Hi everyone i'm here today to show you what you can do if you purchase a wig. That is too light for you and instead of returning it, maybe you could put low lights into it. So in front of you, you are looking at two tressallure mias. Both of them are in the color velvet cream, so they're the exact same wig in the exact same color and on the left. So this one right here, i've done nothing to that one. That is how velvet cream comes out of the box on the right right here. That is mia a little bit modified with a copic marker. So let me show you when i say copic marker what i mean i might not be able to get it to focus there. We go copic sketch marker furniture, markers will work as well and i've used both, and so in the description of this video, i will link the exact copic marker that i use, but i will also link the furniture markers that i like and that i've used as Well, on wigs, now i'm going to turn these around for you, so that you can see how i mean you. I think you can already see how much darker the other one is, but i'll turn them around for you so that you can see without the faces. Okay, so here's a look at both of these side by side. I have obviously done a lot of highlighting, or i should say, low lighting on the one on the right with my copic marker and i'll show you the technique that i use, but it's really really easy and, depending on how much you want to do, it may Only take you a couple of minutes. This one took me a little longer because i wanted to put low lights throughout the hair. Not just add rooting, but if all you want to do is add a little rooting. It'S super quick and super simple. It makes a huge difference, i'll um put these on for you, so that you can see what they look like on me, but it really makes a huge difference. So i highly encourage you if you've purchased a wig, that's too light for you or one that you want rooting on i'd. I really suggest that you consider buying a furniture marker or a copic marker. You may already have furniture, touch-up markers in your house and go ahead and add some lowlights. It will make all the difference. So let's take a quick look at the rooting and then i'll. Let you see them on me. Okay, so here we go. This is what the top looks like, so i've rooted. You can see. I'Ve done some rooting here and then i've taken and put some low lights throughout, but i kept some of the light color and you can see on this one. There is no rooting. Look at how different that looks so different and so natural. It'S not it didn't dry. The wig out it didn't make the wig feel like it has a weird coating on it. It just deposits a little bit of color. That'S all so coming up, we'll take a look at them on me and i'll show you what i did all right here. We are with the rooted version of mia on my head, and so i'm gon na do my best to show you both of these side by side and then throw another, the other one on me just so that you can see how different the rooting makes. Her look, i mean even from this angle right here. Can you see that and you can do as much or as little as you want? I really wanted to get them a darker overall look, so i spent quite a bit of time, rooting and then putting in low lights, and it really makes a huge difference. Just see that color difference so over time you can add more rooting. You can start out with just a little bit and see how you like it. Something that i think is important to keep in mind is that this doesn't completely wash out. So let me grab the marker here, so this will fade as you wash the wig, but i don't think it will always completely come out kind of depends on how much you put on it. I have done this on my girl, mono hot hazelnut mix. My original rooting, video is actually on that wig and it does fade over time and sometimes i touch it up and sometimes i don't you know i do start to get a little bit more used to the lighter color and then maybe i don't need it to Be quite as dark, so let me just show you the technique that i use. You can do this on your head or you can do this on a wig head so um this particular marker has a fat end, which is what i use. It also has a skinny end, which i don't use. I actually wish that this were just a little bit fatter actually, but so then all i do is, i start off right around the part line and i just literally getting focus here draw on the hair. Just you know cut quite more more heavy-handed kind of at the root, because i'm looking to add rooting you can see, i be careful not to get it on the monofilament. I don't want to stain that and that's all i do to add rooting and then to add the lowlights. I just pick hair that i want to maybe be a little bit darker. This is challenging to do on camera, and then i just paint down the hair depending on how much you're going to do. You might want to use a mannequin head for that part of it just because it can get a little tedious, a little tiring to do it on your own head, and sometimes you really have to hold the fibers taut to make sure that you're actually able to Draw on them because they do have a tendency to want to move around. I'Ve tried lots of different ways. I'Ve tried like um, holding it against, maybe a paper plate and drawing on it. That way, i just find it's usually easier to hold it taut and then draw down the fiber, but whatever works best for you is great. I don't think there's any wrong way to do that. So let me grab the lighter color one now and let me put her on it's dramatic. I think it's dramatic. They both have just a little bit of a different curl pattern and a different level of poof, and that was the case before i rooted her. So don't assume that this uh, the rooted one, looks different because i rooted her, they did come just a little bit slightly different. This one is a little bit poofier. I think the permatease feels a little bit more prominent than this one see just so much darker overall, and i love that. That'S exactly the look. I was going for all right everyone. I hope this was helpful. It'S an encouragement to you that you're able to really work with a wig. If you get one, i would say if you are struggling with color air on the side of lighter versus darker, because this technique can help you. I haven't figured out how to lighten a wig yet and so a synthetic wig, and so i'm not sure you know when you go too dark, you're kind of stuck, but definitely going a little bit lighter. Now, if you got a platinum blonde, i do think that's going to be harder to root. I think the more extreme change you're trying to accomplish you run the risk of not being able to accomplish that. So my first one was a was a basically an auburn that didn't have any low lights and didn't have any rooting, and that was girl, mono on hot hazelnut mix and i needed the low lights and the rooting, and that was perfect. This is probably the lightest wig i've successfully rooted. I did. I do have a video out there with estetica finn, and that was, i think it was for the color 1420. It might have been 1226 with no root and that one didn't work. I don't know what happened at that time, but it didn't look right to me and this one, i think, is not that much darker than finn, but for whatever reason it worked so i'd start slow. Maybe try rooting some of the layers underneath the top layer, just in case you don't like the way that it looks because, like i said, i don't think that this will wash all the way out. It does fade quite a bit, but i don't know that it washes all the way out. So just take it a little bit at a time, but i have done this on probably five weeks now i have multiple wig sisters, who've emailed me or messaged me and said that they did it as well and it worked great. So i believe this is a viable option for you to help you on your wake journey. Some people will be naysayers about this, and so you've got to be really uh. You'Ve got to educate yourself. You'Ve got to test this out on your own and you know do your very best to go slow so that in case you don't like it, but i can't see any cons to this. I'Ve not ruined any well the fin i ruined only because i washed it so many times, but other than that i haven't ruined any wigs. I really love this technique, so thanks for watching everybody, let me know if you have questions, have a good one and i'll talk to you soon.

