3 Styles And 3 Ways To Achieve Second Day Hair If You Can’t Pineapple

natural hairThis post is for the girls that really can’t do a pineapple at night but really want to. Believe me when I say I definitely understand what you are going through.

You do a bomb twist out or an elegant perm rod set, just to find out that you can’t pull all of your hair up in a pineapple like you see others doing on YouTube hair tutorials. So you just decide that your hair would be okay with a satin bonnet* on when you go to bed.

Then you wake up, take your satin bonnet off, and disappointment sinks in. You find that there is no way that you can accomplish second day hair and start frantically looking for bobby pins*.

Here is the thing, you can achieve second day hair, even though you may be among those who just cannot put all of their hair in a pineapple. This is especially for all the curlies, coilies, and kinkies who just want to sleep the night away and not have to worry about sleeping pretty or spending an hour on their hair the next morning.

Knowing how to preserve your hair at night is important for keeping your style intact for the next few days without having to redo the style everyday, hence low manipulation styling.

For starters, the best way to achieve second day hair is to make sure that you start with a solid moisture-based regimen when you go through the process of your wash/style day.

For example, the week you do your deep conditioning* session will help your hair retain the moisture needed. This will ensure that you don’t need to drench your hair with leave-in conditioner* daily, but maybe twice a week depending on your style.

If you set the foundation for styling by doing your wash day and are diligent with your protective measures at night, you will be able to achieve “many days” hair. Try these ways to preserve your curls at night for second day hair:

Wash n go

You don’t necessarily need to wet your hair daily in your morning shower. You can do the Greenhouse Effect by lightly spritzing your hair with water and putting on a plastic cap (or bag) with a satin bonnet* for the night.

This method will keep your hair moisturized with the body heat you produce during the night. In the morning your curls will be moist and you can fluff and go in the morning as your hair dries to show your true curl pattern, just the way you like it.

pin curlsTwist out/Braid out

Sometimes it can be tough when planning for these types of styles, especially when you get the feeling you are going to be let down the next day. So you decide to retwist or rebraid daily to keep your style frizz-free and defined, which does not make this a low manipulation style.

However, it is definitely possible to achieve second day twist out and braid out hair by not retwisting or rebraiding. If you are not able to fully pineapple your hair, try mini pineapples.

The pineapple method is placing your hair in a high, but loose ponytail and leaving your curls out so they won’t be disturbed while sleeping. Try 4 mini pineapples (two on top and two on bottom) by wrapping a scrunchie loosely around your hair (so there are no dents in your style) and place your satin bonnet over your hair.

When you wake up in the morning and remove your satin bonnet and scrunchies, shake your hair out and be amazed that you now have second day hair!

Be sure to use scrunchies (satin would be great) and not ponytail holders or elastic hair ties* for less damage to your hair.

Perm rods*/Flexi rods*

Rod sets are so elegant and make your curls bounce with joy, I mean after all the work and hours it would take to do these styles, the curls better stay for the week!

The best way to maintain your rod set curls at night would be to simply pin curl your style. You would wrap a few curls loosely around two or three fingers to create an oval/circle with your hair. Then take that section off of your fingers and lay it down on your head.

Bobby pin that section flat against your head to create the pin curl. Do this all over your head and place a satin bonnet*/scarf on your head to maintain your curls at night. In the morning, take out your pin curls and fluff for second day hair.

You can also try bantu knots to maintain your curls for the night. This would keep your hair curly for your low manipulation style as well.

Make sure to not stretch the curls too much for less strain on your hair in general. Make sure to do this process loose and gently.

And there you have it! These three styles make it seem impossible to achieve second day hair, but it is very possible. Never believe there is only one way to maintain your style by simply placing a satin bonnet* on your hair.

It can take more preparation depending on your hair and style to achieve second day hair. Always remember to cover your hair with a satin bonnet/scarf or sleep on a satin pillow case to protect your hair at night. And if by chance your curls are completely smooshed for the next day, grab your bobby pins* and create a bomb tuck and roll or a fierce updo.
