Hello, hello, hello and welcome to the 2022 wigathon. I am so incredibly excited to be doing this wigathon and i thank you for your patience because i wanted to do this last week. I wasn't able to because we were moving so on today. You'Re going to be learning so many different things about wigs, i'm going to be talking about marketing, i'm going to be talking about wig, making tips, i'm going to be um talking about a lot of amazing things, i'm going to be doing some giveaways, uh you're, going To be hearing from some of my students uh some of my most recent students, as well as some of the students from some of my previous training you're, going to be inspired uh, it's just going to be absolutely amazing. So do me a favor before we get deep into everything and know this we're going to be here all the way until six o'clock this evening, six o'clock pacific standard time, which is nine o'clock on the east coast. Gems over here is all right, let's get into it, but before i get deep into teaching and all of that stuff, let's just address my setup. Okay, so last friday really thursday, we started moving into our new place here and i am set up in my office. So my audio might sound a little bit weird right now, and definitely my camera setup is a little bit different and my background right now is like super white, because we're still moving in we're still um figuring out what we're gon na do to the walls and All of that stuff uh for the studio, so that's why it looks very, very plain right now, but that doesn't take away from uh. How amazing today is going to be so. Some of you are here for a number of different reasons. Some of you are here because you're looking for a place of like-minded individuals that love to be able to service people or that, maybe you just love, wigs or maybe you're waiting and you've been looking for somebody to teach you hair ventilation to teach you how to Modify wigs or maybe you're just here to learn about marketing your wig business or maybe you're just sitting on the sidelines spying, seeing what i'm going to say or do now, i'm just kidding but nonetheless you're here and i'm very, very, very excited for today. So many of you know my story, some of you do and some of you don't, but i'm gon na share. I feel very led to share my story this morning and how i got into um this amazing industry. So back in 2006 um i was driving home from work. I was actually going home for lunch. I was still on active duty in the air force. My best friend had come out to visit me shout out to nigeria and i was going home for lunch and so on the way home. I got a phone call from my mom. She had had a mammogram and she got the results back from her mammogram telling her that she had stage two breast cancer. I was completely devastated. Um you get in those modes where you're like. Oh, i hate that it happens to other people, but it's not going to happen to me and it's so silly that we think that way, but that's just a reality of how some people think and that's how i was thinking like. Oh, it's not gon na be my mom, my mom's gon na be here for forever and she's gon na live for a very long time and to get that phone call was um gut wrenching. For me so um i made arrangements to go back home to north carolina so that i could go with her to her first oncology. Appointment uh went to the appointment one of the first questions my mom asked after they briefed her on everything. One of the first questions she asked is: am i going to lose my hair when i go through chemotherapy and the doctor explained to us that not every chemo um takes out your hair, but this particular one she was on. Would um - and you know it didn't - seem like it phased her a bit, but i knew it did because it was one of the first questions that she asked: um pertaining to the side effects of the chemotherapy and so to make a long story short. My mom um was wearing these unflattering wigs and i just got tired of seeing her wear the unflattering wigs and i had taught myself how to ventilate um, probably about a year prior to that, but didn't think that i would ever use it. So i never really revisited it until uh, her cancer diagnosis, and you know that's when i said okay, there's got to be a way that i can make my mom the type of wigs that they wear in television and film, because what she's currently wearing is a Hot mess and so um i didn't - have any resources back then this was in 2006. This. This was before youtube before online training was even a thing um and i didn't know. I didn't know that um i could have just flown over to europe to learn the skill. I guess that's not what god wanted for me, so i had to figure it out on my own now there were some books and stuff that i read, but some of the strategies and techniques and tools were just old uh to me, and i didn't understand it. My brain just didn't operate that way, so i had to figure out my own approach to uh making lace wigs from scratch and when i did, it took me a very long time to figure it out too um. There were a lot of times that i wanted to give up, but it was my mom's fight that made me want to fight and create something for her so that she did not have to look like what she was going through and that's the that's. The driving force