Blocking THE SHOULDER 29 IS BACKED UP. AVENUE, GIVE YOURSELF ABOUT 30 MINUTES. BACK TO YOU. A FAVORITE HAIR PRODUCT OLA PLEX NUMBER THREE HAS BEEN HAIR TRANSFORMATIONS WHICH THERE ARE MANY. THIS MONTH A BAN WAS PUT IN PLACE BY THE EU REGULATORY AUTHORITY AND IT STARTS FAIRLY Soon - AND THIS IS OVER THE INGREDIENT LILIOL, WHICH HAS BEEN LINKED TO DISRUPTIONS IN FETAL DEVELOPMENT. - THEY SAY IT WAS USED AS A FRAGRANCE AND IT HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED. JOINING US LIVE TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS AND ADDRESS SOME CONCERNS THAT FOLKS HAVE IS CERTIFIED. D.C. DERMATOLOGIST DR. NOELLE HERBER.. Thank YOU FOR JOINING US. GOOD MORNING.. This IS A HOT TOPIC.. I'Ve USED IT BEFORE HIGHLY TOUTED IN TERMS OF ITS TRANSFORMATIONS. THERE. It IS VERY FAMILIAR SIGHT THERE. WHAT IS IT AND WHAT IS THE CONCERN YOU'RE EXACTLY RIGHT, THAT IT IS A FRAGRANCE.? It'S NOT WHAT WE CONSIDER AN SOMETHING DESIGNED TO ABSORB SOMETHING: THAT'S JUST A FRAGRANCE ADDITIVE TO THE PRODUCT.. This IS BANNED IN THE UK DUE TO IT LINKED TO FERTILITY ISSUES.. There IS SOME DISPUTE ABOUT HOW STRONG THAT LINK IS.. We KNOW THAT THE ORIGINAL SAFETY STUDY WAS PUBLISHED BACK IN 2019. ON OUR RADAR FOR A WHILE.. The REASON IT'S COMING INTO THE PUBLIC AWARENESS NOW IS THAT MARCH 2022 WAS THE DEADLINE FOR PRODUCTS TO REMOVE THIS INGREDIENTS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION.. This STEMS FROM ANIMAL STUDIES WHERE THE ANIMALS WERE FED, LILIOL. NOT APPLIED TO THEIR HAIR., BUT THEY SAW THAT AT HIGH DOSES. There COULD BE AN EFFECT ON, AS YOU SAY, THIS BAN HAPPENS TO BE TAKING EFFECT LATER THIS MONTH AND IT'S BEEN AROUND. They HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING IT FOR QUITE SOME TIME., SO IT WAS N'T RUSHED OFF OF THE YOU ALSO MENTIONED. It WAS TAKEN AT HIGH DOSAGE ON THE LAB RATS., WHICH IS DIFFERENT THAN ON HUMANS IN THEIR HAIR. Not INGESTED.. Is THIS A CASE WHERE DOSAGE LEVEL MATTERS YES AND THERE'S A COMMON PHRASE? The DOSE MAKES THE POISON. MEANING A VERY LOW LEVEL EXPOSURE TO SOMETHING MAY BE OKAY, WHEREAS A HIGH LEVEL OF EXPOSURE MAY BE PROBLEMATIC.. We THINK THAT A HAIR APPLICATION OF LET'S SAY OLAPLEX, SOMETHING CONTAINING LILIOL, GIVES 1/10000 OF THE EXPOSURE, GIVING THE PROBLEMS IN THESE ANIMAL. In OLA PLEX, IT IS A SHORT CONTACT PRODUCT. Only ON HAIR. HAIR IS NOT VERY ABSORBENT.. My CONCERN TRENDS FROM SOME OF THAT OLA