Welcome, if you are new here, I posted a video this Summer that combined my marketing background with my love for researching hair science by discussing seven common hair care marketing gimmicks that Brands will use to get consumers to buy their products. You guys really enjoyed it and asked if I could share more content like that, so today I'm going to be sharing the truth behind even more hair care, marketing gimmicks or in other words, marketing tactics in the hair care space that you should be aware of, so That you don't waste your hard-earned money on products that aren't actually going to deliver the results that they promise. Alright, let's jump into it. There are tons of shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, leave-in products and a lot of other products out there that promise to strengthen damaged hair, and I think it's safe to assume that most consumers will see a claim like that and believe that that product will help to strengthen Each individual hair strand that has been weakened by various forms of damage like heat, UV exposure and hair dye, but in order for a product to actually increase the tensile properties of an individual hairstyle brand, which is basically the scientific terminology used to describe hair strength. The product would need to create new bonds, and the reason for that is that, as we continue to expose our hair to things that cause damage the number of strength supporting Bonds in our hair decreases, which you guessed. It means that the strength of our hair decreases. As well so for any hair care product out there, a shampoo, a conditioner, a styling gel, a mousse, a dry shampoo for any product to actually strengthen the hair. It would need to contain reactive ingredients that actually create new Bonds in the hair. And while there are absolutely products that do contain ingredients like that, for example, k-18 and olaplex, there are also a lot of products that don't that still make those kinds of claims. So that's right, just because something says strengthening or strength on the label doesn't actually mean it's going to help to strengthen your hair, and that doesn't mean that products with those kinds of words on the label won't benefit the hair at all. It just usually means that they're not benefiting our hair in the way that we think they are usually what's going on. Is they just contain conditioning ingredients that are going to help to properly lubricate the hair so that we experience less breakage? But if I'm being honest, any well-formulated, hair care product will do that for you, regardless of the terminology used on the label. Let'S move on to hair care products containing biotin Brands make a lot of claims about biotin, including that it will help to thicken, strengthen repair and grow our hair. Wouldn'T it be great if it was actually that easy. The issue with those kinds of claims is that there are no legitimate scientific studies out there to actually prove that topically applied biotin will do any of the things that Brands say it will to our hair. There definitely is a lot more research out there for orally ingested, biotin like in the form of a vitamin, but when you try to find that same kind of information or research for topically Applied biotin, it's like crickets silence, you're not going to find much and if You use a product that contains Biotin and you notice that your hair looks thicker it's likely, because that product contains ingredients that are specifically designed or used to make the hair look fuller and to create the illusion of fullness, not because that product is actually permanently Plumping. Up your hair strands or adding more hair strands, we did talk about some of the nuances surrounding hair growth claims in the hair care industry in my last video, but there's an element of this topic that we didn't discuss in that video that I want to talk About today and that's hair growth products like conditioners, hair, masks, leave-in conditioners and styling products. This is going to be a very bold claim, but I feel completely confident in saying it, and that is that there is not a single product out there that you can apply to the lengths and ends of your hair. That is going to have any impact whatsoever on the rate at which your hair grows from your scalp, not a single one. It just doesn't make any sense what is or is not going on down here on any of this part of your hair is not going to have any in impact on what's going on up here, the conditioner is not going to speed this process up a hair Mask is not going to slow this process down because, what's going on up here in this process, up here is coming from inside our hair follicle, and I will say that I don't often see Brands coming out with one product and one of those categories and putting Hair growth on the label. What I typically see is a brand that has a lot of products already that promote hair growth, usually with like a leave-on serum or a leave-on. Scalp oil then expand into other product categories, light conditioner and styling products and then just use their same exact. Hair growth claims that they have on those other products on the subsequent products in their collection and again that definitely doesn't mean that those products aren't going to benefit your hair in any way because they usually will benefit your hair. It'S just not in the way that the brand is suggesting by using those hair growth claims. It'S definitely misleading to put claims like that on products that are specifically designed to be applied to the ends of the hair. Next, we have the bane of my existence and you know what it is natural or clean products. These kinds of claims represent marketing Scare Tactics at their finest, and while the exact claims that we see for products like this definitely do vary from Brand to Brand, I would say that the general gist is that you should be using products that are natural or clean, Because they are safer for you and safer for your hair and better for you as well there's an air of superiority with these claims in multiple areas. There are so many issues with natural beauty marketing like for starters, the fact that natural and clean aren't, even FDA, regulated terms, so Brands get to make up their own definition of what natural and clean mean to them. But if I try to list off every issue with this marketing strategy, I will be here until the end of time. So for the context of today's video I'll just say that one of the most misleading claims in natural beauty, marketing is the concept that natural or clean products contain ingredients that are safer and better for you and the reason why that's so misleading is because those claims Are almost never based in actual science, there are so many rules and regulations about what is and what is not safe to use in cosmetic products like down to the exact concentration of each individual ingredient. So to try to scare consumers into buying your products by suggesting that any other brand that contains ingredients, that, let's say I don't know weren't grown from a tree in the wilderness - will harm their health is not only misleading and Shady. But it's not an accurate representation of science. Alright, let's wrap this video up with hair growth, vitamins promoting the use of protein-based ingredients like keratin and collagen. The idea here is that if you increase your consumption of these kinds of ingredients, then your hair will grow longer and stronger and healthier, because your hair is made up of protein, and it is true that, on a structural level, our hair is primarily made up of Protein or keratin, but something I learned in a hair science course that I took this summer, is that each individual hair strand on our head is basically like its own keratin producing Factory. So unfortunately, just taking a vitamin with keratin or collagen in it is not going to alter the Keratin production in each of your hair fibers. It just doesn't work like that, but I wish again: wouldn't it be nice if it was that easy all right, you guys, those are all of the Hair Care marketing claims that I wanted to tackle for this video but of course, as always, there's absolutely more where That came from so, if you would like to see a part three, let me know in the comments below also, let me know if anything in this video was surprising to you or maybe confirmed a hunch that you had about some of these claims and if you Did enjoy the video, please don't forget, to give it a thumbs up subscribe to my channel click on that notification Bell and send my channel to a friend. Thank you so much for doing those things. Your support means the world. Thank you for watching my videos. allystresses: Hi Abbey, as a PhD candidate in protein biochemistry and studying proteins for a living (I mean I do it 24/7) I cannot agree more with everything that you’ve said. No haircare product can speed up hair growth and no amount of essential oil can cause your hair to miraculously grow down to your butt. Once damage has been done to the alpha keratin in the hair, only a bond repairing product can replace those bonds and even then, that protein structure has STILL been altered and will never be the same. Our hair, from my perspective has been designed to withstand stressors, which is why we have so many layers (cuticle, medulla, cortex) but when we introduce physical damage such as bleaching and perming that’s when real hair damage really starts to show, and bond building products have been designed to help with this type of damage. But at the end of the day, once that protein structure has lost its structure i.e a loss in the hydrogen, disulphide and salt bridges that form, your hair will never be the same.

