No, it's like my fourth time in New York, but you know every time I come. I got to be getting the sinuses and stuff.. I guess I got to get used to the air., The air., What don't be talking'bout our air. Right, ( laughing ). I know you know what I'm sorry. -'Cause. You got that fresh stuff in Atlanta. Right. We got the fresh down there, you know., But I think I got to get broken in with the air Mmm hmm., But I love New York. [ Ursula ]. Okay, you got to come more often. Yeah. I think I got to come more often.. You got to come through an slay, some wigs. Yes.. Yes exactly.. You are the originator of the phrase ``, What lace ?''? What Yes. OMG You created? That. Thank you., Hon, you better trademark, that., Right Trademark! That thing I need trademarking ,'cause. My people, love trademarking, stuff., (, laughing ), Yup. Y'all need to go on and get that patent. Right. ,'Cause. The lace is just is just unclockable.. Thank you! So much. We love that.. You know what I've been doing hair for six years, so it's like I'm still new in it., But you know I just thank God that I'm you know., I grow so fast. Yeah.. You know so quick. Only six years, Only six years., Wow. That'S amazing. Thank you. That one is talent.. That is really amazing. I'M happy to have you here., Even more now., (, laughing ), Right., (, laughing ) And it's funny. Well today takes us right into our hot hair topic., Which is black men and the hair industry. Mmm.. Well, what do I think about that Now? Why is it that women love to have their hair slayed by a man. Right By a man. By a man versus a women. [ Ursula ], Like they can't wait.? But when little boys are, you know growing up and they want to become. You know hair stylists. Right. Or they love playing in dolls.. Why do they get so much negative feedback from their family And don't let them pick up a comb. Yes.? What'S up with that? Well, you know what I feel like growing up. I used to you know. I played with dolls. So and I didn't know I wanted to do hair., So it was like my Dad would have a problem with it., But my Mom. She would be fine with it. Like she was like ``. Okay, maybe that's what my son want to do? You know he might want to do hair'', But you know growing up. I used to play with dolls and, like I used to watch airplanes and stuff., I had a whole list of careers. I thought I wanted to be like a pilot or you know, like a meteorologist., I love weather, but you know. Yeah, I'm here today like for hair so. Right. So at what moment did you know that you wanted to do hair? I was say when I was 21 going on 22. [ Kia ] Okay., Like I was working in a fast food restaurant.. I was in a bunch of fast food restaurants and I was tired of being broke. [ Kia, ] Right.. I was like. I need to start, you know doing something on the side.. You know what I'm saying ,'cause like my aunt. She did hair and she's done, hair for like 20 years. And like I'll, be fascinated like every time I go to the shop. She would always have all these clients and like be day in and day out, doing, hair. and then like. She would have all these like designer bags and stuff.. So I was like: well maybe you know, let me get into it and see what it's about. ( laughing ). So I got into hair. It was right around my birthday.. I was going to like clients, houses and stuff, and I was like advertising on Instagram.. It was like just coming out at the time. And so like I was building my clientele on the Instagram app and Craigslist and stuff. And, like I literally stepped into a shop that next year. A hair salon. So it's been up ever since. Wow. What a great story. Thank you. Did you prove yourself? Did you have to prove yourself when you got into the salon I did. Like? Was it a different world? It was a different world because back then the salons were. It was the thing to be in. Like today. I feel like now it's a bunch of drama sometimes. But like back, then it was the thing to be in.. You had to be in the hair salon., So I had to prove myself because I was the only one there with no clients. Right., And so my aunt was like ,''. What are you doing here? Standing here ?'', We got a college campus up the street.'', an all girls college campus.''. You need to go up there and pass your cards out'' and do something.''