YES to dry shampoo, and a bigger YES to making your own, for PENNIES. This stuff is AMAZING, you have to try it (and it smells so good, too). I was honestly shocked when I tried it at first, it was so easy and it really worked.

I sing the praises of dry shampoo, often. I love the stuff! It helps me get to that coveted third (or fourth :-/) day hair, and less washing means less drying-out and more luscious hair. BUT: I don’t love the price of store bought brands. In this video I give my easy, inexpensive and ultra effective dry shampoo recipe AND I offer some tips for how much dry shampoo is too much dry shampoo as well as an easy hair rinse recipe, and a scalp cleanse recipe!

Thanks for tuning in. I hope this video helps your hair, (and your wallet)!

Hi and welcome to my video about how to make your own DIY dry shampoo for pennies, I used to go and buy dry, shampoo and canister and keep tons of money for it only to have it run out on me, and I thought there's got to be A better way - and there is so in this video - I'm going to show you two ingredient dry shampoo - that could not be easier works like a charm. Just a quick reminder, if you haven't done so already to subscribe to my channel and give this video a thumbs up if you like using dry shampoo before I get into the recipe, I just want to give you a couple: pointers about dry shampoo and have a Lot more information on my website at Melissa maker com, I'll link to that blog post for you down below dry shampoo. Ok, it doesn't actually clean your scalp. It absorbs oil, but it leaves this almost crusty powder, like residue behind on your scalp, so you can use it day after day after day, because this is going to start to build up gunk on your scalp and that's actually not good for your scalp at all. So I would say, use dry shampoo for one day two days, if you're in a desperate situation, but aside from that know, you got to just wash your hair and fight the bullet, I'm also going to get into my hair care routine. Briefly after I give you the recipe, but before that, let's talk about how to ditch this and put money back in your pocket. Now, to be honest, I feel like this might get a little anti-climatic, because it is that simple, but you're basically going to take cocoa powder, if you're a brunette like me and cornstarch and you're going to mix equal parts of these two products which you can get It a ball to store more pennies in a small container. I use a really large makeup brush, I mix it all up and then I keep it in a screw top container. That way the powder doesn't fly everywhere and that's it. I just use this old large makeup brush it's a chisel deluxe powder. I believe this is a crown brush product, but you can use any one that sort of large and in charge and not special, and then this is the container that I use. It'S just an old hand, cream container that has a screw top lid. You can see the product in there and then I just take the brush. I gently dab it into the container. I'D tap it off, so I'm not like a powder head and then I just find the areas on my scalp that need a touch-up. So you know my part tends to get greasy the front of my hair and definitely the area where my hairline meets my ears. That is like super brief Factory for me and then I'll just take it and dust the product in let it sit for a minute and massage it in with my fingers and then style as usual. That'S the simple recipe and if you want a couple of other quick haircare tips, say that three times fast, it's not easy. I'M going to show you what I do to keep my hair looking good. So after I finished shampooing and conditioning dead, hair I'll then take about a cup of apple cider, vinegar, I put it into a 2 cup glass. I fill the rest of that glass with water and then I add 10 drops of rosemary, essential oil, and I just pour that over my scalp and that helps rinse out any build-up or any extra stuff that I don't want in. My hair really helps to clarify it and the rosemary is great because it's a scalp stimulant, so we can actually help with hair growth and, yes, girlfriends, I'm a fan of hair growth. Here'S another cool thing that you can try, especially if you find that you have some buildup in your hair from I don't know. Let'S say too much: dry, shampoo or product. You can add a tablespoon of plain old baking soda to your shampoo. Just shampoo, your hair is normal rinse. It out your hair is going to feel squeaky clean. It'S going to clarify your hair, clarify your scalp, get rid of all that build-up and leave you with nice, fresh bouncy, clean hair and then, of course, conditioned as usual. I'Ve been obsessing over my hair since pretty much I had hair. I have been really about it, studying it trying different things to make. It look amazing, so I know that these tips work. I'Ve also shared them with a lot of my girlfriends, even my sister and anytime. I share a tester like hello. Why did I know this earlier? So now you guys have that info, and I help you you that I hope that it works well for you and I'd love to in the comments down below. How often do you wash your hair at this point? I'M watching mine every 3 to 4 days, pretty good, don't you think so yeah. Let me know in the comments down below I'm quite curious. What kind of haircare routine you have if you found this video helpful, please give it a thumbs up and share it with someone who you know might need a DIY dry, shampoo recipe. You haven't done so already. You can subscribe to this channel to get more videos. Just like this, and you can check out these two videos that you might find helpful as well thanks so much for watching and I'll see you doing.

