Hi welcome back to my channel, so today's video, I'm gon na be highlighting and balayage in my hair, I'm gon na be showing you step by step and every product that I'm using for those of you that don't know I am a licensed hairdresser. I am a Redken ambassador and a blonde specialist based out of San Francisco, and I've already met a lot of my subscribers who have come from near and far to sit in my chair and have me do their hair but number one thing that you guys always Want to see on this channel is how I update and maintain my hair color. So basically, I heavily highlight and brighten up my hair about three to four times a year, which is what I'm gon na be showing you today and then for maintenance. I do a few baby lights about every two months or so, which I have shown you in the past now I'll go ahead and link that video here for you. So what I'm gon na be doing on my hair today is a mix of foil balayage and the technique I'm going to be using is teasing, thicker sections of hair, placing them in foil to get maximum brightness and then, in addition to that, I'm gon na be Adding some foils with just classic highlights: I'm also going to be doing a root tap and an all-over toner, and I'm gon na be showing you formulas for all of it. So if you're as excited as I am, let's get into the video so for my lightening formula, I'm gon na be using one ounce of reckons, flash lift with ponder inside and one ounce of 30 volume, then we're gon na mix it all up and we're ready To apply so the way I do my own hair is I like to visualize, where I want the lightness and just artistically place it where I think it will look good. I typically start in the front and around the face just so that those pieces get more lightening time, which means a brighter results just the same way as the Sun would lighten your hair, and you want to mimic that to create a bright. Yet soft look and, of course, using high quality products is the only way you can achieve high levels of lift, while keeping the integrity of the hair in mind and therefore giving you beautiful, healthy, shiny hair results, I'm also using from our foils ohs. What I use in the salon and super easy and a very kind of flexible foil it, which makes it really easy to work on yourself. I often get asked when I do my own hair, how I tackle the back and honestly, it's all about bringing everything forward, but, of course, working in the back in an area that you can't see. There is lots of room for error. So one of the things I like to do is really tease the roots just to maximize softness at the root when applying that Lightner and I'm definitely going in pretty heavy-handed this round because, like I said, I was getting pretty dark. So I processed this for about 35 minutes and then I'm ready to shampoo and condition. Then I just towel dried, my hair and we are ready for the toner, so we're gon na be starting with the root tap toner and the formula I used for that is 1/2 ounce of a 7 n shade CQ half an ounce of oh 9 na plus 1 ounce of processing solution, and I'm just going to be applying that to the roots, feel like this is the magic wand to create softness. It seems like such a subtle step, but it just gives that element of softness to the hair and another reason why I love to finish every color session with the shades eq gloss. Toners is not only for the tonal benefits that you get read: khun's shades, eq toners are scientifically formulated, finish the hair after it's been processed and lightened for a maximum hair health. I like to mix these formulas in a bowl and apply with a brush. I, like the precision I get with painting on the gloss and the creative precision to add just to the areas where I want to add and then for the all-over toner, and for that I'm going to be using half an ounce of oh nine and eight. This was half an ounce of 10 n shades of Q plus one ounce of processing solution. Now I like to focus this toner on the remainder of the hair that was lightened, so I apply it to those areas and then just maybe a minute or two before I'm ready to shampoo my hair, I kind of just massage it through the ends just to Get an overall seamless look, so I let this process for about 10 to 15 minutes and we are ready to shampoo condition and be done all right. Guys - and here is the finished result. So just gently blow-dried, my hair, as you should be very careful after you've lightened your hair. Then you just added some soft beach waves and to finish it all off. I'M gon na be using red khun's a triple pier. 32. Absolutely love this packaging as I've shared in my favorites video, but more than that red consoled hairspray has been a favorite of mine for years, but now that they were a formulated to a more natural scent, I absolutely love the formula and the scent as well. So just finish with a little bit of that alright, so I hope you found this video helpful you're completely caught up on everything new, that's going on with my hair. So I thank you for watching and I'll see you the next one.

ellebangs: To help keep your hair in the best possible shape, Olaplex recently came out with a brand new line of At Home Treatments: (a Shampoo and Conditioner, Bond Smoother and Oil: No 4,5,6,7) - it's pretty amazing stuff. Check it out here: http://olaplex.com?aff=1753

Kim Howard: for all the pros on here saying "just go to a salon, don't risk it, etc..." Sounds like sound advice, if only it was more affordable to have the luxury to do so on the regular. It's literally why these videos exist.