slhilliard: If only I could convince my mom that "natural" and "clean" and "organic" (when it's one single ingredient in an inky list) doesn't mean "better"... ugh. Thanks for your content!

Robyn Wise: I'll admit that I did fall for the "clean beauty" gimmick when it first became popular, but when I really started to think about some of the claims and did my own research on ingredients, I quickly realized that it was exactly that, a gimmick. Now I know what to actually look for and don't pay much attention to "clean" marketing. I also know what ingredients agree with my body and what don't, i.e. I can't use toothpaste with SLS (it irritates my gums and makes the inside of my mouth peel) but that doesn't make SLS a bad ingredient.

Lauren Kelly: I've learned so much from you. You explain everything so well, and I so appreciate your content. You obviously work hard at what you do, and I'm so grateful to have found your channel.

Kerry Cohen: I hope other creators watch this video. The amount of misinformation being posted online is irresponsible. Thank you for doing the research before suggesting products!

Skyler Kilmer: YES! No amount of keratin/collagen is actually going to improve hair unless you're already deficient in certain amino acids. We all have an "amino acid pool" so we eat proteins, our body breaks them down into individual amino acids, and then uses those amino acids to build new proteins. Ensuring you're eating enough and a variety of proteins is really all you have to do to make sure your body can make those proteins!

