4 Nutrient Rich DIY Hair Mask Recipes Designed To Give Your Hair Moisture And Strength

4 Nutrient Rich DIY Hair Mask Recipes

After a winter of long flowing straight hair, flexi rod* sets and bouncy curls, during the summer we want our kinks and curls to have a little freedom. Free from manipulation, free from heat, and free from stress. It is time to pamper those tresses!

We are often amazed at the popularity of hair mask recipes on BHI. Without overthinking things it does tell us a few things about the hair community as a whole; for one, we love creating amazing conditioners and elixirs in the kitchen and secondly we instinctively know that something that we create ourselves from scratch using natural ingredients is the healthiest option for our hair.

You ladies know our mantra around here, we say With Health Comes Length and when I read the hair stories of the various women that contact us, 99% of them say the same thing. I want healthy hair, the length can come later.

We love homemade hair masks because they involve natures best foods. Like our bodies, when we feed our hair with vitamins* directly you give it endurance, life and everything it needs to sustain itself.

You know how great you feel after a day of pampering at the day spa? Thats what these next 5 recipes will do for your hair. Each of them are designed to give you moisture and strength at the same time.

Thank me later (wink), lets begin:

1. Creamy Avocado Hair Mask

1 Ripe Avocado, 1/4 Cup Milk, 1 tablespoon Olive Oil*

Creamy Avocado Hair Mask

For all the recipes you will need a blender*, it is much easier to get all the chunks out of the food that you are using allowing your mix to be pliable. This isnt a requirement but blenders certainly make things much easier. Avocado is the type of fruit that adds moisture and protein to your curls.

It is a superfood filled with great fats that if ever your hair felt even a little dry you can cure it with just one 30 minute session.

Directions

Blend the avocado chunks until you get a nice puree

Add the milk and oil to the mix a little at a time to get that creamy texture

Apply the mixture to your hair, from the roots of your hair to the very ends

Cover your hair with a plastic cap and then use a warm towel to heat things up for about 20-30 minutes. Rinse your hair well with warm water to ensure you get all the avocado out of your hair.

2. Strawberry Vitamin Mask

A handful of strawberries, 1 tablespoon honey*, 1 tbsp coconut oil*

Strawberry Vitamin Hair Mask

This is a vitamin C* mask fit for a goddess, plus strawberries are really great for balancing the pH of your hair and removing excess build up. This mask is really focused on giving you shiny glossy hair naturally.

Now don’t get us wrong, we are not asking you to use the sweetest, most luscious summer strawberries for this hair mask (unless you want to), those should be saved for your tummy. You can actually make use of the last of the mediocre winter strawberries that are not so great to eat on their own but will do the job just fine here.

Directions:

Blend all the ingredients to form a fine puree

Apply the mixture evenly to damp hair

Allow to sit in your hair for 20 minutes then rinse well with warm water

Tip: If you plan to use this recipe and you do not have greasy or oily hair, add a little moisture based conditioner to the mix just to ensure the tart strawberries do not dry your hair out too much. I love Vo5 Strawberries and cream because it smells awesome with fresh strawberries, it’s cheap and somehow it works here!

3. Yogurt And Honey Protein Mask

1/2 cup yogurt, 1 tablespoon honey*, 1 teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar*

Yogurt And Honey Protein Mask

Yogurt is jam packed with antioxidants and protein. Yogurt like avocado moisturizes and strengthens because of the protein content.

Directions

Mix all the ingredients by hand until smooth, apply to your hair like you would a relaxer from root to tip. You can even apply this mask to your scalp for scalp health. Leave the mask on for at least 20 minutes.

To get rid of the smell of the yogurt, use a mild shampoo one that preferable smells like fruit!

4. Nutrient Rich Egg Hair Mask

1 egg, 1 cup of milk, 1/2 lemon, 2 tbsp olive oil*

Nutrient Rich Egg Hair Mask

What’s a mask without a little egg? The eggs strengthen your hair, the milk moisturizes, adds calcium and the lemon and honey* balance your the pH of your hair and add vitamins*. As a matter of fact, let me give you a little detail to work with:

Protein – Nourishes the hair roots, and adds ton of strength

Fatty Acids – Adds shine and gloss

Potassium* – Heals dry, damaged hair

Vitamin A* – Prevents hair breakage.

Vitamin D* – Prevents hair loss

Vitamin B12 – Promotes hair growth.

Calcium – Promotes hair growth and vitamin D* absorption

Directions

Whisk all the ingredients together, this one might be a bit runny so wear a towel. As usual leave it on for at least 20 minutes, steam your hair without a plastic cap or add a cap for more penetration.

For any of these masks if you need to add more of one ingredient go ahead and do just that, the point is you want to adjust measurements depending on what your hair needs, it’s length and thickness.