CardinalsGirl4: I’ve often wondered if I could pull off doing my balayage maintenance at home to save the expense of the salon. This video made me realize that no, I most certainly cannot. Will gladly keep giving my hair stylist my money because you guys are wizards

Simone T: I can't thank you enough Sylvia , After my hairdresser went on leave and another girl over bleached my foiled hair so badly I honestly thought my hair would never recover...but 6 months later no trip to the salon I've been re touching my hair with your steps of baby lights and hand painting. My hair is so happy . Thank you from the bottom of my heart xx

Kayla R. Lyons: it’s now april 10th 2020 and I’m watching this from quarantine. thank you for this gold mine of information! i’m buying my supplies online now lol.

we Family: Absolutely love this tutorial, and have been using this technique at home the last year and a half with amazing results! My hair is much healthier now that I'm only doing this 3x a year and it's the longest its been in a decade due to the lack of breakage from not bleaching it constantly! Thanks for this video! ❤

Jade Eden: Can't wait to watch this! I used your babylights tutorial and mixed it with what I've learned through other stylists on YouTube and Instagram videos (and filmed a video that I still haven't posted) and it went really well! Maybe I'll try this next! :)

xmichellexnicolex: Thank you thank you thank you for making this!!!!!!! I have never gotten my hair to lift to where I needed it to be or get the tone I wanted, but now it’s perfect!!!!!! My banding is gone and so is a majority of the warmth I had. I’m so happy! Thank you!!

Ivy Blu: You're the best! Thanks to your tutorials my hair is blonde & healthy & looking like it was done by a pro!

Toni Kirbas: WOW! this is amazing! I love your hair. You made it look so easy and flawless! Id never attempt this at home but thank you for showing us how to do this!!

Brookesobasic: Finally a local stylist. I hate finding someone I love and realizing I’d never even have the chance to get colored by them. But you.. you’re right here

Jennifer Pettus: Every one of her technique videos are laden with comments from "professionals" chastising and demeaning anyone who says they will try this in just the most inappropriate way. The insecurity has a toxic air, but completely fails to realise that there armys of single moms, small town girls without a decent salon, working through college etc all willing to take a chance vs doing without, they have every right, it's their own hair, they arent liable to anyone else, and many of them do a good job, al learn from it regardless. One day they will have the money to spend, and will find the right stylist for them, dont hate and it may be you. Personally I got tired of crying over a $300 bad color, cut and style, so as I learned I laughed at myself instead. My hair now has never been healthier, and I have never been happier, we weren't all meant to be your clients, don't feel bad, I do my own mechanics too because women are beasts!!!

Gabrielle Merl: Learned it all from you girl! Thank you for these!!!

Spilulu Lily: Girl you make it look easy but it’s not. You’re just talented. Thank you for trying to help us sad little balayage fiends

Kayleigh Mills: I'm a hair stylist of 12yrs & am about to use this technique on myself! I was also trained by Redken & use their products as well; this is for sure the easiest technique to do a DIY baylayage! You go girl! Deffo a helpful video! Thanks fellow stylist,

Sharon ODonley: Thank you for your tutorials! I have been binging for the past few days lol. After going to three hairdressers that can’t seem to cut my hair to the very basic cut I show pictures of, I’m going to do it myself. Thanks for all the tips. It has nothing to do with the amount of money,it has to do with someone listening to what I want!!

Jessica Jane: Hi Elle Happy first day of fall! I’m just inspired by your videos, and been watching a few now! New subscriber and follower on Instagram. I’m actually motivated to do my own hair, as I’ve been thinking about this for a few months now. I did read your description so I understand that this formula may not work for me. I’m still interested in trying. At 5:01, I want to ask...are we mixing all 3 products into the same bowl? Because a little after I notice you’re holding up 2 bowls. This step is so important for me to understand! I notice when you’re ready for the ALL OVER toner, that all is mixed in one bowl.

Lucas Montenegro: Beautiful work! So original from you to do your own hair, and the blonde suits you so perfectly!

Simple Beautiful You: Omg I just attempted this for my own hair because I'm just done going to the salon. And this was sooooo hard BUT I was able to manage. And it came out pretty decent for the first time ever doing touch up or highlights

Bilee Sterling-Barto: Love your videos Sylvia! and congratulations on your new baby girl!

