If your hair gets big and poofy instead of wet and saturated in water, i want you to do this, get a cup at room, temperature, water and we're going to add your hair to this. This is going to test your hair's ability to absorb moisture, which is way more important than your curl pattern. Knowing this lets us know what products we should use on our specific porosity so that they penetrate the cuticle and add moisture to the hair. Add it to the top of that cup we're going to see if it stays on the top middle or bottom if it stays on the top it's low porosity. If it goes to the middle, it's medium porosity and if it goes all the way down to the bottom, it's high porosity three minutes is all you need to see. Mine stayed right on the top, so that means it's low porosity. I need products that open the cuticle so that i can go in with moisture to retain my length, i'm going in with prpg beauty's exfoliating shampoo, i'm shampooing one strand of hair, i'm going to go ahead and rinse it off and then i'm going to dry completely I'Ll add it back to the water and, as you can see, it is completely submerged and the cuticle is open ready to receive product hope. This helps

Jessica Elliott: You taught me more in 30seconds than most people on here have taught me in a 30min video smdh thank you

CAAJDJ: “I’m shampooing one strand of hair” … baby that’s all ppl be working with these days after lace damage anyway

JusTika: I’ve learned so much from you in this short amount of time!! Now I can’t wait to try my little strand of hair and see what it does! This will definitely save me money on some of these useless overpriced natural hair care products that be trying to charge you $15 for a useless jar of nonsense! Thank you girl!!

Janina Barrozo: Im so impressed with what i learned and the fact she was able to still keep her hair strand after the whole process

lexip396able: First of all, this girl deserves way more recognition. This is a video I needed to see.

Roxanne Hawkins: Thank you so much for empowering me with this knowledge. You have spread true joy to many!!! Blessings to you Nikki! ❤️

The Jessica Renee: Hairstylist here. One thing I want to point out is that the hair used was from a brush which means it has build up on it from previous product and sitting inside the brush. This test should be done on clean hair. After the one strand of hair is shampooed it then good to the bottom. This is correct is high porosity, but that’s too high. At this point the cuticle is so open that it does not have the ability to retain any moisture because the cuticle is wide open and left open. The objective is a slightly raised cuticle which is a normal cuticle or “medium porosity”. This is the best position for s cuticle because It’s open enough to receive yet closed enough to keep it in. The curlier the hair the more porous the hair naturally is because the cuticle is unable to lay flat dir to the coils so a shampoo for low porosity hair shouldn’t be used on most curly textures.

💋LUVLEE💋: I'm floored how simple you made this but so important I've literally tried everything on my hair it stay so dry no matter what I do thank you Soo much for making this so simple to understand ❤️

Aniya Newton: “I’m shampooing one strand of hair ” *Girl wha-* *Edit* I WAS GONE FOR ONE MONTH WHAT THE HECK- HOW DID I GET SO MANY LIKES!?!?!?!?*

NutElla 🇺🇦: What I’m wondering is how she managed to wash, shampoo, and dry that strand of hair without loosing it

niljaia88: Yess learned this 8 years ago in Cosmetology school! This this is one of the many reasons why we need to stop listening to YouTube University's advice on Curl patterns and consult with someone who's actually licensed and can make sense of Natural Hair questions. I teach all of my clients about porosity, texture and density not focusing on "Curl Patterns" & what styles & products you can and can't use!

CaSaundra Jolliff TV: Wow! FINALLY someone explained it simple, direct, and understandable. THANKS-A-MILLION, SIS!!!

Smash-a Dawned: What’s so crazy is that years ago when I did this test, I noticed that my hair would be on the top for a while and then drop. I thought I wasn’t doing the test right. Over time I would just give my hair time to absorb water and that is what this video shows me!!! Awesome!

Rhianna Barrett: I love how this works for all hair. Pattern or not. If you have fine hair that gets weighed down by product. LET THIS ENLIGHTEN YOU TOO. Not just waves, curls, kinks, and coils. This is good knowledge. Also, products should go in soaking wet hair to be soaked up and do their job properly. I love this. More!