Rosie Meek: The tutorial starts at 1:37

Purely Maddie: I wash my hair once a week. I use a non toxic shampoo and since I switched I notice a HUGE difference in how often I need to wash my hair. I make a dry shampoo similar to this but instead of cornstarch I use organic arrowroot powder, organic unsweetened cocoa powder, rosemary essential oil and tea tree essential oil. Works like a charm!!

Amy McRae: I use cornstarch for dry shampoo too, and I love it way more than any spray dry shampoo I’ve ever used. I find it works best if I use it before bed, and by morning my hair isn’t greasy.

Ida Waikel: My best dry shampoo tip is to put it on freshly cleaned hair as soon as it's dry. It goes on easier and keeps your hair looking good longer than waiting to use dry shampoo on day two or three

Art and Tales: An actual helpful DIY using stuff you really already have , THANK YOU .

64Biina: I've only just started using dry shampoo and am a bit nervous about spraying all that 'stuff' onto my hair and scalp. I will definitely try the corn starch (as I am a blonde). Thanks Melissa for doing all the hard work for us. You're a legend! Cheers from Australia. :)

Balanced Healthy Living: Thanks for the tips, the diy shampoo really blends in with your hair!!!

Hilary Zeller: Thank you. Good easy tip. I would question using vinegar after conditioner though, as it will strip the conditioner out of your hair. The vinegar makes your hair feel smooth because it makes the cuticles along the hair shaft lie flat, but it also cuts through oils from conditioner and will rinse that off as well. I would suggest conditioning after the vinegar rinse rather than before. Or just ditching the conditioner and saving your money.

PowdaPuff: Thanks so much. I have been using d/shampoo from the supermarket and it has made me so dry and flaky. It's awful. I especially notice my scalp itches after using it and after shampooing. So now I will be making my own and can't wait to see how it works on my hair. Thin hair so hard to keep looking clean.

Mija J: The first one really works and I love the coco powder idea because I have dark brown hair and I hate looking like a grandma after I regular dry shampoo

Eunycel25: Love your videos Melissa!

shree Jadeja: Hey melissa..!!! I m a huge fan of yours and never miss a single video.... I live in India and its really hot here so I do wash my hair every other day... I always wanted to have a very simple and handy recipe for dry shampoo.....and u just came up with it... thank you sooo much...really liked the video

Bobbie St John: I am actually getting away with 4-6 days and I understand from my hairdresser once a week is good. I too use arrowroot, cacao, and essential oils. Thank you for your recipe and tips for clarifying shampoo.

cheryl anderson: I also wash my hair about every 3 days. Thank you for these magical tips!!!!

LowCountryGirl 777: I'm going to try this asap. I have super oily, natural blomde hair. Dirt and oil really seem to show up more readily on light coloured hair. I have to wash daily. Thanks Melissa for the awesome tips! God bless!

LeeAnn S: I wash my hair every other day. I use dry shampoo on the other days. I'll have to give your"recipe" a try!

Ronja Sebastian: Amazing. Thank you! I'm in Costa Rica and can't get any of the stuff I usually do in the US. This video is a life saver. I wash my hair every 3-5 days and in love with the Monat Dry Shampoo (and all their products). Now gonna try this recipe. Thaaaaank you!!!!

FreddyTheBellhop: When I had long hair I used to wash every four days or so. It was easier to get away with since I'd do an updo the last two days. Now that I have a short bob I wash every other day. Can't wait to try this, thank you!!

Emily Rogers: I have oily hair, so I wash every other day most of the time. I like the diy dry shampoo for brunettes. Thanks for sharing.