Gayane Khachaturyan: Looks so easy to do it by yourself, but I know that it's hard... Want to take a risk and to do a touch up on my roots by myself. Thanks for sharing with us. You help us to find a right and easy way to do.♥️

EvieOhNooo!: I just did a platinum card technique on my own head, this video was so helpful for future applications!

Lpg 8: I wish I had the patience to do my hair the way you do, looks great

Katharine Kolb: Thank you so much for your tutorials. I have a darker base like yours and did the baby lights and root tap myself and it turned out really good for my first try! I’ve gotten several compliments. I’m really enjoying learning to do my hair myself. One question I have is, you showed 2 bowls when applying the root tap, did you mix the 2 colors separately? I used the formula in your baby light video but I’m curious about mixing the ones you showed here. Thanks again!

Ashley Cosgrove: Saved me so so so much money! Thank you for giving me the confidence to do this! turned out better than the Salon… crazy

Donna: Thank you for all your wonderful tips and tutorials I've learnt so much ❤

Nilzaneva: You are simply the best on youtube, sharing all this knowledge. Thanks to your tutorials I have been able to maintain my hair at home and usually asked where I get my hair done and getting compliments. Thank you

Butterflywingz: Wow! You are really good! I have watched so many tutorials on easier ways to do my own hair. By far, your's was so much more helpful. I've always done my own hair ( I did go to cosmetology school) and I'm a fellow Blondie. Thank you for simplifying this difficult task.

Lisa Lowe-Heslep: You did so well in this video. Products and visuals, thank you!

Anett: Love the video. Question: Would you put the lightner and root tap over grey hair around the face. Also, would you use the 07NN instead of 07N for better grey coverage? I def will do this on my own hair next week!

Kathy Gonzalez: Since you’re already blond at your tips.. would u have started on the bottom if you were dark all over?... I Starting from scratch!!!! I have about a level 3/4 all over ... n I’m going to do my own balayage (well attempt) and I loooooooooove your videos! But I wanna know if I should start from the bottom and work my way up?....

B Perez: Your hair looks stunning here. Dark natural root Bright throughout, not too ashy. Mostly bright and glossy

Tracey Lynn: Just amazing! You make it look so easy doing it on yourself

Jana: That's what I want a long time. It is absolutelly perfect. I try it tomorrow. Thank You! ♥️

Candy Olvaney: I have highlighted my hair for years using the "cap". Have wanted to balayage myself and found your video extremely helpful. Regarding the root application: did you have 2 bowls of solution for that process? I couldn't tell from the angle. Thanks!

Amanda Rian: Tried this on my mom and it turned out perfect! Thank you!

Stephanie Osborne: I love your videos! Thank you for sharing girl!

Jowita: Thank you so much for this!! You're amazing!

Sabrina Stovall: Such a great video! I will have to follow at home’ thanks for sharing ❤️

Madicyn Marinaro: I’m soooo glad you filmed this video. Now I know I CAN’T do this at home. Lol

: This would take me forever to finish but the results are well worth it

Ania: Love the video! The results are stunning!! how long do you process the root tap toner for?✨☀️

Jewel Potter: Have watched you for a long time, I'm a stylist and also do my own hair. Thank you for sharing, but the hardest thing for me is teasing the hair and getting the teasing out.

Teresa Marques: After spending 1 year cutting my own hair, what i can do reasonably well by now, and after watching a ton of your Videos just made my order online of a bleaching powder, developer and shades eq to tone my balayage/ highlight attempt. Now all i have to do is wait for it to get delivered and give it a go!

Julia Shalom Jordan: Oh my gosh. Watching you do the back of your hair just by the 'feel' of painting it...showed what a MASTER you are. I need to come to San Fran . to see you.:)

Laura Costello: Hi Sylvia, really great tutorial but just wondering how you do the back and underneath sections of hair? do you do these in the same method but with a different level of developer?

Gig Life With Lexi: You are amazing! How you can do the back of your head is beyond me! Absolutely lovely!!