Lea Spr: This is amazing!! The rooting also makes the mono part even better, because this isn't darkening the knots. Such a helpful video, thank you!

Shelly F: Hi Denise. I love the darker version on you! The color really brings out your eyes. Thanks for demonstrating this! Shelly

gloria johnson: This was SO helpful!!! I got one that had bright golden highlights and this kept me from sending it back… now I love it!! Thank you and God Bless❤️

Robin's Wig Party: This is great, definitely need to do this with several wigs. Thanks!!

Marie S: Thank you for this video. I've been able to make several of my wigs more wearable. It's not as dark as i wanted, maybe i need a different shade but it still gives definition to the wig and looks more natural.

Doodica: It turned out amazing! Thanks for showing options that can help us with wigs that aren’t quite right, but we want to try to rehab. Now it looks like you have “summer” hair and “winter” hair. Just love it!

Melanie Deardorff: This is so great to know — thank you! I have a topper that I bought off eBay that is too light so I will try your tips. It’s heat-friendly synthetic topper, though. Think that would be ok to try it on?

Lily K: Thank you so much for this. I rooted a RoP topper that was too light for me and now it's the perfect color for my hair.

Marlene Olson: Every time I watch this, I’m blown away! The last time I saw it, I went on Amazon and got furniture markers but haven’t used them yet. So the other day I bought a wig on Amazon (Wiginway, which is usually not bad) and I received it today. It was just under $20 so I wasn’t expecting much. Oh my gosh....it is the CUTEST wig! I absolutely love it except for one thing: the little bit of highlighting on top. I think it was supposed to be dark blonde (rest of the wig is med brown) but it is gray. Although still really cute anyway, I know I would get teased mercilessly by the grandkids. So I’m going to get out those markers and color that gray away! I might even try it on some other wigs I don’t wear because they’re too light. Wish me luck....

Debera Crabb: What a great idea I can’t believe that you can do that....thank you for this fantastic tip!

Sharon L: And here I sit on my bedroom floor rooting my Noriko Sky in Dark Rust. It was just way too bright! Thanks Denise for giving me the confidence to finally use my markers

allykatt1849: What a great idea! I have a BelleTress in butter beer blonde that I would love to darken the root a bit. Thanks for sharing! Great job!

DHG Heart Written: Very pretty! Great job, Denise! I tried to lighten a root on a blonde wig with a Copic marker, but it didn't work.

Truth be Known: This was so helpful! Great job! I really like the Estetica color 30/28/26 but it is just a little too light for me. I need some brown so that it does not wash me out. I think I may try that color again using this technique. So awesome. God Bless.