PLEX BUN, WHERE PEOPLE ARE SATURATING THEIR SCALP AND HAIR WITH OLA PLEX, PUTTING IT BACK IN A BUN AND LEAVING IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. USE OF OLA PLEX THAT EXTENDED EXPOSURE IS INTENDED.. If YOU HAVE A NEWER BOTTLE, THE INGREDIENT SHOULD N'T EVEN BE IN THERE.. I'M GLAD YOU MENTIONED THAT. GLOBE, NOT JUST FOR THE EU., BUT I STILL HAVE TO ASK: WHY WAS IT BANNED IN THE EU AND NOT HERE NOT IN THE STATES, DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EUROPEAN INGREDIENT STANDARDS AND U.S.? One OF THE COMMON STATISTICS CITED IS IN THE EU. There ARE 1,400 BANNED INGREDIENTS IN THE U.S.. We ONLY HAVE A SMALL NUMBER., PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE UK. There ARE SEVERAL THAT WOULD NEVER BE FUEL., BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE, AS A DERMATOLOGIST, I'M CONCERNED THAT THERE ARE AWESOME, SUNSCREEN INGREDIENTS APPROVED IN EUROPE THAT WE DO N'T HAVE IN THE U.S.. So THERE ARE BOTH SIDES BAN SOMETHING IN EUROPE AND VICE VERSA., SO CAUTIOUS BECAUSE OF THIS POTENTIAL ANIMAL STUDY LINK AND BECAUSE THIS INGREDIENT IS NOT ESSENTIAL., ALL OF THESE CAN FUNCTION WELL WITHOUT LILIOL. USE AS INTENDED KEY WITH ANY PRODUCT.. Are THERE I ANY SCENARIOS WHERE CERTAIN PEOPLE, DEMOGRAPHICS SHOULD NOT BE USING IT JUST TO THERE IS SO MUCH PERSONAL FREEDOM WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING PRODUCTS AND YOUR COMFORT LEVEL IS REALLY WHAT IS IMPORTANT.. If YOU HAVE AN OLDER BOTTLE AND IT WORRIES YOU SWAP IT OUT FOR SOMETHING NEW., I WILL SAY, WHILE OLAPLEX IS GETTING A LOT OF THE LIGHT RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN IT AND IT IS POPULAR, I WOULD BE CONCERNED MORE WITH FRAGRANCE, BECAUSE THE Application OF A FRAGRANCE CONTAINING LILIOL GIVES 70 TIMES MORE EXPOSURE THAN A HAIR PRODUCT.. I WOULD N'T BE A VERY GOOD PHYSICIAN IF I DID N'T ADD THAT SO MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE INFERTILITY.. We THINK IT'S ONE IN EIGHT COUPLES.. So IF THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE EXPERIENCING AND YOU'RE CONCERNED ABOUT, IT DO N'T BLAME IT'S NOTHING THAT USING A HAIR PRODUCT CAUSED.. We DO NOT THINK THAT THAT IS A DIRECT LINK IN HUMANS.. I WANTED TO ADD THAT, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT'S SUCH A DIFFICULT THING FOR PEOPLE TO GO THROUGH. MORE COMMON THAN FOLKS REALIZE, AS YOU MENTIONED THERE.. Thank YOU SO MUCH