that was the driving force for me then, and it's still the driving force for me now and um. So i created the lace wig training system after i taught myself how to make wigs uh from scratch in my own way, uh not getting my strategies and techniques from out of a book or anything like that um. I decided that i didn't want anybody else to have to search and find things like. I did so. I created the very first ever lacewick training system um. I believe it was back in 07 or 08 and it was the only one of its kind, and so i started doing seminars and all of that stuff, and my mom was my model for the lace week, training system after i made it her first week. I saw how it completely changed her perception about how she was feeling about herself, and i knew that this was something that i needed to do to help other people. So, of course, if you know me, you know, i love the lord, even in the first lace week, training system. If you look through those modules, i may bring up a screenshot um in a little bit. But if you look through those modules, those booklets they're scriptures even back, then i still love the lord um. So i took it to god in prayer and said all right god. How like i need to. I want to help other people. How am i going to do this? Well little did, i know, is that i didn't realize that he prepared me to teach this skill way before i actually developed the system to teach this skill and the way the lord prepared me to do that was through teaching. How to braid hair, so i had already started braids by breslin in oh three um and i was teaching people how to do braids and cornrows and different weaving techniques and all of that stuff. And i didn't realize that that's how the lord was equipping me to be able to teach lace, wigs, and so when it was time for me to teach the skill i developed it um the entire curriculum from scratch. Um, it was six dvds, two workbooks, a glossary and four handouts, and it taught you step by step how to make lace, wigs from scratch, from hair ventilation to um mustaches to frontals. There were no, i didn't teach closures back then, but i taught the full lace wig and all, and it was truly truly amazing. Um my mom was the model i was um. She used to assist me for all of the live events, so all of the hands-on events - my mom assisted me until she couldn't physically do it anymore because of the illness. So she battled for six years almost to the date of her diagnosis, um. She was cancer. Free for six years, actually so she went through. She had her chemo and her surgery and she was cancer-free for six years, almost to the exact date, and then her cancer came back metastatic in her as malignant fluid in her lungs and um. When her cancer came back, they gave her nine months to live. She lived for four years. We took care of her those last four years of her life and um. She wasn't able to uh, be the model for the 2.0 system that i refilmed but um. I was just so thankful to be able to spend that last time with mom when she was with us, and so she passed away the day after mother's day in 2016 and um. Then we moved out here to vegas. That'S when i finally was able to refilm uh lace, wig training system 2.0, what it was then, and just last year i revamped the entire program and renamed it and added the mentorship program and called it lacewig university, which is why you all are here right now And so that's my story, that's how i got into the amazing world of making wigs from scratch. It is something that um that is near and dear to my heart because of my mom's battle with breast cancer. I spent a lot of time in oh, my goodness. I spent a lot of time in cancer centers. I'Ve talked to men and women who suffer from hair loss. In fact, the last four years my mom's hair loss was permanent because in order for her to live, she had to stay on chemotherapy and her hair. Just it just never grew back, but there's so many stories that i have from people who have battled with cancer and they lose their hair and they don't grow it back, and this is not just women, it's men as well um, and it is heartbreaking. Um. One of the one of the most heartbreaking things i think for me was the look on my mom's face when um this was early on uh we went into. They had a salon inside the cancer center, one of the cancer centers that she used to go to and this hair salon we went in and um obviously to see what they have for my mom in terms of wigs. Now my mom is a black woman with um a 4c texture hair. So we walk into this salon inside the cancer center and we're looking around and the lady the stylist hands my mom a silky straight black wig, with texture with the texture of hair. That was not even remotely close to hers and that broke my heart, because i can only imagine how many men and women that walk in looking for a solution only to be handed something that looks nothing like their hair and that's just makes me it just made Me so sad and i wanted to contribute in a way to help people help other people who are experiencing permanent hair loss or going through cancer. Just like my mom was, and so here i am - and i will continue to teach this skill, and so the lord tells me to go and do something else. Um i've had thousands of students for well over 70 countries that have gone through some of my lace week, training and i get to wake up every day and teach this amazing skill, and it is something that i absolutely love to do so again. I'Ve been with you, since your children were babies, babies, that's how long i've been so this year makes 18 19.. I think 19. 3. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19., yeah, like 19, 18 or 19 years in business this year, and so my kids are now i'm an 18 year old and gosh. That sounds so weird and a 16 year old. That'Ll be 17 at the end of the month, and some of you have been with me since my kids were, babies is insane and that i don't take that lightly. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Wow look at see. I still have my dvd. So i started with dvds selling dvds so crazy, so crazy, uh, my mom had four strokes in one month, my god, i'm so sorry, uh paralyzed her right side, so she could no longer do her hair. We started going to beauty supplies. She picked out these hairstyles for the street. Oh man, oh no, oh man, i'm praying that your mom um is doing well. I hope she is, and god bless you listen being a caregiver. I know what that's like firsthand being a caregiver. It is not easy people. Don'T understand how hard that can be. It'S taxing on. You is taxing on your body. It can be stressful at times, so god bless you. In fact, i pray a special anointing of rest over you, because sometimes we can get so caught up in taking care and being a caregiver that we don't rest. So i pray that you get some divine rest in jesus name uh. So i started looking at my hairstyle on instagram and found something new how i came across marquetta. Oh, that is amazing, jason. How are you i love that you figured out your own way. Those techniques are my foundation. I just love you. You know what you are amazing and guess what y'all so jason. First of all, jason's interview is amazing because he's going to be teaching a technique for how to shampoo your wigs, so the hair doesn't wash through that you'll have to stay to the very end. I saved the good stuff. The whole thing is gon na be good y'all, but jason's interview is uh is coming up and um. It is amazing and guess what, if you're coming to las vegas jason will be there, as well as a volunteer uh to help on the hands-on day when we're doing all the ventilating. I'M super excited for that um jason was one of the first was one of the people to buy the first last week, training system, so he has been um at this for a very long time and he's incredibly talented and one of my favorite people uh. Thank you so much give peace and joy in your heart. Yes, i lost my baby sister, my goodness it will be three years may 30th to stage four breast cancer and that's why i've taken this journey. Oh man, i'm so sorry to hear that. I'M so sorry to hear that um. I know how i know how it can be. I just pray uh for your peace, uh martini says i'm with you marquette. It drives me crazy to see someone with the silky straight when they have kinky curly beautiful hair. Yes, you know what's crazy, so i was just thinking about this the other day. So a lot of people don't know that i spent nine and a half years in the united states air force. This has nothing to do with wigs by the way, but i don't know why i'm sharing this it'll help somebody. So i spent nine and a half years in the united states, air force and one of the craziest things about being in the military was the fact that we were not allowed to wear our natural hair. So you can wear your natural hair in its natural texture because it was considered fattish. How is my natural texture considered a fad, so you are almost forced to manipulate your hair in such a way that it appeared neat. Well, what is neat and who makes them. I could go there on a whole, another yeah, so um, i don't even know, oh that's what made me think about silky straight um, because and then you have to be very careful with wearing braids and you couldn't wear locks at that time. They'Ve since changed it. Thank god but yeah. So it was something that was wildly accepted, that uh silky straight meant neat and they it was assumed that that's what a lot of african-american, i'm gon na say black women. It was assumed that's what a lot of black women wanted, and that's just not the case. We want options that look natural, not things that look like other textures that ours um is not designed to make. Does that make sense? Y'All? Oh man, what's up aisha? How are you aisha is another amazing student who's, not accepting clients now but she's. So incredibly, talented and her story is awesome. I actually found out about aisha, so you'll you can find her on instagram um under the name martina giavanchi, so i actually found out about her through her mom. Her mom slid in my dms and was like listen. My daughter's work is amazing. Take a look, and i was completely blown away um. She didn't have any prior experience with making lace wigs from scratch and what she did in a short time of 18 months completely blew me away she's. Another interview that i have featured for today. Her story is absolutely amazing. Uh. In fact, when you hear me talk about some of my students who made their first ten thousand dollars, who made money, making lace, wigs she's one