How To Mix Indigo For Optimal Hair Color (Brown And Black Tones)

To dye your hair naturally with indigo, you'll need henna as well. Indigo is used to darken your henna powder so that it's not so red, or orangey toned. You'll use this for reddish-brown, browns, and up to black tones.

Proportions are important when making your recipe to get the right color tone for yourself. Generally they are:

Reddish-Brown: 30-40% indigo, and 60-70% henna powder

Brown: 50/50 of each

Dark Brown: 60-70% indigo, and 30-40% henna powder

Black: Full strength of each as a 2 step process for best results.

Please view our videos that focus on each different henna powder that we carry.

Organic Indigo powder: this is our organic henna powder that we carry at most of our Indian arms. It comes packaged oil packaged and you just use you cut the top off plastic pouch, which you'll find it's in a ziploc bag and packaging. That'S very tightly see once an airtight airtight, it's nicely packed for you, know, freshness and I'm using a stainless steel bowl to show you how to mix indigo powder. This is a little small anyone and I usually use my favorite spatula to mix it with you use a stainless steel spoon as well. I don't always recommend plastic because it's poorest and the henna absorbed indigo any of the herbs that you're mixing. You can absorb it and then it'll like leave that smell and leave that stain. I like these things to kind of wash away and not be there anymore, and I don't use glass bowls, that's a bit more heavier and it's also breakable. So I don't use the stainless steel cheap at the dollar, store or Walmart open and pour a little bit in probably about 20 grams parcel in the corporate henna suck. So that's Hannah soup, calm of the herbs, are about three to five grams in weight. It'S more like about five grams, usually like a like, maybe a teaspoon and our teaspoon and a half or full of in the small baggie. And that way you can do like a small hair strand test or a patch on your hand or your arm on the skin, so that you can see. If there's any allergies, that's why you would do a patch test and then you want it or if you want to do a hair strand, you can see the color results. So this is the Indigo powder. It'S a bit. You know more green, it's very, very green. Compared to other powders and compared to henna, it also has its own distinct, know, kind of like frozen peas and either you kind of like it. Oh you you don't like it for me, it's not my favorite personally, the the smell of it. So usually, if I'm mixing henna with this or when I are mute, when I do my head an application, if I was to use this, I would probably add essential oils to the henna part so that it could smell really nice. I don't recommend you add any essential oils or anything else. Then what I'm gon na be showing you today to indigo, because indigo is rather fussy, so sometimes it won't take. Or you know, if you don't follow these steps when it comes to indigo, it might not work and so to avoid disappointments. Try to follow this! This guideline, this video for the instructions on how to use indigo alright. So if let's say you have a hard time, having indigo stick to your hair, you can add a little bit of salt. Salt is fine, have a bottle of sea salt here, Trader Joe's. So that's that's the salt! You can use regular salt. Any salt that you have is is relatively good and you add a little bit of that too. You know to this amount. Maybe for this amount, maybe I might add, half a teaspoon 400 grams. You might use about. You know a tablespoon at least that that seems to help a lot people to get to stick better. What you're using indigo powder for is to actually dye your hair brown to black tones or even reddish-brown C, like it depends on the proportions of the indigo that you're using to make a darker color with the henna and for sure, with indigo for hair. You have to use henna, the henna will either have to be done beforehand as a two-step process, and then you apply the indigo afterwards and they don't give you black tones. If you're mixing the two together, then you use mix your henna first. Let that have died. Release you make sense, then you mix your indigo towards the end, because the indigo usually has a faster die, or at least I'm ranging from 15 or 30 minutes. And then you will mix the two paste once they're, both ready with diverse mix them together and then you know, then you apply it on your hair, like after you ready with the indigo and it's hard I release, don't let it sit any longer. Just you know mix it together and use it also. I wanted to make note that why why you have to use in henna before you use indigo and why can't be made left them left to be used alone. Indigo will not cling to your hair strand without henna. It really needs henna as its based and when henna is the base. The Indigo will cling to the hair strand. Okay. So let's get to mixing this. If you've added salt, then you'll mix it all together. If not, you don't have to add salt, it just depends if your hair doesn't allow that go to cling, and that's why you would add the salt. You know it's only if you really feel it's not clinging as well as you'd like it to so. I recommend you use hot water, I don't really recommend use any other liquids. The Indigo, like I have mentioned, is fussy. So hot water is your best bet water. Anything with indigo is it's runny err, then henna powder and other herbs so add a little bit of water at a time and actually just mix it up a little thick because it just tends to be runny and you'll definitely notice a difference in smell compared to Henna see this is enough. Look at that. It'S already very don't even money, you know if it was henna or another herb or cassia. You know who probably would've been adding a lot more water. So at this point I'm gon na let it sit. I also want to show you how you can see the diver base. It gives you an idea of you know your being able to tell if it's quality or not. If you ever get a a box of indigo from anywhere else or the Indian shops, you want to see if the color is good. So you add on a piece of paper towel and it's ripped up a little piece and I will stick it right into the edge and we'll watch that climb up into yeah watch it climb up the paper towel and that way you'll see the diamond ace. Alright. So we'll be back in about 10-15 minutes to see see that die climb up into that paper. Towel. Okay, see you in a bit! Alright, we're back! Look at that indigo! Can you guys really see you just how might a leaky and how just change the top layer in it it's shiny and it's nearly like blackish blue-black and a bit of you know green. You know every crop varies from crop to crop, and this is what our organic indigo the results, will look like without proper dye release. This is exactly what it's gon na be staining, see the color on the paper towel. I hope this gives you a really really good idea on what what to expect from our indigo and if you're you, like, I mentioned, if you're using any type of indigo that you find in this this one of the shops either online me I'll, tell Taylor's you: Can use this test for for any of the Indigo that you get just to be sure if it's good quality and then it's getting dye released, and you can do this with a small amount. I hope this really helps right now. I can't think of any other tips to give you just that, when you're, washing and out be gentle because, like I mentioned indigo, it needs a little bit more help to cling to the hair strand and for some people it's not long-lasting, but the average person can Do their hair every four to six weeks to color it, and if your hair is growing faster than that, then three to four weeks is okay as well, and if you want to do root touch-ups, you can do that as well and well. You know enjoy it. You know, and we're really happy that you've chosen to find out about indigo and and henna powder us right. You could color your hair naturally and avoid chemicals. This is definitely the non-toxic route, so we really hope that that you enjoy it. Thank you again. Take care.

