3 Reasons Sea Salt Can Be Beneficial for Your Hair [Recipe Included]

natural hair at the beachWhen was the last time you were at the beach? Obviously with people experiencing massive amounts of snow all over the world these days many of us are dreaming of beach days and would much rather shovel sand and build sand castles than dig our car out from under snow just to make it to work on time.

When you think about the beach and your hair, you think about how amazingly curly your hair gets after getting in contact with the salt water. Sea hair is no joke, it can look amazing but to be honest the water can be super drying as well especially if you haven’t conditioned your hair before hitting the beach.

Knowing this, I was a little more than curious about a product line called the Garly Whale, that supposedly gives you really awesome beach hair.

Elle from Quest for the Perfect Curl did an outstanding review on the product line which was great and all, but is there really something to consider when you think about the effects of actual sea salt and hair.

To be clear, sea salt from the beach is a bit rough around the edges and just bottling it and spraying your hair with it is not recommended.

But refined sea salt is really what we are referring to when we look at the benefits of sea salt and your hair. This sea salt has been processed a bit and if you purchase a product with sea salt as the main ingredient you will notice other great additives like natural oils* and extracts to enhance it and make it even more nourishing than just bottled up beach water.

Lets get into the benefits

1. Hair growth

Of course when you hear that a product can stimulate growth the first thing you want to know is… how? There is only a one way to influence growth topically and that is through stimulation of the hair follicles. Massaging the scalp with sea salt can aid in blood circulation to the scalp, and the salt strengthens the hair follicles.

Elle, mentioned this in her video and for me this is totally a plus, even more so than the growth. Sea salt can absorb excess oil form your hair making it appear fresh and so clean again.

When you work out you might get a bit of build up from the sweat so a sea salt based product can remove some of the buildup from the strands, giving them life again. Kind of like a dry shampoo, but way more awesome.

3. Gets rid of dandruff

Sea salt when rubbed on your scalp can loosen the flakes on your scalp making it easier for you to get rid of them. The salt does not actually cure dandruff but the stimulation helps you to remove it. It helps that sea salt is chalk full of minerals as well, which is great for your hair and scalp.

Additionally, since sea salt absorbs oil then you will not have excess oil on the scalp that can create a great breeding ground for fungus and dandruff.

How to make your very own beachy salt spray

If you know me then you know, I am anti product junkie, and even though certain products intrigue me there is a 50% chance I won’t buy it and I will try to find some way to make one myself if possible.

Since most of us have textured hair already the idea of using a sea salt spray to make beach waves or texture can simply be done with a braid out or a couple twists here and there.

We certainly do not need help with texture but if you still want to know how to make a sea salt spray for yourself it would be rather incomplete of me to not share a recipe of some sort, so here goes.

What you will need

A spray bottle

8- 10 oz of water

sea salt (you can find sea salt that is very fine so that it is easier to mix)

cheap conditioner or leave in

a little hair gel – use one that is a bit runny, the kind that gives you some hold but not a lot, but you keep it around for those days you just need just a little something something.

Essential oils* – tea tree oil*, ylanh ylang or anything that soothes the scalp or aids with scalp health

Now that you have all your ingredients just add everything to your spray bottle and shake what your momma gave ya.

Ensure that everything is fully combined, if you find that your conditioner and gel aren’t mixing well, heat the mix up for a few seconds and shake again.

You can use your spray after a work out or any time that you want to add more texture to your hair without the commitment of one twist or braid.

To say the least, this is all very interesting and worth a try if you are bored with your usual spray concoctions. Comment below if you have ever incorporated sea salt into your regimen.
