We have all contemplated cutting all our hair off at one time or another, and sometimes, we gather up the courage to really plan for it. Whether we cut our hair due to hair damage or from the exhaustion of struggles, none of us are ready for all the moments that come after cutting all our hair off.

Here are 4 things you should expect to feel and do after cutting your hair off:

1. I just made the biggest mistake ever

From personal experience, the first thing you will most likely feel after looking in the mirror is “Oh gosh…I just made the biggest mistake ever.” You might not even want to look in the mirror anymore, but the best way to deal with your crushing defeat is to not give up on your new look.

The moment you walk out of the restroom, you might not ever come to terms with your new haircut. We suggest you keep looking at yourself in the mirror and checking yourself out regardless of what you are thinking. You will probably see that the cut is just right for you, and you can rock it!

Be ready to feel a crushing pain inside your chest, even if you were ready for your haircut, It is hard to see all your hair and hard work fall onto the floor. But just think of your new style as a whole new beginning, your hair will grow back and be better than ever.

2. Time to match your hair cut with your style

A bald or nearly bald haircut is a symbol. A fierce symbol. To compensate for the hair you used to style every morning, change your look a bit and feel more fly than ever. Bigger earrings and brighter eye shadow colors can really change the game.

Try wearing snazzier shoes, or get your nails done. You will really start to see a new look pull together, one you can pull off without a doubt!

Buy a few new tops that you’ve been dying to try, but might not have had the confidence or fierce new look. But most of all, realize that this is an entire change in your look, and it will take some getting used to.

You can still rock your same apparel and be cuter than ever, but everything might feel a little different, and that is alright. Your change in look is still just you, just a fiercer, edgier you!

You might think now that you have this new haircut, especially if you went bald that you have to change your regimen to compensate, but that is completely untrue. There might be slight changes in your regimen which might have more to do with technique rather than a product overhaul.

Having a freshly shaven scalp, your head might be a little sensitive to product. In that case, a gentle shampoo or conditioner might be needed.

With washing, because you have a lot less hair, you will have a lot less dirt and grime build up to clean out. Washing can be cut down but never completely stopped.

Shampooing will be a lot less frequent, and you may not have to use a ton of conditioner to get the moisture you need. This does not mean you should not deep condition every now and again, try to keep your deep condition regimen in tact as your hair grows.

As for all your oils* and leave-in, if you have a completely shaven head, you can bring your light oils* into rotation because creamy leave-ins and thick hair moisturizers will make your head look greasy, and will suffocate your scalp.

That doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy any additional oils just use of the little olive* or coconut oil* you already have in your stash.

4. You might expect your texture to change

The truth is, it might look different as it grows. As most of us know, our hair grows very fast after a haircut, especially if the cut was a close shave or very short.

Personally every time that I have cut my hair (Usually in a Lupita Nyong’o style), my hair texture has changed. Be prepared to see a little change in the way your hair feels once it is growing back.

It might feel a lot more healthy, so it might be more full or your curls more defined. It might feel curlier or straighter, but it won’t be anything anyone else notices, just you.

These changes in hair texture are normal, so do not freak out. Your hair is still your hair, which means the same products are still going to work and work well.

Haircuts are scary but totally electrifying, the cool thing is you can enjoy it for a minute and then you have the choice to grow it all back.