HennaSooq: @maltesesistah Sorry that it was a bit low. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on that. It does make a difference as henna and indigo have different timings for dye release. So they should be mixed seperately or the indigo won't work as well as it should. You would mix them together as pastes once they have both achieved dye release. Instructions (written) also come with products purchased from us. Coffee or warm water are both fine. Coffee can tone down the red as well.

Loth Lorien: Hi and thank you for a very informative video. I have a question. I hear and read so much about the 1 and 2 step process of using indigo with the help of henna. However, I don't wish to have any red shades in my hair. I desire the blue-black shade. What would be the best way to use indigo then?

Gee Light: Thank you for this because I tried applying indigo dye yesterday, & didn't realize I should've applied henna to get the indigo to show more on my hair. I found my hair to be quite dry, & I have black hair. I wonder for women like myself with naturally curly hair, can we rinse out with a conditioner, or will that prevent the indigo dye from permeating the hair since my goal was to get indigo highlights? I found I had to put hair moisturizer & apricot oil to retain moisture.

S J Jackson: @HennaSooq You're very welcome. My hair is shoulder length and very thin (breakage from to much heat). I've been straightening my hair for the past 2 1/2 years and decided back in March to stay away from flat irons. I'm hoping the henna will help regain my hair's health.

S J Jackson: @HennaSooq You're very welcome. My hair is shoulder length and thin (breakage from flat irons, in which I've given up). I hope using henna on a monthly basis will help strengthen my hair and regain it's health. Thanks!

maltesesistah: Audio was a little difficult to hear. I should have watched the video first. I already made my mix. I didn't do separately. I mixed 2 tblsps of henna and 3 tblsps of indigo together and then added hot coffee. Will mixing the two together make a difference? Will using coffee vs. plain hot water make a difference? Thanks in advance.

HennaSooq: @Ellejen50 Thank you for coming by! What is your hair length and thickness so I can recommend the right quantity. Also yes you would do your henna first and indigo second so that you can get black tones. Full strength of each. It's called a 2 step process.

Sarojini Chaudhury: It would have been a neat description, had you listed the ingredients and their proportions , at the very beginning. Then, how to soak, how to mix , etc. etc. Because , it is easy to understand when clearly written.

