It is almost big chop day and you are panicking, are you ready for this? Do you have everything? What will you look like? Maybe you should just forget the whole thing and call your stylist for a relaxer.

Wait just one second! Not so fast young lady, you have been back and forth on this and you have finally decided this is what you want so why not just solve the problem. If you need to know what you should have to really prepare for your big chop we can help. Let us help you get there with the top 7 things you need to have before your first big chop.

1. A friend

It might be an emotional day, after all it is like getting a make over. Some of us have a lot riding on the ’emotion’ of finally letting go of the relaxer.

I do not know one woman who did not feel something the day they big chopped and it would be awesome to have a friend there for support or just to share it with.

Now we use the term friend loosely because it could be your cousin, your little girl who you want to teach something to, your mom, your best freind from college or your boo thing. Just have someone there to take selfies with, cry with and smile with.

2. Products

I do not smack a big chopper’s hand when they go shopping for hair product. Girl feel free to go crazy if you have the money. Buying products in the beginning is fun so if you want to explore a little bit of product junkyism in the beginning to find your groove, girl go to Target and bring cash!

Be smart though, you will need a deep conditioner*, a moisturizer, some shampoo and a leave in conditioner*. You will need something with protein in it as well, so cover the basics at least before you get all the fancy stuff with pretty colors and sexy smells.

3. A great pair of scissors

On big chop day you will need a great pair of scissors especially if you are doing the big chop yourself. But even after your big chop you might need to do a bit of cleaning up as your hair grows so you will need a great pair of shears. If you want to know how to pick a good one, click here.

Scissors will be something you will need for your entire natural journey, so make sure you pick one up.

4. A plan

It is less likely that you will have second thoughts on your big chop if you have a plan so buy a couple books read a couple of our blog posts and arm yourself with information on hair care.

When things get a bit overwhelming make it very simple by organizing the information you have according to your own circumstances.

Your big chop regimen that you think you will have might be very different after you cut your hair, so be ready to adjust and adapt to your new look and ways of doing things.

Sadora5. Accessories

Accessories are fun, but they are easier to buy after you do your big chop because then you can get to try them on with your TWA and see what fits you best.

Do not be afraid to think outside of the box with your accessories; cute bows, flowers and earrings all help to complete your look and can be tons of fun.

So too are hats, head bands and scarves. Check your closet for accessories you hardly wear and try them on again. You would be surprised what you discover.

6. Inspiration

The life of a big chopper today is much easier than the life of a big chopper back in 2008. You can get inspired by other big choppers on social media, checking out their style as you find your own.

Inspirational pictures help before you chop, during your chop and they darn sure help after you chop. Hop on Pinterest and see what the other ladies are doing, you will not be disappointed.

7. Confidence

That sounds cheesy and something everyone says but there is a reason everyone says that. When you cut your hair, you have to be ready for what you will see in the mirror. I do not know about you but before I chopped I never ever had short hair, much less a TWA.

How you look is closely tied to your confidence but it doesn’t have to be. As we mature we learn so much about our self that who we are on the inside becomes just as, if not more important than how we look. Making confidence a priority before your big chop can help you to get through it, by allowing you to feel beautiful because of who you are and not what you look like.

Are you about to big chop? How are you preparing for it.?
