Wood Hair Accessories

Here are several hair clips and rings you can mix and match. Easy to make and a great gift idea. If you don't have a lathe, you could just use some dowels.

Howto & Style

Hi welcome to woodworking for mere mortals, I'm Lillian. These are hair accessories. This is a complete hair accessory system. I guess these pieces can all be mixed and matched in a lot of different ways. I'M gon na start by turning these pins on my lathe, and you know what that means. It means a turning montage now I think most turning montages. The obligatory music is yakety sax yakety sax, but I decided not to go with yakety sax for this turning montage. Instead, I thought I would treat you to a reading from the Marin County California phone book, accompanied by a tease, video game, music, Donna, Oh Dean, Island, see aanenson, Shelley odds, Denis Aaron, Jonathan Aeryn, Sun Einar, our shine gerald pasa rude, Denis Abad, all read our ocelli. That'S a long one deidre, a BIOS Ruby upon Mirta, a Vaska Charles Abacha, a Hugo of Juarez, Alfred, J, a bio M, a bio Nancy, a bio Mohammed Abbasi. I like saying that one Muhammed Abbasi beatrice abbott a.s.a.p, William Abbey, William R Abbey, don't get those confused a Abbot a so that pretty much sucked right. When I was at the very very end of it, I had it all sanded down and everything, and I thought well I'll - take a little bit more away from it and for some reason, my chisel caught on a little nick or something I don't know, and the Thing just broke, so I got to do another one, so I've already got a blank in here, and this is a smaller blank. This time I think that'll help this was. It was really big. It was like that cartoon. You know where they take that the whole tree and they turn it down into like one toothpick. Maybe that was my problem. I don't know Claire, I'm Brielle in a bodily masu Nia M, bull ha ha sim whoo! That'S a mouthful! Geoffrey! Ah, boo laughs me try that again, Geoffrey ah huuuh Nancy, a Boucher, I'm Nancy, ah boo char! Well, no breaking this time. The only thing I need to do is just try to round over this top part which was cut flat and so I'll just do that. On my digital, I'm cutting out these pieces kind of free hand on my bandsaw. I don't have any kind of template and sanding them smooth using my disc sander and the drum sander on my drill press now I just need to make a couple of holes that go all the way through there so that this pin can go through. So it's kind of an odd angle. So what I'm gon na start with is just a very small bit in my drill and just go straight down. Now I'm going up to a little bit larger bit and I'll just enlarge the hole and go up to an even larger bit, and I can test that out. Make sure that goes through. Just fine here are all the pieces I've made and I put a coat of spray lacquer on all of them. Now, let's go back to Lily and she will show us how to use these stick now. Here is just using two of the smaller sticks. Okay, another demo go for it Wow, so hard up right down that thingy. This thing goes over.

ThisWoodwork: Yay you are back on the lathe Steve! I was turning today actaully, it had been a while.

TeacherPhilEnglish: the backing track was incredible

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: Cool! This would also be a fun project to laminate a bunch of different woods together before cutting them out to look like inlay.

D B Pawlan: Very cool! I like to see projects which utilize the various tools in your shop. Do you use a scroll saw for any projects? Bought one the other day and am loving it.

Michael Agate: Nice job Steve. Very unique project!

alphared11: this is my all-time favorite channel! keep it up steve!

crystalrocks: I've never seen a circle one like that..it's my favorite! They're all nice but that one is so unique to me :) Thank you for making the video and I thought your montage phone book reading/8-bit video game music was fantastic...it made me laugh :P

Woodeso's Guitar Mods: Nice, my aunt used to wear these when I was a kid. They're cool again! Though, and this is just a question, aren't the pins supposed to go through a piece of leather? Generally there's an image scored into the leather. Suppose if the wood is flexible enough, it doesn't matter? You could also, etch an image into the wood and burn it in?

Corrie Lamprecht: Very nice! I mean the wooden ideas for hair. I have a few very nice pieces of wood with exotic detail laying around here waiting for just the right idea - this is perfect. Will send you some pics!

