How To Tone And Brighten Blonde Hair At Home

In this video, I'll show you how to tone and brighten already blonde hair at home - at one point you will notice your hair is starting to go brassy and this is an easy fix so you don't have to go and spent hundreds of dollars at the salon quite as often.

Here's my lightning formula for hair that is already blonde but just needs that extra pop of lightness. (Use only if needed) and it causes very minimal damage to hair.

1oz powder bleach

1oz 10 vol developer

Mix and apply to areas where lightning is desired.

Toner formula. Tones out yellowing, and uneven tones in blonde. ( will not work on orange hair or brunette hair.

1/3 oz 09T shades eq

1/3 oz 09N shades eq

1/3 oz 09V shades eq

1oz crystal clear

2oz processing solution

Shake well and apply to day hair.

Let sit for 2-5 mins

Hey guys welcome back to my channel in today's video, I am so excited to finally show you how I tone my own hair. This is a toner. I use a lot in the salon a lot of the pictures of my work that I post on Instagram, and so many of you guys asked like what toter is. That was like the magic formula. Different appointments obviously require different toners many times, sometimes even on the same head, I'll use like a different one on the roots and the different one on the ends. But overall, this is my most used formula for toning blonde hair. So I'm going to show you how to go from this to this, my hair was starting to get kind of yellowish just because I haven't been using a purple shampoo and I've kind of just been sort of neglecting my hair, so my hair was getting pretty yellowy That I was like you know what it's time like, I'm finally going to tow my hair and show you guys exactly the steps and the formula that I use for that and since I was doing that, I figured why not like just intensify it. Obviously, you can use this for just the toner. If that's all, you need, but if your hair, just kind of feeling like dull and kind of just not really buttery bright blonde and just kind of like lifeless, I'm going to show you how to go over existing blonde hair, where you can go in and paint In a little bit of late to just really make your hair pop, so obviously this isn't like necessarily for someone who's like brunette or you know, still not at their desired blonde. But someone that has been blonde but now feels like their hair is just feeling a little more dull, so stay tuned and let's get started alright. So here we go starting off with this super brassy orange a hair, so you'll need is a full in a brush. I would actually recommend ten-volume I'm using 20 volume, because it's what I had, but definitely 10 volume is, will be more gentle on your hair and will give you like that. Just the perfect amount of lift. I am mixing that, obviously with bleach, you can use any bleach, I'm here using the Wella extra cool bleach. So I start by grabbing sections of the hair, where I feel are extremely warm colored, as you can see this piece here. Obviously, that has a little bit of root. That'S why it's more foreign G, but definitely grabbing the pieces that need it the most and I'm just going to apply it like the way you would kind of balayage and really just paint that on what I would recommend. Avoiding is like your actual roots are like darker, like actual dark pieces of hair, like I kind of have like the brownish roots. If you apply just ten volume to that, it will just make it kind of orange E, and it won't, you know, really lift it to that bright blond. So this is four sections of hair which have already been lifted and already look blonde, and in order to make this process a little bit easier for you when you're working on your own hair. Of course you just need to bring everything forward and the beauty of like doing kind of a balayage effect is that that's very easy, because everything you bring forward, you don't really have to work up all the way up to the scalp, so it just you know, It'S a much more kind of easy application and really like still leaving you with perfect results. Then I also like to concentrate around the face, so these pieces and just closest to the front I'm getting as close to the root as possible, but again not touching that brown and even though these front pieces didn't necessarily need to be much more lightened. They'Re not exactly Brasier than the rest of my hair, but anything surrounding the face just looks good a little bit lightened and these pieces in the back. They obviously get less Sun and kind of less processing time, so these tend to be a little bit warmer. So definitely making sure to get all those kind of warmer pieces in the back and the good thing with bleach and doing this sort of effect is you can almost envision how it will look once it's shampooed out, because you can see where the lightness is so Now is that bleach processes, I wouldn't leave it for any more than 10 minutes. This is a very, very light processing time. We only want a slight lift. So, while that's sitting on the hair, I go ahead and mix my toner, so we can take that into the shower and have that ready to go. So my magic formula is a mix of 1990 and 9n. It is the absolute perfect blend to make sure that you cancel out any warmth, any greens or anything in the lawn hair that absolutely needs to be toned out. This is the absolute most perfect blend for that. So I use a third of an ounce each of the toners equaling, two, obviously one ounce of toner. Then I use one ounce of crystal clear and what that does is that dilutes, the toner just a little bit so that I end up with a ten level result as opposed to a nine. So once that's processed, we are ready to go into the shower. First step is to rinse all of the bleach and everything out of your hair, and then we are ready to tell then I like to let the toner process only about three to five minutes. I kind of just like to watch it so now I've gone ahead and rinsed that, and now it's time for shampoo and I'm using the Mon a balance line shampoo, which you guys have heard me talk about it is my Holy Grail, shampoo it. This is honestly the reason why I am able to do these bleach washes occasionally on my hair and still have hair on my head. It really it heals the hair from the inside out. It'S absolutely the best shampoo system, I've used on my hair and you are ready to rinse that out and blow out your hair. So that is it you guys this is my newly brightened and toned blonde hair. Also, if you have other hair questions, don't forget to follow by hair chat page on Facebook, and it's just a place where many hairdressers, so both myself and other hairdressers can answer all of your hair questions. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video. It'S been a while, since I've like really just give you like formulas and how-to on hair, so I'm definitely excited to be bringing more of that for you guys. So if you do like this type of video, please give this a thumbs up and leave suggestions on what other color ideas and videos that you would like me to film for you guys so anyway. Thank you guys so much for watching. I love you and I will see you in the next video bye