. So that's what I did.. I got these little cheap cards and I went to Spelman College and I went up there and was passing cards out. Getting kicked off the campuses.. I had a little girl. I was like ,''. If you, let me in I'll, do your styling for free.'' And then literally every time I go in a college campus, a slew of girls would come and get their hair done. [, Ursula ], Right., So yeah I had to literally build my clientele that way.. Do you feel, like you had to prove yourself more because you were a boy Yeah. Or because you were a new stylist at that, And you know what that's a great question'cause. I was the only male in that salon. [ Ursula ] Really Yeah. So it was like I had to prove myself'cause like the girls. They were like uh-uh, he ain't finna, be in here, taking all these clients and doing this and doing that. ( laughing ) - And you know my aunt was 40 years old. So at the time And like you know, she had a bunch of other, like you know, older women there. And they was like very hard on me.. They was like you need to go out there like --. No, you ain't. No, this is not for you.. You just in here sitting in here wasting your money wasting your time.. This is just not the place for you., So I had to prove myself to them like. Let me show what you know what I'm'bout to do. And like even today, they always be like I'm. So proud of you, like didn't, never think you was going to be this far and stuff like that. But oh yeah, it was a hard time, but I loved it. You know it challenged me.. What do you think is motivating more men to be to be open about there interest in doing hair.? Like you have Anthony Cuss, you have African Tay Yes. Like they're open. They don't care. Like what do you think about that? I think it's amazing.. You know what I'm saying, And I think that the males in the hair industry, like is, like you know how the women in the rap industry, like they're, catty and stuff, like I think for the male. Is this total opposite., Like? I think we all come together in just like you know, be a force to be reckoned with and its more of a power. You know like a team basically., And I like that., I feel like for sometime like the women they kinda, some women they'd be like hating on that type of thing, but I like it.. So how do you feel about men just becoming more comfortable, like exploring different styles, with their natural hair, Like the braid Yeah., The quick weaves that they do. The males, weaves the beard right, (, laughs, )? How do you feel about that yes.? I feel nigga all got beard: okay, [ Kia ]. They tryna act, shy now Right. right., but don't worry, they're gon na be coming right, in. Moving on we're, not a clacky., Those little fun roof. Ah, you know what I'm saying: Uh-huh.'lil sun, roof. Okay. Came back with my seven missile. [ Kia And Ursula ] Okay. ( laughs ). First, they started with the dye.. What'S the dye for Bigen. Yes., They started with that they were coloring. The you know, the receding. Nasty bro. Keep trimming that occasionally. Keep trimming up all the way up. There. Ooh, yes, honey. Okay.. Sometimes you can the Bigen dripping of they -- Yeah.. They nasty. That was nasty. Right. Uh-Huh. Ooh cover that.. What I always admire about you is that you don't take yourself so seriously, and I think that I don't know what else you would be if you weren't here. Right.. You think that you -- what would be your other passion ?'cause? I think you could be a great comedian., Everybody says: that. (, Ursula laughs ). You know, I feel, like a comedian is a very hard task, but you know not. Everybody will find you funny. [ Kia, ] Right.. You know what I'm saying Like you been on. A stage thinking that your joke is so funny and people be looking at you like. Okay, you ain't funny at all, so next. [ Kia, ] Yeah., You know so I think even that industry, the you know cutthroat industry too. Like if you aint funny, is you just not funny. So yeah.? So what do you have to say for aspiring male hairstylists? Like what's some motivation advice for them, I would say just be yourself. if you love this industry like is here is for you., Especially if you have the passion for doing hair. Like you're gon na come in you're gon na work, you got ta work hard.. Nothing comes easy, but you know just be yourself like just be in it for you. And don't let anyone deter. You know your decision in doing hair.'cause like some of my family members, they were like `` nah. You don't need to do. It'', Like at the point in my life, I was like 20 years old.. I wasn't really like. I wasn't out the closet yet. So for my mom, like the women in my