EverydayJewel71: Let’s be honest the FDA standards for food and products is very low compared to other countries. FDA allows so many harmful ingredients in our consumption it’s shameful.

Dawn verstl: I wish more ppl were as concerned about the crap they put in our food‍♀️

mah k: Really appreciate her saying "don't blame yourself if you have experienced infertility and you have used Olaplaex". I've been experiencing infertility and its really easy for me to guilt trip myself and start blaming myself and just get sad and depressed and start feeling regretful. Thank you.

Myriam Williams: The news lady is absolutely stunning.

Margaret Minuth: This is probably one of the most informative consumer alerts I've seen. Thoroughly explained. Thank you for giving this enough time.

Kari Lockrem: If it’s on your skin, it’s in your body. You use your hands to apply it. A “low level” exposure shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is terrible. I have used this on my clients hair for years and is absolutely on my hands. The US should be as careful as Europe.

MzEllaful: This is a complex topic to cover in a news brief. The overall tone of this conversation suggested that this isn't a big concern.. but it is. Legitimate long term effects on your body from certain chemicals can cause cellular changes. You might not think something is wrong because your not visibly sick, but the real chemical disturbance is happening deep in your body. This is a real concern that people need to pay attention to. A lot of people care about what goes into your body, and you also need to care about what goes on your body and what you put in your home (is the wood furniture treated with formaldehyde?) Chemical fragrances need to be banned immediately. They are toxic to your body and the environment.

Sharon Rogers: This felt like an actual common sense discussion versus histrionics and the sky is falling. The dose does make the poison and rat studies do not equate to human trials. She was very clear that the male mice were force fed incredibly high amounts so unless I'm drinking the shampoo, I'm not concerned.

KawiLover250: This dermatologist was very objective and knowledgable and I appreciated that so, so much!

Ana Valenz: They should talk about all the products that contain this not only Olaplex, I've never tried the product but I see bias against only one product

SuperCatdoll: Wow…. The dermatologist was so articulate and explained it so so well !!! Thank u for that!!! I love olaplex

B. Walker: Less risk in a bowl at a salon but for the most of the population the product is put on and rinsed off in the shower. So it does come in contact with skin, not just hair. And there is the fact that people don't read instructions or warnings. So they are never going to use it any different than an approved product. HEY ALL BRANDS: WE CONSUMERS DON'T need fragrance in anything other than fragrance. PS. Food ingredients have "flavorings" and beauty/body products have "fragrance" Know why? Those two ingredient words allow the manufacturer to sneak in a product, refer to it as fragrance or flavoring and not list it in the ingredients. True flavorings is simply vanilla bean, or basil and oregano, or salt. Why not put THAT on the label?

Andyourlittledog: I’ve been using Olaplex at home for years. My hair is beautiful and I’ve never had an issue. The product also does exactly what it promises. My experience is very positive and I will continue to use the line.

hmy 8799: JEEZ. And they’ve touted themselves as being a CLEAN HAIR PRODUCT LINE?! Any product that is labeled as “CLEAN”—by both stores and companies themselves—should be allowed to include the word “fragrance” as an ingredient. “Fragrance” is too often used in cases like this, where toxic products are hidden under that umbrella term, so people trying to be conscious (many of whom do it because of health issues who already have toxic burdens that are too much to function normally—hence me reacting a TAD angrily right now) And small amount or not!—It’s straight up greenwashing! Thought we’d gotten over that hurdle but I was sadly mistaken. I’m just confused how they managed to trick the beauty websites who are extremely strict about the ingredients in any products they sell….they claim to have a very thorough process for every item (Looking at the detox market, credo beauty, etc). People use those websites because they can trust that they won’t have to check the ingredients of the products carried. This is not cooool! Ok public freakout over….I literally have a travel size bottle of the olaplex #3 specifically next to me Jin my bed because I was going to use it in the shower I’m about to take or would have in my next one. THANKS FOR REPORTING ON THIS !!!!

Suzzanne Poré: It amazes me that these experts give warnings about products, whilst they have a face full of toxins. Pretty sure that people aren't eating the stuff.

Tim Schulze: This fragrance component is not exclusive to OLAPLEX, so what is the fuzz about? It has been used in fragrances, body lotion, shower gel etc. I’m ok with it being removed from products but was it really a big deal?

