How To Use A Hair Stick

An instructional video on how to create a bun, a messy bun or a french roll using a hair stick.

Hi there, my name is Sarah Edie and I'm the creator of sticks and stones. My workshop in the foothills of Alberta produces very durable handmade hair sticks in three different widths and sizes from maple to accommodate all the hair types out there. This is my mini. I created it for kids, and these are created for very, very small buns, very young girls or women with extremely fine hair. The medium stick is what I use in my hair. I have finer hair, my buns only about this big and it beautifully fits the size of my bun Crean here uses the large stick. She'S got very thick hair. She needs that extra taper to help hold that hair in. I brought a couple of girls to help. You learn how the hair sticks work today and to me, hair sticks can be very beautiful, but their true beauty lies in their functions. So for me the beauty is the ease in which women can do their hair. So today I will teach you how to do a French roll, the bun and two mini buns. So we're going to start low gather the hair into a low ponytail. A common mistake that women make when they are attempting to create a French roll is that they twist out and then lift the roll up, but here at sticks and stones. We highly suggest and recommend that you twist directly up and to finish off the roll. Then we just tighten and twist that coil until it's nice and secure so now that we've created the upward roll, we've also created a crack in which this hair will be placed into we pinch the roll take those ends and firmly tuck them in underneath that crack That we've created the sticks, job is to hold all that in place. This here I could leave out, but I think I'll just put a little bit up a slight messing of the hair. So now we want to lock everything in place that we folded under. We are going to push the stick up through the very top edge of the roll push it out. A couple of inches touch the scalp and without lifting it from the scalp, we are going to reverse the direction of the stick and push down through the bottom of the roll you we're going to do a bun in Theresa's hair. She has very fine hair, so we're going to use one of our medium sticks. It suits the size of her bun beautifully so with the button gather it into a ponytail in the middle to the top half of your head. There'S our ponytail we're going to twist that hair a couple of inches out to form a coil. This coil is going to be twisted around to form the top half of the bun. Now this is the most important part of the bun, as this is where the hair stick goes in and it locks everything that is brought in behind that first coil. So now that we've brought the ends in around we've created our button, we are going to push the stick up through the very top edge push it out about an inch and a half to two inches touch the scalp reverse direction and back down through the bottom Of the button, so this is Layla and on Layla we are going to demonstrate how to do two little mini buns. So for the two buns I'm going to do a nice tidy bun on this side, then I'm going to do a nice messy bun on this side to show you the difference of the two bun types once again to go over what we've learned gather your hair Into a ponytail and twist out a couple of inches to form a nice tight coil, this coil will be twist it around to form that first secure top half of the bun being integral, as that is where the stick goes to lock in everything that you bring In behind that, first loop so really focus on bringing it in behind we'll just leave those little playful ones. Now that we've created a nice flat roll push, the stick up through the very top edge, extend it out. A couple of inches touch the scalp and back down through the bottom of the bun. Now we are going to do more of a little a little messy bun. So we're going to do the first nice twist of that hair to create that first top half of the bun, but now, instead of bringing it all tidy around, let's just give it a little pop give it a little shake the more layered your hair is the Messier, it's going to get it's going to pop out a few little fun layers for Layla, so there's our bun, and now I'm just going to do exactly what I did on the left up on the top edge nice long reach touch the scalp and back down Through the bottom of the bun, I'm just going to create the same look on this side so that we can get a feel for that messy, look once again up scoop and down, and this relay that creates a very secure hairstyle, with no damage to that young. Fragile hair and it's safe, it's nice and short: it's not going to poke anyone that I or a playmate of any kind. So this is my little double bun. So, let's practice and be patient as we learn that French roll or the bun and join us on our website hair, stick ca for more detailed information. You

Navi _: I always thought my hair was too fine for hair sticks, but I watched your tutorial and in about 40 minutes I was able to do basic buns! I'm still practicing the French roll, thank you this is a very helpful tutorial!

MaiCohWolf: Thank you so much! My dad got me a two-pronged hair stick for Christmas ( I have really thick hair) and now I can finally wear it! I'm so excited! I've never done anything fun with my hair before!

Kateřina Petráková: I love it!!! It made me crazy to redo my bun with the stick again and again... Now I see what I was doing wrong and my bun doesn't fall down anymore!! Thank you very much!!!!

Aradia Nista: Beautiful!! I finally know how to use hair sticks properly now and within a few seconds my hair is up! Thank you ever so much!!!

Julianna Morin: So simple and so elegant! Thanks again for the lovely tutorial and visit at the Craftshow today! :)

Merrida100: You make this look so easy!  I have such fine and thinning hair (you can see my scalp through it), that if I pull the hair back tight, I look bald.  So I rely on using a clasp to sort of "fluff" the hair up.  Seems lots of hair tutorials work best if you have lots of hair to work with.  I think the sticks you make are very pretty.  Wish that you sold them online.

LexaHyioko: This video was really helpful! =D I've had a couple of hair chopsticks around for longer than I can remember, but I never really learned how to do any long-lasting hairstyle with them. My hair is incredibly thin and slippery (and layered, most of the time) and I never got a hold of it; I can hardly make a ponytail! (Yeah, that's how bad it is and how bad I am at manipulating it. XD) With this video, although the hairstyles were all very simple and basic, it was thoroughly explained and made me realize most of the mistakes I was making in my many attempts to achieve this look. Also, as I was training a few hairstyles, I heard a few snap sounds on my hair, so I got really afraid of breaking the strings. With all of these tips in mind, I'll keep practicing and see if I can get a really secure and good looking hairstyle that I'm not ashamed to wear outside of the house! ^.^ Thanks a ton!

IllusionEverything: I never thought it would be so easy! Thank you!
