possible for you to remove your sew in weave* without using scissors, blades of seam rippers.

They developed a special type of thread that is supposedly fortified with essential oils* that fortify the hair and promote health hair growth. Before I get into why that is all hype, the real beauty is in the liquid that literally melts the threads away so you can remove the weave*.

My first question was, what in the world is in that thing that can disintegrate thread but not my hair? According to the website the solution has been tested and is PH balanced. That is all well and good but I want to know the deets on the ingredients so I checked the website and did not have to look far, the ingredients are:

N Butyl Acetate, Propylene Carbonate, Coconut Oil*, Banana Oil, Grapefruit Oil and Lemon Oil.

None of these ingredients at face value seem to have melting properties but I also was not sure what “N-Butyl Acetate” was so I did a little Google search and this is what I found:

n-Butyl acetate, also known as butyl ethanoate, is an organic compound commonly used as a solvent in the production of lacquers and other products. It is a colorless flammable liquid. Butyl acetate is found in many types of fruit, where along with other chemicals it imparts characteristic flavors and has a sweet smell of banana or apple.

That means it is naturally occurring and while it is used as a solvent it is typically found in apples, so that cant be harmful right? Wrong, depends on how its used so personally I am still not sure.

The other ingredient I had trouble with is Propylene Carbonate, and since I am no chemist, I still am having trouble pinpointing exactly what it is since it seems to be a combination of chemical compounds specifically, carbon dioxide and propylene created to form Propylene Carbonate. With a bit more digging I found this little gem:

This post focuses on the use of PC [Propylene Carbonate] in cleaning and degreasing formulations. However, there are several other recognized uses of this material in other applications. For example, PC is prevalent in chemical intermediates, paints/coatings, dyes, fibers, as a reactive diluent in urethane systems, wood binder resins, safer alternative in cosmetic/personal care formulations, and as electrolyte solvents for lithium batteries (among many more).

While that little piece of information is not concrete I still cant say for sure that the combination in the solution can disintegrate only thread. it was enough for me to at least want to think twice about the EZ Out weave.

Oh and that little hype thing about the thread promoting hair growth, if you been following us for a while, ya’ll should know that it is highly unlikely that a little oil in some thread will promote hair growth, if only it were that simple.
