Hi friends, Andrew Carruthers, here education, director for Sambia, both in the salon and from our guests. A common question is: why aren't my curls holding we go through the process to teach our guests how to do a great curl on their hair or maybe we're doing a curl in someone's hair and it's just not holding so we're gon na give you four reasons Why those curls might not be holding so first things? First, it's all about product right. What we set up in the hair is so essential when we want that all night hold when it comes to curl. You know most of the time we're also referring to especially your finer softer haired clients when we're thinking of guests that don't have the ability to hold that curl for a long time. So with those textures, especially, we want to stay away from products that have too much oil or silicone, so even in the shampoo balm think about volumizing and thickening products that have a little drier touch to them. You know you might even skip that last conditioner or just do a very quick rinse at the very end, just to shut down the cuticle coming back to the chair again, we want to stay away from anything that has too much softening power to it. So on this particular occasion, maybe it's staying away from leave-in conditioners and just going straight in with volumizing products, especially if you have a guest that has especially fine hair, we highly recommend doing a massive dose of redkin guts. Ten, you know a lot of times when we're working behind the scenes at a photo shoot. What we do is we soak the hair with this and, when I say, soak the hair, I'm talking, starting from barely damp to even dry, hair and soaking, the hair with guts, ten and then re blow-drying, so great product. For that also, once the hair is dry, keeping away from anything, that's going to add too much product D feel to it, of course, no waxes oils silicones anything of that sort and then coming in with a product. That'S really specifically designed for putting heat on the hair. You know some lighter dryer hairsprays might be good, but something like this - the iron shape 11 from Red Ken's gon na be another great product to put in that's still gon na give the hair some hold, but also some heat protection. But it's not gon na leave. The hair feeling heavy weighted down or to product II so be cautious with that product solution. Oh, the second thing is the setup of the hair even down to the blow-dry itself, so on our beautiful Chris or be mannequin head here we did two different types of blow dries on our left side, where it's very, very polished and very smooth. We used our Signature Series 9 row finishing rush now. This is gon na, add a lot of tension and it's gon na stretch the hair fiber. So it's gon na get a lot of polish to the hair. On this side, we did a similar process, but we just did it with our Signature Series paddle brush, which doesn't actually create as much tension, and you can see that it's not as finished it's not as refined. Sometimes we overwork that first blow-dry that first set up process and what happens is on this side, because it's so overly polished and overly stretched. It doesn't have the same bounce. So if you look, I took the exact same size section and I even counted to the second, the exact same amount of time on the iron and then I just let it drop so on this side. You know we do have some curl and these manikins actually take curl quite well, but in relation to the opposite side, you can see on the opposite side, especially up here. I have a little bit more bounce to it. I have a little more lift to it because I didn't over stretch the hair. So again, if you or your client is having challenges with their curl holding, you might want to check in on the prep process. If they've got really baby fine hair, maybe it's even just a rough dry, maybe there's no brushes going into it at all. Another possible reason that those curls aren't holding is your guests. Hair is too healthy and it's horrible to say that. But you know in certain cases it's great to have a little bit damaged to the hair and it does help a lot of times with curl. Holding now we're not adjusting that you intentionally damage your guests hair, but it's taking notice that if you have someone that has super silky super soft hair sit in your chair. It'S probably going to take a lot to get that curl to stay now. We do have one solution in particular, and it's this: it's our Sam via texture iron and if you look into the plate, so you can see, there's these little ridges in there and those ridges what they do is they help to expand the shape of the cuticle And it kind of fluffs up that cuticle. It actually changes the texture of the hair a bit so that that soft silky fine hair gets disrupted. Now what I've done is on this side. I'Ve taken a section and I've pre textured it now. This section right here is exactly the same size as this section. I think you can already see how much more fullness it has to it. That'S important now when we come in with our iron and we curl over top of that texture, we get something really incredible. We get the ability to have a lot more body and a lot more hold. Now, I'm gon na take our Zambia Artist Series curling iron. Wait. We have a curling iron. It'S coming soon guys keep your eye out. We'Re gon na go in and we're gon na. Just do a simple curl now the spoons kind of get in my way, so I'm just gon na pop it off uh-oh, Marcel and a wand and one it's coming guys. Don'T worry all right! So now that is you with the new product? Let'S get back to work so we're just gon na hold and wrap. Let me just wrap. I'Ve got that nice extra long barrel on there, for you guys and we'll hold now as we're holding to make sure we get to the proper temple. Just take our finger and we'll keep touching on the hair and we'll just make sure that we're getting enough heat through that hair, so that the outside is just as well heated as the inside and that feels really nice so that off we'll. Let that cool for just a moment, and now you can see side-by-side how much more fullness and body I have in the textured side, but more than anything, since what we're talking about is holding this will hold all night long. So in solutions where I do have someone that comes in with baby fine, very soft hair, if I do this texture set first and you can be as heavy-handed or as light handed as you want, depending on how much texture you want to see, but this will Hold for a very, very, very long time in comparison to non textured hair. So this is your solution if they have that baby, fine, really soft hair. So the fourth and final reason that your curls are probably not holding very well is exactly what I was just talking about and that's the cooling process. Now, I think most of you know that you're supposed to cool the curl, instead of just letting it drop or running your hands through it, while it's still hot, your guests might not know that so a good hot tip to give them now. For those of you that are having challenges with those fine soft textures, not holding curl, the other thing is: did you know that it can take up to 30 minutes for those buns to completely reform? So after we place heat on the hair, it can take up to 30 minutes of cooling for those bonds to fully form. So that's really important to know, because a quick cooling in the hand might not be sufficient. We need to get out our little clips and we need to roll that section up, put a clip in it and let it cool now, if you have the ability to pre curl a style and then let it sit in in that curled form for up to 30 minutes that's gon na give you the most longevity. We hope that those four quick tips really shape what you do behind the chair and give you better lasting curls any questions or comments. Please leave them in that little box below. We love to hear from you guys, thanks for watching I'm Andrew Carruthers education, director for Sambia