Emily Roeder: this looks so good! i’m going to learn this and try it on myself

Abbey Johnson: 1. You are GORGEOUS 2. Love your videos; straight to the point & not annoying like most tutorials lol 3. I’m a 5 year licensed cosmetologist & even this is hard for me! Don’t want to be annoying but my hair is SO THICK & LONG this shit takes me foreverrrrr wish I lived closer to you! Thanks for the helpful video xxxx

Bec Ashley: Your videos have helped me so much. I am unable to go to a hairdresser to have my hair coloured as sitting at the shampoo bowls can be quite damaging to my neck (I have EDS, my joints dislocate and partially dislocate v easily). But I love being creative with hair colour and thanks to people like yourself, Ive learnt how to do it myself. Been doing it for about past 30 years, luckily have never ruined my hair doing it myself. Although sometimes my colour choices have been questionable! Thankyou for teaching us, and being respectful about it! I'd love to be able to have a professional do my hair, while I sip tea and gossip with the hairdresser! But unfortunatly its not something I can do. Your hair always looks great. Edit: dodgey spelling!

MsDelgada: Advice needed :) What would you recommend to someone with fine hair, with highlights who is starting to get first gray strands? How to maitain that baleyage/babylights look at home & deal with gray hair at the same time?

Joan Gentile: I love your hair, Elle!! It's beautiful!! ❤

isabella martinez: This is saving me so much money, and now I can control how I want it. Thank you!!

Irrri Descence: Goodness this is a treasure trove of a video for diy. Going to try this!! Thank you so much

Lara I am: This video helped me correct an unsuccessful discoloration in my hair . congratulations on the channel is wonderful and helps a lot. I'm from Brazil and I love your videos

Julia Horie: Wow, thanks for posting professional tips. Very informative.

Helena Neto: Lindo seu cabelo parabéns!

Deliana Martin: THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT WE ALL WERE LOKING FOR! THANKKK YOUU SO MUCH! ♥️

marissa amaya: I love your videos and I’m learning so much on how to do my hair. Thank you so much for your tips and everything you do . What color do you use for your base color .

tami harwood: Oh my gosh thank you so much for making this video! I am a licensed hairdresser of over 10 years and I am super picky about my hair. I have tried to have others get me to the blonde that I want and nobody has able to do that for me. I’m going to Cosmoprof tomorrow and purchasing theLeitner and toner that was recommended. And will be doing my own hair for now on

Jamie Johnson: Gorgeous! And you make it look so easy lol! Quick question...Can you apply permanent color in the shades you mentioned, like I usually use 10A and 9N for all over color, but I really love the way yours look with just the toner. I tone my hair after bleaching and coloring, but I just wanted to know if it is safe to use color after highlighting, or do I need to just be toning? Ahh, being a blonde is so frustrating some times, but it's totally worth it in the end! Thx for sharing! Your hair is my dream color, cut, and style! xoxoJJ

Lynn Rose: Your hair looks fabulous! xo

Cara Hockersmith Arauz: To #ElleBangs, this video is amazing!!! I ordered all of these products a couple of months ago and have been scared to try this... but, I literally just got done doing this and my hair turned out so perfect! It’s not as light as yours, but that is because I wanted to keep it a bit more natural. I would say if someone has never done anything with their hair, go watch pros do it first in person. I used to bleach all of my hair for years but was not brave enough to try hightlights because it takes skill. But, ElleBangs, you are an awesome teacher and again, thank you so much!!! I love my hair!

Виктория Кузнецова: Очень круто!! Умничка

Candy Olvaney: Great instructional video! I have a question about the root process. Did you have 2 mixing bowls for two different products? One for the 07N and 09NA ? mixed together with processing solution? Thanks!

Kelly T: My daughter and I tried to do this on a couple of sample pieces of her hair (we cut her hair so we could try it first). We followed your instruction from the video but the pieces of hair have a greenish tone to them after we toned the hair. Any suggestions? Should we use a different toner? Should we do something to correct the green after toning? Since we haven’t done this on her actual hair, we can try something else on the cut pieces if you can help us. THANKS! We love your videos!!

s mmg: I love these type of videos!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Eve B.: Can you make a video on how you do the rest of your hair like the lower sides and lower back?

Daisy Dabu: Wow, you are gorgeous and artistic. Got an idea how to do my own. Thanks

Angela: Looks great Thanks for sharing

Guille: I'm still trying to finish the very first bottle of Olaplex (got it cause your recommended it and what a life saver for the daring and DIY girl, like myself). The Redken kit is easier to use. I only used it once (because I had to try it). Can't wait to finish it so I can see how the Redken bonder works over time.