Skully: “Hope this helped” ma’am you saved my life, I’ve never understood how to figure out my porosity till now

Ursweetplace: This video needs to be shown in EVERY cosmetology class. In seconds she has demonstrated what ladies have been trying to figure out for decades. Salute!

Shernell Joseph: This is the best and most thorough hair porosity explanation I've ever seen, thanks sis, I'm about to test rn

Islandprincess Castle: Yes, ofcourse this helps!!! THANK YOU!!! I just went natural and I needed this so much

BKMC03: THIS IS AMAZING!!! This will help with my son’s hair so much! The struggle is real! THANK YOU!

mscardioqueen: That did help. I had no idea there were shampoos that opened the cuticle to receive moisture. Thank you!

Brittany E: Helpful, scientific, and cool. We need more vids like this!

Ashley: As a pro hairstylist- this girl deserves a medal for this knowledge and for sharing her knowledge with the world

Char lovely: Thank YOU!!!! I WAS TODAY OLD WHEN THIS MADE SENSE!

l8dymzchf: I've been needing to know this for like 10 yrs. Thank you for being so thorough!!! I appreciate this!!!

Shirley Hardley: Simplicity is genius. I have fallen asleep trying to listen to all the explanations of hair porosity. This explanation was simply genius. Thank you:)

The L-Boogie: Great information!! Thank you, now I know what I've been doing wrong. Bless you!

Naturally Kish: Yes! I did the same with me and my 12 yr old daughter's hair! She's low porosity and I'm high porosity!

Muneerah Abdusshahid: My first teachings about this were that when testing porosity you actually need to use a clean strand of hair to fully simulate how your hair naturally absorbs moisture because the product on your hair can block the water from entering your follicle. If tested with an oily or dirty strand, it is possible for high porosity hair to mimic lower porosity hair if the strand cuticles is properly coated and sealed with product or buildup

Chinyelu Udeh: Someone should have just said this all this while!! I've jotted this down and I'm spreading the gospel. Thanks girl!!

Sahara AP: As frustrating low porosity hair can be it actually is a blessing. You use less products and when you find your holy grail just stick with it and I promise you’ll achieve anything.

Taesha Renee: BEST explanation and demonstration of hair porosity EVER!!! To go so far as to demonstrate the use of the correct hair product and intended results...EXCELLENT!!!‼️

Yolonda Tyson: Absolutely loved your presentation I definitely finally learned today about absorbing moisture ❤️

Kimberly Taylor: I’ve went natural before it was in style . And it took me the longest to figure out what works for my hair thank god for you sharing this test because it changed my hair completely

doyoureadme?: As a straight haired mama with a curly headed baby..thank you for this lesson

Francine Smith: I did this, forgot I was doing it, went back like an hour later AND MY HAIR WAS STILL FLOATING. Much love to my curly, textured, lo-pro ladies out there.

Natural4Ever: I finally got it. Thank you for making this video simple for everyone to follow.

SxulSisters: Every time I wash my hair, I get REALLY curly and just curls up and gets short. My hair is longer than my shoulders snd when it curls up, it’s higher than my neck! Thank you so much for this!! This helped a lot

Emily Cornetet: First off, your hair is amazing!! I have curl, too, but I’m Caucasian and constantly trying to better my curls. Done are frizzy, some are more straight, etc. I’m sure this has to do with product and highlights/bleach/color, as well. But trying to find the right products is a nightmare and costly. Is this true for all hair types/ethnicities? If so, I hope I can follow this trick and have an easier time finding products that work for me! Thanks for posting!

Zen your stalker: THIS IS… I NEEDED THISS LATELY IVE BENE DECIDING TO DO MY LIFE A FAVOUR ABD START TAKING CARE OF MYSELF, WELL MY HAIR AND IDK HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR HAIR IS HIGH OR LOW POROSITY SO THANK YOUUU

Stacie Rose: OMGOODNESS thank you for this video! I've been struggling with keeping my daughter's 4C hair moisturized, you're a God send!

mystacob81: Out of all of the hair videos that I have watched over the past 2 years, this by far has to be the most educational video I have seen.

LaFlacs: I love how you explain porosity. Makes it easier to understand.