Pipe42: I built a very simple router table using an old car jack as the lift, it was very quick and easy to build and works great.

browntroutfisherman: very timely - I was just thinking yesterday about making some wooden hair clips/rings for an upcomming fair. Have you made any ladies neck scarf clips/rings - maybe that could be next Friday's project ?

biffisawshome: Steve, when you were using the last largest drill bit on the curved plate, and you had your hand under it, I thought of last week when I did the same thing with a piece of plastic, and then the 1/2" bit caught, jetted forward, and ripped a good sized chunk out of my palm. I'm usually not one for "safety first", but you had me shaking in my boots, haha.

TeacherPhilEnglish: and by incredible, I mean very credible

caitlin ت: this was absolutely hilarious and informative! :D

yoshaki: Cool idea. Thanks for sharing.

Andrew Sparrow: hehe! have to say I was thinking the same thing... the goal was to find the largest size bit of wood and make the smallest item :) but hey this is one of the reasons we watch! :)

David Loew: Is that the smallest diameter that those hair sticks can be turned? Also, can you hollow out what could be a small bowl and then just part it off above the bottom of the bowl so you'd have basically a bottomless bowl you could then band saw in half for the pin catchers? Just curious.

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: It's a Shopmaster, made in the 1940s. My dad bought it new. I'll show it in a video this weekend on my other channel.

patskywriter: I really like this! The only problem is, I can imagine people wearing these hair accessories getting pulled out of line at the court building or airport. Or maybe it's just me. o_O

Lamar Sineath: What type of wood do you suggest for these?

crumblenaut: Nice idea for some scraps! Thanks

Po Woodworker: Is that your daughter having interest in what you do?  That is fantastic, family support is vital..........good to see.

Francisco Corona: Nice job, wel done

TheRustaman: Awesome once again.

Melanie Niemann: Someone gave me something similar to the last combo she tried on, and I have not been able to figure out how to use it. The distance from the edge of the curved piece combined with its own weight makes it hard to get it to hold something sturdily. I was so excited to see how she did it and then it was cut out of the video. Oh well, on with the search. I'm not even sure what it's called.

alanx999: Steve, you crack me up!!! You can probably hear me laughing all the way from the UK?

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: OMG, You are right! Turning on the English captioning is hilarious! You HAVE to try it!

nervmichnich: HAH! Now I know my girlfriend's birthday present. Thank you, Steve!

Shadoglare: For some reason I'm thinking you might want to add a disclaimer along the lines of "placing your fingers 1/8" away from a disc sander, band saw blade, or router blade is not recommended" :)

Graeme w: Hi steve I thought you wood model them on your own hair although your model was braw, wait till the saftey police see you drilling near your hand you will get it bad, I watched a few router table lift vids and while i like yours, I saw one using a metal hand wound car jack which I thought was easier to do, it sat on a shelve under the router , keep up the gid work young man, Graeme.

Wouter d.B.: Japanese style, love it!

Soma Samsara: Pretty work And pretty hair look like my hair too C:-

Dan: Loved the poetry readings with the 80s video game music. Where can i get a poetry book like that?

garbageghost: @stevinmarin just curious about your lathe, what make is it and how old approximately. I like old machines, my lathe is a Wallace from 1912.

Johnny Kaphahala: what kind of wood is that?? thanks in advance

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: Any kind of hardwood. The bands are pretty thin.

kikenu2: Is it possible to anything else to mdf besides paint?

Tim Johnson: That as a lot of wood to waste turning that hair pin and also why it blew up. You had huge amounts of wood on either end and that small spindle had to turn the chunk on the tail stock end, plus withstand the pressure of being turned between centers - it eventually gave up. I turn Midlands lace bobbins for my wife (like a guy can't have too many tools, a lace maker can't have too many bobbins). I turn at 4000 rpm and start with a blank no thicker than 3/8" mounted in a Jakob's chuck. The tail stock only keeps it centered, it doesn't add pressure. They are finished with friction polish then I part at the tail stock end first, then from the headstock. The chuck doesn't come out but I keep the tool rest overlapping the chuck just in case. I've turned these hair pins and other small diameter stuff the same way and don't have to do the finish sanding. Lots less to sweep up, too. When you come to Santa Cruz to visit your son, look me up and I'll give you a demo. BTW, the CAPTCHA on your website kept rejecting entry so I posted my comment here.