Cierra Stamey: Sylvia--thank you so much for taking the time to make these awesome videos! You are my favorite and most trusted person for hair advice!! Your blonde is my goal!! My hair is always a fine line between gold blonde and the white/"buttery" blonde that you have. I am going to try this trick!! Thank you for being so kind and for helping us!! Xoxo

Trisha H: This is *exactly* what I needed!! Thank you!

Carynn Brown: I love love the color of your hair! I recently got my hair toned at the salon with Redken 9b, 9v, and 9n equal parts. I"m an all over blonde. It turned out super ashy and not the bright buttery blonde I wanted. Before that we were just toning my hair with 9t which was brighter but not quite as bright buttery baby blonde as I wanted it. Do you think that your combo of toner will get me to that bright buttery baby blonde more than just the 9t by itself? Thanks!

Rachael Kerr: Yes, thanks for doing this video. I'm having the same problem. This was super helpful!

Marielle Lopez: For impetuous girls like me that ran to Sally's rather than ordering Redken online, this is the closest I found and it worked like a charm. Thanks @ellebangs! Toner Recipe: *Ion brand 9v color *Wella T10 (I couldn't find 9T) *age beautiful 9n * Age beautiful clear shine color (it's next to all the other hair colors, but it says clear) *20 volume Clairol clear developer

Karin Tolbert: I'm an older lady and grandma(57). I think blonde hair is beautiful! I don't color my hair. Except I did have it highlighted a couple times years ago. And was pleased with it. But what I'd like to say is thank you for taking time to show us this diy color thing. Your hair looks very pretty! I appreciate you and the time you took⚓God bless ya!

Mechee D: I did this a few days ago and it turned out great. Thank you!!!

Lisa Borsella: Thank You for this tutorial, and all your great advice and knowledge!I love the color of your hair! You look as gorgeous, and this color and tone look like you were born to be..So glad we can look for you whenever we need help, or to learn some great new technique you are doing! You are beautiful inside and out...I can see you truly want to help others achieve their goals too.You also love what you do, and sharing that gift with all of us. Thank You always.

Ash N: Thank you, this helped me so much! Now I'm glad I was lazy and didn't tone my hair earlier this week like I was planning :)

Angelina Badalyan: I needed this! Thank you!!

Gina B: I love it. It turned out beautiful. I will definitely try this. My blonde is natural and turning brassy,I think it's hittious. I can't wait to try this. Thank you so much sweetheart!!!

Kim Mitterko: I appreciate your at home coloring tips. I prefer having my hair done at the salon however, sometimes finances don't allow for a salon visit. so it's nice to have another option for in between :) Thanks

Ashley Wooten: Thanks so much for sharing your toning formula! I am a little confused about one thing, though. In the video, you only mention mixing the 3 toners with 1 oz of Crystal Clear. However, below the video where you have provided the details, 2 oz of processing solution is listed under Crystal Clear. Can you clarify? Thanks so much! Love your videos :-) Ashley

Colleen Bender: Thankyou sooo much for this video!!! This is by far one of the easiest and BEST ways to freshen up pre-exsisting blonde hair!!! Even when BLEACHING as you did & only using Wella T18 toner! Still turned out Fantastic! Worked Out perfectly!!! Thankyou thankyou Girl! Love you & ALL your amazing hair tips/ videos !!!!!❤❤❤❤✂

Ankita Tripathi: I did this and my blonde looked as good as it did the first day out of the salon. Thank you muahhh <3

Kelly Stacey: Looks fab! I love blonde hair but unfortunately my hair can't take any bleach, as it just snaps off, so I'm natural brunette. But I still love watching these videos

Kopfkino: Thanks a lot. This is super helpful. I have the exact same problem, and I'm gonna try it that way.