The Fun Aunt: Note: wash hair with clarifying shampoo before doing this! I made that mistake and realized my high porosity hair was loaded with product. Once I stripped it, my next hydration treatment made my hair INCREDIBLY soft and moisturized!

Brandi Jefferson: One of the best pieces of advice for natural hair that I have ever seen! Amazing!

hello thankyou: omg thank you! you did more for me in 30 seconds than the HUNDREDS of hair guru videos ive watched to try to fix my dry hair that wouldnt take my leave in products and treatments

SSD: Thank you for this educational video!! I will do this for my twin daughters❤

CommentBot: I really liked the demonstration. I’m going to try this with my hair cause it is very dry. Edit: I kept expecting it to sink but it did not sink. Not even a little. I am not black so I have a different hair type but I suppose the porosity is still low. I guess I need different shampoo :(

Clémentine: Great demonstration, can't explain and show that better!!! Thank you.

Leah Mason: Thank you. I needed this video when I first transitioned back to natural. Took me a becoming a product junkie before I learned how to treat my low porosity hair... and I'm still learning

MichiganFresh 0013: Holy cow THANKVYOU SO MUCH!!! I'm a white woman, had trouble with dry fragile hair my whole life and nothing ever worked. I just learned my hair has low porosity and here I spent my whole life thinking my hair was just fragile. Seriously, not one cosmetologist has ever given me this info.

Paula Lewis: I have so much respect for you and all you do.. I have some of the worse hair.. I go through 8 to 10 bottles of conditioner a month just to try to moisturize my hair..

- Exotic (* - * )-: GIRL THANK YOU You’re truly a sign from heaven

sadandtatted: You just helped out so many struggling naturalista’s THANK YOU

Hope Adler: I have a curl pattern of about a 3B/C and I never knew about that hair strand test! I’ve been wondering about my porosity for a long time now!

kittycat2018: Wow! Thank you for the visual showing what low porosity hair should do after using the correct products for your hair's porosity level.

The Harmony Hour: Wow thank you cause this is my first time truly understanding what low med and high porosity means…. Definitely needed this in 2011

Kimberly Turner: Best explanation of this I've seen. Thank you!

Princess Treasure: yes! the best way to “fix” your curl pattern is to solve the root issue, being moisture and elasticity!

Chenai Kanenungo: It has been years! And none of these YouTubers managed to explain this. Thank you

Paris: You are a life saver I always have been so confused about hair porosity now I know how to find out mine!!!

Blossom Bouquet: EXCELLENT!! FINALLY a way to know for sure! Subscribing on GP! Girl you deserve a million subscribers for this alone!

Jasmine Ekusai: Essentially if your hair still feels like cotton when it’s wet then you have low porosity hair. Which is why washing goes may be a bit more difficult for you too. Moisture retention is your friend. It doesn’t take much for our hair to get dry because it doesn’t absorb as much moisture, your hair tangles and breaks off a lot easier when it’s dry so moisturising and conditioning your hair is where you need to prioritise.

Texas grade and made: Yess Girl! Me and my daughter talked about this and how the “4c etc…” label doesn’t work for everyone!

iAmKi: Well Thank You Sis,...no more wasting money on wrong products. You're the Best!

Mariah Faith: And remember that product build up absolutely will affect porosity! Only do this test AFTER using a clarifying shampoo for a “blank slate” because if you use products with lots of oils or butters, they do coat the hair shaft and cause build up over time which can also have the same signs as low porosity hair. Build up prevents moisture from properly penetrating the hair shaft and thus causes dry, dehydrated hair.

Aries Asata: She literally proved that she could SHOW you better than she could TELL you. Nicely done.

Steffani Nelson: About to try this right now! Thank you!!!

Princess Madera: Been saying this but even top hairstylist tried to say it doesn’t matter. I stuck with this and love my hair cause i know what my hair wants and needs by listening to it not everyone else ❤️. I love this video

BeyondaBlonde: This is incredibly informative. THANK YOU

Sapphire Relaxed Hair: AMEN! I Preach this as we on my channel. God Bless you

GERRI FORTE’ CASTER: This vid is the bomb!!!!! I took her advice tested my hair, with the room temp water…results was my strand is low periodicity…I purchased the shampoo and BOOOOOOM! it worked…I washed my natural fro in this great smelling shampoo, rinsed and the length stayed while wet!!!! Thank you so much for your authentic advice!