L S: That's a great transformation of the original color. Looks professional and believable. They really look like the altered one came like that right out of the box. GREAT job! Haven't needed to try altering the color on any of the pieces I have, but think what you have done is so clever and, btw, both colors look amazing on you.

Clara: What a difference! Try thanks for sharing Denise ❤️

Nevine Grosso: I so enjoy watching your channel. I used a grey furniture marker to turn golden blond highlights ashy. It worked.

RubyRazzie: Thanks so much for this, Denise! I'm going to buy a Copic marker tomorrow. I have worked with the furniture markers on one of my Paula Young wigs, and although successful in the beginning, I was not happy with the color it turned when I washed it. I'm going to try the Copic over those sections. I think this is a great technique, especially if you have a too light wig that is non-returnable. ~Jill in SoCal

Leslie Nelson: You are amazing! This is a great tutorial. Thanks.

bvdragonlady: Wow, amazing! It looks awesome!

Dee Roga Tory: This is so amazing. Well done!

Amy Pope: You've given me the nudge that I needed to work on some of my less-worn wigs... I have a Toni Bratton wig, Trendsetter (in Dark Blonde) that is, to me, almost orange... so maybe low-lights will help the orange look less ghastly if I low-light with some medium brown. I bought some furniture markers about a year ago, and haven't once even tried them! Thanks, Denise!

KA Pirk: This really is a clever modification. I’d love to see it after washing.

Stephen Carter: I used a root touch up to make my mom's old wig look rooted I was thanking it would wash out but it doesn't and it come out pretty good so mom thanks she get a new rooted wigs.

Who piddled on your post toasties: Great idea and demo. Definitely can see the difference.

Jeannie Deal: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! THANK YOU!!! GORGEOUS. EXCITED TO TRY ON SOME!!

E S: I love that. This would also allow you to take advantage of sales on wigs that don't come in any color you want!

Mar Arellano: Beth this an incredible process You’re so smart! That’s a pretty great idea! Thanks! Wish earlier I can buy an other wig, but is these a lace front wig? And when you wash it, the rooting is gone?

Front Porch Wig Chat: It is AMAZINGLY realistic, would not even know it had been altered (and I didn't, even looking closely, wow)! This color is really different from straight to wavy to curly and from unit to unit. If doing this makes a wig more wearable for someone, it can save some $$$, for sure!

Sharon Garrity: Thank- you so much!! I needed this. I just got a wig and I like the style but the color is to light and of course I can not re turn it. Thank-you.

Jude Christenson: Great video...Your makeup looks perfect. Stay well❤️

Angela Ohanian: I love this Denise, how clever.. do you know anyway you can you add highlights to synthetic wigs in any way?

Deborah Ahonen: I’m a natural light ash blonde shot through with white (seems like more white every week lol), and I’m frustrated by the few non-rooted blonde colors available in toppers these days.I’ve used white hair spray paint to cover dark roots and it looks decent- like I have light graying roots. It takes away the shine so the hair actually looks more natural. I brush some blonde hair powder here and there over white spray painted roots and it pulls everything together. I may try adding white highlights using the white hair spray paint.I do it in the shower to keep from getting spray everywhere. The painted hair is just a bit stiffer, like it’s been hair sprayed. I don’t like the too-yellow blonde spray-on root covers available, and I’ve tried many. I’ve used light taupe Copic markers in the past to add pale ashy shadow rooting to platinum blonde toppers- worked great! My next project will be toning a too- warm topper to get it more ash in tone, using Rit dye and alcohol, per some YouTube videos. Wish me luck!

Eileen Langdon: Hi Denise. I’m new to your Chanel, and am so happy I found this. I have some wigs that are too dark and are Ginger brown. I would love to highlight with a reddish tone. Do you think something would work?

Marlene Olson: UPDATE: today I got brave and did it.....I used the furniture markers I had purchased from Amazon a while back. I used it on my cheapo Amazon wig - it had what I thought were blonde highlights on top, but there were gray (white, really). There was a LOT of it. So I sat here watching YouTube videos while I “colored” my hair. I used several of the colors trying to find the one I like and I have to tell you: it turned out AMAZING!! You absolutely cannot tell at all. I left just a couple of the white highlight here and there and with the various different markers I used, it gave the wig more depth and highlights. The highlights are not very noticeable, but I just can’t get over how great it looks! And soooo easy (it took me about an hour - a relaxing hour). Thank you SO much for this info!! I had watched this video when it first came out but was too afraid to try it. Thank you.

