Cutting The Roots Or Returns From Your Human Hair Wig

A hand knotting or hand tied wig will require the roots or returns to be removed before the first use of your human hair wig.

The cuticle on the hair in the human hair wig will rub on the fold over that is created by the knotting process.

This fold over will then rub against the hair shaft and cause a natural backcombing effect which will cause the wig to tangle and matte up at the base of your lace foundation.

This in turn will cause problems when styling the wig and prevent the hair from laying correctly on your human hair wig.

There are some exceptions to the removal of the root but in general it is always advised to de-root the fold over to prevent problems further down the line.

The exceptions would be that if a backcomb at the base of the lace foundation would help with your desired style. Examples would be drag wigs or 1960s beehive styles where backcombed roots would assist in the final style.

This video shows how to de-root your human hair wig.

Hi guys and welcome to the WAM studio channel in today's video. I want to talk about D routing at your hand-knotted wig or cutting the returns out of your hand, tied wig. Now. The reason why we cut the returns or the roots out is to allow the hair to fall in its correct position on your wig. It also prevents the cuticle of the little folded over hair tips from rubbing against the hair shaft of your wig and creating a bit of a massive backcomb. Now there are some instances where the route is a good idea to leave into your wig, and that depends on the Finnish style or the use of the wig. So if you were doing a 1960s beehive for example, or maybe a greatly dragged wig having that natural backcomb at the root is really going to aid you in dressing and styling that week so grab yourself a tail comb and a pair of sharp scissors. And this is how you do it. Oh, so thanks for watching, please give my video a little like feel free to share with your friends and subscribe to my channel, and I welcome any tips and suggestions in the box below so until next time. You

Will Campbell: Thank you so, so much for showing this. You are an actual superstar! Being still relatively new to all of this, I often wondered what happens with these 'Returns'. I didn't even know what they were called up until now. Plus, it just so happens I have almost the exact comb you used in this video. Your advice and tips are absolutely invaluable. Thanks again

lizad777: If someone is going to wear the wig on a daily basis, do you think cutting the returns is still a good idea as in will it shorten the longevity of the knots? Thanks

Will Campbell: How short does the returns need to be cut? Also, does the same rule apply when a wig is ventilated with synthetic hair?

Shea LaRoux: Seems like it would make them stand straight up. Even longer returns stand out from the rest of the hair and are often a frustrating endeavor to get them to lay down.

NorthTexas RedHead: Thank you!

WAM Studio: Hey Ashley I cut them to about 1cm

shell ski: im going to be making myself a human hair full lace wig, if i buy the hair on wefts and just cut the hair from that instead of undoing threads to release the full length will that eliminate the "backcombing effect" id have with the returns? i want sleek look. or does the return regardless rub against even if the root is removed.

Fina Khan: This took me back to my wig making days.this step is not in most wig makers toolbox, I was trained in Bristol with Peter Owen in the 90s and all the steps you used in creating a wig is what he taught me. I was there for 5 months training on all aspects, from curling hair by boiling, colouring, etc, it was a great experience. I switched from being a head of department in theatre and Ballet to Film where my skills in period hairstyling and wig styling was lacking, my training made me a sort after stylist, as Salon hairdressers have no clue about creative hairstyling, period work nor wig styling and maintenance. I now teach all the skills they need to work successfully in Film, and I continue to work partime in film. Thanks for sharing.