Ilka Ja: 1. silicon free and voluminizing products 2. rough dry just little brushing 3. you may have too healthy hair 4. pretexture your hair with a texture iron 5. Cool your curls for 30 min with clips

Renae Cotton: I have been a hairstylist since 1976. I did not know it took 30 minutes for the bonds to form a curl. Also your new products and texture iron are brilliant. I love your teaching videos and have learned many new techniques during COVID . Yes you can teach an old hairdresser new tricks. Wish I knew these techniques years ago when I was doing 10 blow drys a day! Thank You!!!!

Danielle Lynne: The moment you realize you curled your hair last night just to have it go right back to being straight in the morning ! Soooo helpful!

Kat Williams: I just had an "aha!" moment! About letting the curls cool for 30 minutes before manipulating your hair, I can relate. Whenever I use my hot rollers and just leave them on after they've cooled for 30 minutes or more, my curls stay longer than when I remove the hot curlers just minutes after they are no longer hot. Very excellent tip. Thanks VERY much!

Isabelle Voor: So basically......my hair wont curl because I take care of it too well Excellent

Micki H: That moment you realize you've been doing everything wrong

wendysaywhat: Thanks so much for these tips ! So helpful! I am going to be sharing these with my fellow coworkers too! :) You guys are always so great at making these tips so easy to follow and execute! Keep it coming !

Scarlet Nova: I love your videos! Thanks for sharing tips! I didn’t know about this brand when I was buying my curlier but now I need those combs and brushes... the techniques you show in your videos do help a lot with any tools you have by hand, it’s just important understanding the process! :)

v_k: Thank you for such amazing tips! Will wait for 30 minutes the next time I curl my hair! Glad to realise I have healthy hair

Jay Dubbs: Typically hair that is all one length is a little more difficult to curl being that it's all one length as opposed to layered hair which gives more lift because of the graduation of length to help separate and give more body to the hair. Also if hair is poker straight and fine that type of hair doesn't hold curl easily because there isn't any body or thickness to the hair for a curl to hold. I would suggest if you want lasting curls to do it the old fashioned way and either use pin curls, or rollers, and use a setting lotion or curl enhancing/thickening mousse, those two methods will give you a much nicer curl that lasts for days. A curling iron is more to touch up curls. :)

rachael lawson: This video is awesome! Super informative! I never realized that my products could be detrimental to the curling process! I always thought more product more curl! I also think I'm not letting the curls cool long enough! Thanks for the helpful info!

