Hey guys today, I'm gon na show you how I styled my Rico wig. First, I start with a cheap, yellow, heat-resistant cosplay wig that I found on eBay. It was only like 10 dollars, and I know it's not an up two yet, but I will show you how I fixed that in the video first I start by spraying it with water to make it a little damp. So I can go over it with a hair straightener on low heat dampening the hair really helps protect the fibers from burning up. I just spray it with the water brush the water through the hair, and I lightly go over it with my strainer here I section the hair to the side, where I want the bangs and to make the part - and I just clip it all out of my Way so I can work on the ponytail after the banks are separated. I take the loose hair in the back and start cutting off chunks of it at the base as close to the tracks, as I can, as you cut off the hair, keep the sections straight and together and lay them neatly beside you on a table. So they don't get tangled up. You want to keep these pieces of loose hair together and nice and straight because we will be using them later to glue them back on to make the ponytail. I leave some of the hair attached at the top back middle of the wig, so I can use it as a base for the ponytail. I also don't cut off the hair in the lower back of the wig, because that will be used to make her little pigtails, so I just braid it and keep it out of my way. So I can move on to making the ponytail. I take some of the loose hairs that weren't clipped out of the way for the bangs and hot glue them to the wig, for the ponytail make sure before you use glue that your wig is stretched as much as possible and pin to your wig head. So when you glue the hair down, it's not too tight on your head. You also don't have to worry about making these hairs. Look super smooth or perfect, because you're just gluing them back and holding them down before I finished the ponytail, I'm going to part the bangs and prepare them for gluing on more hair. This week, originally doesn't have a pair at all, since it's just a really cheap wig from eBay, so to create the part. I separate the hair, where I want the part to be, and I apply a little bit of hot glue to hold it in place. Then I take some sections of the loose hair and cut a flat edge and then apply hot glue to the end of it and begin gluing it to the wig. I apply it to where the bangs end and the ponytail begins. I take little sections of loose hair. I cut off the edge of them so they're straight and flat, and then I apply some hot glue to them and press them onto the wig. As you can see, this makes a very smooth, very clean up to ponytail. Look without having to spend tons of money on a premade, ponytail wig, I think the best part about it - is that since the glue dries a little stiffer, the wig also holds its shape better you after I have all the loose hair that I need for the Ponytail glued to the wig. I then begin to glue each strand down, so the hairs thoroughly cover the base and don't move around [ Applause ] after I finished gluing down the entire ponytail. I moved back onto the bangs. I do the same thing and take a loose strand of hair and cut a flat edge at the end of it and then apply hot glue to it, so it can stick to the wig and I continue this process just like I did with the ponytail. This way you have a fixed, very defined part that looks great with any leftover loose hair. I cut small pieces of it and glue it to the ponytail to give it that spiky poofy look riku's hair has you. I also take some pieces of hair that are already attached to the wig and put some hot glue at the base of them to hold them up and spread them out. Just keep messing with the hair until you're happy with the shape and size of the ponytail. Then I take my scissors and trim upward to add more shape and layers to it. [ Applause ]. Once I'm happy with the shape of the ponytail, I take out the braids, so I can color the hair. I start with a warm brown cheap, acrylic craft paint from Walmart that I got for only $ 1 and brush it directly to the hair. I mainly apply it directly to the base or at the roots and work it throughout the rest of the hair. I take a water spray bottle to dampen the hair and thin out the paint, so it's easier to brush and work the color into the hair. Since the wig is synthetic, I'm not actually dyeing the hair, I'm just coating it with paint the only thing it might do. If you apply a lot of, it is make the hair feel slightly chalky or less shiny, but it won't rub off on your hands when it's dry and I personally prefer the less shiny, wigs over super shiny wigs, because it looks so much more realistic and makes It look so much better to me personally. It really makes it cheap synthetic wig from eBay. Look like it could be real hair. I have been doing this for over 10 years and no, I don't think it's that hard to do. It may take some time to get used to so I recommend using some loose hair or an old wig. You don't need to test out this method, a lot of people who haven't tried it or have tried it and failed. At first say it doesn't work or like to criticize my method, because it's not what they're used to people doing, but I am living proof that it does in fact work because I do this for almost every single one of my wigs and I'm very happy with How my wigs look due to this process, I really encourage everyone to try new things outside of their comfort zone or outside of what other people teach them. That are the only correct or proper way to do things, because then you get to explore new ways to do things and it might work out way better for you than something someone else has recommended. You don't always have to have the fanciest tools or a bunch of expensive products, or do something that's incredibly hard to learn to have really good results. It'S really amazing what you can do when you just let your creativity take charge and try new things and explore different options, and if it works, it's not wrong. [ Applause ]. I actually started doing this when I was a kid, because I wanted my Barbie dolls to go to the hair salon and get their hair done, and the only thing that was available to me was paintbrushes and cheap craft paint. So I made it work. In fact, it works so good that I continued to this day to use the method that I taught myself as a child. As you can see, there are so many different tones in the wig and it looks more like animated textured hair than just a cheap wig, which is perfect for Final Fantasy characters. I also take a smaller brush with some darker paint, colors and brush it into the roots. Once it's dry, I put it on my head, so I can properly style it around my face. I start by separating the hair in the middle bottom of the back and braiding the pigtails and they brush out the ponytail and take some craft glue and dip my fingers in it. Then what it was some water. So it's easier to work with and I begin spiking the tips of my hair. This also helps hold the hair up and in place. Then I take the bangs and trim them a bit to make them just right, and then I take more glue and put some water on it and then apply it to my bangs to hold them in place. So they don't move around and they also spike the ends of them a bit. I mainly just focus on getting the shape right and making sure they frame my face correctly. I also use some glue for the pigtail braids, so no loose hair stick out. I love using glue for wigs instead of styling gels because it holds its shape, so good. I'Ve had this week for years now, since I've made it and the Styles not got messed up throughout all the traveling and ponds I've gone to, it still holds its shape. Then I just added two little strips of poster board to the bangs as fake hair clips and painted them green and blue. I also added little orange and yellow feathers to the ends of my pigtails. I really hope this helped. You learn some things about styling up to wigs or coloring cheap synthetic hair. I have a makeup tutorial and full costume tutorial for this look on my channel feel free to check those out. I will add all the links in the description. Thank you so much for watching guys, bye,

