How To Dye A Synthetic Wig! (Method For Lace Fronts)

I'm back finally with a new video! This is one I've had in the works for a while but recent holidays and sickness have got in the way! Though many have said it can't be done, colouring synthetic hair is indeed possible with products like ink and fabric dye. There's plenty of tutorials out there of people dipping their wigs in fabric dye, but I wanted to come up with a method for dying my lace front wigs without staining the lace!

In this video we're using the Rit DyeMore liquid dye for synthetics. I used pink and purple but you should experiment with your own colours, as long as you're starting off with very light hair!

Pros:

- Colour is permanent and you can wash and steam it and restyle it

- Dye is cheap and accessible, so is a platinum blonde wig!

- Exact control over the outcome

Cons:

- Can stain your clothes, carpet, and towels if you're not careful

- Fairly limited to pastel shades only

- Can't dye all the way to the root

For some ambitions, you might just be better off purchasing an already coloured synthetic wig, or custom colouring human hair, but this project is a really cheap alternative! Hope you guys enjoyed!

If you're interested, here's a tutorial I did on how to sew in tracks to add more colour to a wig! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxihWA...

Hey guys, it's kind welcome back to my channel. I feel like at this point I might as well just make my standard channel introduction an apology message for being away for so long. I recently just got back from a holiday that I took in England. My very first time even on the European continent, people were lovely. I had a fabulous time, I'm actually gon na be going back in a couple of weeks. I'Ve just really fallen in love with England, let's put it at that, but then, upon coming home to Canada, I came down with a terrible cold and I had so much for it to catch up on, but now I'm back to cross-dressing, I'm really stoked about today's Video because I've been wanting to do this type of video for so long as you can tell from the title. This is all about dyeing synthetic hair. I'Ve dyed human hair on my channel before just using the conventional methods of using hair dye, but of course synthetic hair is plastic and we have to be a little bit. Creative I've heard of people dying, they're synthetic wigs with markers or ink. I'Ve heard that those things will like come off in the wash and like potentially stay in clothes, so I don't really want to go down that path. I think that the best way to go about this is to use fabric dye, because that's the closest to what wigs are made of is synthetic fabric. Now I've tried this before on another lace, front, wig and sort of failed miserably. This is another wig that started off as platinum blonde and I just dip the whole thing in some fabric dye just by following the instructions on the bottle. But the problem was that it dyed the lace, like so intensely that it's hard even really to wear and try to salvage, because you just see that dark purple lace. So the method that I've tried out in this video was, I only sort of dyed it in streaks and dyed very close to the base. So, instead of dipping the entire thing in a pot of dye, I just dyed it little by little by putting the dye in a little cup. So I can really control where it would touch. Another thing that I wanted to try was using fabric spray paint because they have that out there and Michael's that I sort of figured that if I was just trying to spray little strands of hair, it would be a little bit too messy and get all over. My room, I mean for essence that I carry how to make some sacrifices and really experiment with things, because there aren't products out there that are made for this particular project, whereas with human hair, there are so many advanced innovations and products and technology that there's kind Of something for everything for synthetic hair, we have to make some sacrifices like, for instance, you have to start with a very light hair. You can't go out dyeing a synthetic wig, that's black or some other darker color, there's no way to bleach it any lighter and the digest won't stick with all the way companies that are out there. Now, there's really someone selling any kind of color that you can think of, but if there's a very particular color combination that you want that you can't really find anywhere. Maybe this is a method that you can try out to approach it. This method will result in you getting a very pastel look to the hair and you'll understand. Why, once you see the method, there's lots of different ways, you can get the look of streaks in your hair. You can sew tracks in your hair and I've done videos about that. You can even use makeup in theory, but this method you can actually wash it out and steam it and style it without it washing out because it is permanent. This is how my wig turned out. I really love it, there's streaks of pink and purple and blonde all throughout it I'll put down in the description all the products that I use all the details and any other comments that I can't really think about right now. But let's just jump into the tutorial. Alright, so I've got our wig right here. It is a blonde synthetic wig and blood is the key term. You really want the hair to be as light as possible as close as possible to white, so that the color, whatever color you choose, really takes to the hair and looks true to what's in the box. So I've got two colors right here that I'm gon na play with a pink and a purple, and these are from rich. They are the liquid fabric. Dyes RIT makes different formulas a fabric dye. Some of them are not really recommended for synthetic fibers like polyester acrylic acetate, I'm just reading off this label this something like this is more meant for. Like cotton, you want to look for the dye that on the label says it's good for synthetic material like this one says it's meant for polyester, nylon and acrylic, because of course a synthetic wig is made totally out of plastic. So, as I've shown you earlier, I've experimented around, I tried dyeing synthetic wigs before and it's just been a disaster when it came to the lace, because I couldn't find any way to not color the lace. So I think what I'm gon na do here is, instead of dyeing the entire wig and dying the roots up to the lace, I'm just gon na dye little streaks and highlights and not go as close to the root. In fact, I think what I'm gon na do is I'm going to take the end of a