Happyclassygirly: Thanks really helpful video, your hair came out awesome

Backwood Barly: You know she’s a pro when she doesn’t even use clips to section her hair off

: This would take me forever to finish although the results are well worth it

DianaY A.B.: Was waiting for this video for forever☺️ thank you for posting this!!!

Joan Gentile: You make it look so easy, Sylvia. However, I would never try this myself. I'm afraid that I would screw it up! Lol. How do you do the back?? That would be my problem. Lol. That's why I have had my highlights done by a professional. They know what they are doing. I don't. Lol. ❤

Shirley Johnson: I did this with the same colors but with Age Beautiful high lift bleach and 20 vol (I already had on hand). I love it!!!! Turned out awesome. I had a small issue with the back not getting enough time but with toner it looked great. I’ve never used foils and wound up with a more noticeable line at roots but I’m the only one who sees it. Need help next time to cover grays. My hair is slightly darker than yours maybe? I do have many more grays. I’m 52. How can I get those covered?

Balanced Human: Thank you so much for this!

Alexandra Kotulák: I would love to do this but my hair is extremely long under my hips... Do you know any way to do it at home? Thank you for the video I love it

GlamMH: Love this video! I’m going to try it at home but for the all over toner I want that ash blonde. What toner do you recommend?

Danielle Donnelly: Looks absolutely beautiful ❤️❤️❤️ fellow hairstylist

Busy Getting Rich: Love this video! Thank youuu

West & Atlas: Hey I love this video and appreciate that you put these out for everyone. Do you know how I can buy the products you used in Canada? Thanks

Crystal Rainville: Thank you or this! I did have some questions about the teasing technique and you answered them <3

Melissa Bruce-Rodriguez: Hi. I've followed you for years. Huge fan! Here in VT, no one knows how to do blondes. I am purchasing the products right now. Question: I'm not a hairdresser but taught myself to cut and color others with great success and you tube. Is there a way to slow down what you are doing? I got lost with the first foiling, underneath, you grab some then hair after. TIA!!

Brandy Warren: @ellebangs I’m a stylist as well, LOVE shades eq! Any tips for foils bleeding? Always happens to me! Hard to avoid! I see you had one bleed but the root tap took it out!

andreeac: I usually never comment but I have to for this one. A week ago I went to the salon and they completely botched my balayage… I went in again (because I complained) for a complimentary re-do and it still looked so bad! So much banding and ORANGE at the roots, yuck! I came across this video and bought everything you mentioned. Honestly, after the bleaching i was a bit horrified… still some orange bits.. but I persisted with the Shades EQ and it came out SO well in the end I’m so happy with it. You are amazing. Thank you for saving my hair and saving me ££!!

Amanda SusAnne: You are beautiful, inside and out! Thank you for your videos, they have saved me many times!

Fashionwork12: this is a great way to get yourself involved in a serious color correction

Jana: This is so helpful!

BRITTANY POWLES: I love your videos. You are saving my life with these.

Stacey Billington: Looks beautiful! Quick question, Does all the teasing break the hair? I was uncomfortable with my stylist who teased each piece so much! And honest,y the color was not bright enough and I barely noticed a difference in color change

lily1125: Watching this now to retouch my hair. Here’s to quarantine highlights lol

hedkandigirl02: Hi elle, can the olaplex 1 & 2 be added during this process to help the hair?

Iris M: Wow looks super awesome, I bet it must be hard to do your own hair.

Gina b Monat: Do you ever feel processing solution lifts just a tad? I have a lot of my natural (dark blonde) color throughout and also my roots and anytime I’ve used processing with a toner instead of the gloss I felt it lifted my darker areas a tad and made them slightly gold. I don’t feel using clear with the toners is doing a good enough job toning though. Any suggestions?? Am I imagining things?

Samantha Matsuura: as a professional. I have been doing my own hair for years too.. I have been looking for new tips on how to do my back better... why I didn't pull it forward before is beyond me hahaha.. always dropping lightener drying to balayage upwards. silly me.

hotl1kefire: So gorgeous!

Meagan Marie: Can you do this same technique with out doing a root tap or smudge? If you tease all the babylights/highlights it should look soft correct?

Megan: This is too good! I was watching your old ones and about to do it.
