#GMA #HairLoss #COVID19

Turn now to our new series, exploring hair loss and what causes it as we age and the treatment options available. This morning we are looking into the growing phenomenon of people experiencing hair loss after covid we're going to talk to dr jen ashton in just a moment about her own hair loss. But first take a look: while a battle with covid may include the loss of smell and taste. There is one thing you may not expect to lose your hair. It happened to 20 year old, malaika barlow. Just months after a coven 19 diagnosis, her thick curly hair started coming right out of her head, leaving her brush. Looking like this and her hair flat and lifeless as the hair is falling out like i'm just like crying in the shower and like yelling. At my hair, basically being like stop falling out, she began searching for answers. I stumbled across on facebook somebody talking about losing their hair from covid, and i was like, oh my goodness, like this matches all my symptoms. Some doctors seeking an uptick in the phenomenon known as telogen, effluvium or shock hair loss after covid, where fever or illness causes hair, shedding recent studies showing that 24 to 35 percent of patients with covid had associated hair loss. The hair loss happens a few weeks to months after someone has contracted copin 19 and essentially the hairs prematurely get shifted into a shedding phase. It'S even happened to celebs alyssa milano, sharing this on instagram at the start of the pandemic. There is no hair one brushing this is my hair loss from covid19 covet doesn't cause hair loss in everyone and good news. The hair returns to normal on its own, but you may have to wait six months to a year to prevent this hair loss. Dr caterpal recommends eating a balanced diet, taking multivitamins keeping stress to a minimum and in some cases medications can help it's best just to minimize stressing about the hair and know that the hair will come back if you're dealing with it. I'D really just say that you're not alone and that your beauty is not defined in your hair and that it will get better joining us now is abc news chief medical correspondent, dr jen ashton, dr jen, nice, to see you thank you, determine dermatologists know why this Is happening well, there's actually a lot in the dermatologic literature on this with respect to covid and they're thinking right now. The two theories is that there's both inflammation and maybe an autoimmune phenomenon that causes the virus to really literally attack the hair follicle. So you have a mixed telogen picture and in some cases over 10 percent of women can have an accelerated female pattern, hair loss. So you get this constellation of different phenomenon, all resulting in thinning hair or hair loss. That can be very distressing, and i know, speaking of distressing and you've been sharing it here behind the scenes, but also very publicly about your own battle, with hair loss due to a combination of factors yeah, and i think the key is you know, i went and Saw my dermatologist to find out what was behind my hair loss, thinning hair. I actually had more breakage than losing patches of hair, but to be clear, people can have more than one thing going on at a time, so it can be age, it could be covered. It could be styling damage or coloring damage or hair extensions, causing attraction alopecia. It could be diet. The key is finding out what factors are going on with you, so that then you can go on and all-out attack and really try to. You know make it better. Well with that attack making what are the treatment options out there, i'm literally doing everything - and i think, that's generally what a lot of people do because of that sense of desperation. But the first thing is rest: your hair from styling from color processing. That is massively important. Hair, stylist and dermatologist will tell you that alike. There are a few over-the-counter oral hair supplements that largely contain multivitamins and biotin. That can help hair extensions. This ponytail is from hidden crown. They can be really helpful for people. For me, it was increasing protein in my diet, since i went vegetarian and then prp scalp injections, which are experimental. I have tried them and i saw a huge result. It does take months. They are expensive, they're, generally not covered by insurance, but for some types of hair loss you can see the before and after it takes about four to six months, but that can be really helpful as well all right, dr jen. Thank you. As always. We appreciate it and later this week we are going to look at how diet and styling, as we just heard dr dunn mentioned, can also affect hair loss, so stay tuned for that, and you can scan the qr code for more on covet hair loss, symptoms and Treatments on our website - goodmorningamerica.com - well: hey there gma fans robin roberts here thanks for checking out our youtube channel lots of great stuff here so go on click. Jean Zhang: Might got Covid in March, really mild symptoms. Start losing my hair since April, lost almost half of my beautiful black hair. still hopeful, taking multivitamins, especially Vitamin D to strength my immune system. Whoever experiencing this horrible disease, you are not alone.