Florecita: I love how “casual” this conversation is. First off, this is a complex situation that shouldn’t be addressed quickly in a short news update. Something that’s potentially harmful and hasn’t been fully studied isn’t a quick 5 minutes conversation. Second, this all sounds to me almost like Olaplex paid Fox News to clarify to the public there is no an issue with their product, Lol. This dermatologist is like “the differences between the EU and the US is just that we are different and we banned different ingredients” No sh*t Sherlock! But that’s not why we banned different ingredients. We are less careful than EU because we are BOUGHT by corporations so they dictate what cheap ingredients they want to use regardless of risks to the human body. IT’S ABOUT MONEY. The EU in the other hand puts emphasis in human health which is why they have banned a lot of ingredients with potential for harmful effects, like certain chemical sunscreens. It ain’t because we just “pick and choose differently”. People would be watching this and thinking “oh this is great, now we know is safe”. No you don’t. This is all a theater, because we really do NOT know the long term effects of A LOT of ingredients. We just don’t. And just because something isn’t ingested does NOT mean is not harmful. There are also fumes produced by ingredients, and even sensitivities with contact. Great “expert” advice in this charade ‍♀️

DangerouslyRelaxed: This was kind of a non-issue, bs report. It's been removed; it was only a component in fragrance, so the percentage is most likely much less than 1%; it only goes on the hair- not being ingested; it seems to only effect male fertility in rats that have ingested it, and the Dr. said there is no correlation with it in humans. And even if there WAS a correlation, would it be with women, or men? And if only men, how many men who wish to have children use Olaplex?

angelica: Thank you for the information the dermatologist is so easy to understand

OSoGorgeouso: I love Olaplex. It’s working wonders on my hair.

Marisa Mendoza: These ladies are so informative

PRTrinilan: Wait a minute...concerned about an ingredient in Olaplex but not the mega injections in her face & lips?? Perplexing.

Lisa: It's always something this product has been featured all over the place people praising it for over a year now,, I go and buy it now this always something negative to come but my hair loves it have the whole line risk with everything I suppose.

CarrieV: Wow. Just shows the dangers of under regulation and lack of testing. Fragrance is not needed in these products anyway.

Ashley Williams: I assumed she was someone complaining about an allergic reaction… not a contributing dermatologist

Bxxyz: I just started using olaplex no.7 and love it

Foxy: To everyone saying ‘but the EU cares about health and the FDA is bought by corporations’ 1. That is true about the FDA, but the EU regulations do have drawbacks. 2. Do you enjoy having midol or pamprin? Not allowed in U.K. per EU regulations (which I was hoping would end after brexit but has not ) and there is not an alternative. 3. Do you enjoy having Azo in your medicine cabinet for a UTI? Also not allowed (except from dodgy Amazon) Alternatives are ineffective ‘sachets’ and good luck getting an antibiotic prescription because gps are advised to use sparingly, only as last resort. 4. This is not an exhaustive list of all the ways EU controls consumer access to products, which in some cases having little evidence to warrant the restrictions. This side of the pond have their own large corporate brands and there is a vested interest in keeping US brands out of the market when possible.

Sunshine4: Fragrance in beauty products sucks!!! Glad it was removed. If FDA tried to regulate in how they really want to do people would be claiming their PERSONAL FREEDOMS, until something goes wrong and then blame the government.

Freckles 277: Wow, I almost used this product. Good to know.

Summerangel Martinez: The lady speaking for olaplex has serious hair damage herself olaplex eventually starts to reverse and breaks your hair when using in a long time. Be careful.

KIM Hawthorne: Despise Olaplex- used it and developed a lot of issues afterwards- the product bonded my hair together- a mess- that said I think she's a spokesperson for the company

Ogpurethicknesse: The crazy thing is that fragrance is so not regulated they do not have to tell us because of proprietary claims

Kate Miller: Competitors are paying dermatologists to come out with a negative side effect not to use it because a lot of people love it. Me included

Your Access To The Red Carpet!: I just shared this with my daughter to alert her because she has a few Olaplex products she uses but she’s a Biolage user. She does plan to have one more child in her growing family. So I sent her a warning to avoid using these products.

