New Concerns Over Monat Hair Products
As consumer complaints about hair loss and scalp sores were piling up across the country, the FDA sent inspectors to the Florida facility where Monat products are made, and a federal report shows inspectors found "insanitary conditions." Darcy Spears reporting.
Tonight, a federal investigation into a trendy line of hair care products reveals concerns about the company's manufacturing plants. Well. Contact 13 chief investigator darcy spears first exposed consumer complaints about monet, hair care back in march tonight. Well, she's got the results of an fda, inspection and darcy explains why the agency says monae's products could be contaminated as consumer complaints about hair loss and scalp sores were piling up across the country. They point to new testing they paid for showing their products are non-irritating, hypoallergenic and dermatologically safe on all skin types, but 10 lawsuits and about 300 adverse event. Reports filed with the fda say otherwise. I literally had almost a baseball size of hair. In my hand, she's lost, i would say three quarters of it. Her hair is breaking off. Monet'S line is sold mostly on social media through multi-level marketing. The products are advertised to promote hair stability and growth, but multiple lawsuits from san, diego indianapolis, oklahoma, city, phoenix, las vegas and more say: customers have experienced significant hair loss or thinning and other complications such as itching scalp, irritation, sores and cystic acne after using monad products. I can't do it. I cannot sell something that does this to women: men, children. It was extremely hard to deal with las vegas erin ostby used to sell monet as one of its market partners. She stopped after losing her own hair. My dad used to always say i was like samson from the bible. I got my power from my hair, so it was. Several months later, the fda released this report, which found monae cosmetics being prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions, whereby it may have become contaminated with filth. The report notes multiple products were at risk of cross-contamination due to open reactor lids and missing protective caps on hoses used to pump product a reactor ready to process. A new batch of hair care products still had old product residue even after being cleaned multiple times by facility staff and empty containers of rejuva beads were left uncovered and exposed in the filling line after employees finished their work day in march before the fda's report was Released monate co-founder luis erdanetta posted on facebook live about the inspection and the report that we have this morning from them that they are leaving the office now is that everything is fine. It'S uh, warranties that we are doing the things as the things need to be done. An fda legal expert. We spoke to says this report falls on the mild side of the enforcement spectrum and contains some fairly common issues, but does note some minor violations of the federal food, drug and cosmetic act. Monat says the fda's report contains nothing of significant concern. A spokesperson claims. It'S like the manufacturing facility getting an a grade or maybe an a minus, but the fda says it would never assign a grade. The fda does not approve cosmetic products or certify product safety or quality, but the agency did take samples of monade products for further testing. So far, there is no evidence that contamination resulted from the unsanitary conditions. All the lawsuits against monad have been consolidated in a florida court and the legal action is ongoing. Tamara Bradshaw: An acquaintance offered to sell me Monat products this evening but after seeing reviews and reading about lawsuits I can't see trying these products now. There's is obviously something going wrong with certain hair types. Maybe they are experiencing allergic reactions. The lady who offered to sell it to me said it made her hair smooth and healthier. Her hair looked healthy but it's super thin. I hope they solve the mystery so they can keep helping the people who like it but wrecking people hair, causing hair to fall out in matted clumps is horrible. And that poor little girl. A shampoo shouldn’t be doing this. My friend works for the company and she says it’s normal and that it’s “new growth” and that my hair is going through a shedding faze. Gina Lee: I had the same issues with monat. Hair falling out and thinning. My hormone levels etc all checked out normal. I drink tons of water. Take omegas. The only difference was using monat. Every month my hair got worse and worse. 6 months. It is nasty stuff. And the sales reps are aggressive and will blame you-vs admitting their products arent for everyone.

Ass and Cash: As a person with some experience with hair, I can tell you that there is no “detox phase”. Your hair needs the natural oils it builds up over time to hydrate your hair. So shampooing once a day is a big no-no too. Once every other day is perfect. And dry shampoo is your best friend. ALWAYS condition your hair with non-sulfate conditioners as sulfates dry out your hair. Also stay away from sulfates in your shampoos. You want a non lathering shampoo so it strips the dirt from your hair but keeps the natural oils which help with the shine of your hair btw. An ingredient in the Monat Revive Shampoo, Benzyl Alcohol, is associated with contact allergies which will cause redness, itching, swelling, the symptoms people are saying they have from this stuff. Also the shampoo has two oxylated ingredients. Which made wrong can be carcinogenic. I just don’t understand why it’s so hard to call your hair stylist and ask them what products they’d recommend? I do it all the time and I color and bleach my hair to hell and back, and have minimal damage. Researching and admitting you’re wrong is a great thing. It shows you’re a good person.
Sonya Dickinson: I was a market partner and initially, my hair looked fabulous using these products; after about 8 months of use, my hair started breaking off and thinning in a very alarming manner. I went to my stylist and there was a 3" difference in the back of my hair. My hair was so damaged and thinned out that I have started wearing wigs in the hopes that my hair will grow out and recover. I stopped selling the product immediately when this happened and I let my clients know I what happened to me and that I would no longer be distributing it. I have no idea why it does this to some people and not to others.