of them, here's here's her her short testimony right here, uh i made my first ten thousand dollars making lace wigs. I was able to master her most advanced teaching in the system and made my first ten thousand dollars. There'S a training inside lace. Wig university called how to make your first ten thousand dollars, making lace. Wigs, listen, i don't teach theory. I teach practical things that actually work and i don't believe in holding any content or information back if it's up here, it's coming out of here and be downloaded into you, so that you can use it to implement into your business. I don't believe in that. I don't believe in holding something back out of fear that somebody else is going to take it and do something better or or more successful, because what for you is for you and what's for me, is for me and how dare i hold something back when god Gave it all to me, if god gives it to me, it is my god-given duty to use my platform and influence to share it with you all right so know that when you are learning from me know that you're getting like i, i don't have anything to Hide so i'm giving you everything, i've got hey and how are you thank you. We pray together every week um on a prayer team that we have to pray over our nation because we need it and ed is going to be coming to vegas, to teach about uh pricing, your wigs and all kinds of amazing things. So before i go into teaching, i just want to teach about um four different ways that you can make money: not learning lace, wigs but just learning, hair ventilation, just hair ventilation. This is when i need this is when i need uh moderators. This is what i need moderators. Okay, i think i just took care of it there you go all right, hello, mcgregor from mississippi i used to be stationed there temporarily um. I was in biloxi biloxi, mississippi about all of the casinos and all of that good stuff. I had a good time in mississippi. I really enjoyed being there by the time that i was there all right. It'S so painful that i'm finding it difficult to enroll. Tell me: what's going on all right, while you're getting your thoughts together and telling me what's going on, i am going to teach really fast. I want to talk about four different ways that you can learn: uh, that you can use hair ventilation to make money. Um. Listen, never let me say this before i get into this teaching. You should never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever feel guilty for making money when you're in business, because you are in business to make money. I'Ve never heard of an entrepreneur go into business to just make a little bit of money. What we have to realize and understand is that, let me say this before i make my next statement. I am a licensed and ordained minister, i mention the lord in almost everything i do so. If that offends you you're more than welcome to sign off, i totally understand all right, but i'm going to talk about the lord. So when you are in business to make money, god does not call you to business to make pennies, because that money is god's seed and it is our responsibility to sow it in ground. That'S gon na reap harvest, whether that is um with people you employ, or people who patronize your business whatever. It is all right, so don't ever feel guilty for talking about money or for making money. We are in business to help people and to make money all right so right now i want to talk about five different ways that you can make money with: hair ventilation all right. So a lot of people uh get close-minded when it comes to um ways that you can make money with lace, wigs and they think that you have to just sit there all day and ventilate uh ventilate lace, wigs, full lace, wigs all day long and that could Not be further from the truth, all right there are so many different ways that you can make money with lace, wigs or make money with hair ventilation all right. The first one, lace closures. So there's an interview that you're going to see in a couple minutes. Yeah, probably about 45 to minutes to an hour by one of my students called paige, ryan paige makes closures and that's it. She doesn't want to make lace wigs from scratch, and that's okay, you don't have to you, can do just exactly what you want to do. I always say that you are only limited to how far your mind can think, and so you can make lace closures. You can just do hairlines. In fact, one of the first students that i highlighted on here on instagram, her name is arden beauty bar. That'S what she does she does more than that, but uh when i think of hairlines, i always think of her, and i always think of another young lady that i taught her ventilation to which is taylormade jane. If you haven't seen her work, it is jaw-dropping and she is absolutely amazing. In fact she where is her boom? She has made over 50 thousand she made over fifty thousand dollars in less than six months. She says teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime, and that's just what marquita president did for me. I made over fifty thousand dollars in less than six months. Her work is outstanding. Her work is amazing, all right so doing. Hairlines hairlines is one of those things that it's almost like a specialty type of thing. It doesn't