Emma Marie: why is no one saying that's its in brands like Dior Perfume, Paco Rabanne, Amika, Living Proof, Mane N Tail, Sol De Janeiro, Amika, Palmers, Yes To Tomatos, Matrix, Ouai and many many more

L M: Even when you apply only to hair, when you wash out in shower, it runs down your back, and the back of the body. It still gets to the skin. Questions: However, if it ( LILIAL- also know as BUTYLPHENYL METHYLPROPIONAL, per the news) is no longer there (it was removed), what do present users have to worry about? And the small amount - is it a problem? (Though I’m glad it’s removed). So…, like cyanide: Tiny amounts found in natural foods, no problem. Large amounts all at once, BIG PROBLEM. And, how do we detect in other products? Since they can just say “fragrance” on the ingredients. EDIT: They said they removed, but my January 2022 purchase still contains it. (They must be trying to sell out the old inventory before Mar2022. Smh. )

MySkinnydip: Olaplex did transform my hair. It stopped my shedding but I would leave it on my hair over night! O well you live and learn!

Heather Far: I just bought mine in the US and don’t see it in the ingredients. So that’s good

Claire_Eve: Oh dear, that poor woman’s face

chris newburg: I'm sorry but it's hard to take the advice about toxins in shampoo from someone who clearly has fillers in her lips and botox ..her forehead doesn't move at all..she's full of chemicals and her hair is bleached to death.

ThePookie25: I love doing the Olaplex bun!

Charisma Hornum-Fries: Perfume allergy has made life a bitch. Every time a perfume is removed I get tiny flusters of joy. Don’t get why it’s there to begin with.

Ryan Michael: Yes, dangerous, says the dermatologist who has fillers and botox and possibly plastic surgery. I am a hairstylist, and I use Olaplex. All the products out there that the majority of people use daily skin or hair product(s) with much higher risk ingredients than this one. Remember the skin cancer ingredient in vast amount of brands of sunscreen? This is just another ingredient among others in our daily used products, don't act all surprised people. Yes, companies are blamed, but really it should be our FDA who's toblame for not having a regulation of ingredients that brands put in their products. I don't think many or cosmetic chemists know that many ingredients may cause or know of them causing harmful side effects...even if minimal. Btw, I'd much rather hear this from dermatologist without injectables with toxins and polymers used on themselves for its credibility.

Dayane Oliveira: Animal Testing should be BANNED!✊

Sarah Ochoa: Ok men , take notes! DO NOT EAT OLAPLEX!

Miyako Akita: I see this as an ultimate win.

Elsa Diaz: The testing on animals alone should be enough of an issue… the vanity of some people! SMH

Tandoori: Is it really a good comparison if they test test it by having rats eat high amounts of it? Who’s going to eat it?

French Classes from LogicLanguageLearning: I used Olaplex 3 last night !

Pip: I live in the uK and I am incredibly alarmed by the amount of toxic ingredients in haircare & skincare in the US. You can’t mess with your health use NAVE safe products. Profits over health mentality is TrueType shocking.

Kris Trimbo: Olaplex damage my hair it took a year to repair it after I used it twice . Made it look like it was bleached fried

Ms Vë: Can anyone do a study on the pill "Nutrofol" does it causes infertility as well

A M: I had to stop using it. I would get the WORST migraine after using it.

Meko: I'm just imagining how the conversation between me & that $28 bottle of olaplex shampoo is gonna go in the shower tomorrow

Jasmine Jay: The lady with blonde hair should go easy on the Botox she’s looking scary

Birdie: That product specifically causes my scalp to break out

Jasmine Jay: Olaplex took out nearly all my hair they need to be sued .

Sweetheart Okay: Animal testing makes the products NOT cruelty free !!!

Lv GeeCo: Ah jokes on them I already have infertility issues! Doctors don’t care.

Sharri Kremer: Not sure I get the connection between feeding this ingredient to animals vs. humans applying to their hair? I am sure there are any number of ingredients in products that would cause harm if we ate them.

