Hey everyone kaylee your friendly neighborhood, hair stylist here and today we are reacting to and fact checking function of beauty for target. Let'S go once again, i saw something over and over and over again online and i needed to try it hi. Welcome to my life and this time it's function of beauty. This is available at target and essentially what it is is a line of shampoo and conditioner bases that you pick out based on your hair type, and then you pick out boosters or add-ins based on what you want for your hair and you mix it all together And you have a custom, shampoo and conditioner from the drugstore. It'S been a little while, since i was this excited about a new hair care launch and i'm very excited to break it down for you guys today. What i want to do is look at how they're marketing everything and then take a look at the ingredients and see how they stack up to the marketing claims, and i think that way i can help you decide whether this is going to be a good fit For you and your hair, i do think it's really fun to look at the ingredients and teach you about ingredients, because, even if you don't pick up these, you can go check out. What'S in your shower and see what ingredients are working for you or next time, you're buying products take a look at the ingredients and just be a little bit more informed, so we're going to go through it today we're going to talk all about it. I'M excited. Let'S jump in all right, first things: first, let me introduce you to function of beauty for target. Now. Function of beauty has been around for a long time as a customizable, shampoo and conditioner that you could customize and order online. They have a little quiz. You can select your fragrance and how strong the fragrance is from light to strong. You can choose the color. You can put your name on it. It'S a whole cool thing, but now they've made the jump to being available in target. So no longer do you have to do the whole thing online. It'S right there. You can go to the store pick it up the way they're doing it is that they have four shampoo bases and conditioners based on your hair type and those fall directly in line with our normal hair type numbers. So you've got number one straight number. Two wavy number three curly and number four coily and hypothetically each of the shampoos and conditioners are formulated for that hair type, but then the cool, the fun. The awesome part of this is that, then you pick out your boosters. They have 10 of these itty-bitty little boxes and inside you have these little pods. They look like this. You have one for your shampoo one for your conditioner. You mix them in you can mix and match up to three of these to get your desired results for your hair, and that is how you can customize your hair routine from the drugstore. So as far as i'm aware, this is the first ever customizable drugstore line. I can't think of anything else remotely similar. It'S also the lowest price point for customized hair care. So it's not only more easily accessible by just going to your store, but it's also less expensive. You'Ve got ten dollars for each of the bases and three dollars for each of the boosters so up to 29 for your entire hair care. The very last thing you need to know about the products as a whole is that they are sulfate. Free, paraben, free 90, plus percent. Naturally derived depends on the product cruelty, free vegan made with recycled plastic and 100 recyclable. We stand so that's the general idea. That'S what we're working with and i've got to say the bright colors, the promises of beautiful hair, all just like me in - and i was like on the target page just so excited, but the very first thing that i realized was like. First of all, i have straight hairs on my head and wavy hair is on my head, which shampoo do i pick and then i was like here's 10 different boosters. I want all of those things for my hair. How do i only pick three so we're gon na get into it? I want to break down all the different ingredients that will hopefully help you figure out if you're in between on anything and also let you know which of the things i would avoid. So, let's go to school, let's put on our hair, nerd glasses and get to work okey dokey! So i'm gon na break down the bases for you guys so that you kind of have an idea of what they do, what to expect, which ones to pick, because you might be like me and be on the line between which shampoo do i pick. I will talk you through it first things. First, this is a base formula right, so we are customizing it. We are adding in our actives later. When you look at this thing, it is bare bones: it is ready for add-ons so much so that the first seven ingredients in all of the shampoos are the exact same. It'S not uncommon, but you don't usually see it this clearly, because, usually you have additives in there because we're adding our own they're not there. Yet what we do know is the soapy base like what kind of base what kind of shampoo what kind of suds are. We working with here it's actually really cool. They have a few different kinds of surfactants which are cleansers and they are all known to be mild and non-irritating and sulfate free, but they're also all known to have really good, lather and foam, which i can attest to this shampoo. It is so satisfying to use it like foams up through the hair, and it's not hard to like move it around and get to all the areas of your scalp. It is a joy and then there are a couple of the actives in each of the formulas that set them apart. So for the straight shampoo, they decided to go with coconut fruit juice, which is extremely lightweight, definitely hydrating and conditioning, but the lightest of weights. I think that makes a lot of sense. A lot of people with straight hair want that added lift my hair's been straight most of my life. I know the struggle of the flat flat roots, so we don't want anything, that's adding in more oil or weight there. This takes that into consideration. Moving on to the wavy hair guys, the main ingredient is rice, vermin, extract and if you guys saw my last video on rice water, you know that i basically became a phd in rice and i love it. There are a ton of benefits if you want the whole spiel watch that video, but to surmise it is an antioxidant. It is really good at improving elasticity, it has uv protection and it has amino acids and vitamins. It does so much for your hair. It also really helps you to be able to brush nicely through your hair, so a very, very happy good ingredient, okay, curly, shampoo and coily shampoo. They are very, very similar. The only difference is the order of ingredients 13 through 17, which means there's some more of some ingredients and a little less of others. It is still different, but i would say if you're in the store and one is sold out, you can pick up the other. One no worries the cool thing is that they have flaxseed oil and chia seed extract for the flax seed oil, it hydrates and smooths. It improves elasticity, it strengthens, and it is great for the scalp chia seed extract is really well known for curly hair. It does a lot of great things. Restores omega-3s restores the cuticles. It helps with elasticity. It helps with protein, it's an antioxidant. It does a lot of really good things both of these great ingredients for curly and coily, hair they're, also good for the scalp. I do have to say. I really appreciate that all of the add-ins in the shampoos are not only good for hair but good for the scalp, because you're using your shampoo on the scalp, and so they took its role as like a scalp cleanser into consideration when formulating. That is artistry. And i appreciate it overall, picking out your ideal shampoo, i'm gon na say if you have mostly healthy happy hair, perhaps virgin minimally styled or just extremely robust. I would say the straight hair formula is for you very hydrating, not a lot of pump and circumstance. If your hair is wavy to straight, but a bit more damaged a bit more thirsty, maybe a bit more dry. Looking