Sonia Vasquez: The same thing happened to me. I did Biotin, scalp scrub, hair massager and a good profesional shampoo. Also omega rich foods, protein and low carb. Also rosemary and I now have many baby hairs growing. Also very important a good professional shampoo not one from the stores but from a salon. I tried to switch to something more affordable and started to loose hair again, lost quite a bit of baby hairs. Now back to using professional shampoo for anti hair loss.

JannaRae1897: I had extremely mild symptoms from covid and have loat half my hair. I really didnt have much to spare either.

hand4hair: I've had a few 'fevers' and stressful moments in my life and NEVER have I lost hair like this, til I had the Covid/Omicron. It's unreal!

Rosydreams: I’m trying my best to stay sane after so much hair loss. It’s sad that doctors in the uk don’t even suggest this may be the case, they just reply it’s due to stress. Im having multiple blood tests thinking it may be iron deficiency but it’s not! If you’re going through the same, please take a blood test to rule out any decencies and I’m trying rosemary water which I heard helps with re growth. Best of luck to everyone you’re not alone ❤

Momma Bear and her Cubs: When I told my doctor they made me feel like I was crazy!! Everything I said now is all the long haul issues!

Beach Waves: Yep, after covid, i had the hair loss. Went my PCP and was informed about the symptoms due to shock to system. Plus alot of stress due to work and medical issues, so yeah i had a trifecta. She did send me to a dermatologist but never went as other urgent medical issues was more important. But i just stop combing my hair too much bc i was afraid of losing more. Lol, so i thought of of one of the treatment on my own.

SACRED JASMINE: I had covid in July of 2020 BUT I had the first dose of the Covid vaccine in May 2021. My hair started falling in June of 2021 SO MUCH that after constantly trimming it and changing my shampoo and deep conditioning more often and braiding what was left just to keep it on my head, eventually I just cut it all off in June 2022. My hair is about 2 inches now and is growing slowly although my scalp is always sore to the touch. I would brush my hair a few times just like this woman did in the video and the brush would be FULL of my hair coming out from the root. Easily 500-1500 strands per day. Maybe more.

Mat: You can lose up to 50% of your hair from Covid. I got Covid back in August. Last week it started falling out. I have super curly and thick hair. My hair is now almost completely straight and I can actually run a comb through it, which I never could before in my life.

Rhianna Wondolowski: I've lost half my hair 4 months after having Covid. It's still shedding...

Andrea Nehl: I talked to my PCP and my derm and they honestly haven't done much for me. My derm told me to download the Calm app and not stress and that she can't do anything for me. Honestly I've found all the doctors that I've seen over the last few years don't really care about your symptoms unless you are dying. I wish they'd at least try to help me by doing some testing. I'm losing 500-600 hairs each time I wash. Its a much bigger ball of hair than what they showed in the video in the girl's hand. It seriously breaks my heart. It is really hard to stay positive and just not worry about it. I've always lost a lot of hair due to it being long and tangly and probably because I have hypothyroidism, but this is a whole new level. Oh and my PCP says my hair loss has nothing to do with my thyroid because my tsh lab is in range. Maybe she is correct, I just wish she would at least try to help a little bit.

Ami.: Omg yes me too! I started losing my hair after getting my covid vaccine and so did my mom and neighbor woman!

Shanaly: i got really BAD covid with fever for 20hrs, and exactly 2 weeks later, i get in the shower to wash my hair after like 5 days and a full handful or more came out at once from the crown of my head. 75% of my hair has fallen out in the span of maybe w week. i had such thick hair... i'm truly hoping it grows back and this isnt some permaloss shit

Christine: This is not a natural thing. I had covid last August and lost half of my hair from September - December. It has FINALLY gotten back to its full state, but wow. I've had worse symptoms from the flu and didn't lost any hair. This is something else.

rawuel anaji: i had covid last week and i’m still recovering i’m going through hair loss

Candidas: It happened to me too. I thought I was crazy. My ponytail feels like half gone my pretty red hair....