Alyson Tabbitha: NOTE: Hey guys! :) In this video I mention how I've been doing it for years! So I may make it look easy, cause it now, is very easy for me! That doesn't mean you will get it perfect your first try, (though I have seen that happen!!). So make sure you do some test samples or try it on a wig you would be OK with possibly messing up! I get really nasty, misguided criticism for my methods. Because I use cheaper unconventional techniques & affordable materials that have proven to work really well for me! So when elitist who think there is only a few "correct" ways to do things, or ppl mad they spend more time and money doing things people can get similar results doing much cheaper/differently, or they have try and failed at, I get blamed & lashed out at for it. I just want to remind people the reason I make these tutorials is because people endlessly ask me HOW >I< MAKE >MY< COSTUMES. So I show people how I make MY costumes. I do not insists my methods or the things I do are the best or only way to do things! In fact I always encourage people to try DIFFERENT things, & find a way that works BEST for THEM. It's really sad that people always ask me to share my secrets for how I make my costumes. So I share all my secrets. Then get criticized because it's not what they wanted/expected. People ignorantly think I have a team of people, & tons of money to spend for making costumes. & I'm really sorry if this isn't what they want to hear, but no. I don't. Just like most people who cosplay as a hobby, I have a tight budget, & work on things myself. I am an adult with bills to pay & mouths to feed & take care of. So I did have to work hard & develop skills within my means. & no I don't have to "do better" or do things the way more professional cosplayers do it, cause that doesn't work for me. I'm just an average cosplayer, doing what I do, in a way I enjoy most. I love mess. lol EVERYONE LEARNS & CREATES IN DIFFERENT WAYS! THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO LEARN OR CREATE! FIND A WAY THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU & RUN WITH IT!