you're gon na, like the wavy hair, shampoo, a lot more curly and coily, i would say just go ahead and use it by default with the beauty of curly. Hair comes a little bit of porosity and i think that this formula would be best for that. If you're on that line, that little 2c3a line and you're not sure i would just take it down to like your hair's needs, do you feel like you, need more oil and moisture at your scalp and root level, if so curly, if not, maybe so the conditioners, I really love these. They are formulated with a lot of really really great oils and all four have the same seven ingredients again. It'S just our conditioning base and these seven ingredients are all about making the oil and the water work together. Essentially, all they really do is they give that nice thick lotiony texture, but they also make it. So you don't have to shake your product up to use it, because if you didn't, the oil and water would separate and the formula would be separated and you'd have to shake it up, but because they're in there they blend everything together. The coolest thing about them is that they all add slip and anti-static properties to the formula, so you can brush through your hair more easily and it's not going to get staticky now before we jump into each of the individual oils that we're going to see here. Let'S just do a brief overview of penetrating oils and what they do for our hair. Generally, every penetrating oil is going to do four things number one improve the lipid barrier in your hair. There is water in your hair and then there is a lipid barrier outside of that to keep the water safe, improves two, it adds strength and elasticity three moisture and shine and four uv protection. Those are our core four and whenever i mention an oil that is penetrating, it does the core for that's going to save us a lot of time here for the straight hair conditioner, we have avocado oil, it does the core 4, with the addition of blocking dht, Which causes hair loss and thinning, so basically, it can help prevent hair loss too. Coconut oil is another core four, but it also helps to protect against protein loss. Coconut fruit, which is hydrating. We'Ve got all the moisture in the world from these oils. Let'S make sure we get the water too and then rosemary leaf, whose my primary benefit is to block dht. So they just kind of casually added a hair growth helper in there, which i'm not mad about and that's the straight hair formula. It is mostly meant for people whose hair is already happy. It'S not trying to repair damage. It'S just trying to keep things going, keep things good, protect what you've got moving on to the wavy conditioner. The star here is argan oil. We'Ve heard of her she's, pretty famous, she does the core four. In addition, it makes your hair a little bit easier to brush through a little bit more manageable and it helps protect against protein loss. Both of those things are great for people that have hair. That'S a little bit more damaged. Wavy hair would typically have a little bit more of a lifted cuticle, so it would be easier to lose protein and it would be easier to get tangles. So we add in argan oil to help to protect against those things. We also have some of our favorites that we just talked about. We'Ve got coconut oil, coconut fruit and rosemary leaf, so more moisture and protein protection, hydration and dht blocking. Then we make our biggest moisture jump to the curly formula, and this one primarily has shea butter in it. This one does the core 4, but it is also significantly antioxidant and antioxidant does a whole lot of things in here. Essentially, free radicals can run around and damage all parts of your hair from the outside structure to the inside structure and antioxidants. Stop it from doing that, so in curly hair. That is extremely important, because the curl structure relies on the basis of the hair structure. We want that as healthy as possible. You also have sunflower oil, which is the core 4 and hydrogenated olive oil, which adds uv protection and really nice slip, and then the coily shampoo is the exact same with the addition of castor oil. So you have more humectants more lipids in the formula doing a lot of good things just up in the antsy one more time. This one is a core 4 that also stimulates blood flow to the scalp stabilizes ph and adds significant luster so between all of those. If your hair is mostly happy go with the straight formula, if your hair is wavy to slightly curly, mostly happy, but a little frizzy gon na go with the wavy formula and then if your hair is super thirsty like it just needs all the oil just it Up curly and then, if you know that you need that extra oil on your hair and i do feel like curly girls really know their hair, they typically know when it needs more moisture. If you feel like that's you, the coily one's gon na be really good and now on to the boosters now these. These are what got me because i was like listen if these are full of silicones and like kind of bs claims about what they can do for your hair, i'm out, but then i started doing a little bit of research on it and i was like oh Wait these are good they're science based and they help the hair from the inside out. Okay, that being said now that i've done this research, i would pick different add-ins than i did so. Hopefully this will help you to pick the correct add-ins, the first time around. Okay, first of all, judging by the amount of reviews, this is one of the most popular uh anti-frizz. We should talk about our expectations first, because a lot of us a lot of us when we have frizz, we go in with a serum or a shine spray or anything like that to like tame, which is great, it does the job. We love styling products. The thing is that is really more cosmetic: it's a lot like makeup for your hair than it is hair care. So, if you're expecting your shampoo and conditioner to give you the same effect as your super slippery serum you're gon na be disappointed. However, if you want it to actually enhance the health of your hair so that it becomes less brizzy, you would enjoy it. So, let's talk about it, so this one is based on beetroot extract. It has been shown to improve manageability, significantly moisturize the hair, promote elasticity and give heat protection and color protection. So essentially it is significantly moisturizing your hair. It is adding manageability and it is protecting it from future damage, and that is what frizzy hair needs. Frizzy hair is frizzy because it's dry, so we want to add in that enhanced moisture, but i do think you're going to see cumulative effects and i do think if you really love your cosmetic hair, stylers you're, going to still want to use them just like skincare And makeup you want to use good skincare, so your base is nice and ready, and then your makeup applies so much better and the overall effect is so much better, but no more beautiful, because your beauty is not reliant on makeup, then moving on to shine, which I think is very similar to anti-frizz, like the things that help you to anti-frizz are going to help you to shine. So, let's see what they did here, they used amaranthus leaf extract, i'm not certain that i'm saying it right. It'S very antioxidant! It helps to add shine, it adds manageability and it reduces stringiness. So i'm not saying that it's as moisturizing as the antique frizz, but what i am seeing is that one of the things that they really tout in this ingredient is that it enhances your hair's movement, which is going to really show off shine. If you think about really damaged hair, sometimes it kind of just sticks straight out and doesn't really move a lot with this one. It'S going to help it to kind of flow. A little bit more. Reducing stringiness is also going to give a better overall healthy. Look to the hair and the antioxidant is going to help with the hair health, so i think look at the benefits of the two boosters between shine and antsy frizz that i just laid out and think about which one you want most