Hey Glenn family Linwood here today, I'm gon na be showing you how to do a French braid for absolute beginners, which means we're gon na be starting with the basics. So I'm going to start off showing you how to do a standard, overhand, braid and then we're gon na work our way into a French braid. If you already know how to do an overhand braid in your well-skilled with that I'll buy the time stamp, so you can skip forward okay. So I'm choosing to begin on an overhand braid in just a singular ponytail, because it'll make it easier for you to see and manage. I would recommend doing this at least a minimum of ten times, so you get comfortable with it before you start trying to do a French braid in this hair. So in order to do this, we're going to go ahead and begin by placing our fingers in here. Just like this, so taking my index finger and my middle finger, and I just want to place it directly into that hair and they'll, give me three proportionate pieces, like so from there. I'M gon na go ahead and separate those pieces out using those same fingers. On the opposite hand, it'll just kind of help me keep things separated now. The key to overhand braiding is that we're going to always be bringing the outside strand over whatever strand is in the middle and I'll show you exactly what I mean so I'm right-handed, so I'm gon na start with the Strand on the right. You can start with either right or left it's totally up to you. We'Re gon na go ahead and pull that strand on over the middle strand, and that means our middle strand has not swap places with it. It'S become our right strand, then I'm going to come over to the left. We'Re gon na do the same thing. So this has now become my new middle. You can see it's in the middle, so I'm going to come from my left and pull it over the middle strand, which makes it my new middle strand, as you can see from there we're gon na come back to the right and pull right over the middle. Just like so then left over the middle when you're first learning this, it can be a bit hard to kind of control all of his hair. So if you're still finding it, you have some difficulty with keeping this braid symmetrical with keeping it tight or with getting. It even feel free to continue to practice this until it gets comfortable and begins to look a bit more neat so again left over middle right over middle. A few important things to note is that my hands are incredibly close to the area that I'm braiding. This makes the braid look significantly tighter, so see how tight the braid looks here. Versatile, tied it looked at the beginning of my hands, were slid further down the shaft of the hair. If your hands are further away from the earlier braiding, the whole braid looks looser if your hands are closer to the braid. The whole braid looks tighter and will actually feel significantly tighter, also so things to keep in mind, so we're just continuing that was leftover middle now we go to right over middle and just keep in mind whenever you're pulling from that outside strand. It is now becoming your new middle strand, so let me move her over a bit and that way you can continue to see. We'Ve got here, my left strand will come over the middle and my right strand will come over the middle and you'll just continue this. So once you have your overhand braiding down we're ready to go ahead and move into your French braiding, so practice this until you get comfortable and then move into the next step with us. Remember this is YouTube. You can pause you've more wine. You can even change the speed in your settings to wear it slower if you need it to be, I'm gon na take this down and that I'm gon na separate down the middle. This is because it's easier for you to control half of the head versus the hole hit when you're first learning, so I always teach on half of a head or in quarter sections. Okay, so I've dropped half of the head and I've detangled it well and, of course, you'll want to make sure that you really well de tangled to here the other half is just lightly pinned to the side here now, of course, if the client or if you Have curly, hair or kinky hair? It does help to blow this hair out with a blow-dryer and possibly even use a little bit of a pomade to help get some control, as I'm braiding with this texture here. I'Ll also give you some techniques on how to control silky or hair and smoother hair textures as well. Just so there's not a ton of flyaways, but I will ahead and get into this here. So I'm gon na move your angle a bit because I want you to be able to see it from right up front okay. So when I'm picking up a section of hair to braid, I usually like to start off with a triangle section, I'm gon na start off with a slightly bigger section here, even though honestly, the smaller sections are the more professional they look. This is a tutorial for beginners, so I don't want to give you extremely professional ways of doing this when you're trying to get down to basics but I'll give you those tips as we go along as well. So I'm gon na start off with a triangle section like this here. It honestly just makes it a bit easier for you to control and manipulate so from there I'm going to go ahead and just separate these into. It feels like three equal strands like so now from here. We'Re gon na do the same as we did before, bringing our outside strands over the middle again, I'm going to start with the right strand, because I'm right-handed so right over the middle and we're not picking up any hair just yet, then, from there we're gon na Go to left over middle as well now, if you'll notice on both of those there was hair from the outside sections that was coming over with us on this third one, there's no hair from the outside section coming with so we're going to have to add that Here, so I'm just going to take my finger