How To Add Darker Rooting And Lowlights To A Synthetic Wig- Root A Wig With Furniture Markers

CHECK OUT MY UPDATED VIDEO USING A COPIC MARKER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6_e_m...

I use furniture touch up markers to add lowlights and rooting to wigs that are a bit too light in color for me all the time. I have never had an issue with doing this nor have I ever had it damage a wig in any way.

It does wash out a little bit when you wash the wig, but not fully... so keep that in mind. These are the furniture markers I use: https://amzn.to/2SrLF1X

Hey everyone - alright, I'm here today to do a quick tutorial, I'd like to show you how I route a wig and add lowlights to a wig that I feel like is a little, maybe too light for me or doesn't have enough dimension in it, and so I Am a member of a number of Facebook groups for hair loss and weight wearers, and I get the question a lot because I'll share that I've routed my girl, mono and hot hazelnut mix. I'Ve also routed a couple of other wigs and they always want to know how I do it. So here's a quick video showing how I do it and showing the before and after because I just happen to have two girl mono was in the same color. So I am going to show you how hazelnut mix this is the one I wear all the time and she has got routing and lowlights added to her very subtly. And then this is the one that is brand new in the box and doesn't have any of that, so without really knowing you might not be able to tell too readily. This is a better view. You can see the one on the right has much darker colors and more dimension. So we'll talk a little bit about that. It'S subtle! It'S not significant! So anyway, this is lady latte by Belle tres in the color mocha with cream she's lovely. I love her. So much and I am actually in the process of doing multiple video reviews on her sorry, I hit the pause, real, quick. I got a tickle and I needed to drink water, so I'm in the process of doing multiple video reviews on her to just show you what HD what happens with heat defiant fibers, because this is my first HD and I've been really afraid of them. For so long I haven't purchased them and honestly bill Trust has some cute Styles, some really good colors and so does Raquel Welch for that matter, and it was a whole realm of wigs that were out of reach for me, if I wasn't going to wear HD, So I took the leap bought one from a wig sister and I'll share with you, my learnings, because if you're like me and are afraid to purchase HD wigs, if we can find a way to make them work for us, isn't it wonderful to have more choices? So that's why why I'm trying this one out so check out my youtube channel? I do have two videos on her so far and there be more. I will continue to share my journey until I feel like I've, given you guys enough information about the wear and tear on those wigs. So, let's start off with my girl ma know that I have rooted oh this cap, so different from the belt rest cap. It'S just amazing belt rest runs large, I think, and she's pretty roomy on me. I'Ve got an average circumference, but a very petite everything else and Ellen Villa runs a little small, and so it's amazing how much tighter this one is. So this is grille mono. She has been worn quite a bit so far. This is, I have a chocolate routed that I have worn nearly worn out, and this one has is not quite there yet. But I've worn her a lot, and so here she is - and I have done with the routing. So I'm going to show you what I do with the routing just so that you can get a sense of how I do it, and I will also link the furniture markers that I use it's a whole pack of them. I only have the two up here. Right now with packets downstairs, so I just got it from Amazon. I am using the black one, but they have a walnut. They have a chestnut, I think, or a cherry. They have a lot of different colors and the black isn't too dark, and so I just basically do that literally I just sort of paint on the hair fibers just like this. You can see the color going on and I just go. I'M looking behind right now. In the mirror I just kind of go or along wherever I think it needs some of that dimension and I literally just paint I try to avoid the cap and sometimes I'll go down into the fibers like this, and that's literally all there is to it, and It'S really a work in progress. I don't know that I'm ever fully done. Maybe I will be brooding and a little bit of it washes out when I wash it, it doesn't fully wash out. So it's not like you're suddenly going to have no routing. So if you, if you're, not sure if you'll like it, do it very little until you figure out what you want, because you're not gon na be able to get rid of it fully, but it does wash out a little bit so every time I wash I Do have to reroute her a little bit. This one is probably getting close to needing a wash she's. The curls are looking a little stringy and all of that, but so that's all there is to rooting awake so whew, I'm not sure. I'M gon na really get be able to give you a super good sense in the side-by-side here. But take a look at this one and you can see and then, if I do a quick change and put the one on that has no rooting yeah I mean I can see a huge difference. I imagine you can too just look how different that looks. Even on my complexion, it's just so light. It'S like a up really Auburn, really kind of a a fiery color, it's not like fire, it's like an orange, a fiery Auburn, and so when I first got girl mono. I didn't like this color at all. I am almost returned it. I actually got the RMA number and everything and almost returned it. I had met the first one I bought about from wig Studio One and they sent me the return authorization and for whatever reason I decided, I don't know, maybe I'll see what I can do, because I just love girl, mono and I wanted another color and that's When I routed it and it changed everything for me - I love this week now with the routing. I still don't really like this color, that much on me without the routing, but with those darker colors. It just completely changes how this wig looks on me so um. I just wan na encourage you guys again. I have said this in other videos. You know when you live with your bio hair. You had to do things to make it work whether it was because it was super thin or because you had scalp showing I mean. I know for me: I use topic powder. I use tons of hair thickener, thickening shampoo, styling techniques, headbands accessories, and you know I just spent thousands of dollars over the course of a you know a number of years trying to hide my hair. So you know, I think, having an expectation that wigs will require zero effort is probably not a realistic expectation. Obviously you can have whatever expectations you want to, but the price of those rigid expectations is that you might not get to enjoy wigs as much. You might not get to try different styles, so I just encourage you to keep watching videos. Keep looking for experienced, wig wearers to share their stories, share what they've tried, because I think it just opens up a whole world to you. I would have never discovered this color and how great it is had I not experimented with trying to modify it a little bit and I'm so glad I did so. Hopefully this was helpful to you. If you have questions again, I'm always happy to answer your questions, and I really am here just to walk alongside be honest journey with you. I mean we're doing this together in a lot of ways, and so, if you have tips tricks or if there's something, I'm doing that, you think I could be doing differently or better leave it in the comments I'm open to that feedback, I learned from everybody else And I just want to pass on a little bit of those learnings have a good day and thanks so much for watching.

