How To Maintain A Twist Out Minus The Twisting

Twist OutOnce I discovered twist and braid outs for my natural hair a few years back, I became a twisting fool. Back then I fought my shrinkage tooth and nail but baby I’ve come a long way since then.

I had not yet adjusted to a healthy regimen and experienced trouble with maintaining moisture in my strands. Back then if I allowed my hair to shrink to a TWA, I’d suffer horrible tangles so I opted for twisting daily.

Today, my hair retains moisture very well. I no longer suffer from single strand knots or tangles, even when my hair shrinks. I don’t mind a little shrinkage here and there but want to show my length off at least a couple times a week. Below is my regimen for maintaining stretched hair and cutting down on manipulation of my tresses.

1. Monday: On wash day, twist in small sections, the smaller the twist, the more definition you will achieve and the longer your twists will last.

2. Tuesday: The next day and take twists down. Separate only once or twice. Be sure to use oil or butter during take down. At night, use three ouchless goodie bands* and secure hair in sections. Apply moisturizer since you washed the day before or if needed. You have the option of twisting each section or leaving them in puffs.

3. Wednesday: Remove the goodies bands the next morning. Hair should have adequate of moisture retention and you should have nice little curls & coils. Arrange strands as desired. The following night, perform the same bedtime routine.

4. Thursday: Remove goodie bands*. Hair should have a little stretch and some great definition. Wear a cute fro or frohawk. At night, repeat the same routine or create small mini-puffs all over the head.

5. Friday: Sometimes I wash or simply rinse my hair every 4-5 days, I notice better results with this routine. Sometimes I’ll go a full 7 days, but it depends on how much I’ve exercised, and how much product used on the hair.

So if I decided against washing on Friday, I’d simply refresh my hair by twisting in twists larger than I used during washday. I may add a little bit of moisturizer and styling gel. Have you got any additional tips for avoiding the constant re-twisting cycle?
