Complaints, Class Action Lawsuits Pile Up Against Hair Care Company Monat
Two hundred million dollars – that's how much money Monat Global says it made selling hair care products in 2017 through multi-level marketing.
Women across the country say a brand of haircare products that claim to make hair thicker younger. Looking and fuller can actually do just the opposite, but consumers and stylists who speak out about their negative experiences say the manufacturer is trying to silence them. This is an investigation that was started by our sister station in Las Vegas, but now a Michigan stylist is being sued in federal court for speaking up about Monet, so I tried it and I really loved it like. I was like oh my gosh. My hair feels really good. They have a men's line and a kid's line, so the whole family can use it like. I was very excited. Aaron asked. Me'S excitement quickly faded when she says her hair began falling out after using the product she'd been selling. I was crying to my husband and not over just my hair, but what had I done? She'S? What Monique calls a market partner, someone who sells their shampoo and other haircare products on the company's multi-level marketing platform, mostly through social media, but the young mother had to walk away from an increasingly lucrative business when she says she could no longer stand by the products. I was very nervous to say anything because of the backlash I have seen of other people that spoke out about what was happening in for recently filed class-action lawsuits against Monat. The company is accused of using strong-armed legal tactics to silence critics. We have to do that to protect ourselves from defamation. I was honest in not wanting people to be harmed and I feel like they're attacking me for wanting to help people Monat is suing Highland, Township, hairstylist, Kayla Baker, accusing her of defamation, they're, demanding more than 225 thousand dollars in damages because of Baker's posts on Facebook. About what she says, our health problems caused by Monat products I kept using it, and I noticed immediately my scalp started itching. It was almost like a burning sensation. My front hairline from side to side actually broke off, so I ended up having to get bangs, even though the FDA is now looking at nearly 200 adverse event. Reports about Monat the company's lawyers say there is no scientific basis for Baker's claims, but her attorney is calling lawsuits like this extreme. It'S an intimidation tactic that they're trying to come after someone that likely doesn't have the means or ability to defend this lawsuit just so. They can have another notch on their belt. Monat would only agree to a phone interview. The company claims people like Baker engaged in a smear campaign designed to promote competing products. When we tried to reason with our attackers who were bullying people online bullying, some of our market partners, bullying, other customers and pretty killing them for using the product, we had to file lawsuit to protect ourselves from the attacks. Baker denies that she's financially motivated to trash Monat online, and she says it's the Monat market partners who have bullied her. I had one message me saying that I was doing it because I have mental illnesses. Everyone is entitled to their opinion by the way. It is not a constitutional right to complain about a company. A company has a right to respond any way it wants to the Federal Trade Commission's consumer review. Fairness Act protects consumers, ability to share their honest opinions about a business's products, services or conduct in any forum, including social media. But that's not enough. This request for a restraining order against Monat has been filed in south florida, asking a court to protect consumers against mo Nate's threats, harassment and intimidation. When eight says one stylist has agreed to pay them to settle its claims against her, we reached out to several Monat users and those who sell the products and asked them to talk to us on camera. They all declined.

Linda: The fact that anybody working for Monat wouldn't come to talk to the news anchor in person tells that something is suspicious. If they have nothing to hide, why not talk in person?
Leona Edelmann: I used Monat hair products for just under a month and it made my head itch like crazy. I contacted the company to cancel my membership and was told that I had to buy 2 more qualifying orders at $84 each or pay $25 to get out without have to take the flexship orders, none of which was disclosed to me when I signed up to buy the first order. Of course I took the $25 out instead of paying $168 for something that I will never use.
Janie Jones: First I would like to say, I applaud you and I thank you for your expertise and efforts in displaying your work for these companies as you so diligently submit demontrations, classes and tutorials of their products to help the consumer in making their choices in purchasing from these companies. We as consumers trust in the Youtube platform and products that are advertised through your channel from these companies who reach out for your help in selling their products to the public. However, the hair that the company send to you to review, will not come to the consumer the same way, nor will it come as adverised when they pay their hard earned money to buy it. For months I searched and observed wig companies hoping to find good quality hair for my clients and came across Afsisterwigs. The reviews for this company were astronomical until I considered the facts. i didnt look into buying from them right away because i wanted to see other reviews from others and their outcome who actually bought and installed the wig. The demonstrations i saw on some of the top channels on YouTube influenced me greatly. I wont give out their names beause my message is not a positive one and I highly respect them, their work skill and quality expertise. I am not a celebrity, nor do i have a Youtube channel. I am a regular working lady looking to make a living from my trade as a certified licensed hair stylist. Although I pay the same money for the wig i ordered from Afsisterwigs as a celebrity or someone with their own Youtube channel would, I end up not getting the same quality hair. Now why do you think that is? The Afsisterwig that I purchased was the yaki full lace skin melt, small size 12in 150 density $219. The picture advertised on their website with the same stats is longer and beautiful, however I knew i would get a shorter version for the price that i paid. When I received my order I tore into that package like a cat on a hot tin roof scratching a hole to escape the heat. That's just how eager i was to get that wig out of the package to get it customized and ready for my customer. When I took it out of the plastic, my bottom lip dropped to my knees in horror. I took a deep breath, sat down to collect myself and wrote to the company the very same day I received the wig asking, " Is this a joke? Am I being punked?? I explained to the company what the wig looked like and sent them pictures. The hair was lifeless. it was layered throughout the hair with no gloss or shine. About 4 inches of the hair on the wig was pin needle straight. When I ask if I could return it for another with the same value, they told me that it would be too cost affected. Now mind you, the lace was still in tact, no plucking or bleaching, nor were there any products used on it. It was ready to be sent straight back to the company. The wig was so awful l asked for a refund since they didn't want to replace it. When I sent the pictures showing the jacked up peice of wig they sent to me, all that I got from Afsisterwigs at that time was an apology. They apologized that I wasn't happy with my purchase and offered me 15% of the $219 I spent on the wig. I was so angry my eye balls smoked from the boiling steam in my eye sockets. I reached out to the company on multiple ocassions to request help with an exchange or my refund. Why they couldnt see the proof in the pictures was beyond me. My goodness even Mr. Magoo could see that the wig they sent was a jacked up peice of junk! Later they offered me $45 and a15% discount on my next purchase. I was not satisfied but agreed to getting something back from my hard earned money Afsisterwigs is not the only company taking advantage of consumers. if you are not a celebrity or have your own channel on Youtube, then look to get the the peice of junk meant for their gabage dump. Contrary to their effort to settle I feel that I got screwed. The Afsisterwig company offered me and advertised in their ad bouncy hair, yaki straight, skin melt full lace, 150 density, soft hair that they also advertise in all of their marketing material. I on the other hand did not received the hair quality hair they advertised. In my opinion, Afsisterwigs falsely advertised the presentation and quality of their product that I paid ($219) for. I would rather have had a refund or to receive a wig that would be comparable to what they advertised. But to no avail. Afsisterwigs falsly adertised and misrepresented the product that they supply. They provide hair to celebrities and the people they work with who own their channels on YouTube and it appears that they are sending these individuals a superior quality of wigs than they send to, me, we, you, the consumers. I still have the pictures of the wig the same day I took it out the box.
Charlene Newton: I have also had hair loss and just recently stopped and noticed a difference immediately. My hairdresser recommended this product. I noticed I was losing hair almost immediately and I was told it was age and not the product. My hair was always thin and now it is just terrible. This makes me so angry. I also bought the shampoo for hair growth for my BF and it did not work.

