4 Invaluable Tips To Remember When Caring For Your Weave This Summer

Summer Weave Tips1

Can someone pass me an ice-cold lemonade and a mobile air conditioning unit? I’m burning up and that is no joke. It has been extremely hot this Summer and the humidity is literally unbearable. What’s worse is that you still want to look cute despite the humidity, but your weave has other plans.

Weaves* are HOT in the Summertime, sure they are sexy, but they can feel like you are wearing a beanie hat in 100 degree weather especially if you have in a full sew-in.

The hotter and more humid it is, the more sweaty, itchy, smelly, and tangled your scalp and weave* can feel, act, and look. Of course, you want to be FLAWLESS and FLY during the summer. So it makes sense to opt for a weave as an easy protective style for a few weeks however weave hair can also be harder to maintain during the summer.

With that said where there is a will there is a way and we have a few tips you can try to keep that hair  looking flawless while maintaining a healthy scalp:

Frequently clean your scalp and weave

You will definitely have to take special and sensitive care of your hair underneath the weave by cleansing often and moisturizing when needed.

Use a sulfate-free shampoo to cleanse your hair underneath and your weave to alleviate the product buildup from your scalp and your weave.

Take note that you may need to cleanse your scalp and weave more often than you would other seasons because of the change in weather, increased sweat, and chlorine/salt water from swimming pools and beaches. To prevent heavy sweat and dirt build-up, it’s very important to do so frequently during the Summer.

Purchase quality hair

When considering a sew-in weave* for a long-term style, the quality of the hair should reflect how long you are planning to keep the style. The summertime is especially important when choosing what kind of weave would be best for you.

Curly, coily, and kinky weaves* tend to be the most popular choices for the summer.

Straight and wavy hair tend to get more oily and greasy quicker than curly, coily, and kinky* hair.

You would spend most of your time manipulating your straight and wavy hair by combing, flat ironing, and making sure not one strand is out of place. With curly, coily, and kinky* hair you can just enjoy the summer sun, allow the hair to go wherever it pleases, and put a satin bonnet* on at night.

Weave hairChoose the cut and style

Once you determine what kind of weave you will want for the summer, the cut and style are very important for the duration of your weave. Do you want some leave-out or a full sewin?

Do you want long or short hair? Would you rather have hair to do multiple styles or a set style? Make sure you answers a few questions about what you are looking for in your style before you get it installed.

Note that the longer the hair, the more you will need to deal with the style. This is the summer! Opt for a bob or short curls rather than your regular 18 inch weave that will still to the beach chair and your body.

Keep your style as light and wispy as you can make it. The last thing you want to do is to be cooped up in your hotel room because you have to maintain your weave.

Shorten the duration of your install

You may see many women say that they tend to keep their weaves* in from 8 to 12 weeks, which may work if it wasn’t so hot and humid.

As I have said before, you tend to sweat more in the Summer than other months. No long-term style can last forever, so try not to keep your sew-in longer than you usually would in the fall or winter months.

You may have cared for your hair underneath and your weave as often as you could do so, but you will want to give your own hair a full cleanse more often in the hotter months than you would in the colder months.

Try other weave styles

This has nothing to do with caring for your weave but if you decide that the high maintenance is not for you, you do have other options.

Box braids, twists, corn row styles are all super cute and very versatile options for the Summer. You still have to maintain a clean scalp but at least your are able to get to your scalp if you need to.

These styles aren’t as ‘hot’ as a full sew in and you have the same styling versatility as you would loose hair. In addition to twist and braid extensions*, clip ins* for temporary styles are also a great option for those of you who just need a quick change up for a night on the town.

This way you can still keep your natural hair healthy but change your style at the drop of a dime! Comment below and let us know how you have been wearing your hair this Summer.