family, they would you know, being more open to me, like you know, doing hair but like for my father and uncles. [ Kia, ] Yeah.. They were like hard on me like no.. That'S a sign that you, maybe you know gay and stuff. And like they were hard on me., But now that I'm in it and I'm successful in it now they see the money they kind of all say: `` Hi'' Drop me some coins. Okay, How to do the celebrity doing that? Where can I buy some money, ( laughs, ), Interesting., Right they interested.. They want to do Allure.. How you do that and do this Uh-huh.. But just five six years ago you were like'' Uh-huh you trying this ?'' and I don't even know honey. Now you want the corn. Okay, ( laughs, ), See how life change So we've been hearing rumors about a possible transition for you Set the record straight like what's tea? Well, look at this shit.! Yes, we wan na know., What's happening, God where'd! You people come from ( laughs, ). Well, you know what that is a rumor, but it is not true. [ Kia ], Really, I feel like transitioning, is a lot of work. You have to. It has to be in you to do it. Like you just can't. Do it'cause its a hot day you know. And I know if I was transitioned like I would be -- Fire. You know look at me: now. Right., (, laughs, ), But it's a lot of work. This everyday thing. I can't do it. Okay. Its not for me. [ Alonzo ] Its a lot of up heat, its a lot of attention and I feel like its like. I can't do it. Its fun like cross dressing.. I love just doing it. You know we're having different characters and stuff so. [ Kia And Ursula ] Yes., Just having fun with your look, I think that's something that everybody shapes and form -- [, Alonzo, ] Right, yes. be comfortable enough to do. And I think its more open, like its A lot more people doing that these days, so I love it.. So do you have like any hairstylists that you've looked up to when you were first starting out? Of course, Tokyo Stylez. Like he was the first one I looked up to like when doing wigs.'cause. He was -- he's the put'em on and stuff. [ Kia ] Yeah., Like she's, just put them on and be like [ Kia, ] Yeah right. Honey. If she could do it, I could do it honey.. So let me get on with the program and let me start creating wigs and you know Tokyo has such a. You know a nice face.. So I was like I got a nice face too. So let me see what I could do. ( laughs ). I love it. Yes. Shoutout to all the guys in the industry. That'S killing the game. Like you said, Tokyo Stylez. We have Jonny Wright whose worked with Michelle Obama -- Yes. For over 8 years., [ Ursula ]. We also have Cliff Famine, Neil Farina Tym Wallace., Shout out to all that y'all are killing it. Killing it.. So in that note I wanna tell us a bit more about Alana., Since you know.. Where is Alana Well Alana, she starts to jump out every now and then. Shake up the scene turn a few necks. [ Kia And Ursula ] Hmm-mm right.. But Alana is someone who is very high. Maintenance. She's kinda bougie a lil bit. You know she's, like a you, know: she's nice, you know she's gon na give you nice she's, not gon na just be like talking. You know, coming in and doing all this crappy stuff.. You know she's gon na speak to everyone. [ Ursula ] Okay.. You know, but its a quick hi and bye type of situation. [, Ursula ] Got it don't sit too long. She's in and she's out., ( laughs, ). You know she come in. You know she leaves. All right guys. If you don't know, that's Alonzo's alter ego. Alana. [ Alonzo, ] Hmm-mm., Wait all these different hair changes and beautiful wigs. You can't have just one alter ego Right., I'm sure you have a couple. A million. Really When the hair is short talk to me. when the hair is short, When the hair is short. She'S she could be Taraji, she could be Ooh. You know what I'm saying she could be a lil Mary J. She could be a lil Rihanna.. Oh okay., You know what I'm saying The shortcut I feel like I'm Rihanna sometimes.. You know I love the short cuts. You do on her line., It's thickening like every time, every single time. I just like that. Shortcut. [, Ursula ] Okay., But every time I give me that little shortcut, I'm like okay, okay, I'm Riri! Sometimes you know so hey.. Well, since we named rappin. Right.. Tell us some of the celebrities you've worked with. Give us the resume. Right., Oh my god, the resume. Naomi Campbell. [ Alonzo ], Oh yes, honey! Just recently I love Naomi [, Ursula ] Ooh. She's got everything like I love her., Megan