CheapLiving: I wash mine every 2-3 days usually. My scalp has been itchy and super flaky since we moved to a place with hard water (2 years ago). I am going to try putting baking soda in my shampoo and pray it works. Thank you for the tips!

Michelle Hasty: I wash my hair about every 4 days and I think your hair is really pretty!

Noel carter: I naturally have oily hair . So 3 days, is usually my max. Rarely, 4 days. However, I can't stand oily hair.

Gina Perry: I wash my short hair every 3 or 4 days & was looking for a natural alternative to the spray. Thank you for the recipe I will certainly try it. :-[

TonyHickschick: Melissa, I want to say how nice it is see a video on this channel for a change. I love the other one as well, but as long as you have two you might as well use both.

Malena Lorente: I wash it daily because I have extremely oily hair but I didn´t feel like washing it today and tried your tip. It works! Bit itchy tho.

Sara Damyar: I don't use dry shampoo at all but I honestly enjoy the video a lot, you are the best

Amanda Marie Mullins: I am loving this Channel! I am using the baking soda shampoo tip (saw it on Clean my Space). Amazing! I share this one with everyone. :)

Lainey Wright: I wash, brush, and put my hair into a ponytail because my hair turns to grease quickly. If I tuck it behind my ears a couple times after shampooing, it will explode into a grease pit. Thanks for the tips. I loved the video.

Jerry & Linda's Place/Everyday Living: Thank you for sharing this great tip!

Teenage Idiocracy: Flour also works if u don’t have cornstarch!

Linda CeeTee: great tip....will definitely try it out! I use an old make up brush to put that 'shake on' texturizer that I pour into a little bowl. way better control of where it goes! I wash my hair every 3 to four days depending on what i'm doing and where i'm going! thanks for posting!

Karen Jensen: I have really short, very dry hair so I only wash it about once a week. Last time I went 3 weeks. But I don't sweat a lot and I don't usually use styling products so it really doesn't get very dirty. I do rinse every time I shower so some of the potential gunk gets rinsed out. I tried the baking soda/shampoo trick the last time I washed my hair and it was fabulous. My usually coarse crispy hair is very clean and soft.

Zhi Qing Ni: I use to use normal cheap shampoo. I’ve switch to 99 percent avocado and coconut shampoo/conditioner. Hairburst is the brand I used. It’s not the most expensive shampoo/conditioner. I recommend using hairburst!

Basstractorgirl: I Wash my hair two or three times a week. Didn't know you had this other channel. Excited I found it & congratulations & prayers for your up and coming arrival...

noneya bizness: I'm having neck surgery and will be in a brace for 3 months. The chemicals I read on all the dry shampoos scared the crap out of me. Praying this helps!

Danyelle Arbuckle-Guerrero: I love this diy! I hate washing my hair everyday, i prefer every other day or 2 days and I don't really like aresol dry shampoo But my fiance thinks it smells if I don't LOL sooo now im gonna smell like cocoa :)

Envtbldth zzZzz: If you aint got corn starch you can use powder

Amy Hoang: great idea! I can't wait to try this!!!

Huricane Kat: I wash my hair about once a week or as needed. I have natural curly hair which means that my natural oils don't always make it very far down the shafts of my hair. With curly hair you have to be careful about washing it so that is does not get dried out and brittle. Because curly hair can get dried out very easily and regularly I always use a leave in conditioner. There are some natural products that can be used in a diy recipe such as coconut oil or shea butter. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful knowledge!!

Gala Bond: I liked the video and I'm trying to make sense on rinsing your hear after using a DIY dry shampoo. So, if you need to rinse it why not to wash it with water and do your routine? Did I miss something? The sound in video is not to good

Tina Walker: I'm able to go 6 and sometimes 7 days before I have to wash my hair. But that is of course unless I have done some heavy sweating or swimming in a pool or lake. But just everyday I can go six and sometimes 7 days. Occasionally 5 days. I love the video.

