Hello, i'm dr benita ratan and this channel is dedicated to skin care for skin of color. As you know, i'm a doctor, but i'm also a cosmetic formulator, specifically for skin of color. Now today's video is actually quite uh personal to me, because it is basically my semi-issue, which is my flaky itchy scalp, curly, hair, routine um without heat. I don't really, although today i have blow dried my hair, i actually haven't blow dried, my hair for a whole year, because i'm trying to not damage my hair, especially as i age um. Unfortunately, hair will fall out as we age and we want to do the least amount to it that we can, in fact everything that we do should really be from a healthy perspective. So you know for me my whole 20s. My hair was basically blonde. I think, from 16 years old to about 30 years old, i had blonde hair, and now i think, oh, my goodness, i would not go near peroxide if you paid me i'm now 37 and we have different ideas of what we need our hair to be. So if you have itchy flaky scalp - and this is something that really bothers you - i hope this video helps you because it you know everything i do massively has helped me and i really don't suffer with it at all. Now that sounds good to you. Give me a thumbs up, let's dive right in it actually just occurred to me. Do you want me to make your video on how to grow healthy, thick hair, because there are some basic mistakes that i'm seeing being made actually with hair growth um? And if you want me to do a full video on that, i'm more than happy to just write down below, don't forget to do a video review on hair growth, and i will make that for you right. So what are the common issues of a flaky scalp? So there are a few, the first one would probably be um people not rinsing shampoo out of their hair and that residue can lead, can build up and lead to irritation. So that isn't my issue, but it can be so make sure you really do wash your shampoo out of your hair and it's one of those things that are really hard to know when the shampoo has left your hair completely. But what i tend to do is i tend to wring my hair out in the shower and i'd wait for the suds to to the point where i don't have any suds anymore or any bubbles. When i do that - and i know, then, that i've got no more surfactant in my hair. The second issue is having contact dermatitis so an allergy to something that you're putting on your scalp, which is why i tend to avoid any fragrance in any of my shampoos or conditioners conditioner. Generally anyway, you don't put on the scalp. You put it on the rest of the hair, because you're trying to smooth the hair cuticle, it doesn't need to go on your scalp because it tends to make your hair heavy and you lose volume which is not something that women want. And so i'm not so worried about the condition. To be honest, it's more your shampoo which you're rubbing into your scalp. You have to make sure that it has no fragrance in it because with wash off products, the percentage of fragrance is allowed to be higher than leave on products and that's why, with your body, washes with your shampoo, it smells a lot stronger than your creams. Do you know the whatever fruity flavor they've got going on in that shampoo bottle is going to be stronger than in any of your leave-on creams, and that is a major source of concern, because one percent of the population are allergic to fragrance and imagine you know A million of you are using fragrance shampoo, tens of thousands of you are going to have irritation to it. That can be seen as a flaky itchy scalp, which is really something i want us to all steer clear of now. My issue is sensitivity to yeast called malassezia, so we all have malassezia on our scalp, but some people are more sensitive to it and some people have excess growth of it and that leads to excess cell growth um, and that then leads to irritation and flaky scalp. So the problem for me with a flaky scalp, was that when i would wear a black jumper, you would see my white flakes and my husband would, instead of kissing me, he'd, come and just start wiping the flakes away, which is just not what any wife wants. So that was my number one problem, and my number two problem was that it was leading to brittle hair, and so my hair was damaged and um not growing. At the rate i wanted to grow at and just not looking healthy, which is you know again something that we all want so taking care of your scalp gives you healthy hair. I can't stress that enough. The mistake i see people making is that they'll put you know, leave on conditioners, etc, which is great. You know, masks and conditioners are great for smoothing the cuticle but they're not going to help with growth of hair because it's dead at this point. This is dead. This is dead keratin. We have to start at the root, that's where, where hair is basically manufactured, so evidence has come out that when you have an inflamed scalp or a flaky scalp, you have dry, brittle, hair, that's easily damaged and that isn't really able to grow past a certain length And just generally, you know it starts to look scraggly, and you know you just you don't feel great in your hair, so really taking care of your scalp is absolutely fundamental. It'S not, and it's something we don't learn early on is something that we learn later. When we've already got the problem, i don't want that for our children. I want our children to have healthy, scalps their whole lives, so they don't have that itchiness and they, you know just don't, go through the same problems that we go through. That'S the aim, so i actually have quite severe seborrheic dermatitis or you know dandruff, which can really be irritating, and so i use diprasalic, which is a steroid ointment, that's prescription only. So if yours is that severe, then this is something that your doctor may well prescribe to you, uh and that's got steroids in it. So it's got your betamethasone, but it's also got salicylic acid in it, which is great because it softens up the top layer of skin and so allows the steroid to enter because otherwise don't forget, you know: you've got mounds of excess skin. That um you've got extra growth of skin cells, and so how are you supposed to get in to reduce inflammation? You need the salicylic acid to soften those skin cells. So it's a fantastic ointment for people. You know who have it quite severe and you know really need it. So then the next one is so. What i do is i'd use that once a week and i'd use it it's sort of everywhere, because it's recurrent, but it's also moving meaning you. You might have one itchy area at one point and then another itchy or another point, so you really do want to get into the whole scalp, because you want to try and reduce any future inflammation and don't forget it's recurrent the second i stop. It will come back again, and i know that so it's refractory it. It doesn't end. You have to be on top of it all the time. So what i would do is on a non-filming day. I would basically put onto my fingertips and i'd massage it into my scalp i'd leave after about five hours, so i really make sure it's got time for it to work. I don't wear it overnight because i don't want to come off my pillow um and then it'll be on my face and then i'll get acne and you know nobody needs that. So i just i do it during the day drop my kids to school, then do it don't look sexy at all that day, my poor husband, oh and then five hours later, i use my ketoconazole shampoo, two percent and it's not it's medicated, but it's non-fragrance. So i love ketoconazole shampoo. For that reason, there are very very few shampoos on the market that don't have fragrance and ketoconazole. It tends to not have fragrance and because it's for inflamed scalps, so it wouldn't make sense to put fragrance in so i use that and again i massage it into my scalp because don't forget the ointment is quite thick and can leave your hair feeling quite greasy. So again i massage that into my scalp about 30 minutes. Before i have a shower and again it's got time for it to absorb into my scalp and then i wash it off in the shower. Then i put conditioner just on the strands of hair and when i come out because i've got really curly hair, i tend to put in a leave-in conditioner on top, so the leave-in conditioner i use is cantu um. It does have fragrance in it, but i don't put on my scalp. I put it only on my hair and then what i do is i use catwalk by tiggy as this one, which is brilliant. It'S like a gum, um and i basically put my hair upside down and i scrunch it when it's still wet, because i don't want to use any heat and i'm you know it's really strange. You know my whole life. I'Ve spent straightening my hair and then now i feel like at this age. I'M suddenly loving my curly hair, and i don't know i don't know why i didn't like it before. It was all about the straight hair before, but this way it means that i i'm loving the hairstyle um, but also i'm not putting any heat on my hair, and you know, as we age your hair is already going to thin. You know no matter what you do, it's already gon na thin. You can take all the supplements that you want and you know, use the products that you need, but you know it's just the direction that this is what happens with age, so try and minimize heat. Try and minimize dyeing your hair, and so what i do is i put on the ends and i scrunch it upwards scrunch it like near my scalp as well, and sometimes i'll even pin it up a little bit just to not allow the weight of it to Come down so that i have some curls on my scalp as well, which i really like, don't forget, i'm in the comments section for one hour at the launch of every single video. Manisha Natarajan: Need separate videos for scalp issues like dandruff, seboric dermatitis, scalp psoriasis doctor and also for healthy hair and food diaries for healthy hair and glowing skin