call and actually section off a bit of a front hair. So the front hairline will be totally blonde and I'll just add the streaks to the back and then now when it comes to adding the streets of color to the hair, I'm just gon na start from the back. I'Ve got here a kettle of some boiling hot water and a little disposable plastic Tim Hortons coffee cup. So I'm gon na fill this mmm about halfway the way to activate the dyes to mix it with boiling hot water. So, let's start off, maybe with the purple. I'M really just gon na eyeball. It maybe I'll use a couple capsules, it's probably better to start off with less and then just keep adding more okay. You know what I'm also gon na lay down this towel right, underneath, where I'm working, so anything can spill on. That so, I think I'm gon na die this entire back section, hmm yeah. Let'S do that, and so I'm just gon na take my cup and I'm just gon na completely dip this in I'm gon na get as close as I can to the root. So the bottle says to keep the fabric in the solution for 30 minutes. My goodness, I'm not doing that. As you can see it took to the color almost instantly. I should have thought this through a little bit better. I'M gon na take just this little paper. Towel and take out all of the dripping dye - oh my god. Okay, I think I'm just gon na accept that this towel is just gon na go to so I am just gon na dry. The excess off you're meant to wash it out with cold water afterwards and of course, I'm gon na do that in the end. But I am just kind of patting this dry so that it doesn't spill everywhere and make a huge mess. But as you can see, this is how that back, hair is looking just instantly, so I'm taking down some more hair and I'm gon na die a little bit more purple. You know what let's actually play with this pink, so I'll do the pink next, since I've got a second cup right here. So same thing, I'm gon na fill it up about half way with water. Do a couple capsules of pink the first shake it okay! So now I'm gon na pull out some streaks and dyed in pink and I'm gon na kind of weave my brush in and out like that. Oh my god, let me put on some gloves. Oh my god, my channel is so bootleg on there. Why? You guys watch me, as I was saying: I'm gon na pull some strands out to dye pink again, just starting from me and I'm gon na dip it in, and you can see that pink right there. It looks really dark, but, as you'll see later on, when you wash it out, it's not gon na, be this dark. I'M actually gon na go to a more pastel shade and getting as close to the root as I can. But of course, since the water is in a cup, I can't exactly touch the root, so let's hold it in there for like five more seconds and then, let's take it down to reveal this beautiful, dark, pink, I'm gon na let the excess water drip into the Cup, so it really minimizes the mass and then let's stop it dry with the towel yay. So there's our pink strands: let's do some more over here kind of have to slowly push it in it's not the easiest thing and then once I get to the top, or at least this is how high the hair is gon na go, I'm gon na stir It around to make sure all of that hair is being touched by the dye, like so I'll hold it there for about 10 seconds and then taking the hair out all right. I changed my sweater because I was too afraid of ruining about another one. I'M just gon na keep going up, so let's do pink now up here - oh my god, okay, so I think I'm finally done dyeing this hair. I'M really excited to see how this is all gon na turn out. So I'm gon na take this down and take out my pins and I'm gon na wash this in cold water two thousand years later. Okay, so the wig has dried overnight. Now so here's how she's looking it came out gorgeous in my mind, I kind of envisioned for things to have more of the look of like streaks and highlights. But, as you can see, it's almost all like just blending together into one little bubble, gum color. You can sort of see where I was going with it here with the pink streaks really inspecting it. I can tell there are places where the color took a lot better than other places like you'll. See here is where the pink looks very strong, and here the pink looks a lot more faded, and I can remember that the reason why is because, when the pink worked really well was when I had poured a new batch of hot water. So if you are working with boiling boiling water, the color is gon na take a lot more effectively than when you've let the water sit for a little bit. So if you want the color to take really effectively and be as close as possible to the color in the bottle, I would switch up the water and pour some new boiling water and mix it again, like almost every few strands, so that it's really really hot. To the touch anyway, I'm not complaining because I think it still looks gorgeous and it didn't touch any of the lace which I'm very pleased by so I'm gon na stop this hair. Now I want to give her some nice sexy, curls and waves, so I am just gon na set her with these wire mesh rollers that are an inch and 1/8 in diameter. You guys have seen this process many many times, so I'm just gon na skip forward through this. Can I just say I am so annoyed at these forever21 nails that I've tried out. I find you've recommended these to me. Did I find the wrong one? They look like this. These are the shittiest piece of that I have ever tried in my life. I met as well just use them as post-it notes, because that's how much taking power they have like they're, not even that cute like art, isn't the appeal of these to be able to put this on without having to use nail glue. But that's what I'm doing anyway, like gods day out anyway, I just get more saucy. When I have long nails you guys this is how the hair ended up looking. This was a super fun project. I hope you guys get the chance to try this out on your own, speaking of which here are some lovely people. Who'Ve, been tagging me on instagram and looks of mine that they've recreated tutorials that they've tried out makeup, looks that they've even drawn and made artwork of thanks so much for the time. Please keep them coming and let me know what else you guys want to see me do on my channel. I love to read your requests. I might not always do them. I might upload very sporadically and disappear randomly for long periods of time, but I might just come through thanks so much for watching guys. I hope you enjoyed this video. Let me know your thoughts down in the comments, but until I see you guys next time, I hope you're all doing well. Bye,