Silvia Blanco López: I really love that your methods are mostly unconventional, because you teach others that cosplay isn't about doing things perfectly with a precise method, there's variety to get to the same goal. When I finish watching your videos, I always feel encouraged to think outside the box to achieve my cosplay goals with what I have in hand and my economy, that's why I admire you so much I hope you keep the good work

Ultra Violet1197: Me in the beginning: Wtf are you doing Alyson Me at the end: you're a wig god

Dannie: I was in full panic when you started hacking off wefts and then it all started coming together and I must say that I love how brave and sure you are of your abilities. Keep being you and doing what works.

Gothic Hinata: Average cosplayer: stubbing, sewing wefts, making hairparts themselves,... Alyson: "hold my drink" I really love the result of all of your work! You're such an inspiring person. Everytime I watch one of your videos I instantly want to work on my own costumes

stahp pls: How does your face just TRANSFORM. Like some people who are good with reshaping and contouring don't transform that well in different angles. Admit it, you're a Skrull aren't you

Chloé Radice: "If it's stupid but it works than it's not stupid" a famous quote in the engineering field that fits well with what you said ;)

milesboop: Alyson really be out here makin professional cosplay looks with cheap ebay wigs and glue, we stan

CharlieMemorial: I love these videos because when you see the finish product first you just think, oh she just parted it, put it in a ponytail and then braided two pieces. Then you watch it and realize so much more goes into making some frankly impossible hairstyles. And you always have the best tips and tricks

Kyle Vanderwolf: Honestly that acrylic method works really great for even more expensive wigs that are synthetic. Just added some root definition to one of my long wigs and it looks sooooooo much better.

Jade Coady: Honestly thank you for posting this. I was having such a hard time trying to find good tutorials for wigs. Everyone of them seemed super complicated and had these fancy products. Your tutorial is very straight forward and these are products I can actually afford. Definitely going to do this for styling a complex wig that I'll be wearing for a convention. (going to first try it out on a different wig of course). THANK YOU SO MUCH! ♥️

Emo Emi: I absolutely love your different methods for cosplay! They're always cheap and easy to follow, and I really appreciate that since I'm just beginning. I loved this video, and I admire how much you have contributed to the community!

Michelle M.: I was OBSESSED with FFX when I was in high school, and I loved Rikku's hair so much. I actually ended up cutting my hair myself so it would look like Rikku's, including not cutting the under part of my hair so my braids would be longer. ❤

Zak: I love this method! How do you like to transport your wigs to conventions that you've styled with glue? Any tips for transporting heavily styled wigs via airplane?

Piccadally: I love how your wigs look completely crazy in the beginning and then look so beautiful and perfect in the end. Also this video made me remember how beautiful and amazing the FF X-2 OST is.

Pusheen Mew: Oh my gosh this is the BEST method of creating ponytails so far i've seen Alyson, i'm eternally grateful for your methods QAQ

cereyza: I'm so happy that there are talented creators in the world like you KEEPING the FFX/X-2 lecacy alive and thriving

Confuzed Graphite: This method for creating a part on a partless wig is going to be so helpful when I do my Birds of Prey Harley Quinn wig!!

Delaney Little: I've watched this twice and seen your ponytail wigs irl and I still swear this is WITCHCRAFT!

Eboshi's_right_arm: You make this look so easy lol I'd end up with my hands covered in glue and hair

Baby H: possibly the smartest most creative person on the planet im surprised u haven’t done any work for movies n stuff

Sunny Burrito: Even though I don't cosplay myself I love cosplay and the community and you are one of my favorites along with Yaya and Jessica, but to me you set yourself apart when it comes to make up and wig styling you become the character, it's impressive, I love your work, much love Alyson and keep the incredible work, also I'd love to see you cosplay Aqua and Kairi from the Kingdom Hearts franchise and definitively Claire Redfield from Resident Evil, it would be amazing.

forever cosplay: People who criticize you for "being wrong" really need to freaking relax! There are tons of methods to be used and what method that works for you is different from person to person! I take advise from different cosplayers and I try out different stuff all the time! In the end I use the methods that works for me and people can't tell me, you or anyone else otherwise. I salute you for showing us your cheap methods! I personally use alot of your methods, but also other things that I've learned for other sources that works the best for me. And there is nothing wrong with that ❤

Manda Panda: I see you work on the hair and costumes and I wonder what you’re doing. Then when you’re done I can’t believe how amazing you made something look with inexpensive tool and materials. You are absolutely amazing!!