David Catriel: I give it two days before this one shows up on Ted's catalog. Hey, he's now up to 16,001 plans on one convenient CD !

Brett Miner: Nice Vid Steve!

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: Heh...yeah my thought was that lathe montages are always as interesting as reading from a phone book, so why not just, well...

jrmichel: Great! Now I can justify my lathe investment to my wife. I hope she uses the sticks in her hairs instead thru my neck.

Guillaume Breton: i was thinking the same thing. couple milimeters below the center of the piece should give you a better angle of attack

Dan Poltinnik: Hey Steven can you make a video that tells peaple on how to make a cool thing with only hand tools with no electric tools. (Like so he can see this pls)

J K: I waited all week for this? Lol just kidding keep 'em coming.

The1andOnly1ToB: Looks like you were below center. If you lower the tool rest it would probably have prevented the "catch" that broke it

Jane d’Arc: If you sell I would like to buy.

Adam Swindell: Mr. Ramsey, that cartoon you were referring to is a vintage cartoon called "Crazy Town" where everything is pretty much backwards.

HanyouxFromxHell: :( I was hoping you would do some wood bending for those :(

oceannavagator: My wood has no hair, maybe you should sand more......Oh, I get it!

Khether: Dude... you just turned a 8 feet wide log into a pin 1/100 inch in width?!

JuryDutySummons: I wondered why you didn't quarter that block you started with.

quint150: Well, I didn't see this project coming. LOL.

Aleksandr Goldyrev: you can make samesame by hand tools only, but 1 vid will take 1 month in this case =D

Kyle Earl: I like your sand paper @ 2:28 Haha

Aleksandr Goldyrev: 3:42 looks extreemly unsafe 8)

João Victor G. Costa: Best BG ever.

Jim Crossan: Band saw??

Felisha Wild: Steve, I think you should sing your phone book entries instead of just reading it. :-D

LNCXO12: am i the only one who got nervous when he started to drill in toward his hand?

Cozzmos: Good for slaying vampires too... especially the broken one.

psyhodad100: hahahah nice one :)

C. B. Alan: Only one problem. You forgot to show me how to make beautiful hair.

mieguistumas: I never understood, how the hell hair stays like that, when only some sticks are holding them.

Krishna Rao: Super

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: Not sure. I haven't lived there in over 10 years.

Rauno Leppik: I wanted to turn on slow motion, because I've seen some of the video that it can be done, but it was not on the video clip, but I found titers when to turn it on I got a lot to laugh, try it yourself. best of all, it was how it was translated names

woply: I hope you wore protective eyewear.

Myxpykalix: bring back "yakity sax" at least i could be reminded of Benny Hill.

n3qdz: Steve......you pulled your kid out of school to demo your project.......Mom's not gonna be happy!

revieck: I watched that WB cartoon also!

Skitch777: Holy cow!! you said my name Just kidding

Maxid1: Why does this video look so familiar?

Hip Hop: I LOLed when he said Muhammad Abasi

Big Fat Tony's: deja vu. I never forget a pretty face

girrrrrrr2: Dang you!!!

Allan Henson: Bloody hell man. Weres ya health and safty! I could not look when you were drilling in the palm of your hand!!! Have a nice day u all, as you lot across the pond say :-)

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: The reading is painful enough to listen to!

Phoenixthemodder: Man, there must be a lot of Muslims or Arab people in San Francisco.

Robb's Homemade Life: here is how to memorize and repeat back an entire page from the Miami Florida phone book Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia Jose Garcia

KevKevAllen: I feel like my ears have been raped....

klamberext: 1 angry bold guy.

Susan Davis: Is that your daughter?

Steve Ramsey - Woodworking for Mere Mortals: First! haha!

Greg: hi mute button