Candice Sirju: THANK YOU SOOOO much.... i had dandruff (i think) and nothing was working ... i eventually cut my hair short so i could wash it more often thinking that might help .... it didnt!!! ..... i tried the baking soda in my shampoo.... i cannot tell you how grateful i am for this tip ... i wash my hair once a week and my dandruff is GONE!!!! COMPLETELY GONE!!! IT DOESNT COME BACK.. i also use the apple cider vinegar rinse and today i made and used the dry shampoo for the first time .....i love it!!!! this video is a hair care treasure trove .... i let my hair air dry and then i just brush it through with my hot brush (like 1 minute!!) and i USE NO ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS (my hair looks great). Thank you :)

Victoria: Yay! So early. I'll definitely try these! Love all your vids. God Bless and thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us!!

Jaiden Rhoton: Hey Melissa! I have been trying to make my hair amazing and I haven’t succeeded. My hair always looks like it hasn’t been brushed even ten seconds after I brush it and it gets greasy so quickly. In addition to that, after I wash my hair it still looks greasy and unclean. I have tried many different kinds of shampoo, including dandruff shampoo. I have tried not using conditioner. I have tried switching the order I do. I have tried washing in cold water. And I have not found any solution for any of my problems. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

It's ya girl Indica: You can use baby powder too. If your hair isn't super oily. Just use a tiny bit at a time and that works too. Like if you don't have anything else to use at the time. If your a blond you can use as much as you need tho.

Angela: 2 -3 days between washing otherwise my hair resembles straw, and if I have used a dry shampoo I will use a tea tree based shampoo because that clarify's my hair like no body's business. Ordinary days it's just a regular shampoo and for those fine dry ends I get I found a cream (Percy and Reeds Overnight Wonder something) and I have had comments on how amazing it works, bonus is you apply to dry hair. It's pricey but for the amount you need... It works out pretty well.

Johnna: How often do you use the diy hair rinse?

Ava Schoon: Omg I tried the cornstarch and coco powder hmmmm I smelt like chocolate all day haha

Rita Cymbalista: I live in South Carolina, and our summers are brutally humid.  Therefore, I wash my hair almost every day in the summer time.  Our winters are not brutally cold, however, we have a winter season, and I wash my hair every 2-3 days during the cold weather.  Thank you for the dry shampoo tips.

Allison May: Thank you for saving us a ton of money, Melissa!! I love your videos on this channel, however they always seem to be WAY quieter than those from the CMS channel. What gives, yo? Lol

Rachel Jones: I wash my hair once a day, and it was twice when I went to the gym. I've stopped that second time and just done a rinse and finger massage on my scalp after my gym time.

Alex Walker: Over the past year and a half I've been able to "train" my hair I only wash it every 4 or 5 days now and used dry shampoo a lot more when I was in the oily stages of this process. I usually use it once in the 4 -5 day to help in styling my hair for when I go to work. It really started out as me trying to save shampoo so that I wouldn't be spending a lot of money when I moved out of home 2 years ago and so far it's worked really well. Recently I dyed my hair a dark black purple blue colour and try to wash it as little as possible to keep the colour longer.

Jo S: I wash it 1x a week but its so much healthier washing it less

Rachel Taylor: I wash my hair every 2-3 days. It's to get long, brunette, and very thick. I also have an oily scalp.

tiger voodoomom: I wash my hair about once a week. But no sooner than three days. I have curly hair so it can be a bit unruly. I will shampoo and condition it in the shower. I start with warm water and finish with cold water. When I get out I blot my hair dry then spray on some apple cider vinegar. Next I add sweet almond oil to my ends. My hair is soft and the curls look much nicer. I don't need to worry about volume or bouncy hair I only need to worry about flat curls. And my regimen helps with that. I can keep it going and looking good for about a week. Love your videos!

Yad Ni: Is it ok if instead of cocoa powder i use chocomilk powder?

Jennifer: My hair is naturally brunette but is dyed red. What do you suggest instead of the coco powder. And do you have any tips to help keep my red hair dye look vibrant longer? Thank you!