Beth Watson: We know that laboratory experiments on animals are ineffective. They force fed the rats in extremely large quantities. Does she want to discuss side effects of fillers?

Player 1: And this is why some products are professional use only because the layman will make mistakes always

Quaia's Diary: This makes me sick to my f”n stomach. ‍ I’ve been using this whole system for years I don’t leave #3 for hours but damn

P3as C3rrots: Ive had no issues getting pregnant and I use Olaplex. Pretty sure infertility is caused by something else

Autumn May: It's not in the product anymore. This news is too late to matter.

Peggy Greeby: I thought the dermatologist was someone who had used the product and had an allergic reaction, hence the swollen lips. She needs to lay off the lip fillers.

sheamonique daniel: this is why people should do research before they start spreading stuff. gessssssh

Mags Kavanaugh: There was not enough of the ingredient in the Olaplex #3, it has been taken out, so it OK!!!

AlexisOn TheBeat: The news anchor is so pretty

angelica: Both of these ladies are stunning simply beautiful

Simone Lee: Your body is always absorbing things in its surroundings, your scalp is definitely absorbing more. Your scalp heats up absorption is highly likely.. Imma pass on Ola

Disgruntled Bystander: Don't the Kardashians use olaplex? I don't see them having infertility issues.

Very Bad Minimalist: No more Olaplex buns for me!! How can I tell if I have the new or older formulation? I have a bit left and would like to use it up… but I’ll just leave it in for 10 minutes as directed, not 1-2 days like I was doing ‍♀️

Kayla Shayla: Was this study paid for by Redken or some other brand with a non patented bond multiplier/Strenthener?

Scottie Hall: What did the dermatologist do to her face?

See See: Dermatologist looks like she had a bad reaction to hair dye.

Judione Marshall: Well luckily I have no plans to eat olaplex and I'd never leave it my hair for 2 days.

Sonia Fernández: So glad I don't eat it by the pound.

peter dee: So they basically use animal testing…..

zan752000: Oh no not my Olaplex!

ytube12345: that news anchor is STUNNING omg

user739: Lol I've been using this for years

LDS Wife: all i use is olaplex!

Nuggy Gillard: I used it and my hair locked up and unable to comb and I had to cut my waist length hair

Shelia Murdaugh: The doctor needs to take it easy on face surgery. When you talk and your face doesn’t move it’s very creepy.

Kathy12Ray: Well, if your husband eats your hair, he's in trouble.

Amarie: My hair fell out by the handful using Olaplex shampoo and conditioner

Sincerelyves: There finding anyway they can to stop women from getting pregnant.

HintOfLavender: PLEASE fix your CC, I am deaf in one ear and had a VERY hard time following along because some words were entirely missing and it was VERY far behind. :(

Serreina Wass: Um....what about the other olaplex products. 1...2? Same smell- same effects?

Hollee: The anchor on the right is soooo beautiful.

Paris Antoinette: I’m sorry, but the anchor woman is GORGEOUS

tracey easter photography: Let's be honest She needs to stop botoxing herself

Chocolatier: Using Olaplex or any product with lilial is NOT going to cause infertility in humans. Most cosmetic products will cause harm if ingested. You also can't drink large amounts of essential oils. But I guess I don't blame the over-precaution.

Joy Phillips: It just says Fragrance(parfum) on my bottle... what does that mean?

Lovley Bones: Damn, the news lady is beautiful

Milica Milojkovic: Who trusts a dermatologist who looks like that?!

Victoria Victoria: Did she injected that olaplex in her lips looks so weird though..

Elizabeth Broderick: Your hair is dead. It’s not absorbing anything and leeching it to your bloodstream… even your skin doesn’t really absorb much of what you put on it unless you put it on FREQUENTLY over a very long period of time in MASSIVE quantities. it’s a old wives’ tale that you can’t color your hair while pregnant. Same goes here essentially.