Wanda Gillis: I've used Monat products (Renew Shampoo, Replenishing Masque and Leave in conditioner) off and on for the past 3 years. Nothing but good things happened in my experience. My hair grew immediately, strengthened, and became more luxurious and beautiful. Men and women noticed it, and would compliment me. Wish I could have been more consistent with it, but only able to budget for it a couple times a year. I just ordered some more products for the first time this year, and once again I am very, very happy. I'm a truly satisfied customer looking for even more results during this period of lockdown.

And when you try to cancel membership etc, there's no where on your account to do it!! very frustrating and has made me very angry!! I still don't know for sure it's been cancelled like I asked because I couldn't understand the woman on the phone.
Ivonne Rodriguez: I hate that I got myself in to this mess of a company to be a VIP. I only did it to help out my niece. I asked to get a shipping label because on the VIP agreement does not say customer is responsible for shipping fee. I was told on the disclosure does state that which it does not say on the VIP agreement you can’t put it on the disclosure and not on the VIP agreement section. I have not heard from them since August. I wish I should of done my research before purchasing anything from them. This company is so unprofessional and don’t care about customer service

Yesenia Ruiz: I'm here because I've had alopecia for the past almost 11 years now and a friend of mine got me this product in exchange that I do her nails because I'm a nail tech and I accepted but now I have follicleitis and I didn't have it before but now I have it not only on my bald spots but now on my face on my chest and butt and inner thighs and back and front of my legs and the hair I had that wasn't falling out now is falling out in globs. I noticed the bumps after my second time using it and just noticed my hair falling out more my 5 time using it and now I stopped at 8 times and I wash my hair every other day. I will Not use this anymore. I wanna cry so bad because I wanted it to get better not get worse.

mirilaws: As of Sept 2017, the FDA only has 1 complaint. There needs to be a central place where people report, and that's all we have, (even though they do not have recall authority, they can issue a warning at least and track the information). Call your FDA regional coordinator or file a medwatch complaint, but state which products you are using. My daughter had 100% loss from Wen. You can see her story on my channel. We are fighting to give the FDA the authority it needs to protect consumers of personal care products. (Basically all of us and our children!)

I tried a lot of thickening hair products and this is the only one works for me. And very soft in my hair without using conditioner.

So we purchased her a beautiful wig and style our sister cried because we helped her return to her pretty self and didn’t think about it til I just heard from my youngest daughter that told me my great niece had been selling that very product and she’s told me momma that place We told u about the wigs the girl that had owned the shop told her she said I used to sale that product And I used it my self and she said oh my hair had broken off to right below my ears an had balding occurred all over my head now the combination of my sisters medication and the shampoo had a profound effect on my sister so today I’m gonna call my older sister and tell her I’m not sure if her hair will come back or not so if you are using that product STOP it’s not worth that please use some other shampoo the girl who owned the Shop stopped using that an has joined in on the law suits against that company monat she said as a beautician she’d recommend to anyone stop using it NOW! I'm not into beauty care so it's not that interesting to me but I figured I'd look into it anyway if it would help bring in a little extra money. I have looked into this company and this video was a woman is not telling the whole truth and what really happened. I am a pet groomer and I have great knowledge of ingredients used in shampoos and ECT..pet hair and fur is not like human hair but I still know what's good or not and Monat does put very good ingredients in their products. But just like any product out there if you sense you got an allergic reaction to a product doesn't mean it's bad for everyone. Just use common sense and stop using it.