Michelle Rizzitano: Recently found your channel and so thrilled I did! Even though I’ve worn wigs for a couple years, I lacked the confidence to alter them to make them my own. You have given me the boost I needed to give it a try! Thanks!

Chris Boyd: Thank you Denise, this is really helpful! I have just bought a red in 30/28/26. it doesn’t have enough dimension for me but I’m kind of afraid to use the darker colors on the rooting since this is a light red shade. Have you ever used them on that light of a color?

Maria Grazia Capitani: Tried the furniture pen method on my wig and worked like a charm!!! I covered the wide blonde streaks that I didn’t like and now it has warm brown shades all over, thanks Denise

Colleen Todd: Hi Denise! I always love your videos! I have tried rooting on my Wigs after I saw you do this, Thank you so very much! So I have tried using black sharpies and also had furniture polish pens on hand to use also if I want different colors. I love the way they all work. I have a question, have you ever tried fabric paint? I’m thinking of black fabric paint so that I can use it in the underneath layers the back the nape etc. and maybe it will go farther than my sharpies (that tend to dry out)?????

A Sou: Thank you so much for sharing this. I definitely will give this a try on a recent wig I received which I think will make a huge difference in how it looks.

Maria Grazia Capitani: Amazing idea! I have just received a Festa Deluxe by Ellen Wille colour Mocca lighted, the colour is overall lovely but I had not idea it has big lighted wide streaks on the front! I could try to tone them down a bit without running big risks

Rosalie Menzies: Great idea Denise and can't wait to try it! Have you figured out a way to do blonde HIGHlights?

Katherine Chatelain: Hi Girl This wig is really pretty on you! Thanks for sharing your info. So sweet, Sending love! Happy Mardi Gras!!!!!

Linda p.p.: Thank you thank you thank you. I tried this with a cheap Paula Young, who has NOT so many colors and not so good quality, but less hair for a cooler wig. It worked great. I love that wig on you!

Lori M: Wow! I’ve seen a lot of different ways to root a wig.. but this is what I’d feel comfortable trying! Thank you for sharing this!

Coast Daze: Yes, the difference was very obvious! Wow, I think think this is a better idea than using any type of power that could blow away or even fall in your face! And you can paint where you want the rooting.

Maria Barradas: Wow, that is a brilliant idea, love a few low lights and rooted wigs..thank you, thank you, you are so brave...like Fran I also love the straight one on you, they all look lovely but the straight has a "something" else, you look like you are 17..thank you for that tutorial.