Mary Widener: This was very helpful. I struggle because I want my hair to be soft to the touch and nicely moisturizer but then it’s “too soft”. I’ll dry try some of these tricks though. Thank you!!

She Cooki: Finally a video talking about prepping the hair. Well explained. Thank you ❤️

Tamara Borchardt: OMG, no wonder my curls fall flat within an hour! Thank you for posting this video, it was Soooo helpful! Not only do I have fine, soft hair, it's very Healthy AND a quick review of my products revealed that they have silicone in them, plus I used a 2in1 leave-in conditioner. lesson learned! *Grateful*

megalopolis2015: Awesome tips. I have naturally curly, yet have many fine hairs, mixed with a growing population of silver, and have a fun time of trying to style curls for long periods of time. I think I will also try the Redken 11 heat spray. I'll tell you what, I'd love to have a styling head like that. That would be quite a hoot, both for styling fun and Halloween antics. :0)

Kayla Buckner: I'm not a stylist but I Love watching y'all's videos. I've learned so much from you guys.

Leelee bell: what about hair that is so straight and thick and heavy it does not keep a curl.. not even for 30 mins

PJM PJM: Thanks so much.  I perm my hair because without the perm it is always 'too healthy' and the curling iron will not even curl it. I also learned that I'm styling too smooth when blow drying. Very educational! Great videos...and much appreciated.

Miyakies: Weird is though that I usually curl my hair with a straightener (it’s a good high quality one but it’s pretty old, works perfectly still though!) and my curls last all day. I have very fine hair, nordic hair. So a lot of hair but thin. It curls very easily but recently I bought a curling iron, and with that one my curls barely last an hour. Is it only because the curler is low quality or could it be I don’t have it hot enough? How hot is too hot?

n: I have find my texture iron! Love the tips and they really pushed those products lol. Yes you have to have the right product. If you brush curl the hair. Curls will last longer and cool air on the curl does helps and pin curls still work wonders

Kenya Mitchell: Very very informative!!! I always wondered why I can’t never curl my hair using a curling iron.. great detail!

Joni Lynne: HUMIDITY at the equator is also a reason. Wish you'd mention products that would work great in humidity to keep hairdos in place, even good ol curls.

Jennifer Morris: I blow dry out my fine super curly hair, leave it for three days in a pulled back ponytail, then on the fourth day I use a straightening iron to curl it beachy wave style. This works well, and the curls hold, also only curl small pieces, not big pieces as the smaller ones heat thru and curl better. I let it all cool and just lightly finger out the curls. I also use a very sheer hair oil to keep the hair smooth and shiny. As the days go by the curls slowly drop and you get a nice shiny wave. It’s taken me ages to perfect this technique but it works.

Miney 04: When i was going to primary prom, my mum had tried to curl my hair (she used to be a hairdresser in London, and had her own shop), and with8n 10 minutes it wasn’t there anymore, highest heat and everything. Hopefully this works, as I LOVE curls, and it makes me look like I have just a lik bit more hair than I have

howtopasstime: Consider bleaching/lightening your hair a bit. Bleached hair often hold curls better and can sometimes make the texture even thicker. It will be just a little more damaged though so don’t curl it too much

WhirlwindT: My girlfriend struggles to keep a curl, and after tonnes of research I've bought her a European equivalent of a Curl Secret. Loads of people on reddit and YT comments say they struggle with curls and this was their answer. BUT GET IT ON PROMOTION! It's expensive (but still less than GHD products).

LaBelles Professional Hair & Beauty Service: Great video. Lasting curl is always a big issue when I'm creating hair up and partial hair up style for my guests

Barbara Danley: I have exactly this kind of hair-thick, fine, silky, long. I knew some of this but the video was really helpful anyway. Thanks!