Leah Rose: Too funny, I just did this exact thing to my hair a few days ago lol. It works really well!

debra Ragsdale: I really enjoy your videos and have learned sooo much good information. I just put some highlights in my hair THEN used the Wella T11 toner you talked about in a previous video. It came out GREAT. I've never been more pleased with my results and it only cost me $16 not $115 my stylist charges :)

Lisa M: I have tried several of your different color/toning/lowlights processes and I haven't had a bad process yet. The next one I do I will send a pic of. You are a great teacher and I hope you don't stop sharing!

Grace Blevins: Thanks so much!! Your videos are awesome and your hair is gorgeous!! Love your whole look!

Kelsey Ardis: Thank you I needed this! I got my blonde but I wanted it just a little brighter. Wasn’t sure if I should go over my previous bleached hair or not. Thanks.

IMO: Her color is beautiful (hair goals) it brightens her face and is perfect for her flawless skin. All that matters is that she likes it and it makes her feel at her best.

JLE: Love your videos, you are very relatable and down to earth!

Jen Needre: I was right about using the same formula. except I'll occasionally swap out the 9t for the 9p. I find it to be a bit softer. :) depending on the client of course. but always the v and n.

Isabella Dugarte: Beautiful thank you! Very artistic of you! Loved it.

Gerri Everett: Thank you for the formulas and the times! Perfect!!

Amanda Dan: Hi, thank you so much for your videos! I have a question about something I experience when toning. So I know that everyone says that these toners don't lift, but I feel like they do and not in a good way! If I'm trying to tone just my bleached areas with a 20 volume or even 10 volume, my surrounding natural hair (medium brown) gets lifted just enough to reveal some very warm dark brown-red brassy tones which throw off the cool-toned look I'm going for. Why would this happen in my hair and how can I avoid this? I've actually gone back and just bleached everything so that I don't have to worry about where the toner goes but I really wish I didn't have to do this. Again thanks for your tutorials and insights and you're gorgeous! : )

Princesswarrior JP: I used your toner combination and it's ”PERFECT” Thank you so much:) Love all your videos... Trying to start doing my own hair at home I love everything about your coloralso, I caught one of your older videos I think where you talked about nasty comments people leave and you said one was saying that you were ugly? I'm like WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME? seriously, I had to say something because you are absolutely stunning and whoever said that it's obviously jealous of your beauty :) just wanted to say that have a wonder day and thanks for your awesome tutorials I'm a big fan❤️❤️❤️

Debbie Navedo: perfect timing! ive been so desperate to tone and brighten my hair but haven't been able to get to a salon. if my blonde hair is only a level 7, can i still use this technique to brighten it? i would like to work my way up to a 10 one day

Brandusa Enachescu: Great video! Is it possible to use the same formula on completely grey hair (my mom is leaving her hair all grey) just to even out all the grey? Thank you so much!

Joanna Wądołowska: gdybym mogła wszystko przetłumaczyć . AJ świetne porady naprawdę, pozdrawiam

Arelis Garcia: Love watching your videos thank you so much

Blingee Thingee: This video was sooooo helpful... Thank you:)

Pisces Eyes: I think I need to do this before I hit it with the T18. I bleached and toned last weekend but I am yellow still, don’t think I left the toner on long enough either. Love how white your hair looks here.

Steffan James: how often can you tone your hair and have it still be healthy? I just toned my today after I did an olaplex treatment. I used wella t13 with 20 vol and it is very ashy/almost silver/purple. I really wanna do some balayage and use this toning formula asap! love you elle!

Steffan James: how often do you need to wait between bleachings? I did a balayage on my hair yesterday and I didn't get it as light as I wanted so I need to do a second application. also I just bought the redken ph bonder..have you ever used it? thoughts?