for your hair. You could definitely double up and use both your hair would just be the shiniest, but if you want to pick one think most about what you want from your hair and now we're on to lengthen, they say that this one is going to help promote growth for Stronger healthier, looking hair and they have hops extract for that one. This one is very indicated for hair growth. In one study it was 73 as effective as rogaine, so there you go, you can use it as often as you, shampoo and conditioner, and you don't have to use rogaine and it will help with hair growth. So we love that one moving right along this was my surprising one strengthen they say it's going to increase your hair's natural resilience and elasticity, stimulate healthy hair and help protect against future breakage. Now they use pea, sprout extract, which is significantly indicated for hair growth. I mean i found way more literature on that than i did on hops, so very well known for helping to decrease the amount of resting hairs and increase the amount of growing hairs. So it's also good for hair growth, but it's also extremely protein. Full adds elasticity and protects from future damage. I don't know if y'all just heard what i just heard, but i just heard that i could use the strengthen instead of the lengthen, get the hair growth benefits and benefit my actual hair strands that are already here. I mean that just seems like a win-win situation, i'm just saying and now moving on to the volumize booster, this one we again need to check expectations as much as i would love to be able to just use shampoo and conditioner and immediately have voluminous hair. I know you know this too. You have to use products, you have to use tools, you have to style your hair, that's just how it goes. We'Re not going to expect this to be hot rollers and volumizing mousse and hairspray we're going to look at what it says it can do to help us get to our volumized goal. So this one has amaretto seed extract and corn starch and together these are deeply repairing and protecting. Now, if you are going in with the mousse and the teasing comb and the hot rollers, you need that absolutely. But in addition to that, both the seed extract and the corn starch have been shown to swell individual hair fibers to actually make them bigger, so each little individual fiber is a little bit thicker. That means that all of your hair is a little bit thicker. So everything is going to look more full and be better for styling those big hairstyles, okay, soothe scalp. I actually picked this one out because i was like um. My scalp is super itchy right now, because it's winter and i feel like i make a video about that every winter because it drives me nuts every single time, and i was like sure i want my scalp suit. I did the research on this. It is so cool they use xylitol, which is significantly antimicrobial, including fighting molestasia, which causes dandruff cut and overall it can be used to help fight a wide variety of scalp ailments. That'S awesome! So not only is it soothing because it does help to hydrate and produce collagen, but it's also helping to treat any kind of infection or growth. We might have going on. No shame in the game. It happens to the best of us, possibly to me, given how itchy my scalp gets in the winter. I don't know, of course, it's always important to see your doctor about any significant issues, but if you are having a hard time with your scalp yeah, absolutely super love co-signed on this one. Okay, deep conditioning this one really surprised me, i was expecting oils or protein or something like that nope, so they went with apple extract, which is significantly antioxidant, deeply moisturizing and helps to protect against water loss. So again, with antioxidants, it's stopping any of the crazies that are running around destroying things in your hair, making your hair a happier more stable place, getting the moisture getting the hydration, but not in a way. That'S going to interfere with the deep conditioning mask that you love to. Do we love to see it? I don't expect this to weigh down your hair at all, but i do expect that it does significantly condition your hair, which is very cool. Okay. Moving on to thermal protection, i have recently discovered that you truly don't have to only use the sprays or the bombs on wet hair right before you heat style. You can also get it out of your shampoo and conditioner for this one. They use hydrolyzed sesame protein. It is really good at repairing and water retention, so basically helps to fix past problems keep the current hair happy, but it also creates a film around the outside that is especially activated by heat, and it helps to protect the hair from heat. It'S also water soluble, which means that it does still wash off. You don't have to be afraid of the whole film thing, but yeah it leaves behind a protective layer so that when you blow dry your hair style, your hair, you have a layer of protection. If i was to use this one, i would definitely still use my spray-in heat protectants, but i would expect that this would help catch me in the times that i forget to put it on, because that does happen and laura would say far too much. The curl definition booster again, let's talk about the difference between cosmetic styling versus creating a healthy base. This is not going to replace plopping and squishing chicken dish and using your creams and your gels in whatever routine you've created that really helps your hair you're still going to have to do all that. But hopefully this is going to help with the base of all of it. So what we have in here is flaxseed oil, chia seed, oil, caprylic acid, don't worry a good acid and xylitol and all together, these are significantly anti-humidity anti-frizz and they form a film that somehow helps to protect your curls general shape and structure. I don't completely understand how it works, but the scientists that wrote it were very sure, so i'm just gon na believe them. If nothing else. We know that flax, seed and chia seed are great for the hair. Caprylic acid really helps prevent moisture loss and helps to condition and xylitol great things as well, so you're not going to go wrong and finally color protection guys. This is my favorite one. You want to know why, because it's rice based two different ways: we've got rice seed protein, then you have phytic acid. Another good acid and just general rice extract rice is significantly indicated for protecting against uv damage. That study that i found in my last video that made me so excited is still applicable here. They proved that rice is effective in all of these categories. Um, let me read: it increases elasticity. Protein conservation protects, keratin, reduces lipid, loss, enhances, shine, protects color and enhances the surface of hair. So if you're keeping score at home, this is very, very good to help protect against uv damage. But it's also good across a number of other markers, that's going to help with the health of your hair. So this is a good multifunctional one to put in as your booster rice is really good for things like elasticity and shine. So you're gon na be getting that in addition to the uv benefits - and you can put this in with your wavy shampoo and get the benefits of all of this rice protein and the fermented rice water extract. I mean after my last video i am very pleased about that. Okay, that's the boosters, there's 10 of them, so that was a whole lot of information. I do hope this helps. When i picked out mine, i picked out the scalp soothe the lengthen and the strengthen again. I might prioritize differently now my favorites looking back are the color protection for obvious reasons, strengthen because you hit multiple birds with that stone toy birds, though never real birds. Right now, really really loving the whole scalp suit thing. It'S doing great things for me in the winter, but i think for the spring i would probably add in either the thermal protection or the deep condition both of those