M A: thank you so much for these tips. I actually have been using some heat protectant products with a lot of silicone and silk complex in them. that is most likely why my curls wont hold. I also have been using a deep hydrating conditioner and "moisture rich" shampoo and conditioner.

Donna: Okay folks, I’m going to use the correct brush (paddle) Use the two Redkin products Skip the conditioner Rinse in cool water Use no softening products Cool the curl & clip ‘em And (Don’t think my hair is too healthy, hah). If this produces an all day curl I’ll let you know! I’m on this! Signed, fine, thin hair If this doesn’t work - I’ll take a nap cuz this took awhile! 8/31/18

8Stalemeat: A TEXTURE IRON!! I think this is what Southeast Asians like myself need! I have super straight heavy hair that I just can't curl. Gotta prep, dry shampoo, curl, set, spray oh lord the effort.. And it still unravels through the night unless you want crispy hair.

Denise Duran-McVeigh: Andrew is such a great trainer/presenter. I always look for his presentations. Great video!

The Unofficial Historian: I tried to do heatless curls for the first time last night by splitting my pony tail into twists and pinning them down before I went to bed but I don't know if I just brushed them out too much when I did my hair today, or if I just didn't do it properly in the first place, but all the pretty curls just seemed to fall out in a couple of hours. Do you think these tips would still help in the case of heatless curls (apart from cooling the curls properly)? Does Argon and Coconut oil count as oils to avoid? My hair is fairly stright and I'm told it's on the thick and heavy side as well.

Darth Accountant: I think this might be the video that saves me from going insane when my curls are pretty much no more than kinks after 30 mins

Grace Salas: Everything you said is literally my hair. Thanks for the video!

twominutetips: Please do a video on curling for gray hair. As you must know there is almost nothing for this huge and growing demographic where women are embracing their gray hair. But they need help with styling in a way that doesn't yellow the hair. Thank you.

Autumn: Use a heat protectant spray with hold that is also humidity resistant, I use kenra 19 and it's a lifesaver for straightening and curling. My hair is already wavy/curly but when I brush it out to curl it nicely it never stayed either without product. If all else fails do a wet set with rollers using mousse or gel, wet to dry styling will always hold 10x better because you are altering the hydrogen bonds. Hairspray is a finishing touch and isn't going to hold a style alone, especially in humidity, unless you use an entire can for helmet head lol. (Never ever use heat on top of hairspray unless you want fried hair, the can says flammable for a reason)

Sue K: Super informative- thank you!

Lee-Anne Duffy: I have very soft and shiny hair. I always want to curl my hair, but whenever I do it never stays! I literally got a blow dry yesterday and it was gone within 2 hours ‍♀️

ondadentro: SO educational! Thank you so much

followurheart11: I’ve not ever had this issue till recently, soooo frustrating but now i know why!!!!!! The leave ins and other product i started using for smooth, silicone ( i had a feeling!!!)etc. Yay thanku.

Ashlea Paige: The REAL reason! your hair is to healthy! Yes! I love the honesty in this video. It's annoying when people are just like just use this product.. or this.. to make your curls.

Jennifer Borthwick: That was awesome!!! I may share this with my clients, especially the ones that want their hair done in 2.5 seconds!!!

Kara Rebello: Very helpful!  Thank you!

J RR: I was at ny hairdressers yesterday and she told me my hair was "too healthy" to keep a curl for long. Disappointing but flattering, I guess?

Sigrid Finch: I pre treat my hair the night before shampooing so i don't use conditioner after I wash my hair. I get more texture and volume that way but avoid damage when I use heat in styling because of the pre treatment.

Bay Areaus Aquarius: I have issues finding a clip that won't leave crimps in finer hair types. I'd love to what you use for holding curls on your models for shoots. This vid really helped me understand the curl needs to cool much longer than I had imagined to become" architecturally sound" lol. My Hair Science IQ just went up...a measurement of 30 minutes to restucture of the bonds had to be gaged by a lab somewhere...which is kinda nuts but awesome at the same time. Now I have the molecular recipe for good hair.