Suzy Lithavong: hi this helps me a lot!! I went back to using shade eq on my clients. The 9B and 9T actually scares me because I get afraid of the hair turning grey when Im trying to just tone out the warmth and try to make a cool blonde. If you can do more videos on shades eq and videos on avoiding warmth on natural level dark hair that will be great. Also if you have any tips on zone 1 and zone 2 for the lower level shades of like 6T or 6N or 6V or 7V. I haven't yet tried it for zone 1 and zone 2. I usually just use 6ash igora on zone 1 and then tone all hair with kenra 9PV after bayalage lightener.

swizzleproxi: I'm so glad of your channel giving us the method to do our own hair, I like being in control of my colour, touching up colour trying different things i never thought could be done at home, saves sitting in hair salons.☺

Jena Kirk: You are just amazing. I would love to see a balayage video with a live model! Every balayage class I have taken has been very disappointing so any tips would be great!

Amber Rose booders: I'm glad you posted this! I just used some of the bleach that I'd won from your giveaway from a long while back & loved the tools still, I did the boloyage (spelling?!) to my daughters hair, she's got your natural color but a lil more dirty blonde, not as warm... and her hair is so pretty but she has a few sections that are looking slightly brassy. I'm going back to Sally's tomorrow to get her some purple shampoo and I'll pick some of this up!

Felicia Temple: I wish I knew how to do hair so I could confidently do all of this at home

Tianna Ouellette: wow this was so helpful! thank you :) love the colour on you

Melissa: I do have naturally curly hair. This is inspiring and I am feeling more at ease. I am feeling more confidence.

linda salfen: I love watching your videos. Thank you so much. My hair is dark and of course, at my age, I have a lot of gray growing thru from root now, I also have hilites and just want to brighten it up. I did get an ESalon color for roots - now it is time to start.... yikes! My own hairdresser always does the foil hilites and then puts the color on my roots for my gray.... seems like forever and then she rinses, shampoo and conditions etc.... I'm sure she puts a toner on but it still isn't right it doesn't feel bright like it used to when you get it newly done..- I want more blonde around my face. Can I just use the powder bleach plus 10 volume developer on the pieces I want blonder and just pull them thru myself and paint or would I have to use foil..... its only certain pieces I want I have been going there for years but I want certain random pieces done...??????????

Adriana Marie: love this video. can you use this if you want to brighten up your ends too?

Letícia: Silvia, qual é a diferença entre shampoo roxo e shampoo preto (cinza)? Quando usar qual?

Mary Rangel: Love it, thank you so much for sharing ♏️

Grace Blevins: How long did you let the bleach sit before showering exactly? Thanks for all your great vids!

Jen Ready: Thanks for this! You ROCK! ❤️

HLOG: Love your videos, watch every single one!

Let's Not Panic: Oh, I just LOVE this! It really made a big difference, but you made it make sense, and seem easy! I'm going to do this in exactly 4 weeks when my hair has healed a little more. I love your videos when you show applications of products (of any kind.) You seem happier and lighter in this video, and I hope that means that life is good! <3

Gig Life With Lexi: Love the color! Thank you !!

Angela Oleson: could you do a video on how to lift and tone naturally dark hair? Thanks! love your videos.

B: Yes! Love this video! Perfect timing. Only thing that would make it better is if you sold kits of everything already measured out.. I think it'd be a huge HIT! Where do I find the exact products??? Want to do it NOW!

Tammie Parrish Miller: I always start in the back since it takes longer to process. I always love your hair!

Cecilia Aceves: I love me the demonstration. How long do you wait until you tone again ? How often would u recommend it ?

Marcus Lee: Lol the minute I saw this hair I was like I bet she uses SEQ. Low and behold. SEQ gloss 09t, 09v and 9n are my go to as well for toning out the warmth. I just recently used the new SEQ 09P with clear and it delivered a very pretty pearlescent cool blonde! It might be another go to! Hair looks great!

Truth 2027: Thanks! Can you use a bleach wash to shorten the grow out time for going gray gracefully? I toned my hair platinum blonde and now have 3 inches of white roots - yikes!! Also, have you tried Olaplaex for damage prevention on processes? Appreciate your videos :)

Jenna L: I just dyed my hair 2 days ago and it's really yellow and brassy. How long do I have to wait to tone my hair?

Mary Margaret: I was wondering why you didn't use any 10 vol developer with the toners, do they work without it? Thank you.

aerogirl 1981: What brand of toner are you using? I think I missed that! Thank you. I use Wella T 18 but looking for something new. ❤

IrishKatieKatz: Can I do this on dark blonde highlighted hair and how long did you leave the bleach on for?