and slide right across the scalp to the center of where I want that braid to be I'm going to go ahead and close. My fingers on that and we're going to slide my hands through to separate that hair out detangling and smoothing it nicely, and then I'm going to pass that over the middle strand like so now. If you'll notice, I'm not trying to keep this strand here on the right meat, so I'm just going to fall into my fist. Basically, as I grabbed that middle strand with my right hand, and I'm going to grab the left strand with my index finger and thumb, as I slide across the scalp on the other side, to add into that strand now, you'll want to make sure you try to Keep your size is pretty proportionate because if you're, adding super small and super big, it just looks lumpy and a mess but yeah. You want to keep this in mind every single step, so we're adding that here on over the center. Now, if you don't have fingernails to be able to cleanly part, you can use a comb for this step as well. Also, if you feel more comfortable doing this with your pinkies, you can do it with that. So as we added that in we went ahead and passed that left strand over the middle making it my new middle strand, now we're coming back to the right side, picking up here, you can also do it this way, picking up here, adding it to that right. Strand and bring it over the center - and this is essentially the pattern that you're going to do. The whole way down is pick up here on the left. Add it to the Strand on the left, smooth it out, bring it over the middle strand, pick up here on the right. Add it to the Strand on the right, smooth it out, bring it over the middle strand and just continuing that back and forth. Now, if you'll notice, I always smooth out the hair, as we go part of the reason for why it smooth out is because it helps to prevent any lumps in the braids here and if you'll also notice. My hands are constantly on the head. If I'm pulling away like this, it makes the whole grate loosen when you drop it see how loose it makes it. So you want to keep your hands pretty nice and snug nice and tight close to the base of the head here or honestly, like resting on the head just like this here. So we're gon na go back to the left side. Pick up. Some hair. Add it into the outside strand on the Left, let's just clean that up a little bit and then we will go ahead and bring it over the middle. Now I can see there's some bubbles in there. I don't know if you can catch it on camera, so I'm just going to lightly smooth a bit more and then pull it over the strands I'm working with. I can just kind of ball up in my fist, so I can easily control with my three fingers here when I'm finished, I can just go ahead and give that strand to my index and thumb and begin to work with that section up here as the other Ones are balled up in my hand as well just like so so we're going to continue this pattern all the way down now, as you're working on this you'll want to keep in mind if you're working with smaller sections, the entire braid is going to look tighter. So if you're taking really big sections, your whole braids gon na look more loose. If you take smaller sections in this, the whole braid is going to look more tight. It does not mean that you have to pull extremely tight in order to get the braids tight. Also, if your knuckles seem like they're hurting, your grip is a little too tight. So loosen up your grip, you'll notice that your knuckles feel much better and they won't be hurting when you're finished with the braid. So, just to give you an example on these next view, I'm going to go ahead and pick up smaller pieces, so you can see how the braid begins to change. So I'm going to take small sections on these and begin to add that, in over the center small section here add that in over the center now for French braiding, as well as Dutch braiding, the most important things you really want to focus on is keeping these Partings very clean, very precise. It'S what makes things look incredibly neat. So if you are sticking with a certain size parting, stick with that majority of the way through your design and make sure that you're being consistent, also keep in mind the direction of your hands and your body is going to determine which way that braid goes. So if you're noticing that on one side your braid goes down and on the other side it goes up and back there's a high likelihood. The angle of your hand is different, so your hands might be up here, causing it to go up more, whereas right now my hands are coming down a bit more, causing that braid to travel downward. So the braid is just following where you lead. So if you notice, you tend to favor a certain side and it tends to go downward just keep in mind, to keep your hand either towards the center of where you want that braid to go, or just slightly shift over in the direction that you want. That hair to flow as you braid, hopefully you can already see how much tighter the braid is looking here versus here, that's just off of using smaller pieces, so the size section that you pick up is going to make all of the difference when it comes down To how neat this braid looks now when you're starting out honestly, I would encourage you to take bigger sections. This is so you can find your rhythm and get accustomed to what you're doing. If you are more advanced and you want your braids to look neater pick up, smaller sections and they'll begin to tighten up and look even neater, also just a quick tip that will help out any new brighter or anyone trying to learn this braid. That is maybe accustomed to doing a different type of braid is talk your way through it. Like I talked you through it, it helps to appeal to the side of the brain that processes information. Instead of trying to appeal to the artistic side of the brain, you