Our latest attachment for the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer hides flyaways in one pass. For the smooth, shiny finish of a salon blow dry at home.

Developed alongside hair stylists, our Dyson engineers studied the professional techniques when it came to creating a smooth finish and taming flyaways and frizz on the surface of the hair. They understood it was a complicated skill that's hard to replicate at home.

So they set about designing a tool that could help mimic a stylists' result. For smooth, shiny hair, with the flyaways tucked underneath and the longer hair on top.

Chris OSBORN HEAD OF CATEGORY HAIRCARE, So with all of these products we've changed the way that people style their hair and people have responded really well to that, but we are continually trying to improve them. As well as looking for opportunities that we haven't yet gone. Into. STEPHEN COURTNEY SENIOR CONCEPTS DIRECTOR, One of the biggest frustrations in hair styling is flyaways. SANDRA LUP, LEAD DESIGN ENGINEER. You can have a really great style, but if you have flyaways, that's going to really compromise the end look.. So it is something that people all over. The world always mention as one of the top frustrations. AMY JOHNSON GLOBAL LEAD. Stylist Flyaways are shorter hairs that don't align with the longer hairs. STEPHEN COURTNEY. There can be broken hairs and also it can just be caused by static as well. AMY JOHNSON, To remove flyaways in the salon. I would need to align the airflow directly with the brush and push the hairs underneath, As you can see, all the shorter hairs peeping through there. STEPHEN COURTNEY. So I was totally amazed of what the professional was able to do with this model's hair. It was absolutely incredible – the before and after – and I thought we've just got to mechanise that, because it looked quite difficult to do. And certainly difficult for someone to do on themselves. AMY JOHNSON To be able to keep them both parallel to each other. And in the right position with both hands moving at the same time can be quite a challenge.. I cannot get that angle myself at home., STEPHEN COURTNEY. The magic is that the stylist used a brush., So we naturally thought we could replicate with a brush.. However, what we found was the brush in some cases could pull the broken hairs back out again.. We know that brushes do damage, so we decided to remove the brush element from this and use airflow alone. SANDRA LUP. Of course, at Dyson we are specialists in airflow. So it just felt natural that we were going to use the Coanda effect to solve the flyaway problem. DAVE, TIBBETTS DESIGN MANAGER. You can see here that we've actually just got a concentrator, that's been glued onto a barrel and the airflow is directed downwards and onto this surface and that creates the Coanda effect.. We noticed that there was something really interesting happening at that point – where the airflow was actually separating., STEPHEN COURTNEY. It holds onto the long hairs and lets go of the short broken hairs.. We also created a secondary flow that pushes those shorter, broken hairs. Chris OSBORN, It's very hard to see air, so we use computer to be able to simulate where the air is moving. And that allows us to optimise every surface.. So every surface on each attachment is there for a particular purpose. It'S doing a particular job.. If you can't control the air, you can't control the hair, and if you can't control the hair, you can't generate a good style. On the Schlieren rig. We could actually see the airflow. It was no longer invisible. Through that process. We realised that this section of the product wasn't really doing anything., So we basically we actually just cut that off. And that's where we ended up with that iconic shape where we've got that back section missing and it's this kind of hook, profile. AMY JOHNSON. So the big benefit of the Flyaway attachment, So you don't need two hands. You don't need to worry about where the airflow is., Even though our products look different and work different. Ultimately, they still need to perform brilliantly – that's what people want. The number one expectation of all of our customers is a brilliantly performing product.