One H Day: Dr V, can you please list the products/ingredients mentioned on the videos in the description box? That would help massively when referring back to your recommendations as right now I'm having to rewind and screenshot when you mention it on the video. Sidenote - The way you pop up ingredients etc on your videos is brilliant btw!! ❣️

Nikahat Parveen: Hey Dr. V! Thank you so much for your videos. They are REALLY helpful. I'm a brown girl in my early 20s and I have just started learning about skincare. I didn't pay much attention to it before but now I'm just starting out and all this info can be overwhelming. *Could you PLEASE make a video about basic skincare to restore the skin barrier and how to progress from there to layering more advanced stuff (if need be)?* Again thank you so much for your videos. ❤️❤️

Marjie Richard: Hello Dr. V! Definitely a big YES for the hair growth videos. Thank you so much for the time invested in the SOC family.

GirlEnchanted: I think as South Asians, curly hair routines are so much less common. In my experience anyways, a lot of South Asians I know in friends/family often just straighten their hair (if curly/wavy) or some are lucky enough to have naturally straight hair haha. Thank you so much for this video! It's like this was made for my hair type ❤️ Just a quick q - at what point are you combing/brushing your hair? Is it in the shower before you out the leave in conditioner? How often do you brush your hair? And how do you refresh your curls in between? Embracing my curly hair is a new thing for me so apologies for all the questions!

Ayisha Bako: Don’t forget to do a video on hair growth Dr V!! Will it be applicable for Afro hair?