have to find a pattern and a flow before you can get artsy with this. You'Ve got to learn the rules before you can kind of just low in the rhythm or the pattern of what you're doing so. That being said, when you're braiding talk to yourself, just like I'm talking to you, even if you have to do, is lightly or quietly it'll make you feel crazy. But if your braids are not great, knowing things you're, actually crazy, just think you're a great waiter. So I would say pick up here on the right side. Add it to the right strand and smooth it out, bring it over the center strand and now to the left pick up here from the left side. Add it to the left strand, smooth it out and bring it over the middle strand. I see how, as I'm taking bigger pieces, you saw this braid is infinitely beginning to look like it's a bit looser and softer. So depending on the way you want that hair to fall. That'S how you're going to do it add hair to the right hand, side smooth it out, bring it over the center. Now as you get behind the ear. This is really important. You always want to make sure that, if you're working on yourself or on someone else that you begin to tilt that head forward the reason why is because the skin in the back of the neck is really stretchy and if you have them with their head up Of the whole time, it ends up being a really nice tight braid, but when they look down later, it can actually cause a bit of discomfort and some pooling under here that creates like bumps in the nape. You don't want to see that after it's pulling like that and it's causing bumps, it can actually lead to hair loss over time. So we want to make sure we're not pulling extremely tight, as we get back here. One of the ways that we can do that, while making sure that our braids still stay looking tight, is to have your client or have yourself tilt your head down once you get behind the ear, this is going to help ensure the things stay. Looking nice and tight, while not pulling too tight when you tilt your head down at the end of that service, I hope that makes sense if it does please. Let me know in the comment section down below so adding from the right bringing it right on over. Also, as you get down here, make it a point to tighten up your grip. You have more hair in your hands. The further you go so now is a good time to begin to tighten the grip of your hands, not of those fingers individually. That way, you're able to grip and hold this hair a bit more tight and it doesn't just become a mess back here from there. You also want to make it a point to get in there really well and rest your hands on the head. That way, you don't end up with that saggy butt in the back of the head. If you know what I'm talking about, where you can kind of push the bottom of the braid and it just kind of bounces back there, no one likes a baggy, but so from there we're gon na go ahead and just cross on over with the right strand. Come back to the left, if you'll notice, I'm running out of here on this right side, so I'm gradually taking bigger pieces on the left side, adding it in and crossing over. While I take smaller pieces on the right side and add in to cross over. This allows me to gradually balance out rather than running out of here on one side and still having here on the other. So I mean turn her a bit, so you can see exactly what I'm talking about here. We'Re going to go ahead and take a pretty good-sized section here. Add it into the outside strand and cross over okay and pick up a small section here and add into the outside strand and cross over on the opposite side. Keep in mind the first time that you do this is going to be difficult. I'Ve been doing this for over 20 years, I'm a bit more skilled, the more you do it the more easy it becomes for you to do so. Don'T stress or sweat the small stuff go through the motions and when you feel like you're, messing up continue braiding you're learning when you get it down, that's when you begin perfecting right now, don't worry about perfecting worry about getting your rhythm talk, your way through it. So you don't forget, there's a lot of times if you're accustomed to going right over middle left over middle right over middle, the issue becomes now you start adding in hair and it breaks your pattern, so it becomes add hair on the right right. Over a middle, add hair on the left left over middle, and you begin forgetting, where you add it in here and when you should go over the middle and it messes people once you get off of the scalp, you can just braid as normal and go all The way down to the ends of the hair as you've got that you now have a French braid down to the scalp. Now, if you're needing more control over that here, because it's too silky for you lightly mist it with water, don't get it soaking wet just lightly mist. It will help you to control that hair much better as you braid, and that way, you're able to work with that hair and if you need a bit of hold, you can either use a light amount of gel or a pomade as you braid, and that way. You'Re able to better control the hair without causing it to be a huge mess or having like hairspray and being sticky, and all that it still gives you a little bit of texture without making it hard to work with. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please be sure to leave them in the comment section down below and until next time you guys take care, god bless and stay clam. itsdaisy101: I learned how to French braid from your last video and 2+ years later, I still get compliments. We were at my daughter's wrestling tourney last weekend and the women behind me were mesmerized while I was braiding her hair. You are a true Godsend. I tried to braid for years and learned from you in less than 20 minutes. And yes, I did go on to learn other braids from you. Thank you