have caught my eye, and that is the whole overview of everything. Thank you for buckling. In with me, if you're still here, you're a real one, i think it's so cool to get to learn the behind the scenes of hair care and understand why and how these brands are trying to address our needs. It'S super cool, but it also helps me to pick out things that better suit my needs, so i hope you guys are feeling that as well. I do want to talk about what it was actually like to use them like going beyond the label. What was this actually like, and to do that? I'M going to need my sister anna, laura hello, we're matching today. Somehow you look a tiny bit less like the rock than me. Hmm, it's a lower neckline okay. So we both decided to use the wavy, shampoo and conditioner. I'Ve got to say i love the colors in this line. Yeah it was super cute. Very good packaging expect nothing else from target. I love that these are super squeezy like really easy to squeeze more brands. Need to get on that they do. I need to do a lot less of like working the product out of the box right right. I hate that war after it gets to like this empty. What do you think of the smell? Oh, my gosh. I think this is like top three favorite scents in a shampoo i've ever smelled for sure it's a peach. I thought it was jolly rancher. I was wrong. It stays on your hair really well too, and then for my boosters. I picked the lengthen, strengthen and scalp soothe. I did the deep conditioning and the strengthen, so it's super easy to squeeze them into the little bottle and shake them up. Oh yeah, i do have to say that, like i was concerned about mixing them up, this is fairly watery and really easy to shake up that one. I didn't have a hard time with either and they leave enough room in the bottle right to shake it around. The first time i squeezed this out into my hand, i did have to re-shake it up again and do it like. I saw a little bit of separation, see so it said to shake it for 15 seconds. I went for a full minute and i went as paint spinner as possible wow, okay yeah. I did. I just like shook it up for 15 seconds. Oh no, maybe do a minute. It sounds like that. Did a little bit better. It worked real well. So i feel like a lot of the things that we picked are cumulative you're gon na get after a long time. I'Ve used this about four or five times. The scalp soothe, however, is something you can experience immediately, and i did i had a very itchy scalp. It was getting embarrassing, really really very itchy person in the winter. I really am it's so bad. I did see the benefit of that pretty much right away and knowing that i'm using the lengthen and strengthen, and they both help with hair growth. Yeah i mean i feel like my hair is just like shooting out of my head right, but as far as the experience goes, it was really nice in the shower. I got a little footage for you guys in my uh, my little shower scene. It is so sudsy it is it lathered up so well moved through the hair super. Well, i felt better than better than sulfate shampoos. The shampoo felt almost moisturizing while being sudsy, but as soon as you wash it out, you had that very clean feeling, like i didn't, feel like it was going to be weighed down in any way, but it was so easy to move around. I was a little concerned at first i was like. Is this not going to feel very clarifying, but as soon as i washed it out, it felt really good yeah the conditioner? It'S like super lightweight and almost jelly yeah, but it does moisturize the hair really well. Even though this is day three and my hair is full of texturizing spray and dry shampoo, i still have shine yeah, your hair is very shiny and i do feel like it was immediately softer the first time i used it and each time i use it, i'm Like re-upping the softness and yeah, that is something that i have noticed. Yeah, that's really that's really big. Coming from like a gel conditioner, i'm typically more of like a fan of the lotion conditioners like the really thick ones. That'S what it feels like it's doing. The most probably just you know the perception of it being thicker, but this really did make the hair feel that moisturized immediately as soon as yeah. It was really it's that penetrating oil got ta, love it. It gets in the hair it does. I do the squish. Stick condition method, so i really feel the difference between how quickly and how fully it's getting in there i'd be really interested to see what the curly conditioner would do for you yeah. I would be interested to see that too, because i was definitely on the fence between straight and wavy and i'm i'm very glad that i went with wavy after finding out that there's not that much difference in the formulation, because i was i was really racking. My brain, but now i'm like okay, definitely wavy, maybe curly. So overall, i had a great experience. I do it again. You have two add-ins so overall for you, this was 26 and overall. For me it was 29.. I feel like that's, not bad. I mean i know that it's not three dollars from swap, but you guys also heard all the benefits and the fact that they're science-based plant-based and all the other things that we love. I think it's worth it. I understand if it's like, not the budget, that you have or want for your shampoo, but i do really like it and i do think it's worth the money yeah. I agree. I'M someone who, like i think, a little while ago on your channel, i just made that discovery that some people mix their shampoos and conditioners to get different results. So i'm very much. I'Ve always bought a set of things and i've always just committed to it and gone with it, and over the past year i've really been learning what it's like to mix and match, and i feel like, if i had this a year ago, it would have made That transition a lot easier because it really does break down in a really user-friendly way. What kinds of things you should get for your hair goals, but overall, i mean really good choice. I think it is a really good quality for the price point. That'S the biggest thing like i understand that it's not the same as the four dollar, but you're also not getting the same kind of ingredients not even close to the same ingredients as you do and like those lower end, drugstore products. So, as far as like bang for your buck, i really feel like they really delivered so overall big thumbs up from us, yeah pair nerd approved and normal person approved, and also just experience approved. It'S not just good on the label. It'S good in the shower definitely recommend all good. Thank you so much for trying this out and giving your feedback oh you're welcome. I am happy to be a guinea pig any day. I will always offer up my hair for science. Well, as long as i know, it's like kind of safe, i was like hold on. That was a very bold statement, no binding contracts, all right, bye, susie. Thank you, bye, all right. Well, that has been my scientific analysis and review of function of beauty for target again very pleased really really love. It hope you guys enjoyed this video. Let me know what questions you have below would love to answer them. Do i need to review another line? What do you guys need? Let me know again comments below if you enjoyed this video hit, the like button to help support my channel and my exhaustive research and if you're new here, you can hit the subscribe button to join the braidaholic family here on kaylee melissa, where we learn everything about Hair from care to styling, and, of course all of you guys, can hit that bell icon to be notified every time i post a new video, but that is it for today, so whether you're, old or new or a casual lurker. Thank you for spending time with me and i'll see you in my next video mwah bye. You guys might be noticing that my bangs look nice and symmetrical today. If i do say so myself, it's because i've got this little extension in you, don't know what i'm talking about. Uh watch my botched curtain, bangs video, let's just say this site - has a chunk taken out of it. That i didn't do awesome.