Zay The Mayor225: Ever since I gotten covid in 2020 the front of my hair hasn’t been the same, whenever I grow it it keeps shedding and it’s only in one spot smh I just want my hair to go back to normal‍♂️

Fausta Delgado: I had the same issue and though because of covid . I found out on my case after blood work that I had iron deficiency . After taking a strong iron supplement and iron rich milkshakes, new hair started coming out. Not sure if covid absorbs to much iron on your body but it all happened after covid. But iron deficiency has something to do with hair loss .

Chris Wolf: I’m 17 and I’m losing my hair since I’ve had Covid

Dollieglitz: I never had Covid but I took the shot and my hair started falling out in chunks. I had to cut my hair twice this year becase the rosemary tea rinse gives me alot of baby hairs, but it looks choppy.

JoSh Marmolejo: My hairs didn’t start shedding till a year after I had COVID.

Re Nee: My hair is falling out after Covid and I never got vaccinated.

Patti Oyler: Castor oil works great to regrow hair. Get a small jar add a tablespoon or more castor oil, add 5-10 drops lavender same for tea tree oil , I like to add some vitamin e oil , stir. Apply to scalp morning and evening. I use it on my eye lashes and they have become longer it has even helped regrow over plucked eyebrows blessings

Lanisha Long: Yes I lost 1/2 of my hair. My hair line is further back now :(.

GxP: Im 19 male and in August i got covid, now my hair is very thin and i can see my head. Will the hair got their density and strength back? I remember when they would dry ( which they would do fast)they would stay on that place now they move anywhere.

Roseygirl: I use to have very thick hair, but I believe since covid 2 months ago my pony is way thinner

Ami: I have never had covid or hair loss . I had one issue with my hair shedding once and I fixed the problem. Now I only get like one or two hairs that come out tops . My hair has grown back longer and stronger than ever .

stephana milius: This hairloss is starting to scare me

lll: It is been almost a year now since i had corona , i went to a doctor which costs me a lot and nothing to be proud of actually i still suffer from hair loss espacially when i get stressed again about belittle things i wish my hair to come back to its healthy days .

Indy the Rottweiler: I literally have had clumps fall out. But I also have lupus so it is hard to say what's going on

Sierra Skye Baker : I hope she wasn’t also using devacurl hair product because I had hairloss from that and just as it was growing back then I got Covid and it fell out again…

Robin Addis-Vaughn: I'm losing mine. I was hospitalized for 15 days.

Zahra Omar: I lost my edges after contracting Covid .

Azaki Shimo: I’m recently like not long ago about 3 months ago even right now I’m actually losing hair and I am crying in the showers, I freak out feeling so scared

Daisy The Service Dog: I've lost 80 % of my hair

Wendy T: Shedding now also lower back ache. Had covid July

Rachel Cross: 6 months to a year I won’t have one strand of hair left on my head.

robotron17: *Nobel Prize winner, Kary Mullis, inventor of PCR test:* "With PCR, if you do it well, you can find almost anything in anybody. It starts making you believe in the sort of Buddhist notion that everything is contained in everything else. Because if you can amplify one single molecule up to to something that you can really measure, which PCR can do, then there’s just very few molecules that you don’t have at least one single one of them in your body. So that could be thought of as a misuse of it just to claim that it’s meaningful. ... It’s just a process that’s used to make a whole lot of something out of something. *It doesn’t tell you that you’re sick and it doesn’t tell you that the thing you ended up with really was gonna hurt you or anything like that."*

Thomas R: Does any other animal naturally produce spiked antibodies against any virus?

Zone: Take plenty of vitamins many people have been lacking vitamins i regrew most my hair

Rose Ace: Right after i got my vaccine shot mine started to fall out

Rose Mejia: Keep stress to a minimum. Yea ok

C B: Both me and a coworker used ArtemiC Rescue when we had COVID-19, we were both well again within 3 days. And recently somebody in the house tested positive. I immediately started using the ArtemiC Support serum one drop per day and I never developed any symptoms despite having somebody who was tested positive in my house. Of key importance is of course having the ArtemiC bottle already in your refrigerator and being able to use it immediately.

Audiannic Healing: Herbal use, can save what you have & strengthen your strands

JannaRae1897: it doesnt always come back. Licensed cosmetologist here!

Koen Benjamin: I have bald spots in my beard since I got the two vaccines and the booster.... Thanks Pfizer. I will never be able to grow a beard again