Tara Linn: Hi Denise. I have watched 3 or your videos on how to add a root and lowlights to a synthetic wig. Have you created a video that goes into more depth on how you did this exactly with furniture markers and Copic markers? If not, would you consider making a video like this soon? I am considering doing this with a wig I purchased that is a little too light for me. I am nervous to start and would like to see how you pull the marker through to the ends of the hair. This video is my favorite transformation. The end results is stunning on this wig. I wish I could buy this color, seriously. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us all! Your wig sister, Tara

robin fineman: Wow! I have a few wigs I was going dump because the color was not for me. I'm looking forward to this.

Alice S: Great video! Will this work on making a dark wig lighter?

Tonya Moore: Oh my goodness! Does this take a long time? The darker wig looks like it would be a lot to darken with just a marker. It looks like you done the whole wig!!! But awesome job.

ItsJoan NotJoann: That color is perfect on you and I don't think anyone would ever guess you altered the color!!

Debra Dentler: Thank you. I want to tone down my blonde wig.

Lorene: Wow, looks great!

Donna Kenworthy: this sounds like just what I need for my latest wig purchase, way too light around my face. Can anyone tell me if the Copic pen smells as strong as the furniture markers?? AND if you used furniture markers, did that smell diminish when it dried???

Patty Carosi: Thank you Denise very helpful information. Not sure but did you say you can add light color to a dark wig? I saved this video I will be watching it many times.

Aura Aurora: Oh my! I have not been able to find a grey wig that has enough white in the front (like my own hair) so now maybe I can get a light grey hair and add brown in. So much thanks as it opens up a new avenue for my wig journey.

Jerry Scott: HELP!!! I am going to root a Avalon in Smoky Rose. Any suggestions on which colors might work best? Thanks in advance for your advice.

MoonDancersBoutique1: I also thought about if a furniture marker would work,,, Thank you for trying it out...

Kathleen Simonds: So cool! I need to this to one of mine. Would a professional marker work as well? My daughter uses them.

Margie Cross: Thanks The information I would’ve never thought of it

Geri Weyer: You did a GREAT JOB

Dawn Stamper: Wow! Stunning!!!

mattiesful: Denise, can u do a tutorial on how to do the low lights. They r amazing n I have. jR haute that is way too yellow. TIA!

S.A. Kenyon: Wow!, Amazing transformation.

CherryBoo65 B: Gorgeous!

Veronica Taylor: For rooting, I did to my Mila JR did the top of the wig with Copic market let it dry good for a couple of days, and then wash it ....after you wash it some color of the Copic markers will come out not much...it then looks like the rooting on a new wig because it's blended...Copic markers also have a blending marker use this in some areas came out is too dark....

Jeweled Bombshell: Is this permanent? Does the color come off on your clothes? Does the color wash out? Where do you purchase the pens or the furniture paint? I would hate to have to do this every time i wear it

Lady Torres: WOW BRILLIANT!!!

elshy: This is fab.. But, do you rinse it afterwards or just leave it to dry/set? Is it permanent?

kk doc: Can you suggest a root color in copic pen for silky sand (tressallure). It’s a really light color and I’m afraid the dark bark color may be too dark on it. Thank you!!!!!

angelxorae88: I tried loreal blonde colors and they dont seem to be the color they say they are. the spray comes out more golden

Maria Barradas: Thanks to you I made my Innuendo rooted and with low lights, she was to brassy for my taste but I love the cut and the fibers, she is a lot darker with some highlights, a dark brown root and it did not take me a lot of time...you did an mazing job, keep teaching us please.

Emily Rosenzweig: Holy moly what a transformation!!

Cindy B: How about using a crochet cap to pull the hair through, it makes it easier to put color in the areas that you want.

Judy Anne: Use blonde with dark roots MAGIC ROOT COVER by Loreal

Cheryl J: Denise, not all furniture markers are created equal. Some run when washed. The Copic, or any alcohol marker is very permanent. Have you found this over time? As you say, there may be fading, but with the alcohol, the wash water is not discolored. I want to darken a JR 14/26/10. I just don’t know if should give it a base color with rit dye. Any ideas? I love your deeper Mia! Oh, when you’re marking curls, I found that the cardboard paper towel roll is perfect to wrap the curls over and then hold down to color.

Jill Creagh: What colour is the marker please?

Ivy: Is copic washable?

Christine Dungworth:

Chisty A: Looks great, but the color NEVER stops rubbing off. I added a root with a Copic marker. It looked fantastic, but. EVERY TIME I run my hands through the hair, I get a little brown on my hands.

Nancy Deutschman: Summer wig versus winter wig. Fabulous.