Monica Rachele: I’d love a video of you comparing the Target version to the custom version sold online. The ingredients for the different “hair goals” are mostly completely different so I am super confused if one is better than the other and which hair goals to chose for the online version. Pleaseeee Kayley? Lol

JoMarieHartup: Function of beauty has always struck me as influencer marketed expensive pseudoscience.

Kiki May: Would you ever try shampoo bars and how they compare to normal bottle shampoo?

Samantha Marshall: I'm a PhD scientist and I am SO HERE FOR ALL OF THESE SCIENCE VIDEOS.

Madison Hudson: PSA: Xylitol (in the soothe booster) is extremely toxic to dogs and cats. Just a tiny amount can kill a pet. Be sure to keep way out of reach if you have a dog that likes to chew.

Ana Lorena: What I need, ma'am, is an entire series of Kayley Melissa explaining the science behind haircare. Legit think I learned more in this video than I did in all of high school

Tijana: I don’t think I’d spend the money on this. It’s cool that they let you customize your mix, but I think a lot of people get caught up in the novelty of that and don’t stop to wonder if these products work any better than what’s already on the market. At the end of the day, is the quality actually better than the high-quality salon brands you can get for less?

dwallens: I literally just saw this at Target this morning. I didn't know they were selling in store now. I like the idea of the boosters but I'm going to learn more before buying. Thank you for your research and explanations!

Ella Mae: The reason why I have never used function of beauty is because to get it shipped to Canada it would cost $80 (that was the price last time I checked could have changed) which I can’t justify spending close to $100 for shampoo and conditioner. Target also isn’t in Canada so I probably still won’t use it.

Amy Shaw: "I don't need a new shampoo, but I love Kayley's videos so I'll watch anyways."..... And that's the story of how I bought a new shampoo/conditioner set.

abby yates: I see this everywhere, and I’m so glad my trusted hairstylist is reviewing it

Annabel Yang: The timing of this couldn’t have been better! I was just considering buying these this weekend, so thank you!!!

Isabelle Barrett: Best of luck to anyone actually using these, my hair is still recovering from the absolute havoc these products wreaked on it. I have straight, virgin hair that's super healthy, shiny, and balanced normally so I figured it wouldn't do any harm to try out personalised hair care. This stuff left my hair greasy a few hours after washing, matted and tangled constantly, dull and overall limp and lifeless. I've used literal poundland products that made my hair look and feel better lmao. At first I thought my hair was just adjusting to the new product but after 3 months it was still awful so now I'm stuck with over half a bottle of shampoo I literally can't use and a conditioner that doesn't really do anything more than a standard drugstore product.

Solaiya: Have you tried the "online" function of beauty shampoo and conditioner? I'd be so interested what you think about that since the price point is noticeably higher.

Amy Sugarkisses: I ordered Function of Beauty about 2 years ago when all my friends were raving about it with their cute little bottles with their names on them. It wreckedddd my hair. So so so dry, even though I said I needed something for dryness. I will never try them again.

Ellie Rayne: I'm just curious how it compares to their pre mixed customised version you get online, since it seems like the ingredients are quite different from the Target release...I'd rather have less plastic waste, but, it seems like the online version isn't as worth it as far as the quality somehow...???

Julie DeVita: Many claim that the online function of beauty causes their hair to fall out after long term use. Is there any science behind this? Would this also apply to the Target line?

Heather J: So thankful for this. I’m severely allergic (epi pen) to sesame. I would have added the thermal protectant if you hadn’t mentioned this ingredient. Also will never use anything with xylitol since a very small amount can be lethal to dogs. Not worth the risk in my house. This shampoo could have been pretty bad for my home. Thanks again.

Hannah: The last few videos have been so incredibly informative and so well researched, loving these!

Van essa: I've had fob a year ago, and I really liked the first one, it genuinely changed my hair for the better at first. And even more so my scalp. But halfway through the bottle it stopped working as I wanted it to. It did nothing more than what Drugstore shampoo and conditioner did for me. I then changed my goals for the next shipment and that didn't help much either. The shampoo and conditioner work. They don't irritate my sensitive scalp, my hair is healthy etc. But it's not good enough to be worth the money, if I can get the same result for a fraction of the price, especially with international shipping and taxes which I had to deal with.

Livia Marques: Thank you for this video! I had been skeptical of them since it seems like they're sponsoring everyone on youtube lately, but the only unsponsored reviews I've seen seem to be aiming for drama and were kind of all over the place (as in, big chemical sounding names are bad for your hair!) so it's super nice to hear from someone who *actually* knows what they're talking about and who's trustworthy.

Alexandra A. Saenz: Dang, this sounds amazing but I don't think I'd try them out :( I've been trying to reduce my plastic waste as much as I can so having multiple packets for a single end product seems like too much for me. Oh well ‍♂️

shesaysdisco: I’ve been sort of considering looking into this brand for a little while, so this video is fantastic! The nearest Target is 45 miles away from me, but a really good Thai restaurant is in the same city, so I could totally justify a little trip...

CE4ME: Regarding itchy scalp and dandruff, about 4 years ago I started a low carb lifestyle (50g/day). Before, my scalp was almost scaly and itched so badly if I didn’t wash everyday. Now, no dandruff or itchiness—completely gone, and I can wash twice a week. If I splurge and have cake or something high carb, the dandruff reappears until I get those carbs back down. Great video, I think I’m going to try these products!

Courtney Walsh: I’ve definitely liked the subscription that I’ve had! And the big thing for me was I do enjoy the aesthetic aspect because small things like that make me happy! The big thing I LOVE though is the scent choice- and that I can choose a scentless option. I get migraines a lot from smells so that has been super helpful.