have to be, but it is an art uh. There are some wig makers who will spend an entire day, just perfecting a hairline now granted. That may be something like for a movie or uh for something like that y'all i have to um. I i need to turn on my air because i am about to roast in this office, because this light is right here and i need to handle this right now. So let me just adjust, i feel, like it's 95 degrees right here. Okay done so hairlines uh hairlines is one of those things that um. I always tell people when you're making a wig. The whole point is for it to not look like a wig, so when you're creating hairlines and when you're looking at ventilating patterns and all of those different things, you need to make sure that you are mimicking the growth pattern of hair and that you're mimicking the Texture of hair, so i taught this technique um. I don't know probably about a year ago about hairlines, if you think about hairlines, like think about my hair right, my braider is going to kill me if she sees me show you all my edges, because i didn't lay them down today. I'Ve been to the gym and i swear them out. But if you look at my hair like i have that super curly kinky hair around my edges, i'm not going to ventilate straight hair over here. It'S going to be a texture! That'S more curly around my edges! To mimic my actual hair texture for a more realistic look all right, so that's another uh area that you can focus on when you learn hair ventilation. I already talked about closures closures. People get close-minded, no pun intended when it comes to closures too, because they think that it always has to be one size, and that's it like a four by whatever four by four or whatever it is. It doesn't have to be that way. You can make a closure that is one inch in width and three inches deep. You can do whatever you want, you can make whatever you want. The key is learning the foundational skills and then building on those skills to create your own strategies, approaches and techniques. To this amazing industry now another one um that i absolutely love. If you looked at my reels, some of my reels in the past, probably two to three weeks, you've seen me feature a lot of these things called hair patches and what a hair patch is is exactly what it says. It'S a patch of hair that has been ventilated to fit in a specific balding area of your client's head. Now this can be done for men. It can be done for women. It can be done in different textures if you've seen some of the videos of these people. I mean this is just it's amazing to see uh some of the videos of the people integrating uh the locks like the. If they like. Let'S say somebody came into the salon and they had locks all the way around here, but they were bald at the top and then you see them take a textured topper uh, that's in like a 4c texture um, attach it and then make locks out of it. For a more realistic look, sometimes i've seen a couple pieces where you can really see the grid lines in the lace but think about. If you made one from scratch for your client and then they took it to the stylist to integrate it's going to look so amazing and so realistic. Those hair patches are amazing. You can ventilate those hair patches or you can use. I don't like to call it a ventilating machine because ventilating is tying knots and this particular machine just punches the hair into the pu material, but you can use that hair punch. I call it a hair injection machine, you can use those, they have hand-held ones and they have the big industrial sized ones as well um. So there are many different things that you can do now. Those two things, hair punching is taught inside lacewig university, but not with the machine. I don't teach the hair injection machine. Yet i will probably let me think about. Let me choose my words wisely, there's a good chance that i may added um. Add some training for that a little bit later on, because i do have the big industrial machine and um eventually, once i sit down long enough, i will order the handheld machine and do some teaching and training with that as well. But that's just another avenue and you don't even have to really learn. I think you should know how to ventilate when you do that, but i mean technically you're not ventilating and it's pretty freaking awesome to be able to do that and help people and then the last one is repairs. Oh my goodness. So when everything with supply chain shortages being the way they are now uh, there is a shortage for hair pieces across the board. Um closures, frontals toppers lace, wigs full lace, like you name, lace, front wigs. There has been a shortage across the board for all of these things, and so, instead of people a lot of times, what people would do is they would just buy a new wig or buy a new closure, buy a new frontal instead of um having it repaired. But a lot of my students have repair businesses that have been uh excelling through the roof because of supply chain shortages. They can't get their uh these new pieces in quick enough, so some of my students have just been focusing on doing repairs and adding hair into where um something has been over plucked or adding hair, where there's a hole and doing these different repairs. So that's just four