LauraLVT GW1020: I love the knowledge and honesty of your content. Thank you for making it easy to understand and unlike some creators, not condescending. I never feel stupid, but always feel as I'm learning. I appreciate all you research and hard work

father crellick: youre the only youtuber that i trust when it comes to hair

Chamorro Jen: YES vote for a part 3! Love these videos, Abby! Thanks for all your hard work and research ❤

Wendy: I appreciate your honesty and all that you have studied to bring this content to everyone You have changed my entire routine of shampooing and conditioning

Lava Yuki: I agree with the whole biotin thing, I can't believe people actually believe that. I know people take supplements but it doesn't make sense topically, same with topical collagens. Some things are better off oral. I don't believe in the whole "clean" beauty thing, it's a massive scam.

j j: I just wanted to say, I've been following your channel for a while now and its made me so happy seeing your channel grow & randomly see your tik toks on my fyp!!! And a lot of it is due to videos just like this that dig deep into products and the 'why' behind the ingredients

Mary E: Yes to part 3. I didn't know what to believe about collagen powders and thank you for clarifying. I really appreciate that you research product claims and tell us what is bogus.

Gail Bennett: Hi Abbey, This was very informative video. When I was young I believed a lot of these claims but with age, trial and error and of course age I realized most of these claims are false!

Angiebear: When it comes to strengthening formulas don’t cheap out. K-18 is pricey for my taste but has completely saved my hair. Can’t thank this channel enough for recommending it. Ty for pointing out the multitude of false claims out there❤

Anne Cathy Moore: Would you be open to buying Function of Beauty again and seeing how you like it now that you're more conscious about your hair and could select your goals better? Also, they came out with a styling primer that they didn't have when you first tried it! Would love to hear your thoughts <3

DK B: I very much appreciate how much research you do! It's why I follow your channel. How do you incorporate purple shampoo into your routine? I would love to see a video going into depth on purple and blue shampoos.

Heather Anderson: Hey Abbey! Would love to hear your opinion on collagen supplements in regards to skin health! I’ve watched videos from the budget dermatologist that swayed me to give them a try. Also would love to hear your thoughts on rosemary oil for hair health too! I know Dr. Dre has made some videos on that topic as well. Thanks for all that you do!

Holly A.V.: i always get so excited when i get a notif that you uploaded!! thank you for repping us people with a love for both haircare/beauty and science!

Maylin Roget: This very much appreciate it! I used to have thicker hair, and is thinning out pretty bad, so you have no idea how much your channel is helping me!! Thank you

fruitypebs23: Abby coming through with the FACTS

HonesTea BeauTea: I told my hairdresser about you and told her that she needs to watch you. Your information is on point I love K18 just like you do and she loves Olaplex. I said she needs to watch you to step up her knowledge.. You are the real deal. The only one I trust When it comes to knowing what they are talking about with hair care

Kaitlyn Haubrich: Hi Abbey, love your channel! I've had a full highlight done on my hair twice now in the last four months and my hair is now very different. I never struggled with tangles and now I feel like I need to brush my hair every couple hours so it doesn't turn into a rats nest and I have to brush out half my head! I would love any advice or opinion you may have ❤️

Sara Emily Yy: Hey abbey would you ever consider doing a video about your closet, every time you film I’m always wondering where you buy ur clothes they are so cute . Also love the scientific evidence you bring to videos I’m a bio major here ❤❤

Kelly Waters: I finally grabbed a couple Vaseline lip therapies that you recommend while at the store. one night. My lips were moisturized, super soft and supple this morning.

Amanda Marie: I just recently got the k18, L’Oréal bond repair (working on purology), the coconut oil pre shampoo and the ordinary hair serum! hoping to be consistent and see results! Do you recommend using Olaplex 3 after k18 for 4 min or is that too much and just go to conditioner. Thank you! ❤

Jessa Kent: OH! I forgot to tell you I'm on my 4th application of Epres. GURL! So, I'm growing out my grays and my hair is half-gray, half-red. The red has been dyed and dyed and dyed and dyed and color stripped. You can literally close your eyes and run your hands down my hair, and tell where the gray stops and the red begins. The texture changes from soft and silky to crackling straw. The first use of Epres, I noticed, well, nothing. Second use, the feeling of silk extended much farther down my hair shaft. Third, even further. Today's wash day and my 4th (and final because it takes 1/2 a bottle to treat my long, thick hair), it's just maybe the last two inches of hair that still feel not quite silky. And even they are softer than they were! I'm definitely re-ordering it. It smells like someone left mothballs under a carpet in the 1970s, but I cannot deny the results.