Science_is_Never_Settled: But... would your hair fall out if you put in four boosters? Would the police cone get you? Would your house catch on fire? Can shampoo count?

Zosime22: The Function of Beauty website actually uses different ingredients for a lot of these

TheMalfunctioningMeatsuit: Something that confuses me between the online version and the target version is the amount of boosters. If it's the same company shouldn't you be able to do up to 5 whether you get it at target or order it from the official website? Yet the line at Target is up to 3 boosters and the website is 5. Why?

Lauren Daniels: Love this! I would really love other videos where you deep dive into the ingredients. Olaplex in particular I've been wanting to understand better.

Jesse Wilson: Let me tell you, I've finally found a shampoo and conditioner that works for my hair, I'm really glad that you explained all the boosters, I was able to find the perfect formula and my hair actually looks nice and healthy!

Amber Ros: Omg this is SO helpful! I've used function of beauty subscription in the past and loved their products but couldn't handle the price tag, so when I found out they were in Target now I was stoked but skeptical. How could the product be comparable when it costs so much less? Its good to hear that you also love it, and to learn more about the add-ins because it turns out I was choosing the complete wrong ones for what I wanted from my hair! Thank you for this, I feel so much more confident buying this product now that you've helped answer so many questions I had about it.

Briana Ramirez: This was very helpful! I was actually standing in front of the display at target today trying to decide & became too overwhelmed & left! I’m excited to go back with a lot more info under my belt to make a decision now!

Alexis Tomlin: Glad I found this video. I tried the online version and I loved it! My hair was prone to damage but the products helped strengthen and grow my hair (I have 3c/4a hair btw). I was excited but hesitant when they launched their line in target. Now I definitely want to get it

Jordan Ilagan: I've actually been using Function of Beauty for two years now and I really like it! It's a little pricey, especially because I live in Canada and shipping here is expensive, but I was using Moroccan Oil before so the price is pretty comparable. I also found the bottles last a really long time so it feel worth it to me. If you're willing to spend a little more on hair products, I would recommend this brand.

20% Off: I've been using function of beauty for about a year. My first try I didn't really know what I needed for my hair and it didn't combine well with my hair chemistry. The second round I added moved the formula options around and really been loving it. It's expensive but knowing what I'm putting in it cuts the fat of messing up my hair with cheapo shampoos.

Aka Shika: I decided since I was shipping my in shower hair care from the US anyway I'd give actual function of beauty a try and this has helped me choose the "help" I need for my next batch. I had chosen lengthen and strengthen but since they're basically the same that means I can add in colour protection. Thank you Kayley for doing the research for me :)

ThePunkTheory: I got a function of beauty set from their website a couple of months ago and so far I really love it. Wasn't aware they're partnering with Target now, that's really cool.

Ashley Roselle: When I say I’ve been waiting for this, I mean I have been waiting since the launch I bought it anyway (Wavy base with scalp smooth and deep condition) and I’m in love! I’ve been alternating between this and my Kristen Ess ones, and my hair has never been happier!

Nura K: I have heard some people who used the function of beauty and it caused them hair loss, then once they switched to a drug store shampoo their hair loss decreased. What do you think might be the reason for that? And Love you soo much!! Been following you since 2016! :)) I am so happy that you reviewed this!

Carly Piotrowski: I really appreciate the fact that you explained this in a way that uneducated people explain. I know nothing about the literal ins and outs of hair so this was super easy to understand !!

심~각하네: This is so, so helpful!!!!! Thank you for bringing the full hair-nerd out and teaching us, like you said, about FoB but also ingredients in general for better-informed shopping

kaylin paige: This video is literally EXACTLY what I needed right now!!! My shampoo and conditioner are almost gone, and I've been trying to find the perfect (more healthy option lol) product for my hair. It seemed like a lot of work was put into this video, and it was super amazing and informative so THANK YOU!! :)

The Antimuffin: LOVING the science you've been sharing with us lately. Hair products are such a mystery to me and now I feel less mystified. More please!

CharlotteModel: I tried function of beauty a few years ago when it was first popular with a lot of influencers. I thought it felt nice and good quality, but I didn’t notice any improvement in my hair compared to medium priced products like bedhead or redkin so I didn’t repurchase since those are a much better value.

Clara Nimmo: Ordered mine online. I’ve been using this product for about a year and love it! A little pricey compared to some drug store shampoos but for someone who doesn’t wash their hair everyday this product has lasted me so long and with the immediate benefits I saw, TOTALLY WORTH IT !

Emily Menard: I spent like an hour on Target’s website a few weeks ago and after adding all of it to my car I decided against it because I had my doubts but I am convinced now!! Thank you sooo much for this amazingly in depth review

Andreea Ilie: Hey!! I am new to your channel, but I am so glad you talked about this subject. I really wanted to try this line for my hair. Many girls claimed that this brand saved their hair, including healing beached hair and helped it grow. Many claimed that is better than professional ones, like kerastase

Golden C.: I ordered it from the company at the cost of $60+ for shampoo, conditioner and hair oil and it honestly was not any different from regular hair products. Now I'm using Hairitage from Walmart and it is just as good for only $7.95.

lalaleilei1: This video helped SO MUCH! I kept eyeballing function of beauty cuz let’s be real, I’m at Target frequently. This really helped me figure out what I should get! Example, I have straight hair but it is also heavily color treated/bleach so I ended up not getting the straight hair shampoo/conditioner because of the benefits of the wavy hair option. SO HELPFUL! Thanks, Kayley

Emily van der Heijden: This is SO informative and helpful, thank you! I began using natural shampoos about 4 years ago, function of beauty being one of them, and I just found that my hair was so frizzy, dry, dull, and would not hold a curl to save its life! I switched back to generic drugstore shampoos and my hair looks way better. But I think I am going to try this shampoo using all the info from the video and see if it changes anything!

