7 Ways You Can Celebrate a Milestone in Your Hair Journey

Natural hair girlAs I sat down to think about what I want to achieve for 2015, I recognized that I had made it to two years on my healthy hair journey.

Usually I don’t do resolutions because frankly I never got much done that way, but the last resolution I made was to whip my hair back into shape. Then it dawned on me that I had actually accomplished a New Year’s resolution.

Like several of us here at BHI when I started my goal was length, but I had learnt quickly that length is a result of health, so I buckled down and two years later I can boast of success!

Of course this called for a celebration of some sort and then it got me thinking about you. Perhaps you are at the beginning of your journey, perhaps it’s your first year, second year or some other threshold has been reached with regards to your tresses.

After such dedication and commitment, you are entitled to some type of celebration so here are some suggestions on how you can celebrate a milestone in your HHJ.

Get a good trim

If it has been a while since you invested in a trim, do it. A trim will get rid of the weathered ends, knots and splits that can seriously hamper your length retention if length is what you are after.

If it’s all about health, you must admit that splits indicate the result of deficiencies and damaged areas; not exactly the poster child of a healthy head of hair. Therefore those most concerned with health should get some satisfaction after a snip session that is totally warranted.

Get it Professionally Done

I know that for many who have taken the care of their hair into their own hands going my suggestion to go to salon is like a curse word. For those who are not opposed to the idea, going to a good salon can be quite exhilarating. It can be like a spa treatment for your hair.

The anticipation leading up to the actual visit add to the air of excitement one gets when celebrating something special, so take your time researching salons, scope them out if you have to, then make the decision best for you.

Add Some Color

If you are not averse to color and you’ve been toying with the idea, go for it. I do suggest you wait until your hair is healthy enough to take on that process.

Above all, I suggest using natural dyes such as henna* which also happens to strengthen hair. A little color can provide such a great lift. You don’t even have to go full-on if you are not sure how you will like it.

Natural hair womanSimplify Your Regimen

Let’s face it, there can be quite a bit of effort and time invested in tailoring a regimen to your hair. Often at the beginning of the healthy hair journey you want to include everything because you don’t know your hair well enough yet.

After sticking to it for a year or so you may find that you can simplify it a bit so things can be easier. The simpler your regimen the better the chance that it will work effectively since you won’t be stressed out trying to keep up with the number of steps involved.

Do a Luxurious Treatment

There are no shortage of treatments you can try. Whether you need moisture or protein at the time of your milestone, we have several recipes for you right here as well. You may want to experiment with Cassia* Obovata, or a chocolate mask, whatever your choice as long as it benefits you and ties into your schedule go for it!

Splurge on Some Good Tools or Products

No doubt the top brands of products you hear about and the tools can cost a small fortune. Consider it an investment to yourself and your dedication to your hair journey and get you some products or tools or both! (BTW if any of you know of any sites that sell good stainless steel scissors let a sista’ know in the comments below.)

Even if you are into whipping up your own stuff I am sure you would much rather the authentic ingredients like raw Shea butter* straight from Africa.

Perhaps you can only afford one thing, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is the feeling you will get when you finally acquire that thing that’s gonna help whip your hair into the chic, edgy dos that you love.

Get Some Accessories

Sometimes all you need is a strategically placed bow for that wow factor. You can seek out some spunky looking bows, headbands* and scarves.

Then again, who says those are the only kinds of accessories? Jewelry does wonders for transforming a look. Just think about it: a fierce fro can be even more ‘frotastic’ with bold colored or brass hoops. Do what works for you.