Mia Wallace: I used the Redken extreme length for the past 3 years. Yes it made my hair hella long but boy did it thin my hair. At first I thought my holy grail shampoo then after a year my hair started breaking off. At the time i was barely using any heat...so it wasn't that. I stopped using it in January and I'm having a ton of new growth....hmmm

Shelby: I get so excited when you upload hair videos!! Makes my day

Ashley Dahl: I'd be SUPER interested to know your thoughts/ingredient breakdown of the Rodan and Fields haircare line that just came out- I'm not a seller of it but I've seen it everywhere and it's expensive compared to other brands so I'd be curious to know if it's worth it

Jamie Herrera: I love how you bring the Science Abbey!! Would you please consider becoming a Trichologist? You're too smart not to!

Elizabeth Cassetta: I am ready for Part 3!!!

Mahli: You are my favorite YouTuber of ALL TIME. no joke. Thank you Abbey ❤️

Kathleen P: Question…What shampoo/conditioner do you suggest for very thick straight limp hair? Thanks and great video! ❤

Kelly Waters: Collagen peptides daily have truly helped my skin and speed of hair/nail growth somehow. When I stop taking it, my skins and hair get so dull and my nails thin out and crack.

Alma Martinez: Great video as always! Was wondering if the popular Nutrafol hair supplements fall into this category as well

Simone Clarke: Yes, please do a part 3, thank you !!

Katie Swanson: Literally served a briogio density ad immediately after watching this. They highlight ✨biotin✨

Cupie Doll: Yes part 3 please ❤

Sara KhaleghiZadeh: Thanks a lot ❤ I always wonder if other types of supplements are actually going to work

Terri Martin: I love all your content! I’m wondering if you would do a review on Monat products. And go through some of their top ingredients. I am so curious what you think about that brand. ❤️

Danielle: When I was young, adults would say « if you want your hair to grow, you need to get regular trims » … I never understood that

Charis Gross: It’s always made sense to me that putting something on the bottom of your hair won’t affect how the hair is growing out of the top of your head. But then what about every time I get my hair cut and I’m told it will grow faster if I get it trimmed every six weeks? That’s bogus, right?

Cathy Hanson: Hi Abbey, I would like to see a Part 3

Leona Ball: Hi Abby can you try the Curlsmith co wash shampoo it’s fantastic and cleans the hair well. Even on straight hair also can you try the Curlsmith air dry cream. It’s also amazing I would love to see a review on this brand xxx even though it’s aimed at curly it’s also for Any hair type.

Michelle Romz: Hi Abbey, Is it bad for the hair to use a bond repair shampoo and conditioner whenever I wash my hair (3-4 times per week)? I’m using the Amika The Kure everytime I wash/condition my hair.

annabenton: Hey Abby, so quick question. If I have died my hair loads and it’s damaged… if I was to shave my hair off and let it come through again naturally, would the new strands coming through still be damaged? Or would they be like new xxx

Jae Maree: I used Bondi boost after suffering alopecia and my hair grew back in my balding sports and also new growth… worked for me so

Fernanda Kuri: Hi Abbey! I love these videos. What is the hair science course you took?

Krishna Chakrabarty: Please do a budget dupes for skincare and haircare products that you like or use.

Delilah Albert: Hi Abby I love your videos and take your advice very seriously. So saying that can you Review the e.l.f. Hydrating Core Lip Shine, and the Heritage by Mindys new scalp care line with the blue packaging. Thank you

Kelly Burnett: Wondering about the densifying claims ? I bet it's the same claim as strengthing? I would love to hear thoughts on aging hair ? You are the "Hair Whisperer".☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

parinaz Az: Same goes for collagen in skincare ..

nhi: Your brows look amazing here!! Did you find a replacement for the nudestix?

Deborah Binnie: Thanks for the good reminders. Just because it's natural doesn't make it helpful. Poison Ivy is natural, too.

Angela: Dr Dray did an interesting video on rosemary oil and pumpkin seed oil for hair growth if people want to check that out - she is a board certified dermatologist. Claims that oils don’t help isn’t necessarily true just because there isn’t enough research yet to back up either claim - which is wild because I would think by now there would be more

Norioucha __: Hi Abbey, thank you for this informative video. I'd like to know what's your opinion about Pura D'or mask for thinning hair!