Megan C.: Love this video! This definitely helped me choose between wavy and straight and I loved that you took the time to break down the boosters! THANK YOU!

Ashley Salahub: I've been using Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner for almost a year now and my hair feels and looks healthier than ever. I am starting to notice thinning hair at the front centre of my hair line, so I might end up changing up the formula a bit to try and stop that thinning and make it grow again.

Karina Castillo: This was amazing Kayley!!! Ive been eyeballing function of beauty for quite some time now and just never pulled the trigger because i felt like it was expensive. But now that Target has it i can at least try. And after watching your video i literally ran to Target just to get it. Im super excited to try and your video was extremely helpful and awesome. Thank you!

Jennifer Medlock: Thanks for your in-depth review on the bases and add ins. I've been on the fence about customized care for my daughter's hair. My hair is straight and simple, not hard for me to find shampoo/conditioner, almost anything works for me. My daughter has very curly hair and I have been struggling to find something that works for her. $29 for a pair is definitely doable to try for her. I've been spending $9-10 a pop for other shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins for her every time we try something new, and half the time we hate it and throw it out before it's used up. Very much looking forward to trying this. Heading to Target!

Daisy Mae: I just had an amazing thought. There is no reason you couldn't add the boosters to a super cheap shampoo/conditioner! Imagine adding these to a $2 bottle of suave.

Frankie Horvath: I've been loving these science based, well researched videos lately!

Monica Rachele: I hope Function of Beauty starts giving you that coin soon!!! I had to run out and buy this right away. We have very similar hair so based on your breakdown, I got the Wavy formulas with Color Protection, Strengthen, Deep Condition, and Soothe Scalp. Idea: 1 Soothe Scalp packet in the shampoo, and 1 Deep Condition packet in the conditioner (see what I did there?). If you are happy doing them, you should keep with these types of science-based myth and marketing OR efficacious type videos! Between this one and the rice one, I am LOVING!!! And it seems totally like something that could be “your thing” to further distinguish your channel. Love ya girl!

Esther Knorpp: Thank you for this video and the research you put into it! I loved learning about all the things that were put into making these products. You’re so good at explaining everything, please make more videos like this!

xqueenfrostine: I love the idea of this line and will definitely be trying it, but I’m kinda bummed that scent customization didn’t make it to the Target line!

Two After I Do: How you taught me all that without me glazing over or getting bored is talent! Thanks so much for making this, I have been debating function of beauty for a while and this is what I needed!

danagirl0612: I’ve been using FOB for a while now and it’s amazing. My hair is fine and thin, oily scalp and dry ends. Best hair care I’ve ever used. My hair looks and feels super healthy, no static, oils stay away. I love it.

Hannah Burns: This was so thorough! Thank you so much! I've seen these and always think about them in the back of my head, so this was so helpful! And as a science teacher, I LOVE the science behind the ingredients!

Cam11: Ooh I’m super excited!! I see function of beauty sponsoring people all the time, always wondered how it could work ;))

Mariam H.: I really appreciate and love how much information there is in this video. I feel like I learned a lot and will definitely rewatch it later. I’m not even in the US so I can’t get this, but love learning about hair care in general. Thank you, Kayley

A. Hulst: I just realized I've been watching your videos on and off for almost 10 years. Your haircare videos have always been my favourites! You give such great advice that's super useful for everyday people, and you're so positive and nice to watch!

Jennnanana: I love these science based videos! Your research is appreciated <3

Rebekah Hoch: Watched this again this week when I got to target to get them! Straight hair with strengthen, soothe scalp, and shine. Super excited to try!!

Caitlyn Alexandra: Thank you soooo much for this video! I’ve been wanting to try function of beauty forever but couldn’t rationalize buying it online but now I have an order at target ready for drive up right now thanks to this review

Amanda Reilly: I am totally in love with these new science-based videos!! I've been a subscriber since the green sheet days and have always loved your hairstyle tutorials but this might be my new fave type of content! ☺

Kitty: Oh wow. This is so interesting. I always assumed this was an expensive gimmick that influencers got paid a bunch to promote. How wrong I was Thanks so much for all of this!

Dani Nee: I have to say, this is the most informative video I've ever seen. Well done Kayley, you can tell how much work and research you have put into this it's great!

mocha: Wow, I was literally just lamenting how people don't get as detailed and in-depth about hair-care products as skin-care products, and then I stumbled across this video! I love how digestible you made all this information! Love how much research and work you put into this

WriterOnTheEdge: Thanks for putting the ingredients here. I was looking at trying them, but I’m allergic to coconut and I couldn’t find their ingredients listed anywhere, so this saves me a ton of money. Thank you x

Evatinful: Love the detailed and very informative way you explain the ingredients and what’s about the product. So would you say it’s better then their original product - the shampoo and conditioner customized by them especially for yourself? And are there combination to be avoided? Because I was really wasn’t impressed by the customized version

Ali Brownfield: So informative!! I've been wanting to try out this brand for a while now but was so overwhelmed with all the choices! This was the video I NEEDED and I think it's my favorite video that I've ever watched from you!! Thank you so much for explaining and breaking down all of this for me! I can't wait to try this brand out now with my newly learned knowledge

Lilly Roman: I want to add that they last a whole smack amount of time on what i can actually consume in a month with a $4 shampoo & conditioner. Mine is the 16oz. I bought mine in december (online) and i wash my hair once a week only using like 3 or 6 pumps of each. Its february and i still have more than half full on both bottles. Like its unbelivable. I have curly hair and i used to use a butt load of conditioner, where with this one, i dont have to use as much and it still leaves my hair soft and hydrated. Highly highly recomend.

Jamie Kirkland: Love how informative and helpful this was! I have a question though, are the ingredients just as good if not better when you order from their website? I know you can choose 5 additives online but ingredient wise? I’ve been using FOB for a year now and love it!

Maddie Knodle: Omgosh this is great!! I was literally going to order some but could not decide between the straight or wavy base. Your breakdowns were a lifesaver! Thank you so much for all the time and research put into this!!

