Knitting Help - Slow Motion German Twisted Cast-On

For very visual learners, an addition to my slow motion playlist. The German Twisted Cast-On is my go-to whenever I need a CO with extra stretch.

You can see my other slow-motion videos here:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=...

The needles I'm using in this video are Knitter's Pride Ginger. The yarn is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.

This video is part of my slow motion. Series. I'm gon na demonstrate the German twisted cast-on also called the old Norwegian cast-on., And it's pretty much my go-to for cast-on. That anytime, I need extra stretch.. It looks really good., It doesn't flare.. It does have a lot of give to it., But it is a little bit harder to work than a regular cast-on.. If you'd like to see my regular speed German twisted cast-on I'll, give you a link. Just click the little `` i' in the upper right-hand corner. I'll, also give you a link to my entire slow motion playlist.. This is playlist for very visual learners. People are finding it helpful to have things slowed down like this. And this technique, like I said, it's a few more steps, but it kind of ends up being a dance once you learn it., I hope slow mo helps.. Let'S go ahead and go slow, mo., I'm starting with a slipknot. If you're familiar with doing a long-tail, cast-on slingshot method without a slipknot, that's fine.! I'M gon na get myself into a slingshot position with the tail-end in front and the working yarn in back.. I'M going to go under both strands of my thumb and back through the first, the back one grab the yarn on my index finger and then under the loop on my thumb and backup.. I'M gon na do this a bunch of times so don't rewind yet. Back into the slingshot position. Under both back over the back one needle up grab the one from the index finger and through the loop on the thumb from the bottom up and then needle backup. Drop everything and tighten it up. Under both back over the back one needle up grab the one on the index finger through the loop on the thumb from the bottom over the back loop and tighten., So under over up grab under over up. Under over up grab. Under over up., Now that that's in your head, I'll, let you say it in your own head., [, 00:03:13 ], [, Silence, ], [, 00:03:33, ], Whoops., [, 00:03:35, ], [, Silence, ], [, 00:04:10, ] Take a look. And there's my cast-on.. Hopefully I gave you enough stitches there. In case you were following along, you could keep watching it over and over without rewinding.. I hope that helps visual learners. Good luck., [ 00:04:29 ]

GoodKnitKisses: Oh. My. Gosh! Girl, this is awesome. I really need to make on my needles and convert to the loom for everyone. Thanks for the visual. I was making some German short row socks on the loom to test the other day and the longtail on the loom, for that gauge, flared so bad! I hope I can do it justice. Have a great week ❤️ Kristen

Stephanie R: I am so very thankful that you did it so many times in a row specifically so we wouldn't have to rewind. It makes it very easy to practice without interruption and I haven't seen many other knitting tutorials that do this. Very clear instructions and easy to follow along. Thank you so much!

Donna Lawrence: OMG! These slo-mo tutorials are perfect! Thank you for recording them for us!

Karen Evans: I come back to this tutorial over and over again every time I cast on a new sock. Thank you so much for doing this and for repeating it so many times during the tutorial.

Jackie Ordway: Oh my goodness! I had watched several other videos and just COULD NOT get this cast on. Your rhythmic "Under-over-up etc." instruction had me casting on stitches within seconds! Thank you for a great tutorial, VeryPink Knits!

Helene Goldberg: Brilliant! I love the clarity of your voice, the close-up video, the slow-mo - it's all wonderful, thanks for this, so very helpful!

Lonnie Appleby: LOVE THIS! I especially love that you are doing the last part “through the loop” instead of bending the thumb down, because I’ve been doing it this way for awhile and was hoping I wasn’t botching it. Also, I LOVE the slip knot instead because now I do not get two stitches to try and join in the round on my itty bitty “0” sock needle! THANK YOU! You are my go-to gal!!!!

Cheryl Arlt: Thank you SO MUCH!!!!! I had not heard of this cast on method and needed to learn for a garment I'm getting ready to start. Your slow motion teaching is just what I needed!! Will check out more of your videos. Thanks again and have a nice weekend!!!!!

Laurie Panariello: Thank you so much for this video, very easy to follow, I finally got it after a few repeats

The Old Wolf: Awesome tutorials, thank you. The slow motion is so helpful!

JennyLeigh Jacobs: Thank you so much for these tutorials, +verypinkknits! I find myself coming back to your videos over and over for the clearest, most concise information. Thank you for giving me the confidence to tackle some techniques that otherwise would make some patterns seem inaccessible to me. Bravo!

Cate Mef: Clear, concise and wonderful. Thank you. I look forward to using this on my next pair of socks.

Jen H.: Thank you so much for creating this slow-mo video! I just found out about this cast-on method & wanted to try it to give some extra stretch for a larger-than-average hat for a customer. I was struggling with the written instructions and illustrations I had found online. This was so perfect, as I am a visual learner. Thank you again!!

Priscilla Wagner: Yay! I finally got it! I've been trying to figure out this CO and was getting very frustrated. Watching your slo-mo video was just what I needed. Thank you!

