3 Frizz Fighting Tips for Natural Hair

Woman looking at her hairFrizz.. It happens to the best of us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a cute style, and it got ruined by excessive humidity, me sweating, or steam from my shower. The truth is, frizz is a given for many curly girls, and preventing it requires A LOT of moisture. Below are three tips to help you fight frizz.

Don’t towel dry

You may or may not already be aware of this depending on how far you are in your hair journey. Although towels help dry our hair really fast after a shower, they suck out more moisture than necessary and are a big cause of frizz.

Instead of using a towel the next time you wash your hair, use a t-shirt or micro finer towel as well. Your tresses will be way less dry.

Take down styles when hair is COMPLETELY dry

Has this happened to you before? There have been so many times when I spent hours trying to perfect a style (like a flat twist out or braid out) and it would look like a giant frizz ball if I took it down when my hair is still wet.

Try to avoid manipulating your hair too much at all when it’s wet, and when you do low maintenance styles make sure that it’s fully dry before you take your hair down.

Otherwise your hair will begin to get frizzy. This way, your style will set properly, the strands will have a chance to curl the way you want them to, AND you won’t have a ton of frizz. As a general rule of thumb for all curly girls, try to avoid chronic hands in hair syndrome!

Use oil when taking down styles

Woman unraveling twists

If you haven’t started doing this already, this is definitely something that you want to begin doing. Oils* are awesome, because in addition to sealing in moisture, they provide the right amount of slip to unravel styles without causing added frizz. Apply a small amount of oil to your fingertips before taking down any style.

You will notice increased shine and less frizz, because your hands won’t take away any moisture that was already there. Oil will coat hair, allowing it to stay smooth and shiny.

The best way to combat frizz is to consistently keep your hair moisturized. Condition often, invest in a good deep conditioner*, and experiment with different things like oil rinsing and pre-pooing. You will notice extra shine and way less frizz. Your styles will be defined and your curl definition will be on point!