April Lozano: Hi!!! Amazing video! I just purchased at Target and I was so excited when putting in my first booster which was strengthen that I didn't notice that each dropper was labeled one shampoo and one conditioner. I think I put the shampoo dropper in the conditioner bottle and vice versa. ‍♀️Do you know if that will make a difference? Thanks

Kris McBride: I have used this by ordering it from the website. I loved what it has done for my curly hair but I recently cancelled my account. It was getting to expensive. Getting the Target line actually costs less. I'll have to check it out.

Kaerden: I just got my FoB set from the site a month ago and I love it, but it's cool to see you so giddy about the science-backed ingredients.

Agatha Pietrzak: Thank you! I'm between the wavy-curly, the more I've been nourishing my hair and treating it like it actually has texture instead of straight the more towards that curly side I'm getting I've gone from a 2a/b to a 2c/3a combination (which can be a little annoying I wish my hair would choose) in the last year or so. I had no idea which one to buy I went with the wavy because I was scared of weighing what texture that I do have down. I have been using it for about 2 weeks so approx. three washes. I may switch to the curly next time because I remember my stylist telling me that I was having some dry scalp issues (she's on maternity leave so I can't go in and have her take a look to see if using the wavy is helping that.) But hearing your opinion makes me think I should just try and I can always go back.

Kiia L: I love these videos!! All the facts are interesting but also makes your reviews much more trustworthy! Thank you for the hard work!

MM: I hope this comes to the uk. This sounds so interesting and you could always just buy the boosters and add them to your own shampoo etc

Kvic: Kayley. I think you literally saved my hair and scalp. You posting this convinced me to give FoB another try and after one use we are THRIVING over here!!

Anna-May Moon: Omg this is so helpful! I was literally discussing with bae how/if function of beauty actually works and it's like you've just pulled off the cover like TA DA! SCIENCE! Also if I was going to pick up the shampoo/conditioner in store (I can't; UK viewer), I can imagine being very overwhelmed so this is so helpful! My Question: does the shampoo base work well by itself? Cos it sounds like even without the boosters it's a great product!

valarya: I had NO idea Function of Beauty was in Target, now!! I've been using their shampoo/conditioner for over a year via the online subscription service and LOVE THEM. I feel like it could be a bit easier to customize online via buying different things to chemistry lab @ your house, but both ways are awesome. Thanks so much for going in-depth on what all the different boosters do and how they're helpful. LOVE

Denise Mattingly: “The scientists that wrote it were very sure” Also, I have been looking at getting function of beauty for so long but always stopped myself due to the price....thank you for making this video and teaching us all the science behind it so we are able to find just the right combination that suits us best! I think I’m finally gonna pull the trigger after watching this video and order some!

Karen Gato: I normally like but never subscribe to "beauty" channels, but you rock!!! Good research, good presentation, eloquence, using proper terms, even testing. If you had used a control group and quantitative metrics, you would have a full scientific paper there! :P Love it.

Jupiter Liam: This was so helpful!! I was skeptical of the "Soothe Scalp" one because they always have tea tree oil in them, which irritates the hell out of my scalp, but it's great to know that it actually has helpful ingredients, and not just a bunch of essential oils!

Sophie: I have been using Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner since May 2019 & I absolutely love it. However when choosing my hair goals I didn't really know the difference between them and what would be best for my hair type. This video and your explanations has helped me so much to understand all the benefits of each goal! Thank you Kayley I'm about to go and have a revamp of my formula!

Karen Lee: Thanks for this video. I ordered from the company for the first time without knowing any information about their ingredients. Their customer service is terrible. They only email you a general statement without addressing your issue then they send you another email saying the issue has been resolved. Multiple emails have never solved my issues or answered my questions. Its ridiculous. Good to know that Target carries this product and your video has been 100% helpful!!!!!!!

Chris H: I’m super excited! A bit disappointed though, because I think(?) with the original Function of Beauty you could choose your scent or to have no scent at all, and I was hoping the scents for these would be in booster form. I’m really sensitive to fragrance. Like, the scents themselves, but also my skin reacts to a lot of fragrances. So I really wish the scents in this line were more customizable! I still might try it but I might just have to stick to my Kristen Ess fragrance free forever lol.

hibernating mummabear: I ordered some for my 18 yr old daughter who has long natural auburn hair, that has a mild frizz and can appear dull. I got the wavy/antifrizz/strength/shine combo in both shampoo and conditioner. She's been using it for a month now and she's blown away by how her hair has responded to it.

Stephanie Boross: I used the wavy line with strengthen, lengthen, and deep condition. And I added the same to the deep conditioner. For the leave in I added the deep condition and thermal. I am in love.

Raquel Alba: I loved your input on this brand! Sadly it didn’t work for me at all. It weighed my hair down a lot and made it super greasy. I tried a bunch of different formulas and none of them work for me ‍♀️

Sea Life nails: Im definitely going to try this next time i need shampoo/conditioner! (I just bought some) Also i noticed its cheaper getting them at Target then from their actual website. Thank you for all the research!

RedVexeD: Super useful! I have (recovering) 2c-3a hair and cradle rash (bad spots of psoriasis around the hair lines) - knowing these ingredients are able to do those things really helps explain why the new stuff I got is working. Definitely want some of those boosters now though - the curl enhance, strengthen and anti-frizz are all ones I really want! :D

Elliemay2039: Thanks so much for doing this. I see these everywhere all the time but never knew if it’d be worth it or not especially with the price. So good to have your advice on function of beauty before finally taking the pledge on it. Fingers crossed I get even half as good a set of results as y’all did.

Allicyn Texeira: I was looking at getting this and I’m so happy that you’ve done a review AND A FULL BLOWN SCIENCE BREAKDOWN! Definitely gonna make my trip to target a lot easier now . PLEEEEEAAAAASSSSEEEE do more of these science hair breakdown type videos (absolutely fucking LOOOOOOOVED the rice water one) they’re so interesting and I love how passionate you are about it and it deeply satisfies my nerd self. Love it! Love you! Can’t wait for more!