I applaud the effort to spread the word that a product could cause extreme hair loss. A woman's hair is her crowning glory and women are being robbed of that and they deserve to be heard and to receive compensation.

No more build up on my scalp, I can go a few days without shampooing which I can't do with any other shampoo, and I've had quite a bit of hair regrowth. Tammy Kimble: Not saying people dont experience reactions, but as a hair stylist of 38 years who has worked with many products, along with chemicals that can do some real damage if used the wrong way, I can say I've never seen anyone have this type of reaction to haircare products. I have seen that overuse of volume shampoos/conditioners can cause hair breakage as they tend to strip the hair of its essential oils. Too much protein can have a similar result. That being said, those issues can solved by a simple change of products. Another issue we see, that is not connected to the use of any product is alopecia areata. These are bald spots, caused by different stress factors, that range in size from the size of a dime to the whole side of the head. Issues with hair loss and sores on the scalp are generally indicators of an internal issue or genetic. I do have one client that occasional gets sores on her scalp, but this is an issue she has always been aware of and she has to be selective about what she uses on her hair. This is a great big world with lots of people having varying body chemistries. What works great for one person might spell disaster for another. All haircare companies strive to make products that benefit their customer base, but unfortunately they cant predict how each individual will react to them. That is why you, the consumer, must use your own wisdom when it comes to the products you use. To say that a product or brand is altogether bad based on your experience with it just isnt logical. There are way too many factors involved to jump to that conclusion. I see nothing wrong in humbly contacting the company and expressing your concerns. If done in right way the company will seek to find solutions. If not, just dont buy their products. With all the products out there you are sure to find some that will give you the results you are looking for. Your hair stylist would be a great place to start in finding those that are best for you
WITH Sink Strainer-Karen: I started using Monat in August 2018. I had to stop over a month later. My scalp itched constantly and was beet red! I had red circles around both of my eyes. Never saw an improvement in hair quality. My hair was rather limp and lack luster with this product. I would never recommend it to another! But I have a box full of product sitting on the floor in my bathroom I would gladly sell to someone who thinks this stuff is fabulous.

Gina b Monat: I don't know why people act like it is big news that someone has a reaction to an ingredient. People have reactions to ingredients every day when it comes to products, foods, environmental factors..etc. Although I do know "some" of these claims are completely false, I'm not in denial that there are going to be people around the world that may have a reaction to an ingredient in the Monat products. There are people that started using Monat because they may have used a different product line, Salon grade or non Salon grade, and had severe thinning and major scalp issues prior to using Monat which is why they decided to use Monat. But we are not blaming those brands for their hair loss and scalp issues. I have used several Salon brands in the past that made my hair gross, scalp very itchy and very flaky, Kevin Murphy being one of them. I just stopped using it instead of bashing the company. Just something in the shampoo my scalp did not like. I know a lot of people that currently use redken products and have terrible see-through hair, breakage and are losing clumps of hair in the shower but they are not blaming the product. The majority of hair loss issues are caused from something medically or internally wrong. People also need to remember their hair is going to go through shedding phases. Follicles shed at different times in different rates. It is also normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs a day which also freaks some people out. People just need to have an open mind. Some of these claims are so ridiculous . Monat would not still be striving with thousands upon thousands of happy customers if these products were poison. Again everyone's going to have their own experience with a particular brand whether it is negative or positive but to go and try to bash and tear a company down because of it is absolutely ridiculous. I have seen people straight up lie about claims just to get attention on Facebook. They claim their kid lost all of their hair on a certain date but then you see photos of their kid around that date with a full head of hair. Just remember, don't believe everything you see and read on the internet if you have a bad experience with a product line, stop using it immediately and go by a different line - Simple

After I started using nothing but Monat products, my hairdresser told me she has never seen my hair healthier and no split ends. I told her I had been using Monat. That visit was just for her to flat iron my hair for me. Because I had already used my Monat products before going to her I told her she couldn’t use any of her products (heat protectant or oil) on my hair and just flat iron my style. She was amazed I needed nothing else. After watching this video, my first thoughts were; Are they using the Monat products correctly ? What other products did these people use in conjunction with Monat ? How’s their diet ? Stress level(s) Getting enough sleep Etc....

I find it hard to believe a FORTUNE 500 company with yrly earnings.. of 4.8 million dollars annual gross sales. Slandering and false testimony is called defimation of character. I had baldings because of L'Oreal, Suave and Tresemme. I used Monat and got my hair back. Just because it didn't work for you don't mean it won't work for anyone else.