Sakshi Singh: Hi Doc... I have the exact same issue as yours and It came to a point that I could see dry flaky patched on my forehead and I've lost a lot of hair due to this issue. I read up on Seborrheic Dermatitis and found that people use "Coal Tar" shampoo for this as well. Would really appreciate your opinion on this. Does it really help??

Kam J: I’ve had this issue for years, love this video and I’ve been bingeing all of your videos over the past few days, they’re awesome, and I’ve learned so much. If possible, when you have the time, I would love a paula’s choice routine vid, similar to what you did for the ordinary. I think what you’re doing is phenomenal. Thank you so much!

Cortge 3: I just got into the curly girl method for my wavy hair, but I'd love to also combine it with proper ingredients from your recommendations. Im not sure if protein moisture and porosity and so on are so important as they say, and chelating shampoos for hard water area... Etc. You get the idea anyway! Thank you!

Rita Herrington: This video is a great education for all. People need to know that they are not alone in with these issues and these issues are NORMAL. And yes, I am loving my natural hair now that I am older. No added heat!

Najma Mohamed: Hey Dr V, I love your videos! I got keratin treatment for my hair 4 years ago and used the salon-recommended brand kerastase (sulfur free) and it left a dry scalp patch on the front of my head which makes me feel really insecure. No matter how much I wash it, the patch wont go away. I went to my GP about it and he gave me Daktarin 2% which did not help at all. Is there anything I can do for it?

garythesnail: YES PLEASE more videos on how to make a healthy hair care routine!

Hema Harrysingh: Absolutely love the information you've shared for scalp care; I definitely will try your tips as I have similar issues and hair type. Just wondering if you would be open to sharing your makeup routine . Again thank you for sharing so much valuable information in such a selfless manner

Mimi Wetu: Hello Dr. V. Thank you so much for these videos you put out for us to learn. It’s amazing! Did you already do a video on hair growth? I am waiting for that one for my Miss Afro

Vivian Y: I’m all for hair growth and care videos thanks again Dr. V for all your info!

Saloni Kapur: Hi Dr V! Thanks for this and for all your amazing videos! ☺️ Are essential oils OK in shampoos and conditioners?

Anushka Mishra: Hey V! I don't wear makeup except for occasions, I have extremely dry skin. Please let us know about a simple AM PM routine♥️

Anna Harris: Don’t forget todo a video on hair growth dr v we need this one! ❤️

Pratyu Px: Hey Dr.V! So thankful for your videos. Love each and every video. Could you please suggest us how to treat oily scalp....

Nikita Jose: AHHH! With the summers my scalp is a mess.. I can't believe you put this video up as soon as I kept thinking about wanting a solution for this ...❤️❤️❤️what are the odds haha!

wendy Dyer: Your hair is stunning Dr V. I'm a huge fan of your videos. I'm a sufferer of mast cell activation disorder, so I have severe fragrance allergies and scalp issues. I'm having luck with Eucerin at the mo XX

laxman soma: This is the first time I am on time to watch your video I know I am going off board but can you please do a routine for dry skin for kids aged 1-5 or above too also more physical sunscreens which are available in usa like copper tone or blue lizard much love Swetha

Cindy N: Dr V, what do you think about the Ordinary's "Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density"? It is applied to the scalp and lots of people seem to have success with it, and those that don't notice hair growth, say they at least noticed it got rid of their scalp issues and/or they saw less hair falling out. Could you do a review on this?

Avantika Kasi: Hey Dr.V, I’m only 18 years old and some strands of my hair are already greying. I know you cannot reverse greying but if you knew some ways to prevent it could you make a video on it?

Areej Qureshi: For the Facial Pigmentation kit, can the product be applied around the eye area, or should the eye area be avoided?

Meenakshi poonam yadav: Hi doctor, first of all thanks for the great job you are doing.. could you please make a video on clarifying whether physical exercises trigger malasma (because it certainly creates heat and burning sensation on the face at least case) or not. I don't do exercise because of fear of getting my malasma worse. Thank you.

Cyril Santos: By the way, does Minoxidil really works in thickening your hair? How many percentage of it does help in hair growth? Thanks!

Anisha Ahmed: Dr V, Full video on hair growth please!! x ❤️

RueMinty: Yes please do a video on helping grow hair thick!! My hair used to be THICK my entire life all the way up until the last couple of years (35-37) I would give anything to have my thick hair back. I used to have it cut to thin it out bc it was that thick!

plantkindness: I’ve heard it’s better to blow dry the hair so that the cuticle isn’t staying open as long as if we were to air dry it. That it’s more damaging die the cuticle to remain open so long. What are your thoughts?