Elena C: Instant subscription because this is the MOST informational hair video I have ever watched! Like porosity!? How open are my hair pores??? I never even thought in my life this was my issue!!! Thank you from the medium porosity stands of the top of my lid for this info and video!

Deanna Smith: Girl thank you. This video helps so much you need to go viral

just.us4all: i was dealing with dry, breaking hair for a while until i used sulfur8's loc and braid scalp spray which I believe did exactly what this shampoo did for your hair. i've been looking for more low porosity hair products every since so thanks my only question is if the cuticle reverts back you its original state naturally or if there's something you should do to ensure that it doesn't lose the moisture. i'm traing to be an esthetician so ik using astringents cause the pore/follicle to contract or "close" but is it the same with the cuticle?

crazysydnee: Thank you! I read about this when I first started transitioning but the visual makes it way easier understand

Sugar Chump: But what happens when u have multiple porosities in your hair? Cuz I put three strands from different parts of my head and one stayed at the top while the other 2 were in the middle. ‍♀️

Yokebreaker76: Thank you for this! I just learned something so important!

Koncrete Family Values: Ok this is literally thee best (clear) explanation of hair porosity I’ve ever come across

SavantWorld: Amazing!!! You made this so understandable.

Katie Schilke: Damn this isa great video!! I'm a hairstylist and definitely learned alot!!

Kodi (•&• ): *"Hey, there's a hair in my drink."*

Stephanie Diamond: Sis didn’t just leave us with the water test, but she gave us a SOLUTION to the problem❤️❤️❤️

Summer Madness: I’ve seen videos showing the hair porosity test but this a different test. She shampooed that one hair strand, which made THIS video the best hair porosity test! You’re the real MVP!

Tania Johnson: Thanks girl you explain this better than any the YouTube video I have ever watch

MajaLisa Avery: I didn't know there was a way to test your hair! Thank you, now I can get hair products that work for my hair finally!!!

Denise S-A: I agree! I figured out my porosity 2 years ago and I’ve gotten closer to my VERY lazy natural aspirations every since! Way less stress!

Nanny News & Views: This is so great!!! I've hated this topic but until now I didn't understand all tge options and how to test my hair. But this was simple and I can use tools I already have at home. Thanks!

Jay Nicole: Girlllllllllll thank you I would have NEVER thought to do this!!!❤

Kelli Sees: I’ve known for a while that porosity is more important for choosing products but I’ve never heard that there are product that can open the cuticles without you needing to apply heat! I always took having low porosity hair as the signal to just like use lighter oils and products but Shampoos with a high pH open the cuticle while conditioners are usually more on the acidic side and help close it. Avoiding shampoo or shampooing significantly less isn’t just unnecessary but may actually be standing in the way of achieving good moisturizing in low porosity hair specifically. This is probably the reason co-washing never really worked for me! Can’t believe it’s taken this long to learn this

L Noah: This is EXTREMEMLY HELPFUL. Thank You Very much

Rafaela: This is gold

Blue Skies: I've always known my hair was low porosity but I can't find that product here in my city‍♀️. I desperately need something like that since I am starting all over now. This was a fantastic video!

Sis Went Vegan: This was so so helpful!!! Thank you!!!

Kelly: Wow if I had seen this video when I was natural 5 years ago I would of never permed my hair. Thank you

Jordan Messer: All stylists should know this no matter the texture! This video deserves an award!!!

Jewel: I remember when I did this a couple years ago. I ended up forgetting, and I walked away, ended up going back like 20 min later, AND IT WAS STILL ON TOP OF THE WATER. Glad I found another low-po girl!!! ❤

LaDonte McDonald: Omg girl thank you I need this when I take my braids down

ItsBrittBritt: I’ve known I had low porosity, fine strand and medium density hair since I started college in 2013. I was so bored that I started learning about my hair… I just figured it out because it took a minute for my hair to get fully wet when I washed it in the shower.

Aisha Ahmad: Lets appreciate how she spend time explaining this❤️

T R: Quick, to the point, and visuals. That's how to do a video .