Sharon Hendrickson: Hi Denise.. Thank you for this video. Any idea which color of marker would be good to tone down the brassy looking highlights in the Tressallure Sunset Glow. I recently purchased an Avery and love the style .

Lori F: Thank you for this! I’m going to try this.

Rosalie Menzies: Absolutely love your videos and what you share, and your lovely warm personality! :)

Karen: Hi Denise... thanks so much for this tip!! Would you have any reservations about trying this on HD fibers? Thanks again!!!

LoveMyDog: I love the Belle Tress wig on you and have been looking for a straight style like it. Would have bought (enthusiastically) until you said the wig is big. I have a 21" circumference, so you saved me from grief and another return .Do you wear another straight wig that is made for a smaller heard? I need to find one. Thank you for the rooting lesson.

romantic horror: What's nice about getting a variety pack of markers is you can draw roots in complimentary colors, like mahogany on a light reddish brown, or walnut on a light golden brown. Gives you some good options.

Esse: Thanks so very much for your helpful advice and you just being you

Brenda A.: The coloring/rooting made such a difference. If you have natural dark hair, the rooting really helps you make the transition to lighter colors. Thanks!

Mary Gillies: I have just discovered this wig and it looks beautiful. I am now a new subscriber. One question on Girl Mono, can you sweep the bangs to the left at all cause I am a left part girl and I notice you have it right parted. I have searched for a wig to love and this is a winner

Michele Proano Kressin: I wAs using a felt eyeliner pen and then just grabbed my husband Sharpie, but this is a great idea too! I also see that there are fabric markers and acrylic paint pens available as well. I'm going to try the paint pens next! Thank u!

S Jarboe: Great info. Thank you.

Maria Barradas: I have an Innuendo by Gabor, love the style but no rooting, I am going to try this, she is a straight wig so I must be careful since there are no curls if I make a mistake...fingers crossed, I have not been using it because I prefer roots on wigs but I am going to dive in...wish me luck :)...thanks for the video

Fran Harmon: Oh my gosh, I love that straight style on you!

Christina Knapp: I just want to make everyone aware that using the furniture markers on really blonde hair to create a root can turn the roots green. I have experienced this myself. Just be careful and I just thought I would throw that out there. I don’t think it would matter if you’re doing it on dark hair but on blonde hair it really shows. I am going to try a dark brown sharpie!

gillian lee: Thanks so much for sharing. I bought a blond wig but it needs to have lowlights for sure. Is the product non toxic?

Maranda Rock: Happy Mother’s Day you are truly a beautiful person, with a kind and generous spirit and hope your day is good to you!

Judy Anne: You make it look so easy. Your wig looks natural with that front lace

Vicky White: Thank you. Good video.

Julie Mataway: The Belle Tress Lady Latte in Mocha Cream looks fabulous on you! (I love how easily you interchange between curly and straight!) The color is you! The way that wig is shaded compliments your eyes perfectly. Those of us with blue/green eyes can't do that. Well, we could, but at my age I shan't. :) Thanks for the tutorial; rooting is my next adventure on the wig journey.

patiruchi patiruchi: Can you do the same rooting and lowlights on straight wigs?

Gina2190: Stiff thin paintbrush would give a nice effect too, prob more subtle than pen ? Still great idea

Carolynn Mathisen: Hi. Can you add high lites instead of rooting? I have a beautiful wig but she needs lighter color around my face. Thank you

Veronica Taylor: Has it ever bled into the cap on you?

AlwaysABeautifulLady: Any suggestions on how to re style Scarlet by Jon Renau? Maybe one of your viewers knows. The only time I ordered two same style was this style. I cannot get this wig to look enough to wear. Also what group can I join with wigs sisters to buy and sell wigs. I really learn something every time I watch your and other utubes. Thanks for sharing all your tips. I'm new to wearing wigs . Started three months ago .

Barnboxflorals: straight styles become you :)

Donna: Thank you Denise, I'll definitely give this a go - I just got the TOB Isla (we chatted about it in comments on one of your Isla reviews last night). I got it on closeout in the only color available, which is bronze. It needs some oomph and this should help!

Melanie Deardorff: Hi, Denise. Did you end up liking the Copic markers better than those furniture markers?