Thee, Stallion., [, Kia, ] Ooh. I love her. Yes.. I love Megan., [, Alonzo ], Of course, Portia from Housewives, [ Ursula ] okay.. One of my you know one of my favorite clients. Black China sometimes.. I do her wigs. Nice. And a lot of other celebrities. I'Ve worked with. Anybody else. You want to work with that. You haven't work with. I would love to do. Rihanna. A wig for her. And, of course I would love to do Oprah. Oprah. I feel like someone who isn't an everyday woman like -- [, Ursula ] Yes., Who doesn't work quite a lot.. You know like she just like her hair, full and curls. Like that's. The type of size I mean like the everyday style., You know like something not too much., You know Other than wigs. Is there anything else that you're, you know specializing Other than wigs? I would say I love color.. I love the colored hair. Color is my specialty. And I fee like those go hand in hand., Especially when you want to you know, decide to do a blonde one day and gon na go red. The next day. You're gon na. Do this do that.? You could do so many different things with wigs., So what would you say if someone can't afford a celebrity prices like you.? What can they do to keep their hair healthy? Don'T do nothing to it. Like if you aint got the money to maintain the upkeep like the color and stuff., Then I won't recommend you do it.. You know, then, if you do, you can go to a stylist that specializes in color or wigs., But I would just say: if you not, you know you aint got the fine penny, then you might need to do it yourself at home. Like, but don't the colors. Right., Don't do the color yeah. -'cause your get a broken hair.! Don'T try this at home., (, laughs, ) -'Cause! If you have a bunch of hair, your beauty, hair hmm-mm, just leave like how it is. Right so word on the street - is that you actually teach classes that we need to attend. Ooh. Talk about that about your classes., Yes, honey, I'll teach y'all! How to these wigs I'll teach y'all how to apply them., how to customize them to make them look as natural as possible.'cause? That'S something that we really need. [ Ursula ] Yeah.. You know like this day and age. A lot of wigs be looking crazy, looking., Yeah., (, laughs ), So I teach you know how to make them.. I whole bunch of things like marketing how to market. You know the wig that you sell on your area. Yeah.. I teach a whole bunch.. Is it a one day course, or It is a one day course about eight hours. And its a look and learn? So I feel like with look and learn their easier for me and the student, because they can take like a video and they could go home and do it themselves and make their own way into doing. It. Like I feel like. I had hands on classes before and I was -- Its a lot., Its a lot, its a lot of work, yeah. Cause back in the day. By the end, we don't know how to do nothing. If it should be smaller, you're gon na. Do it like five students., You tryna get this point. Okay. Five students right., Keep it real. You know. Yeah, keep it real, smart and subtle, so you can. At least you don't have everyone. Everyone has your undivided attention. Foundation before or after the wig Hmm. It could be both. [, Ursula ] Okay.. I feel like if its a blonde wig, I use foundation, before. [ Kia, ] Okay., And I use it after.'cause, sometimes with like the blonde wigs they have like the white undertone. [ Ursula ] yeah.. It might look good when you're putting it on, but you know they eventually comes back. [ Ursula ] Got it., So you can use like a matte HD foundation. [ Urusula ] Okay., I like to use Ben Nye and I just dab like I get my shade And I just dab it a little bit. Just a little bit and just put it right on your lace and it like makes it look like skin yeah., [, Ursula ], Okay, all right. To pluck or not to pluck Ohh.. Oh, you got ta pluck., (, laughs, ). You got to pluck baby. What the pluck Okay, you got to pluck honey. (, laughs ). When do you know its enough plucking, When you know., You just have an eye for it. Okay. Like I feel like the more you do it you'll know. Like and I've plucked --. I have so many different plucking technique, but I in my class I teach like you know: basic. Plucking technique that works for anyone., So you would know. [, Ursula ] yeah., And what about -- Yeah y'all? Don'T see no bald spot.. What about bleaching knots? What is that? Can you tell us what that is ?'cause? Some of us don't know what that it. Bleaching knots