Elle Aiche: Such great timing! I needed a stretchy cast on for a new project this morning and BOOM! There it was! Thanks so much for the slow-mo detail and simple explanation.

kittycatfluffy: Thank you so much! I’m making a pattern for the first time in 6 years, and could not for the life of me remember how to do this cast on!

Random Llama: Thank you so much for the slow motion video, I have been trying to learn this cast on and finally understand it. It reminds me of motions used in Cat’s Cradle: A twisty ‘reach-in’ to grab a strand, and then back out the way you came in!

Merissa J: Love your videos. You have helped me so many times over the course of many projects!

Jane Mellowes: That’s fantastic and so clear. Thank you

bolshoi1959: Perfect timing. I just added this to my knitting journal as something to check out on your videos. Going to make this my go-to cast on. X

Judith Denise: Thank you, again and again thank you. I always come back to this video for my German twisted rib cast on. It is so helpful ❤️

Anne Loranger: Thank you thank you thank you! Whenever I pick a pattern and it specifies a cast-on that I either have never done or haven’t done in a while, I know I can count on your videos to explain them better than the pattern writer (or my book of cast ones & bind offs.)

Ruth Susan Scaccia: What a gift this video is - my brain (and my fingers) finally understand this cast on! Thank you!

Tia Burridge: Thank you so much for doing this video! I was stuck trying to learn from photos in a book and was getting frustrated, this video really helped!

PleiadianSister: Awesome video. Clean uncluttered background, not too much confusing unnecessary talking, clear, concise, you just gained a subscriber! Looking forward to watching your other videos. Thanks so much

salam irini Awad: I like this cast on, looks very uniform & tidy. Thanks so much for the tutorial.

carolsbitesandpieces: Great tutorial - love the SloMo. I have to CO 308 sts for a project. I think this technique will be firmly embedded in my memory.

G Parks: Thank you so much! Extremely helpful.

wcb_88: Thank you for this slow motion video of this head-on it really helped me learn how to do it.

Arleen Miller: Thank You so much for this video and slow motion.......Your always easy to understand

Lisa Villone: Thank you Staci. It was very helpful. Off I go, to make TAAT socks for my mom! Have a great day.

Andrea Short: Thank you! Thank you! Really helpful. It took a little while of concentration and had few goes and dummy runs and then it just clicked and I couldn't stop! Amazing. So pleased.

Nancy Thurber: Yay! It took a minute or two but I think I've got it! I'm keping your video up while I do the actual cast on for the hat I am making! Thanks!

Vicky McGee: Thank you so much for providing slow-mo videos! I find the German Twisted cast-on to be fun—a dance!

doug briscoe: I love your teaching videos.I am a fairly new knitter but have a passion for knitting socks.I prefer toe up on a circular needle but have made a pair on dpns.I was wondering have you ever made a sock where you s-k the complete bottom of sock after your toe increases .I have been doing s-k flap and trying to bring it up back of heel. Our winters are long and cold and I am trying to figure out a sturdy sock that will last longer..My socks are getting better looking but I am-not quite there yet.You. are a wonderful teacher.Thankyou so much for all your videos.Lynne

Dejah Danger Thoris: Okay, took a few tries but now I have a beautiful stretchy cast on. Thanks!

Lucille Reilly: Wowza! I already do this CO, but learned it another way, from a book. The book has this method, too, but I struggled to follow the instructions.. Gotta try this now; it should be faster! For anyone who needs to see this yet slower (I did), click or tap on the gear icon at the lower right corner of the screen to enter YouTube settings and you can change the playback speed. I also turned off the sound; the video alone is clear enough. So great that the stitches go on and on and on to really get a feel for how-to. Thank you!

OneCrochet TwoKnit: Thank you so much. This was excellent

Lynda Berman: I do this cast-on on two needles, removing the second when I start knitting. I find this gives it a little extra stretch, and it looks really good.

Grandma R: This helped tremendously. Thank you

Brittany Caviness: Great video! I really was struggling with this one from my book.

Erin Echlin: Thanks for another great tutorial! When you do a long tail cast on you estimate the tail by doing one wrap per one stitch cast on... this takes more yarn (thus the extra stretch) so how do you estimate the length of tail to leave?? Is there a good way to estimate the extra amount needed?

Nadine Zollner: Thanks to you this is my favorite cast on! Now my dilemma is which bind off to use that matches this in looks and stretch. Can you help with this? I’m knitting headbands, and the pattern designer suggested Jeny’s stretchy bind off. I find it is too loose, so I need something better. Thank you!

tainya ross: Thank you the tutorial!

Mary Millerick: Thanks so, so much! That was just AWESOME!!

Erika Cornejo: Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Best tutorial on this CO ever!

Pam Koseck: Thank you, thank you for this slow mo version! I finally GOT IT!

TheBatLadyKnitz: Thank you for this. Just love your slowmo videos

Cas Wucher: Thanks so much! How much of a tail should we allow when casting on for a pair of socks!

Ellemo: Love your videos. Thanks for all of them.