Tina Tomassetti: That was awesome. I'm a single mom of 2 boys with 2 younger brothers, never learned anything from my youth except pony tails and simple braids. Thanks. I haven't tried it yet, but feel confident. Thanks. Very well explained!

Summer Bummer: Have never in my life even attempted a French braid (though I have badly wanted to learn!) - l thought for sure it was super complicated and difficult, so I was too intimidated to even try. Well my daughter wanted double French braids for her school party tomorrow. One watch thru + rewatch of the start, mission accomplished! Of course they aren’t perfectly neat but a) they match each other in size and curve - yay! and b) kiddo is very happy with the result. I have no basis for comparison here but no matter. Between your thorough explanations and very helpful tips this mid-30s lady was able to fulfill a lifelong dream, so I sincerely appreciate your video. Who knows, maybe with some practice I might give it a go on myself one day!

Matt Moylan: My daughter is 5, has long curly hair, and I’ve been wanting to do this. Thanks for an easy to understand video, can’t wait to make her sit patiently while I practice

Ronnie Ferguson: Oh my goodness! I’ve been putting off French braiding my hair for forever because every time I wanted to do it, I had to watch another dang tutorial on it but with your video, you broke it down to the very basics and you were so dang good from the very BEGINNING that I caught on IMMEDIATELY! You are a marvel, thank you!

Lane Hartwell: I've tried to French braid before and I get so confused. I really appreciated when you told us to talk ourselves through it and explain to ourselves the pattern and the rhythm. I'm going to try this today. I always get lost and then frustrated and quit. Thank you!

Veronica Simmons: Wow, thank you so much! Incredible, yet simple tutorial. You’re so sweet to share your awesome knowledge, with your skill set. It’s beautiful.

Karen Guzman: Absolutely grateful!! You are truly amazing!! You explained the process perfectly!! The dos and the try to prevents! My niece has a Christmas play today and they asked her to wear French braids, your video was the first one to pop up!

Rebecca Robinson: Wow, this is SO helpful! Best breakdown tutorial that I've ever seen for, well, anything! So well done, thank you so much!

Malinda Jones: Your hair videos/tutorials are awesome, and I love listening to you. Your explanations are really clear. What tips can you give those of us who are trying to braid our own hair? Things like dealing with arm fatigue, and how to see what we’re doing! ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!

Karin S: Thanks so much for your clear instructions and demonstrations and most of all your tips! I am a long time braider, maybe 50 years if you count my childhood pigtails. I started French braiding in college by imitating others. I now have long salt and pepper covid hair and French braids restore my dignity and look great. But honestly no one ever showed me what I was doing and my braids are randomly beautiful or messy. I had no clue that I needed to keep my hands close to my head to make the braiding tight. I had no idea that behind the ear I should take less hair to prevent lumpiness. I will incorporate your methods into my braiding. Thank you thank you!

Jessica Alas-Fought: This is literally the best French braid tutorial I've ever seen!!! Not only is your voice so reassuring but you made it so simple. I've been practicing and practicing, I feel like I'm well on my way to being proficient! Love love love this video

Annie Serio: This has helped me make tighter braids!! I never knew what I was missing. Thank you so much!!

Michael Boucher: My girlfriend normally gets her mom to braid her hair and I offered to take over without any prior knowledge or experience. This video is so clean and helpful hopefully now I'll be able to do it for her when she gets out of the shower