00 00: Thank you for this video. I was always concerned that if I applied any bleach to my already lightened hair it would snap off.

Seda Yar: Silvia Hi! Love your channel. Can you please give us some information on Wella colour charm toners that would be similar to toners you mentioned in this video? I have heard that Wella Colour Charm toners tones and lifts at the same time and is very damaging to hair? What is your opinion on this please? I'm not a professional but I would like to SAFELY maintain my hair color at home that is why I follow you. I appreciate your advise and time :)

Misty Hill: Does anyone know what percentage of process solution she's using? I am following this and I noticed it doesn't specify. Any information would be greatly appreciated :)

Katherine Frances: Hello i saw your video and i saw the products you use.. .1/3 oz 09T shades eq 1/3 oz 09N shades eq 1/3 oz 09V shades eq 1oz crystal clear 2oz processing solution The processing solution is that 10 volume Thank you PS I love love you videos and your are just so gorgeous.

Alma Resendiz: At first I was like , hmmmm nah uugg nooo but then when I saw you toning your hair I was like !!he'll yeah !!it looks amazing and that's all that matters , thank u for sharing ur formula

YTFavs: what volume processing solution for toning? - 10 volume?

Nicole Richards: You will get more time from your toner if you leave it on longer. Every minute will be equal to 1 wash ... when using crystal clear you are diluting the formula so it can stay on for 20 mins and should last until your next salon visit. You did an amazing job I love the color Looking at some of the comments her mix is correct 1/3 of each =1oz + 1oz crystal clear (to dilute) = 2ozs + 2ozs developing solutions = 4ozs of product I would leave that on my clients for 20 mins to give the toner more longevity...

Vicki Henry: I used to get something called a Lasaunt. I would love to try this myself. Do you know anything about them and where to purchase the products needed. It has been about 10-15 years since I had one. It just lightens my roots and blended with my other hair so nice and it was fairly quick.

Mandy Thomas: Just did this exact technique last week but with Wella T-18... Works like a charm to bump up your blonde!! Trying 9T and 9V shades eq next time though!

Marley Pup: Exactly what I needed

Pink Truffles: What happens if I were to leave the toner on for longer?

Gracious Grit: Will this toner combination lift my brown roots!? I've been debating on using 9T shades eq toner on my existing balayage, but have been worried about my brown roots turning orange. Also can you please explain what the 2oz processing solution is and what it does to this combo? Every formulation of shades eq I've read about so far only mentions using clear...I'm very confused. I love your tips and advice!

Luana Nieman: Hi Sylvia, I'm looking to lighten my natural blonde hair without bleach? I used to highlight regularly to lighten the colour but it got kind of expensive and I didn't like the texture my hair became due to the bleach. Got any tips?

Makalia Crump: I’m one of your girls who totally made the mistake of making my shadow root orange after it was toned brown What’s a girl to do to correct it? ♥️

TheBeautybound: How to touch up roots when you have highlights? My base is a 6/7 and my highlights are a 9/10. What's the easiest way to do a root touchup without messing up the existing highlights? I don't want to lighten my base, just cover grays and such.

Shruffle: I know silver hair is in, but I think you would look better in a warmer blonde too. Your skin is warm, your eye makeup is warm, your face makeup is warm. You would add a beautiful glow if you warmed up your hair. Like walking sunshine. :)

Felipe Shkrabovsk: Hi. My natural hair colour is a very dark brown hair, almost black and I want it to be a dark ash blonde ( dirty blonde as it's called in Portuguese). What do you recommend? Thank you :)

Molly Moo's Nails: is it possible to add abit of wella T18 or T11 toner into a blonde box dye before applying to already blonde hair, so just abit extra ash strength to cancle out yellow? I know you can do it to regular dyes, in the tubes ect because you can buy "additives to cancle red/gold tones" but don't know about box dye. thank you xx

TiaraTexas: My face the first few minutes lollll I love it

Lisa Cogs: that looks beautiful! My hair is naturally dark brown. when I lighten it always turns brassy copper

Beli Bell: Great video :) Can you do a video on how to do weave highlights, thanks.

Crissiii: is it safe to bleach on already bleached hair. I haven't bleached in about two months hoping to prevent as much damage as possible .

Stacey Del Bucchia: Awesome❤

Brigette Z: Do you use 20v with toner? I thought 20 will lift the brown/dark hair too?

Rebeca Diaz: I wish you hadn't used hair extensions at the end so we could see the full results of the color towards the end, other than that the top color looks really nice and cool toned.