Deb Eade: Woo Hoo...... finally got it.....now I can start the next [1st] part of my/your pattern. THANK YOU.....love your slo mo vids...... Big hugs......

Ariel Miller: This video taught me this technique. Thank you! You gained a sub.

Family for Jesus: Very helpful! Thank you!

Patrick: took me a few, but go it! I kept getting lost in the thumb twist at the end. thank you!

Alba Besson: Thank you!!! Your slow motion videos are a godsend!

Dianna Riley,: Okay, I'm lost with this one! I'll try it, but I'm trying to learn to knit continental holding the yarn in the left hand! This is my new goal!

Jennifer Taylor: Thanks again Staci for a wonderful tutorial. I have a question that doesn't pertain directly to this video so i hope you see this. I just finished a beautiful baby blanket knit with dk weight pima cotton. What would be the best method to block this?

Sandra Millar: Very helpful. Thank you!

Rachael Des Lauriers: Hello! Thank you for this. Question are the steps a bit different than your previous Old Norwegian cast on?

Laura Hill: Wonderful video! Thank you so much

Daisy Swaffer: I had to watch it twice but I nailed it now, this was perfect. Thank you!

Meranda Bubbles: Well done. Thanks

Haana-SikSik Sammurtok-Lavallee: Great tutorial, I just finished casting on and am now doing a knit/purl ribbing neckline from you "Toddler Sweater 3-Ways" pattern. I dropped one of the german cast ons. How can I pick it up?

Jane Weller: While watching this video I was thinking that it would take a lot of practice to do it right and to remember the moves without having a video on, but it took only one rewind to get it right. Thank you for the slow-mo. Is this cast-on suitable for all kinds of knitted things?

Annette: Thank you so much!! I GOT IT

katphyre: So helpful!

Holly Spagnola: I get so confused with this method! So happy for the slow motion but I think I need to put it on a continuous loop casting on 192 stitches. I should know it by the end.

Mark Du: Great video!!! Thank you so much!

Kakika2612: Trank you so much for this tutorial! Finally got it! :-D

Elizabeth De Long: Thank you for these slow mo videos! Do you have one for twisted cable cast on???

Mayavata25: Oh my. My head hurts. A little bit harder?!? That's a fact. It figures that the only fingerless glove pattern that I liked that was easy had this crazy mess as a cast on. Thank you very much for the slow motion. If you could have made it even slower, I would not have complained. Hoping my knitting expert neighbor knows how to do this, so I can pick her brain.

Jennifer Parker: So clear, precise, and well-paced. I love feeling confident about how to do this beautiful cast on method. Much appreciated!

Susan Averello: I got it after about 3 or runs of the video. Left handed - so it will be backwards for me just like the long tail cast on. I have got to train my self to hold the sling shot in my left hand but I keep messing up doing it right handed.

L. Leitz: Great tutorial demonstrations! I also viewed the link you mentioned to the tutorial dated Dec. 22, 2011. Your demonstration of the cast-on is different for the position of the thumb. But this video, and the previous 2011 demonstrations look like the same stitch result. Is that correct?

akarpowicz: I'm left handed, so will have to watch in the mirror. Thanks. All your instruction vids are so clear.

Ro Bosco: Thank you so much!

Queenmom313: I love your videos! The best!

Heather Haigh: Wow, I must try that when I have time to do it without chucking it out of the window in exasperation lol

Sharon Hogan: If you are following a panel patten, how do you make sure you stay on the right row, im finding it hard to remember which one im on?

K J Russell: This is my favorite CO!

Ann Kathryn Scott: How long of a tail should I start with? The beret i am doing calls for 96 of this stitch and i seem to run out of my tail? Can i just tie on and extend the tail?

Patricia Woosley: HELP!! I have to do this for 309 stitches. Do I need a l-o-n-g tail like a long-tail cast on, or how much do you suggest? Do I need to do the wrap around the needle estimate, or does anyone have any ideas on the length allowed on size 7 needles?

Manel knits: Thank you Staci, and Nice haircut

Pamela Sertich: Could I use the Chinese Waitress cast on in place of this? What is the difference in use. Thanks

missree1995: Thank you!

Pam Myers: Thank you!

Rivka Hobden: Thank you, thank you!

Maria Hovden: Maybee I've been doing this cast on wrong for years? or maybe I use a similar technique with a different name I don't know. I catch the thread on the index finger from the underside and back through the thumb hole. More fluid motion. Does anyone know if my cast on technique has a name?

Soile Koskela: This is little more complicated what I'm just to do. Similar start but less steps.

Ginmars1: This feels like when you grab the back loop and start forward you are undoing everything you did when you started on the thumb... am I crazy maybe?? LOL

Nicol McFadden: Can you suggest a good matching bind off? For example if I was making a cowl.

Samantha Murphy: Thank you.

Crazy book lady: Wow.... What yarn are you using in the video?

Courtney Gamble: I could swear I am doing this step by step but my tail is getting used up (shrinking) and I can not figure out why?

deenpac: How long should the tail be for this method?
