Alisha Beats Lupus: Healthy Hair Care During Treatment

Find product and tool links, along with more info about Alisha's diagnosis and how you can support her at http://moknowshair.com/alishabeatslupu...

My dear friend Alisha, who you all recognize from lots of tutorials on my blog and YouTube channel, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 Lupus Nephritis, an autoimmune disease that affects more than 60% of those with lupus, causing inflammation in the kidneys.

Just a few weeks ago, Alisha’s life changed in the blink of an eye. Her doctors have prescribed chemotherapy treatments for at least six months to save her kidneys. In addition to treatments, she’s had to completely retool her daily routine.

How you can help:

Your prayers and kind words of encouragement can be shared via social media (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) using hashtag #alishabeatslupus.

If you would like to donate to Alisha's GoFundMe campaign to help her offset expenses of treatment, and learn more about her diagnosis, you can do so here: http://www.gofundme.com/rcrhgg

Suggested hair care regimen for Alisha during treatment:

I wanted to provide Alisha some suggested adjustments to her product line-up to ensure a solid combination of strength, moisture retention and scalp health support.

Products:

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Brigeo “Don’t Despair, Repair” Deep Conditioning Mask (every other week)

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie (alternate with mask)

TGIN Green Tea Super Moist Leave-In Conditioner

TGIN Twist & Define Cream

TGIN Argan Replenishing Hair and Body Serum

Tools:

Huetiful Hair Steamer

Ion Ceramic Blow Dryer

Denman Styling Brush

Conair Hooded Dryer

Total time:

Total style time was one hour and twenty minutes, minus the trim time.

Keep and care:

To minimize manipulation and added stress on the hair, Alisha will sleep in the pineapple and fluff in the morning. She will convert her wash-n-go to a high puff or bun days later until it is time to wash again. Her wash cycle is once per week.

My beautiful sweet, dear friend Alicia, who you all recognize from lots of tutorials on my channel, was recently diagnosed with stage-four lupus nephritis, which is an autoimmune disease that affects more than 60 % of those with lupus and causes inflammation in the kidneys. Just a few weeks ago, Alicia's life changed in the blink of an eye. She will undergo chemotherapy for at least the next five months to save her kidneys. She'S had to completely retool her entire daily routine down to monitoring every morsel of food and adjusting to more than 30 pounds of weight, gain from medications, exhaustion, frequent headaches, memory loss and swelling and aching in the joints. However, I refuse to allow Alicia to hide and go through this in the dark. I know she is strong and she's resilient and that this is a test that will become a testimony soon enough. She'S agreed to. Let me share her story with you all in hopes of being a blessing to anyone going through something similar to help Alicia as much as possible. I wanted to adjust her haircare regimen to give her a solid combination of strength, moisture retention and scalp health support. To begin, I am she employing two times with Carol's Daughter, black vanilla, sulfate, free shampoo. I chose this one for two reasons: one it's highly economical and incredibly well made at the same time two because it covers all the bases I've learned for Alicia right now, soy protein for moisturizing strength, aloe for moisture and rosemary for scalp health and added bonus. It smells amazing. Now I am going to apply breezy. Oh, don't despair, repair, deep conditioning mask once I found out Alicia was going to chemo. I immediately began looking for an elasticity treatment to help her preserve her hair as much as possible. I am really in love with the blend of ingredients and the incredible slip of this mask. This super hydrating mask is made with avocado almond and Argan oils keratin protein for strength, super conditioning, rosehip oil, aloe for moisture and essential vitamins, b5 Dae and biotin. This treatment is specifically designed to improve, elasticity and install moisture to prevent breakage. I am recommending this treatment for Alicia every other wash day which, for her is once a week. This 5.25 ounce jar will cover her for at least 3 treatments on the alternate week. She can use the Carol's Daughter, black, vanilla, hair smoothie for her deep condition and treatment. It has many of the same ingredients as the ratio mask like a load almond oil, vitamins, b5 and E, but in place of the keratin protein it has soy protein. So Lee is focused more on moisture binding as a carrier. It pulls moisture and it helps migrate. It into the hair shaft. The keratin and the other treatment is going to help replenish any protein lost in the chemo treatment process. But since Alecia does not have a protein deficiency in her hair, I don't want her to overload it. So that's why I'm having her alternate in the Carol's Daughter, conditioner with soy protein, a less powerful protein, but still essential, but just looking at how taut the curls are with this bridge. No treatment and application lets me know that it is a good choice of treatment for her to alternate in for proper elasticity and protein moisture balance. Now I am going to sit Alisha under my hyouta full hair steamer for 20 minutes to allow the bridge EO mask to penetrate steam and Stiles more moisture and helps curls retain or regain shape. I'M newer to the steaming game than some of you, I'm sure, but after using it on my friends and myself, I am a believer stain treatments, increase overall, moisture retention dramatically after rinsing out the treatment. I am going to style Alisha in a low manipulation style, a wash and go using tgin products. I am first applying the new tgin green tea, super moist, leave-in conditioner and then we'll give Alisha a trimmer. We haven't trimmed her hair and more than months. So it's time I am doing a standard trim from the crown to create some layers for shape. Alicia has type 3c hair and rarely heat styles it so her ends only need trimming about twice a year. Trimming depends on your hair. There is no hard fast rule on it. Just pay attention to if your ends appear to have less density than the rest of your hair and if they seem to dry out easily also an indicator that you need. A trim is seeing little pieces of hair on your shoulder and on the floor I always recommend seeing a stylist that is comfortable with textured hair for a shaped cut or trim, and you shouldn't have to straighten your hair to get a trim. I'Ve been asked about that a lot in the comments, if you don't want to straighten, don't find another stylist who can trim your hair in its natural state. If that's, what you prefer, the tgin leave-in conditioner has green tea, aloe juice, argan oil, honey, sweet almond and sunflower oils, along with vitamins, E and b5. Many of these ingredients are found in the shampoo and treatment masque I already used. Are you seeing the pattern here? I absolutely love this leave-in, it's super creamy, but it spreads like the liquid leave-in, which to me means it's formulated. Well, it doesn't leave a greasy film, but it provides amazing slip to aid in detangling and I'm convinced that can be used all on its own to wash and go based on how Alicia's curls are responding to it. Now, however, I want to give Alicia a bit of halt, so these curls stay put all week, so I am using the tgin twist and defined cream. It has vitamin E and good old soybean oil to carry the coconut oil into the hair shaft for lasting moisture. I am simply smoothing the sanding using my Denman brush to evenly distribute. Then I am twirling pieces to clump curls together. I love products that work for different styles, even though this cream is called twist and defined, implying that it's for twist or braid outs. So far, I have used it for a flexi rod set and a braid out on myself and now and go for Alicia. This is an all-purpose styling cream which, in my book, makes it a winner Alicia, like all coyly. Girls has about fifty percent shrinkage after styling, but because she is in the 3s, her hair stretches when wet. So I am going to try a different drying method than what I normally do. I'M going to have her sit under my hooded dryer on low heat until her hair is about 80 % dry instead of having her air dry for that time. About 15 minutes later here is Alicia's hair. As you can see, it stayed stretched dry and get faster under the dryer vs air drying said it kept the curls elongated, because the dry time was sped up to take advantage of the water weight in the strands. Now I am going to apply a bit of the tgin argan, replenishing, hair and body serum and diffuse the rest of the way with my eye on ceramic blow-dryer. This serum is great for pre-poo treatments styling, as you can see here, and for after shower moisture for your skin. The herbal blend of coconut olive argan peach kernel, jojoba oil and hibiscus flowers make this serum my only smell like babies and blessings, but also increases circulation in the scalp and helps low, shedding and breakage total style time. The trim was an hour and a half Alicia sleeps in the pineapple on a satin, pillowcase and flux. In the morning many moons ago, I got Alicia off of the daily twisting routine and turned her into a wash and go girl, so I'm sure she won't have to over manipulate her hair, which will help her on the shedding end, as she goes through treatment. She'S not gon na have any problems with styling, because her hair usually makes it several days before she turns it into a high plus for the remaining days. Until wash day. If you restyle your hair daily, you should consider finding a style that won't require the excessive manipulation. / manipulation can cause shedding and breakage, not to mention loss of elasticity. If you feel like your hair, isn't growing, that's simply not true. It'S breaking at the same rate that it's growing, so you are not experiencing length retention. You have to find ways to tug and pull less as of now. Alicia'S hair is behaving the same as we are used to, but over the coming months of treatments we don't know how much shedding may occur or if she will experience any dehydration of the scalp. So this lineup of products will give her the moisture and strength her hair needs throughout the week with proper elasticity and flexible hold. So she could manipulate her hair less but still be stylish. You can find product information and links to everything used by clicking the link in the About section below also there's more information about Alicia's condition, while she is employed and has health insurance. As we all know, coverage does not fully cover if you can and feel led to do so. Please consider supporting our sister Alicia as she faces this illness head-on, with love light and in God's sight the link to her GoFundMe campaign is below and at mo nose. Hair dot-com slash, Alicia, beats lupus