Robertshaw: You can put Vaseline or any other kind of patrolmen jelly on the lace then dip it into the dye since it is oil based it won’t allow any dye absorb into the lace. I love how the wig turned out and hope you have a lovely day

Steven Mclellan: Love how this turned out. I will deffinetly be trying this, expecially now that i know it works, on a dark rooted platinum wig so that it wouldnt need to go near the root/lace. Thank you soo much

Bradley Dennis: So excited to see you back!

Cucumamacacapipi: This is interesting, I've watched three videos just now and each used a different method. 1 used an unknown product, and brushed it on. 2 used acrylic ink and alcohol mixed, and sprayed it on, then used sharpie to color the root.

Benjamin Fairchild: I think using a product like scotch guard or a similar waterproofing/stain blocker on your lace would make it possible to dip dye a synthetic wig. Although I really love the rooted look with pastels!

E Allen: Yas!!!!! This was so good. I want to buy a wig and try this out now, but I have no need for a wig. Lol. Much love from Houston

Stephanie Kemp: Thanks so much vid helped me dye some of my synthetic wigs

Flowers Roses: The wig came out absolutely beautiful and gorgeous! Honey you are slaying! Thank you for your review.

Kate Taggart: I love the colours and I know lace fronts are expensive however I love the colour of the dip dyed purple wig. Is gorgeous! You have inspired me to go for the synthetic dyes for my wigs. Thank you so much for this tutorial. Much love from a fellow Canuck.

Ro Rober.: Thanks for being so thorough

Olivia Peters: Omg fell head over heels on you’re first video and was highly addicted ever since and I’m binging on you’re videos !!! Xoxo you are amazing thank you for the tips babe

Charlotte Matlock: Can we talk about your jacket?! I actually adore it!!!

JadeLeaf1980: I was wondering, Kyne...do you stone any of the fancy garments you wear? Did you stone that jacket? The one thing I don’t think I’ve seen you do is a stoning tutorial (I did search but didn’t find it if there is one) and as someone learning to stone myself, it’d be interesting to see your tips, etc, on placement, best glues (what’s durable in the wash), how to get the glue on the fabric, how to get just enough on without flooding the stones once placed, tools you can use for placing stones etc (a bit of blutack on the end of a Bobby pin is my cheap version of a crystal katana). Just a thought. ❤️ Oh also, if you love England, you’d love Scotland even more

SBB: Do a bodysuit with shoulder pads tutorial please ❤️❤️

Lucas Wilson: Can I suggest that instead of horizontal sections you do long vertical sections on a wig. It will give you a much, chunkier highlight like ribbons of color.

sen sational: you look so beautiful in this i’m a happy happy in love new subscriber thank you for this video!!

Emma Nordh: Then there's me... sprays on the wig and prays to heaven and beyond that it'll work.

alox venz: i love him omg his drag queen transition

Gab Delapaz: Can you do a tutorial on Manila's hair in All Stars 4 Episode 2? Btw, really am a fan of your vids ❤️

Model C: Put Vaseline on the lace to prevent being colored. Washes very well with shampoo hope this helps

Sally Len: I'm making a Rengoku wig (not for cosplay) It's gonna be kinda long and i'm gonna cut it into a shag/wolf cut because Rengoku has layers. But my only problem was, was that i had a white synthetic lace front lol Now that i know what to do i'm pumped

Wontonita: 6:54 tell me why I thought that brush was a knife lmao! I was like okay, you do you! Lol. I feel dumb, obviously it wouldn't be a knife

Catherine Fisher: Love this & love the jacket!!! Did you make that, too?

Alan Bywater: Okay but we need a tutorial for that jacket!

Brigi Bowes: I found this pretty lace front wig, and its grey (I bought it because I love -blackpink-Rose's hair color in the 'how you like that' music video her hair color is like a grey with a little bit of like a greyish blue tone to it) And I bought hair dye the same color as her hair and I want to create a wig that looks exactly like her hair color frome the 'how you like that' music video :)) This was one of the videos I stummbled upon and it helps~ Thank you!