is like one of the most important. it can make or break your wig. Okay.. If you over bleach, it you'll break it.. So what is the knot? What are we talking about when you say a knot? The knot is the little things that they use to like put the hair in the lace. Okay., Like you have to --, Attach it., Attach it yeah.. You got ta, tie a knot over to slip. Out. [ Kia, ] Okay., So the knot is what we bleach to basically make the lace. You know look like skin., So how do you stop it from like over processing like in that? You know Right ,'cause, sometimes yeah The orange-y, --, Red or orange., Sometimes red or orange. Well, it depend on the type of bleach. I like to use blue base, bleach.'cause that pulls more cooler zones and not warmer zones., And then I like to use 30 volume developer. And I use it. I let it sit on for about 15-20 minutes., And this is no matter the color of the wig Yeah Okay., no matter the color of your wig., But now with blonde 613. I don't bleach it at all.. I just tint it with like the foundation. Yes.. So you have a client she's dying for this.. She wants this wig to be put on today. She's coming she's rushing too.. She got there her head big, but the wig is small., But its a lace wig.. What do you do? Oh I've had situations like that. I record on set honey., (, laughs, ) and that celebrity had a big head, ( laughs ), I just didn't know I'm just being on the pictures like okay, it looked like normal size, but what I do is I get the wig right And like in this Area your area, I cut a slit. [, Ursula ] Yes. And that slit opens the wig out more. And even sometimes take the bends on the back. [ Ursula ] Come on tailor come on tailor. Right.. You know that wig. Tell them right honey., So we gon na take that luff thing out in the back they're nasty things.. Then you got like a little flip. And I had a client I aint good on names. [, Ursula ] Right.. I had to do it because her head was big honey. And I had to cut like two slits. Up in here and up in here on this side. And it fit perfectly. Any tips for slaying a beauty, supply store, wig Hmm., No heat., Don't put no heat On that thing. You're gon na look like bacon., (, laughs, ) Bacon is gon na. Stop you shining. Up to 400 degrees. 400 degrees, uh-huh. Just put a roller on you. Roll it up, and let that sit for an hour and just let it fall. So about how many wigs do you own Ooh, I own, you know what a lot. Can't even Number, Its drawer fulls.. Are you attached to them I'm attached to them., But you know what like I sometimes can detach myself from them. Like and then I'm the type of person like I love to slay wigs but at the same time its nothing like having a new fresh wig, honey. [ Kia ] Nothing like it., [, Alonzo, ], You're feeling so good. Right. So when do you know like to give it up, I guess like she's dead. Well, a lot of my wigs, never be dead.. So I'd be doing like these little wig drives. And I say the wig is half off come on and get it.. You know pull up your cash, you know Ching ching, ching, Yeah., (, laughs, ) And they come on in with cash honey.. I'M gon na make my deposit. Yes., And you know that the end., So what about wig upkeep? How do you keep up with your wigs? I would say: try to use as less heat as possible., Be very gentle with it., Don't be in there, just pulling it and doing all the type of stuff., And if your man is heavy handed, you know when you tryna make love, don't wear the wig on'cause. You know they sold $ 1000 apiece.. You know that's how much I'd be charging. So yeah that and then like use, sulfate-free shampoos on your wigs. And what about storing Just store it like, I would say, store it like on a wig hanger. Have a little closet for your wigs.. You know the wig has to go get to bed.. You need to get a satin bonnet or a scarf or anything like that. Yeah satin bonnet., So you heard that.. Well, you heard it here. First guys. The wig slayer himself., Make sure you take care of your wigs as if its your own hair., Don't forget to use the hashtag # TheHairShowBET, so you could part of these type of conversation. Lets get involved. And thank you so much Alonzo for coming on. The show. Thank you for having me. and what he got to show us all the tips and tricks on how to slay our very own wig. Okay.. Can you wait Ursula? I can't wait. I might to get sittin' on that chair too.. Can we go now Right? Y'All got ta watch. Watch and learn. All right, guys, ( upbeat music, )