Snowflake Crystal: When this started I legit thought it was a 3D video game commercial or promotion. Excellent job with the cosplay!

Amy Cybulski: Wow, I have never seen your method of styling/painting wigs and I am blown away by how awesome this Rikku wig turned out! I have one of my own that was a complete fail that I bought pre-styled. I can't wait to try out your method for future wigs!!!!

Krolshi: Yas Alyson tell them In all seriousness though I love these videos and your methods cause it's like you said, you really don't need any fancy/expensive tools to make your cosplays (or anything really). It's just really motivating, keep it up ❤️❤️❤️

mcneri123: I recently painted a wig like this and it turned out amazing!!! Thank you! I learned it from another vid that you uploaded:D

Chusei chan: I LOVE alternate tutorials like this one because you learn so much and I'm so inspired! Proof even with a little you can make a lot. Thank you so much for sharing!!

Maevamilk: Seriously Alyson, you are a QUEEN. I like your way of finding how to make what you want, and those tips with the glue and the paint... Nobody could have think about that! ✨

Sveva Imperio: I know that I will make and absolute mess the first time I try this technique but holy shit, it looks so good! I loooove that you use cheap stuff and make into something so professional and expensive looking, that's my favourite thing about cosplay. You really are in inspiration for me because you're a living proof that you don't need to blow hundreds of dollar to make a cosplay look realistic and polished, it's the art and the patience behind all the work that does it! Can't wait to get my hands on a cheap wig and destroy it while trying to replicate your results lmao

Susie Clark: I love how budget your cosplays always are! It's very encouraging.

G -san: Great tutorial and another great transformation! I’m always so amazed how you can make yourself look like the character you are cosplaying.

LittleNintendoGirl: In love how unique and how motivating you are to help others try new things your an amazing role model to look up to

horselover: This is such an interesting way to style an Up-Do! I never thought it would look that good if I'm honest, but it did. Thank you for the tutorial <3

Fl1rr: That method is amazing! I think I'll try this out when I get home, not because I have a current project, but because it also looks fun doing it! Thank you:D

SevereLea: This has my artsy painter side wanting to experiment. Feeling so inspired! Loved this video <3

Merrigan: This is mesmerizing to watch! I've done something similar with my wigs, by dabbing dark eyeshadow into the roots of light wigs to make them look more natural, but I will definitely try the acrylic paint next time!

Amy Munro: Love this way to do up-dos! Can’t wait to try it. I also love how your painted wigs look and totally wanna try it one day. :) keep doing the amazing work!

idiggthis: For some reason, I find watching you both fascinating and therapeutic. It's like watching an informative ASMR video hosted by my favorite cosplayer.

I’ve been hovering over the idea of rikku for a long time and your entire tutorial made me really push to start this cosplay. I’ve been in a huge cosplay rut for years now and I thank you for being such an inspiration for me.

MizzCombobulated: I would NEVER have guessed this was a $10 wig at first! Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us!

chaotic costumer: I've watched this video several times and I'm really excited and a little nervous to actually attempt this styling method! This was a great video!

Zoe Welli: This is great! Thank you so much for uploading this. I’m looking forward to try that on my own

Tasoq: Rikku's always been my favourite FFX character I love seeing how people do their costumes

PurpleMako: I would’ve never thought of using glue to style wigs. It’s genius!! I’ll definitely be using that technique with all of my future wigs, tysm!!

Queenie The Royal Pain: When I did this cosplay I took an older blonde wig and cut it up to make the wefts that made the ponytail. Thank God the two wigs were the exact same color.

givemeprimelaughter: Ok, first of all, you look IDENTICAL to Rikku!! She is my fave and I adore your cosplay of her. Excited to watch the cosplay and makeup tutorials now. Thank you.