H Luna: cant wait to try these tips! sharing with all my fine haired friends!

Tanisha Velasquez: This is a great video. How do you set up hair or/and blow dry hair that is very curly to achieve a curl with a curling iron?

Maddison Ebers: This video is everything I was looking for, thank you so much.

Dioselle Manaloto: hi, from Philippines i'm new to your channel and this video is a really great help, Thanks for sharing. I just want to ask, what if we don't have that kind of iron ? what technique can we do to give texture on the hair by just using ordinary hair iron?

Paula McGarghan Peter: That WAS REALLY HELPFUL! GOD BLESS YOU

Barbara Osoria: Wow!!! I just ran across you and subscribed right away!! My hair is babyfine thin. It holds nothing. I have to wash with volumizing. Then apply root boost, then maximizing and thickening mousse, then blow dry only with my hands (upside down)n then come back and add texture spray, then curl and lightly misting with hairspray as I curl. Ughhh so frustrating but I can't change it. This video was super helpful! Thanks for the tips!!

maria doherty: Omg thank you! I was.doing a bridal trial and she said the curls dropped. But she has really soft hair. So healthy. Ni mattet.how much hairspray i put in it! So this really helps me i will try the texturing tongs. X

Booskie Wanders: My hair is naturally curl/wavy and has plenty of body. My hair looks nice when I wash it, brush it then let it loose, nice wet curl look. But once it dries it is frizzy and curls/wavy is not so good. I had salons curl my hair and it does not hold even right after they do it. My hair is healthy though. Maybe I should just keep trying different stuff until I find what works for me.

NT: holy crap this video was so freaking informative my whole life has been a lie! LOL my hair has been too healthy!!!

Winterheart00: Great information and video! Thank you!!

Isabelle G: Great tutorial! Could you also recommend some alternative hair products (cruelty free/vegan)? Thanks!

Kowen 3415: Thank you so much for the tips! Definitely will try that cooling method

Tashawnda Price: Less than two minutes in, you addressed my problem - too much leave in conditioner.

comet969: Ty I have very healthy super fine thin hair I have to get perms twice back in the day and they still let go to quick but trying to curl my hair I have to freeze spray it and look like a product no no to get it to stay for a few hours. Gonna try the pre texture thing I think that’s a great to try I’ve grown to accept my poker straight hair that everyone loves but some times I’d like to have something different and pretty. I know this is an old video but had to comment ty

WoWFunnyVideos: Great information! Thanks for sharing!

Shashalynn31: I naturally have wonderful volume. My hair will stay straight after using a flat iron literally until I wash it again. however, my hair will not hold curl unless I wash it, apply gel, let it dry naturally, then wait a day and curl it. I use a good quality heat protectant spray, and a decent hair spray, I let the curls cool. -I have to leave the curls in ringlets though, because if I finger comb through them, it's all over before I can get one good selfie in. :(

S L: This is a great video, thanks so much!

Brooke Doering: this was so helpful!! thank you

Melisa Buken: Hahah I used to put a lot of oils for my hair so it wouldn’t get damaged while curling. Thank you so much!!!

Meichelle Spirit: Just curious... Wouldnt all of this hurt the hair over time????

08emily89: I have tried EVERYTHING apart from crimping the hair first to give it texture. My hair is too smooth straight and soft. I have bleach balayage so it’s not too healthy. I’m just curly-challenged

Mikayla Campinos: I curl my hair perfectly, add hairspray, and it still doesn’t hold! It’s so annoying!

Rose P: I have a genuine question: we always talk about using products for our purpose, but we use so much product. Isn't that damaging to your hair over time? I rarely use product, because I don't own that many, but even the ones I do own, I feel like it would damage my hair. So, do all these hair products damage hair?

Mistress Joia Von Floofington: For fine fair, that doesn't style easily, thermal spray with dry shampoo works the best. I've heard this from many stylists. No need for so much product.

Ellen Beauty Joy: awesome!! I have super fine long hair an I had to learn to figure out what works for my hair to hold a curl and I learn something new the pre-texturizing tool is awesome!!