ways to make money when you learn or five ways to make money for four or five four with hair ventilation, all right, there's so many other things that you can do that i'll get into later on all right. So our first interview is coming up in just a few minutes, but i want to talk right now about lace, wig university. Yes, yes, yes, yes, insurance! That is so sweet. I want to go so bad too can't afford it right now. I'M guessing! I think you mean vegas, i'm not sure, but right now i want to take this opportunity to talk about lace, wig university. Okay phase, two unlocks very, very soon, uh actually and phase two is the lace wig mentorship program. So here's the thing about lace, wigs and learning this skill. It'S one thing to learn the skill, but it's a whole nother ball game to learn how to market your services. Any a lot of people learn something and they become very, very talented at it, but they don't know how to market their services and that's the biggest disconnect for a lot of people. So that's why it's so important to me to that. I added the business side of things as well. All right, you have to be able to take what you learn and generate income with it, because that's why a lot of you are here to generate income to make money with lace, wigs so phase two. Is your mentorship lace, wig mentorship program that is broken down into three months, so your first month is making a closure piece from scratch. All right, you make it from scratch. Everybody goes through it together, so you actually make your first piece with um lacewing university. Okay, so that's the first one, so you have 30 days and each day you get a different video with different instructions. So the mentorship program gives you 90 different videos of things to do it's something different every single day, all right and listen. If you fall behind it's okay, it's all right! If you fall behind it's okay, you just catch up when you can okay! So that's month, one month, two uh and in between that we have a live mentorship meeting together. Your social media, um lead generation all kinds of amazing things, because a lot of people do not understand the marketing side of things, and it's so heartbreaking. I saw so many talented people uh that i graduated beauty school with that did not understand how to properly market their services, and so they ended up in a job that they hated because they couldn't figure out how to make it work. And unfortunately, you don't learn that in in most cosmetology schools you learn how to pass state board. I won't say that for every cosmetology school but i'll say for a lot of them, you learn how to pass state board, but you don't learn how to properly market. Your services, okay and the last month, is all about mindset. People underestimate how powerful the mind can be. How powerful the mind is all right, it's very important to get rid of any head trash that you have, so you don't have to deal with any of that when you're building your business, all right, you don't want to carry any of that head trash over into Your business, and so we focus an entire month on rewiring the mind to be able to set you up for success all right after the mentorship is over. We go into phase three, which is your bonuses, okay, so what i did was i flew in instructors literally from all over the world, all right from the uk from uh alabama from new york from you name it some of everywhere uh, some of the instructors that I flew in for some of my students and some were other wig makers that i teamed up with that. lisa becom: Dear Marquetta, I hope you wouldn’t mind going back a few years to talk to me about your preventative mastectomy surgery. You look beautiful and I certainly hope things are all healed and that you are very happy with your decision. I’m in a terrible place right now, having several relatives on my mother’s side who developed breast cancer, including my mother. Her diagnosis was 43 years ago…two more sisters (aunts) were diagnosed with the disease after my mother, one having died from it. Two more sisters developed fibroid tumors that had to be removed plus a first cousin at the age of 50 had to have a double mastectomy. I’ve been scared to the point of rubbing for lumps, crippled with fear checking and checking..I developed nerve damage in my arm and fingers and has numbness and tingling on the left side of my chest for over a year. Therapy, counseling, meds…done all that, and current therapist is not much help. Now that my parents have both passed away, I feel I’m free to pursue a preventative mastectomy. But I’m scared to death about that too, I mean I is surgery with many possible complications. My questions to you are, and I hope you will answer and give me your most honest answers; were you positive for genetic breast cancer testing (my initial brca1&2 were negative but I have more testing to go through); how do your breasts feel, hard as a rock, lumpy? Are they numb with no feeling? I know mammograms are no longer needed but do you go for MRI testing every year? Must you examine your breast/chest area still? How much did your surgery cost? I would very much appreciate any honesty and help you could send me; my life is hardly worth living…..thank you and God bless you.❤️