Donna Sue Miles: I agree you are so smart and accurate..thank you

Bambi Blanco: Definitely part three please and a look at the baby in every video ❤❤

HONEYDIP ALLURE: Can you please make a video about Aspergillus ferment (Terabond) and how it works on the hair? It claims to repair bonds but also has a lightning effect on the skin. Will products containing this ingredient lighten my hair over time?

Halfofmyheart: Hope you have a great weekend Abbey!

Kori Thompson: Hey Abbey, Love the Freakin Heck outta you too. I am 60 and my hair is thinning a wee bit. Would you be able to go over some catch phrases or marketing gimmicks to look out for as I search for a product to grow some new hair.

Catherine Rayburn: I love watching your videos, and have learned you gotta read the ingredient list. If I don’t know what it us I look it up.

Stephanie Beharry: Hey abbey can you do a review on foligain shampoos please!!

Paige Galloway: Would it be worth it to take a hair supplement? Will it do anything? There’s one I’m looking at that has Keratin & Silica.

Ervin's Movie Corner: Happy weekend, Abbey!❤

sarah zabala: Can you please do an update on epres and your sisters hair. Also any new research related to it

M B: Hey Abbey, what do you think of the Iles Formula products? Will you try them?

Elizabeth Smith: Does this apply to all hair types?

Sky Saenz: Then what is a natural clean shampoo you recommend? And there’s really no shampoo to help grow your hair? Vegamor wouldn’t be one?

bnb0510: You have such gorgeous hair!

Jake: Hell yeah. I'm a dude trying to navigate this stuff crazy hair world, this helps lol thanks

Donna Halstead: Can u look into curly hair products.. I hear all time about avoiding silicones and that need use protein containing products .. it’s so confusing!! And the curly community really pushes the “natural “ product usage with lots of like food things such as honey and avocado in products ?? Is this good for hair??? Also what r your thoughts on drugstore vs high end products ???

K Bradshaw: Yes please give us part 3.

Hector Herrera: i literally love you

KA: What do you think about rosemary oil/rosemary water on scalp? There is a study that supports the effect of rosemary oil on hair growth.

Donna-Louise Edwards: Hi abbey, can you please let me know your thoughts on georgiemane products please? I would really love to get your opinion x Tia x

Mama Coya: I NEED MOOORE

Anna N.: Have you reviewed amika The Closer Instant Split-end Hair Repair Cream? I wondered if has ingredients to do what it claims?

Chelsie McNeese: I do have a question though. In regards to “clean” and “natural” hair products. What about the products that have been rated through EWG? EWG shows ingredient concerns for things like cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity, etc… It had many differ brands and will show you the “hazard score” rating for EWG certified to 10 being the worst. So with all of this information, you are saying it is just a scare tactic? I’m genuinely curious. I look forward to a response!

Farren Schmidt: Any scalp recs for hair growth? I always hear nutrafol pills…

Jayney P: Was wondering what blush/bronzer you are wearing in this video. So pretty :)

simi dhillon: Omg! Fable & Mane made my hair fall out, I stopped using it and hair fall stopped. Tried using their oil again and same problem, hair fall again . Never using that again.

Jayne Rosengarten: Great information!

Debbie Sc.: Do you have a video talking about curly girl approved products and what you think about that?

Lauren Elliott: I wanna know about Vegamour. I suffer from mild-moderate hair loss and I desperately wa t something to help grow it back

Mimi Moon: Happy Friday beautiful! The weekend is almost here!!!

Ainsley | Elite Budget: Completely unrelated but I love the style of this thumbnail!

Samiha Humayra: Does protein treatment makes hair strong???

Nikki2370: Omg we love allllll this.

Denise Bennett: Hi Abbey could you tell be what product is cheapest and effective as a bonding product for bleached hair as im on a budget and from UK

Tatum Reed: I’m a bit confused, I follow your healthy hair wash day routine and you say to use a pre shampoo oil mask before washing your hair and use k18 for bond repair. You posted a Instagram reel where you said to not use a pre shampoo oil mask when using k18?

Selma Nielsen Øidvin: Does hair vitamins actully work?

Serena: great video thank you

Diana D: I’m having trouble with your lipstick link.. it doesn’t show what color you have on

just me I am: you just save me some

chel chel: Ugh my hair is extremely damaged from bleaching

Alyssa Thomas: So you don’t take any hair vitamins at all?

Jada Tourond: Hi Abbey. What beautiful sorcery is on your lips?

Stephanie D: ❤❤❤