Sanji: This was very informative and helpful! I will be trying out these methods myself for sure. You're amazing, please never change.

Donna M: This is awesome! Thank you for this video. I'm super inspired to try this for a wig of my own now!

Rina Kaa: This tutorial brings me back to the time in cosplay where there were no good wigs or specifically cosplay made materials to use and everything was paper mache, cardbord and a lot of improvisation skills

RisingShadowSeer: This was the first video I found from you and I'm off to go watch more! Thank you got sharing this!

hitomitomtom: Truly amazing as always! ✨✨✨

Caitlin G: This is absolutely amazing! How do you not glue the wig to the wig stand, though? Doesn't the hot glue drip through?

Rachel Downey: Thank you Alyson! I have a wig I bought for a Kaguya Shinomiya cosplay and it's so bulky. I have been trying to find a good tutorial to give me a base on how to restyle it and this gave me the best vision of how I can make it work. I love all your work. Thank you so much!

染み栗鼠: it's awesome to see such a skilled cosplayer use cheap unconventional methods! to each their own, if it works, then it's good enough haha. thank you for the insightful video! I gotta ask though, what if the wig gets wet? Don't the paint and glue come off?

Haruckio: Thanks for the video! I've tried the wig painting method you use and i like it. I really like your work, and i always learn new trixs and methods from watching your videos

Alles Kunst: omg, this is so awesome! I'll definitely re-do my Temari wig, cause I was really unsatisfied the first time with it. Do you have good tips for hiding your original hair better? Cause my hair has so much volume, that the wig doesn't look like real hair when I wear it (looks like I've a XXL skull or something)

dabrunettebettie: Do you put anything underneath your wig? I had my styrofoam head melt when I made my CATS wig. Lol And who would give you thumbs down for this video?!? You gave some very interesting techniques I've never thought of and will have to try. I really wanna cosplay Rogue and finding that wig is impossible. But now I think it is achieveable. Thank you for sharing this. ❤️

Dr Tanya Shringarpure: Omg! You absolute Goddess!! This was amazing to watch! Thank you for your tips, really! May I ask though.. how do you store these? Especially in a smaller storage space and keep it dust free with pets in the house? Or how do you spruce up something like this once you've gotten it out of storage?

Li: I love the paint method and heres why. I have tried it on wigs before! It reallg does work, It can change the texture of the fibers, I used it when i needed to add color and structure to an old wig. Also if the acrylic paint makes it too stiff for your desired result watering down more or mixing fabric paint in it could soften it up! :D

shinobuchan: Wow this is insane. I love that you share your tips with the world . I'm gonna have to try this one day! Kisses from Uruguay!

Holly Wolf: Love it! I have to make this soon so I’m totally gonna use this hehehehehe

Julia Robinson: Looks sooo good!!! how long did the whole process take you to do?

Stephie Leaf: thanks a lot for this!!! you saved my life! now I hope to find a large wig so I can wear it on and than follow your guide! I love the way you colored your wig! the outcome is a realistic effect! thx a lot again! I love your videos!

Celeste Karraker: love the final product! I want to try this but I’m worried it wouldn’t work with a curly wig (haru from p5). would the curls end up looking stiff and crunchy? or would it end up ok?

kira Wlan: I rarely write comments but this one I’ll have to make. Your videos are amazing and really show someone how to do great things on a low budget. Also you explain everything so well and your voice is super soothing. All in all you are amazing! Please keep going!

Narga Aoki cosplay: This is genius! I always struggle with ponytails, now I really want to try your technique with hot glue. Thank you so much for sharing. Your Rikku is perfect ❤

ReverieCosplay98: Amazing transformation. All of the cutting and reapplying had me worried... the paint trick really does work- I taught myself the same thing! ;-D

Julie Le Bouguenec: Your cosplay are too much perfect that make me cry!!!!!!! It's a pleasure to watch how you proceed with little things and not expensive

Yukina Kei: Is this your method for talon widowmaker wig? Im planning to cosplay her and most of my references comes from you it really helps me a lot. Thank you Alyson

Leila G721: I watch all your videos to inspire me more to be a cosplayer. I really think you are one of the best cosplayer around the world.