Jazmin Bailey: I'm 20 yrs old and got diagnosed with SLE Lupus last October. IT IS A BITCH! Not only am I fatigued all the time but I can't even do the things I enjoy anymore like walking the mall or going to the beach because the sun causes flares and drains any ounce of energy I did have! I've been suffering from depression because I ask God everyday why me!? But I know God gives us nothing we can't handle. Good luck with Chemo Alisha #WeAreLupusWarriors

Queerly Dispassionate: Wow, I went through this exact same diagnosis 4 years ago. Mo, you are amazing for sticking by her during this hard time, she will need you. If there is one thing I wish I had done while I was going through chemo and steroid therapy it would be to switch to a plant based diet. Going mostly raw vegan will help her body bounce back faster and help with the intense weight gain and body shame that steroids bring. Alisha, remember that you do not have to apologize for needing to rest. You don't have to keep up the same pace you did when you were healthy. Remind yourself daily that this is a healing process. Best of luck.

LightHearth29: ... You have such a beautiful spirit Mo. I love it! Alisha's hair looks great despite her illness. I am also being treated for a lupus condition. About two years ago, I lost lots of hair so I ended up cutting it all off. Thanks to prayer and your tutorials, my hair has grown back into a remarkably healthier state. :) I am praying for you, Alisha. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you, girl!

Shonie Elliott: I've been there, so I can totally relate. I went into renal failure in 2004, but I have thus been transplanted and my Lupus has stayed in remission for the most part. I control it with a healthy diet and daily physical activity. Be encouraged and keep smiling. I'm praying for you Alisha!

Tiana Brown: I am almost sure I can speak for most when I say that we feel like we know her because we have been watching her hair journey from the very beginning of your channel. Sending my well wishes, love, and paryers! :)

Penny Tovar: You can do it Alisha! Bless your heart! <3

LivingWithLupie: This video was so helpful for me. I was diagnosed with lupus at the age of 14, I'm 23 now and in the last couple of months I have entered the final stage of kidney disease and am in kidney failure. I am currently waiting on my mother and best friend to finish their final step/testing in the donor testing so that I can hopefully receive a kidney transplant sometime this summer. During my illness with lupus I experienced so much shedding and thinning of my hair. I am glad that I have finally found a video that I feel is not only helpful to me but can be to others around the world as well.