Maan: What is the difference between cornflour and corn starch?

vicki_titus: I wash my hair almost everyday sometimes every other

Two Queens: it works for emergency but i wouldn’t use it other then that, definitely smells like chocolate lol

Karla Rodas: It works

Maria Vida Benson: I wash daily . I will try the dry shampoo :-) thanks for sharing

Gyuldzhan Kozumali: unfortunately my hair is sooo greasy and dry shampoo only takes me $1 day after a wash, so washing my hair every other day :(

divinesiren: I made this and my hair looks better. Though, my sister laughed at me for using cocoa powder.

Tekla Staley: What do you recommend for a blonde with fine, thin hair?

Little Lyrebird: So simple. Equal parts cocoa powder and corn starch. Will have to do this to reduce how much i wash my hair (i wash it almost everyday due to greasiness) and now i am getting hair loss. I dont like aerosols due to global warming from hydrocarbons in them and lush dry shampoo is 20$ pretty expensive given its really only cornstarch and essential oils.

Maria: But one question: doesnt Cocoa powder smell? I mean a Bit like chocolate? Which cocoa powder should we use? RAW/Sweetend/Unsweetend?

Tay Revs: Would it matter if the powders are expired? I feel like it shouldn’t matter.

Diane O: I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days. I live in a hot climate and was washing it every day until I found out that was bad for it.

Alexis Krause: My mom makes me wash my hair once every two days. She usually tells me that "normal" people take a shower twice a day. Reading these comments is making me believe that she is lying.

Basta Zmnako: Is it normal cocoa or unsweeted ?

gracie2400: For a two ingredient simple recipie this video seems to go on for agggesssss

Nicole: Dawn dish detergent is great to get product out of your hair.

Trupti Angaitkar: Hay I have tried it work well I have oily hair always not possible to wash every 2-3 day so best option in hurry thanks for sharing

viiIeiraS: I just use baby powder and it works well

JoAnn Parker: I wash my hair once a week.

Artsy• •Ideas: Ok. First of all, you are very pretty, and second of all, this works!

Kamala Akana: Does this really work ? Has anyone tried this?

TonyHickschick: Sara dyr I agree with you. A lot of the things Melissa does are not my thing, but I still love hearing what she has to say on a given subject.

9005jackie: Thanks for sharing !!!

Emily Sharrard: 2-3 days. I touch up dry shampoo. Gonna try acv with rosemary.

Celeste D: I wash mine twice a week.

Khizran Hunger-lab: Great info

Chasity Savage: i'm an every other day washer... with baby powder on the non-wash days.

Scrunchymommabear: I can't go more than say 36 hours without washing my hair becausr i have skin issues and if i don't I get super itchy and then flakey :( I've tried several times to go without washing my hair

Jaime Bellon: I wash my hair every 3-4 days

Enola Kitchen: i wash my hair three times a week

MKat: Wouldn't the cocoa powder attract bees & other insects?

Cissy Lynn: Once a week. Don't even use dry shampoo.... I'm just that dry. :/

Mariyah Ahmed: Will cocoa powder still work with black hair

Hello kArEn: Does the cocoa help your hair cause of the cockroaches in it?

Cherry Berry: Brilliant using a brush!

Kendra: i wash my hair every 2-3 days but that is going to change because i am going zero waste so that is why i looked this up. I think everyone should go zero waste it is better for you and the environment.

vlaskiss: What about for blonde hair? What should i use instead of coco powder? Thank you! :)

Zoe Shears: I have the worst hair even it's so frizzy it drives me insane. Just recently I have been finding within a day it is needing washing more. So if I am not going out I leave it greasy for longer because I heard it helps replenish the oils.

Diane Knuckles: I wash my hair about every 4 days unless I need to get gussied up for something special. I'm retired now but when I worked, I washed it every other day because I put products in every day and it seemed to look gunkier faster. Now I don't use very many products so I don't have that issue anymore.

Kurimson Kitsune: Ah maybe this dry shampoo wont make my face feel ichy and horrible

Nutree Cosmetics: You're stunning A lot of videos about keratin for hair on my channel

Tayyibah Piracha: What can we use in place of cocoa powder?

Raj: Does it work?