Jessica Luna: I love this vidoe!!! one I want that curling iron I really hope it is out! Two I need to invest in a texture/crimper cause my hair is naturally stick straight, but it's long. I use to curl put product ie styling, gel spray, use rods, heat no heat everything. My hair holds over night curls well and lasts days but sleeping in perm rods is no fun. Hopefully this will work

Guinevere Skylark: I wish my hair would hold a curl. Its too healthy and thick, they just fall right out in about half an hour. No matter what tricks I try. It holds a crimp really well though, but curling the crimped hair does not make it last any longer for me.

Sharon Wilgenburg: I have super thick wavy hair and curls have tended to fall out. The next day, my hair looks as though I've done nothing.

Phyllis Prebble: The front part of my hair used to be very naturally curly. I spent yeas getting it straightened. Now it is absolutely bone straight. I am 75 years of age and now wish I had my curly hair back. What can I do to get it to hold a curl? My family says I have (had) halfway hair, half black/half white. I think they classify it as 2b these days.

Koleta Gabrysiak: Thank You so much for this! :)

Alithea Navite: I overstretch my hair. It never seems to be tangle free, but it’s shiny!

mama of three: Are there any good quality hair product like the ones you mentioned but that are cheaper and maybe found in a more common store?

Amanda Wall: Ok, I bought the texturizing iron, both hair products, and used the paddle brush. I also let the curls cool for thirty minutes. I did everything you stated in the video and my curls fell out within a half hour! I don’t understand. I do have fine hair but it’s not super fine. I will try again and see if the same thing occurs. If it does I will feel very jipped on spending so much money on the necessities and will return them all if I even can.

Stevie Wanders: I didn't realize the fact that I have super healthy hair could be my issue with never getting curls to stay.

sharon kilday: That was great information! Thanks Andrew!

Sophia Onus: Wow. The last tip was amazing... 30 mins to set

Ash Akim: Hey Anthony, I have a client that has overly damaged hair and doesn't hold at all. Any tips?

Kiki: Andrew, LOVE YOU & SAM'S "Tutorials"!!! I am Always "inspired" by them !!!

Keith Howard: Thank You Andrew . I am learning something every time .

1slandgirl Caribbean: Thanks for the tips. I've been using way too much silicone and leave in conditioner. Gonna look for those hair spray products, too.

CookieLover 796: This is great thank you!

Miia Diaz: I have thin pin straight hair. I dyed my hair for years and my hair was passed my butt. I stoped dying my hair and when my natural hair grew to my shoulder I cut all my hair that was dyed. So now my hair is it’s natural color and I only use hot tools maybe once even 6 months or so. So I guys it’s not that damaged. Any who, I will use curlers in my hair over night. I will take out the curls and 30 mins or less my hair will be lightly wavy and an hour later it’s straight. I don’t know how the heck that happens. To go from nice cute curls to straight hair just doesn’t make sense to me. I hope these techniques work for me. I’ll come back and leave a comment if it does.

Miraculous Lady: Lol Thank God for my thick, voluminous, full Afro-textured hair that God blessed me with. My Afro hair can actually hold styles AND hold beautiful curls effortlessly...

Morgan Miller: Thank you so much!! This saved me

Dauphne McMurry: Good tips. Thank you for sharing.

Xiomara Escobar: I knew it! Thank you for this

jessica ballard: i have baby fine hair and love the texture iron, but didnt know i could curl right over it!!!

Danielle James: Is this texturing before curling the hair , is it going to damage the hair?

rumba rumba: My mum used to wave her hair using kirby grips overnight it was always beautiful in the 80s

Lauren Ayala: I always love your videos!

Grace Mann: i think my hair is too healthy to hold curls. i’ve tried everything and they just don’t stay. i usually start with the bottom and by the time i’ve reached the top my curls at the bottom have fallen out lol

2008july4: My hair is too healthy, soft, shine , long , straight and therefore my curls aren't holding.(( and I never use any chemical color.

V Guzek: Are you selling your iron yet : ) It will be nice to use it for long hair!!! Thanks so much for the video. Learned so much!
