10 Things We Would Add To A #Growingupwithblackhair Hashtag
Black Twitter went crazy this week with the trending hashtag, #growingupblack. Topics ranged from those dreaded whoopings, to the omnipotent Robitussin, to watchful mothers. I decided to join in on the fun and put together a list based on what it was like growing up with Black hair:
1. Before holidays and big events, you had to “hold your ear” so that you didn’t get burned by one of these
2. Once you were old enough to do your own hair, you used tons of jam to lay down your “baby hair”
3. These were the holy grail:
4. Your mom used curling irons* as flat irons*
5. You had these in your closet and had no idea what they were for…
6. When your mother finished your hair, you’d look like this because you’re “tender-headed”
7. Everyone in middle school claimed that they used to have long hair
8. Wearing bo-bos (baubles) and “doo-doo braids” until puberty
9. That time you wore a Frohawk and thought you were extra cool
10. You hoped that these wouldn’t burn your ears while you were under the dryer
