3 Suggestions On How To Keep Your Hair Healthy During Lupus Treatment

Alisha beats LupusMany of us know Youtuber “Mo Knows Hair” and we watch her videos religiously. The video featured in this post that she did recently really hit home for me because my best friend was diagnosed with Lupus and I also have family members dealing with the auto immune disease.

Mo did a wash and go for her friend Alisha who was recently diagnosed with stage 4 Lupus using mostly Carols daughter products and explaining why she chose each one at every stage of the wash and go.

If you have lupus then you know all of the health issues that come with it, from weight gain or weight loss from the medication, chemo therapy for some women, headaches, memory loss and other things including hair loss.

One of the things I loved about this video is that Mo came up with a great regimen for her friend centered around preserving as much of her hair as possible.

The thing about this disease is that everything has to be watched from your food intake to how you care for your hair. You want to strengthen the scalp and hair to keep the hair preserved as much as you can as you go through treatment.

Things to consider:

1. Protein and moisture

You need products that will add moisture to the hair, but you also need keratin protein to strengthen and replenish protein lost during Lupus treatment.

In this video Mo recommends using keratin protein every other week and soy protein as an alternate which is a lighter protein that attracts moisture to the hair.

2. Find a low manipulation style

When you are going through treatment you should find a style that keeps your hair un-manipulated so that you can preserve as much hair as you can as it naturally sheds.

I like the fact that Mo does a wash and go because the truth is if you just leave your hair alone while it is styled in that manner it can be even more ‘protective’ than twisting or braiding.

3. Care for your hair once a week

When you are not feeling well it is not easy to stick to a strict regimen of washing once a week, so this is not a golden rule but rather a suggestion.

As you take medication or go through treatment your hair might react in different ways so giving it strength and moisture weekly does help to preserve it as much as you can.

We can appreciate Mo’s message because just having someone to make you feel pretty by getting your hair done while you go through something is enough to lift your spirits when you feel a bit down.