Koda Wolf: I never would have thought to use paint with wig styling. This is genius and I’m going to use this technique

Sabrina Hansen: I love your painting method for wigs! Its really important to use cheaper acrylics though, because those dry matte. I went with my more expensive acrylics that I use for actual paintings at first and it made my wigs look even more shiny than before, then I switched to the cheaper variety of paint and it works wonders!

Stella Frey: What kind of glue did you use for styling in the end? Awesome video! I'm shocked how it starts and how it comes out!

Michelle Marlow: I absolutely love your tutorials!! I may be doing something like this with the hot glue and such with my boosette wig

Strike -kun: Wow. I never though about using glue for shaping my wigs. I will try with one of my old wig to see how I'm doing. :D Thank you for the tips. ;)

Elise Aspinall: I love your videos so much, I always watch them and I made a jack sparrow cosplay inspired by your cosplay of him and your wig tutorial worked really well for making his wig, I hope you can come to conventions in the UK they are super fun and I would love to be able to meet you ^^ thank you for posting videos

Venus Kitteh: Not going to lie in the beginning I was extremely judgmental and in disbelief. Then at the end I was floored. Your method is yes unconventional but also really creative and amazing.

Marija Morticia: Wow I am so mind-blown!!! I'm so inspired now. Thank you for the tutorial! ❤️

kurinwonderful: Amazing!! Looks so professional and very practical method, makes a lot of sense!

Hilda Grants: I am totally going to try this paint method on my kingdom hearts aqua wig!

cinnamonannie: I wouldn't have thought of something similar, it's true that we always should try different methods. Thanks for uploading this tutorial. I have two curious questions: how do you pack your wigs for traveling and how do you store them at your house? They sure need some space o.o

ĚŇ: THAT INTRO I freakin love that song so much. I used to let it play everytime I turned on the game.

Pikaboubou: Awesome work! You just keep blowing me away girl ❤

Ashe Ybarra: I hope to one day try this. I love love Rikku and want to cosplay her! ^.^ Such a good method for cheap wigs!

Kristen Jones: love the transformation of such a cheap wig. going to try the craft glue instead of hairgel method!

Alys: I planned on cosplaying Rikku and was wondering how to do her hair. thank you for this video

Rebecca Killam: This is amazing! How did you make the wig head sized correctly for your head?

Aryl: You are a freaking genius, that's amazing. Rikku was always my favorite FF character ever since I was big enough to put my hands on this game. I literally styled my hair like this almost every day for most of 4th grade even though I'm not blonde Only one little comment though: too bad you used the FFX-2 for your background music while you're actually doing FFX Rikku. Would you be keen to make a FFX-2 WIG though? Such a challenge! Her hair is such a mess in this one but I love it. Her costume though... Bit too revealing for my own taste.

YourHorridDaydream: The picture you have this tagged for.. i literally thought this was an art tutorial and got curious. the way you did your make-up and wig, along with the angle, you looked so much like rikku! amazing! Edit: by art tutorial i meant drawn or digital :3

whutch1: That’s incredible! Thanks for sharing!

Dorte Iversen: This tutorial has given me new hope for myself as a cosplayer! Thank you! One question though, do you use any specific glue for your glue-gun? I already intended to go buy my stick "professionally" as what I usually buy is useless at keeping a hold, so I wondered if you had any recommendations? (Brands preferably as I might not have access to the same stores in Denmark <3)

Michi Go: After watching the costume video I was sure most of the budget went to the wig but I’m so happy I was wrong, I always thought you had to use incredibly expensive materials for this like this, I’m amazed; thank you for making me ecstatic about returning to cosplay

Hawk: God you are amazing! I’m gonna try this technic out. I’ve been trying to style a wig in a sorta Mohawk and it looks awful. I’m such a chicken shit when it comes to cutting the wigs but I have a cheap amazon wig that I’ll test on.

Chaosiferus: My first time doing this and my wig is so thick! It's hard to even cut through it! Hoping I can get this to work!
