The Top 10 Hair Butters That Soften Natural Hair

I’m sure the purists would argue that only a whipped pure hard fat like cocoa butter*, shea butter* or even coconut oil* really qualifies as a hair butter but to most of us hair care enthusiasts, hair butters are those creamy in between products. Too thick to be considered a leave in conditioner* but not quite a plain oil either.

I don’t know about you but I love a good butter. So thick and luscious you can feel the nourishing goodness soften your hair. I like two types really, the one where the pure butter is so whipped that when you dip your fingers in it’s just like whipped cream but could double as grease.

The other type I like tends to be thick and creamy but it has water and other ingredients included in it and smells so amazing you end up using more than the dime size that the instructions call for.

If you have fine hair like mine, or even coarse hair you will find that a butter is light enough to keep your hair soft and moisturized without weighing it down, and strong enough to keep your hair supple without being too wispy.

Butters are also cool because like I mentioned some of them smell gooooood you almost want to eat them, and added to that they can do wonders for a girls hair game. But really all jokes aside, are butters* actually good for length retention?

Yes! Don’t worry, I will tell you why. The ends of your hair are of course the oldest parts of your hair so everyone with length goals tends to focus a lot of attention on the ends to try to preserve them and retain length month to month.

If you are eating well, getting lots of water in and moisturizing your hair often your hair will have moisture in it. Butters and oils* enter the equation to help you retain the moisture by trapping your water based ingredients in the strand.

When you strand loses its moisture it becomes dry and brittle and in most cases when starved of water long enough it will break off. When you add butters to your regimen you can retain the moisture in your hair longer which is what you need to do to get rid of dryness greatly reduce the breakage.

The way you use your butters in your regimen is just as important as the types of butters* you pick. All you have to remember is that you would add your butter to your hair last. In other words, you will spray or add your water based product to your hair, and then put your butter over that layer of liquid. Layering your product in this way guarantees maximum moisture retention which leads to maximum length retention.