Suspiria Weird: Hey darling! I was curious about doing something like this but adding black lowlights through my pumpkin spice color wig. Do you think that is possible without making a HUGE mess of things?

Lizzy C: Could you put something on the lace like vaseline to help protect it?

Cherokee W.: Rit has a color stay bottle that works really well. I've dyed a wig once with Rit but it was their all purpose dye an we got some good shades out of them. Idk what type of Ritdye you are useing but it doesn't look like the all purpose kind....unless i missed you saying what kind it was at the beginning XD. But in think they look nice an next time buy the color stay....or no color fade bottle. So helpful :3

Caleb Macion: Thank god!!! My lace is stained but I have this video to help me out next time!!!!

Madam Vonkook: There is something called Jacquard Dye which is very vibrant and intended for dying synthetic fibers/textiles it seems expensive a little goes a long way it is highly pigmented but a small amount of the powder will make enough dye for a wig! here is a link to an affordable set of dye each jar is more than enough for a synthetic wig https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jacquard-Dye-Na-Flow-10-Color-Set/231904728376?hash=item35fe995538:g:SRQAAOSwZ8ZXBR5f

Alexi Pembrooke: This is STUNNING. Like, sure you can get a wig in any color these days, but this is so unique and customizable. I want to do this for some big beetle juice hair in shades of green

earth angel rachel: Have you thought about using a spray bottle especially closer to the roots? I found that worked.

Kiki Krazier: Can you do a tutorial on how to put baby hairs on a lace front?

Isaias Balderas: HEY KYNE! Love this look! Love pink on u

Get Wiggy: Love that jacket! I want it!

Taylor Schroeder: Me: Sees Kyne uploaded ANY video Me: OMG WELCOME BACKKKKK

jason Shores: You could've used the spray. You just need a nozzle extender like on WD40 it gives you a more precise spray and if you use foils it would work easily!!!! I hopeyou see this and try!!!

Lisa Lightning: Great video. But I’m wondering, doesn’t the boiling hot water take all the curl out of the synthetic hair? Which would mean any synthetic hair wig would turn out straight, but then you could re-curl I guess? Has anyone tried the alcohol ink method?

Reece Green: Finally someone has done it

So Stasiaa: LOVE LOVE LOVE This!!!!

Oshyn Rodriguez: Your absolutely gorgeousss ❤️

a a: miss thing got that bangers and mash giggetry CONFIRMED

Daniel Jackson: onlinekyne - in other videos for dying wigs, to prevent dying the lace, they either sprayed it with hair spray or covered it with vasaline… and I think one even used Conditioner to coat the lace.

David Flores: Hopefully you upload more often cutie.

Behind The Posh: slayed period!

Leslee: How do you do 3-5 time ombre dye if you don’t mind me asking?

Colby Aubert: I love your videos I went to go look at wigs using your code but it says expired sadly

1980valentine: If you add conditioner you will get a better consistency you can apply with a tint brush put a shower cap or wrap in film then use hairdryer to add the heat to make the colour stick better x

Trinity Uriah: Please come to Birmingham ❤

Onandra Williams: Use Got to be freeze spray on your lace first on the inside and out. Let it dry then you can dip the wig, it’ll keep the lace from dying. Same with water color dying with human hair. Hope this helps

Jynxxxycat: I'll bet that you could use a tie dye method, to get more of a holographic effect!

Jimmy Cardashian: okuuuuuuur lady marmalade!maybe a blond wig with dark root wil be a better material?just assuming❤️

Minx: ur skin is looking great lately <3

Theeric.1: To not color the lace, cover the lace with Vaseline, and it will keep the lace clean when you wash it out

Jenny O: This is very helpful. Thank you.

Sarah McFarland: Where did you get that stunning jacket?!

Queen:X-Tina: I don’t know if you know but they do sell plastic caps that are specially made for highlighting hair . You just put the cap then you use a hook to take out the hair you want to highlight. It would be a lot easier

Elixxirr Official: Werk! Hopefully i can meet you in person soon!

Barbara Dányi: There are some bleaching methods for this out there. (At least I would try Hperoxide, or even baking soda for getting that tint out from the lace. IF nothing else works I would use citric acid diluted maybe.

Doki Doki Cosplay: The hotter the water and the longer you leave the hair in the cup (even seconds longer) the more intense the color will be :)

Chocolate Chicca: Canadian love . Fantastic job luv!

Ashley Buttafuoco: Correct me if I’m wrong but can’t you apply petroleum jelly to the lace to protect it while dying it all at once?

Jamie D. Bauchery: Might do some hot pink tips on a new blonde wig I go!

Queen Cheeks: I Heard Got To Be Freeze Spray Is Good Too . Spray It On Before You Dip Dye Your Hair & Your Lace Won’t Get Stained

Meg Kemp: turned out cute!!! inspired me