Anika Mistry: Love all your videos so much, I’ve truly learnt so much <3 Please don’t forget to do one on hair growth!

NancYolima Zigo: Hello Dr. V! How do I stop saggy skin? as I get older I have noticed that my skin is not as tight as it used to be... I don't have a lot of hyperpigmentation thanks to following your advice but things are getting loose here.

Yusra Sherif: Dr V! Please can you address whether these anti dandruff treatments cause further hair loss or oily scalps? I have been told over and over again that you should stay away from anti dandruff treatments as they cause other complications, hair loss being very common. It’s so confusing!! I really appreciate this video and hope you make more videos on seborrheic dermatitis:)

TheConscious Psych: Hi Dr. V, this was such an informative video! Could you please do a review of the brand: Calia Natural, they claim to do lots of natural fragrance-free hair products for a range of hair conditions and people seem to have glowing reviews of them but I was wondering what a doctors opinion might be ingredients-wise and which of their products you would recommend for different hair conditions. Thank you!!

Marlen Anguiano: OMG thank you so much for this video!!!! I think is really important to emphasize how we are and love our hair. I have curly hair and I feel that in some advertising curly hair us messy. I would love if you make a video on healthy growing hair!!

L O L: Thank you so much for this video, it was so useful!!! I would love to see the video on how to grow thicker hair. Also, can you use the ketoconazole shampoo every time you wash your hair for a long period of time or is this just for limited use?

Happy ARMY 💜: Yes ! We need a video for hair growth, Dr. V ❤️

Nikita Patel: Yes, please to grow healthy thick hair!! My hair started falling and thinning since my university days and now I'm in my 30s. It's sad to know once i had lovely thick hair.

Priss Kiv: Thank you so much for all that you do- you are God-sent. I finally feel empowered in my skin knowing that I can confidently buy products that will nourish and promote longevity. And teach my child the same! Merci!

Olivia: Yes to a video on healthy hair growth! Perhaps investigate products suggested to have a lower pH to complement that of the hair (especially curly hair) and scalp.

Myself: Hi Dr.V! I am using Tretinoin but I also want to start using Lactic Acid. Can I use them at alternate nights? Also, does face shaving count as exfoliation? Much love♡

Arsh Kaur: video on hair growth please and Thank you very much for your efforts in making all these amazing videos, lots of love!

Abriyah Yasha-rahla: Yes‍♀️, we definitely would like to see the Hair growth instruction video please❣️

Annissa Amegbe: I am allergic to fragrance shampoo. Finding a fragrance free shampoo for my curly-kinky hair was so difficult. Fragrance does nothing for hair so I could not understand why it is so difficult to find fragrance free shampoo and conditioner. VaniCream was the only brand a the time I could use but it made my hair kind of dry. Then I used baby shampoo, CeraVe, but I did not feel it was cleaning my hair. Then I saw Seen which was develop by a dermatologist who notice hair care products were effecting people's skin. I really love the Seen shampoo. It is so moisturizing. Seen offers fragrance free shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. Other products that are fragrance free Briogeo (best conditioner), Jessicurls, and Curl Mix. All are USA products, so sorry if you live in other countries. I did asked other brands that I love if they will please offer fragrance free products. If we all write to them telling them there is a needed and demand we could have more options.

Abi: Thankyou doctor ❤️ can we use the ordinary peptides hair serum while breastfeeding ? If not can you please suggest something safe

Shyra: Thanks for this video Dr V! Do you only shampoo your scalp and not the rest of your hair? My hair is curly but also brittle and frizzy and I don’t like to let it down or wear it natural when i’m out, it makes me feel ugly since it looks big and untamed. I don’t know how to deal with it. It’s also dyed, gets tangled and lots of hairfall! How can I achieve healthy and luscious hair while being a curly-haired girl :((

Inola Su: Thanks for all the great videos! Could you please review the brand Shiseido. Particularly the expert sun protector spf 50 and clear stick UV protector. This is the only sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast on my skin. Many Thanks!!!

mrsmir: Dr V. I received the email regarding your hyperpigmentation kit for skin and I immediately clicked on it which then took me to your site, yet after reading about the cream I came across a section that said this cream can cause darkening of the skin . Why would your cream made to treat hyperpigmentation make it worse? Please explain this as I will not be purchasing if this isn't explained.

E K C S: There’s a severe lack of fragrance free products that are good for thicker curly/coily hair I have type 3c hair and finding products that work well for my hair and scalp is hard . It’s a frustrating journey! I’m not severely allergic to them but I try to avoid where I can. Please do one on hair growth please!