HennaSooq: @barose1 Yes each treatment for hair dyeing/color is at least 3-4 hours OR with heat you can cut it in half. If you are going for black tones, you'll do a 2 step process and leave on each part, 1st henna, and then second indigo for 3-4 hours each or with heat, again, you can cut it in half.

INdegenous: @HennaSooq - my goals is to color my hair with henna. I would like brown color with NO red tones whatsoever. It was suggested I use Rajasthani henna and Indigo. I don't know what proportions to use (especially indigo) as the it makes a difference in attaining brown to black color. Please advise. Thank you!!!

HennaSooq: Welcome. Yes absolutely, I'd recommend a one step process and then a last step of just indigo for the blue black tones

HennaSooq: Hi Lumia. Solution to what the fading? If it fades and you have a good base of henna then you'll see reddish tones not blue/purple. Have you tried henna with indigo as yet?

LSimon321: Thank you for this video.  I recently purchased the Moroccan henna.  I thoroughly appreciate that your bags are resealable.  I use henna/indigo to cover my gray and therefore don't want to use the the entire bag.

Trey Murdic: perfect thanks for explaining in detail !

Forlocsake: @HennaSooq Thank you for answering so fast. Another question please, is it necessary to shampoo d hair before henna application or can i just do a ACV rinse to avoid product build up in my hair? Is it better to rinse henna and then indigo using conditioner and after that deep conditioning hair? or it will take better if u just rinse with water. Thank you in advance.

HennaSooq: @SoundOut260 I'm not sure, but is it indigo from Henna Sooq (us)? What is your procedure? Meaning how exactly did you mix it?

Forlocsake: once u finish doing henna, so you have to dry your hair after rinsing it out in order to apply indigo or you can apply it on wet hair?

sweetbee06: Hi, I want to use henna for stronger, thicker and softer hair, however I want to keep my hair color, I don't want any reddish tone. What should I do?

Mohammad Vaid: I don't know if you can help me: I am looking for small quantities of spirulina to mix with indigo to dye my hair blue or purple permanently, from what I read, indigo on its own isn't going to have much impact But I don't know whether all spirulina will dye blue or it needs processing. The idea is to dye the indigo and then the dyed, intensified indigo would colour my hair.

HennaSooq: @indegenous78 I'd recommend the new indigo we have in for darker results or for more resistant hair. Use at least 60% indigo and 40% henna, if not a bit more indigo for darker results.

HennaSooq: @virgivane Welcome :) You can just make sure your hair is clean and doesn't have a greasy build up. Whichever you like to use for that beforehand would be okay. Clean hair is good. A lot of people do like using a conditioner afterwards. Do that especially if you know your hair will like it. Some also just rinse. It really depends on your hair and how it holds it. I can shampoo and condition without issues but some need a cool rinse to help it stick really well.

HennaSooq: @StealMyHeartLovee The Jamila with indigo will be perfect to use. What tone would she like for her hair? Is there something else I could go over that would help?

Alexia: How long should I keep the henna and indigo on my hair to dye it black? I normally leave henna and cassia on my hair for about 4 hours. Do I need to leave it on my hair for that long? Thanks!

Blue_horse: Thanks for posting, like that u are certified organic, would i test indigo on arm for patch test, a.so my mom used box dye, how long would need to stop box color before using henna and indigo? She has black straight hsir..

Khadija Dawn Carryl: To Gina, as it won't let me reply directly to you under your comment. Don't know why YouTube does that...but you can co-wash it out and yes henna must be used with indigo to make it work and to avoid the green hues of indigo use without henna. Yes you always have to moisturize after henna and herbal hair treatments

HennaSooq: You need to use henna every new treatment for indigo to stick well and not color your hair green.

Forrealforever: im definetly gonna try. thankyou so much (:

HennaSooq: @virgivane No you don't have to dry your hair. You can if you'd like to but on damp hair is better as I find it goes on easier on damp hair.

HennaSooq: @SoundOut260 it doesn't let us post links but it's in the info of this video. We do have really amazing indigo and you should get the one that says indigo for hair. Postage starts at $11.95 to the UK

Forrealforever: can i use cassia as a base to make my indigo last better ? if i use henna as a base my hair tends to be red in the sun.

HennaSooq: @sweetbee06 You should use cassia obovata instead. We do carry that herb and others as listed in our videos.

Forrealforever: thx for the quick response. i want my hair to be as black and dark as possible, with a blue tint if it will.

HennaSooq: @SoundOut260 it might be old. If it doesn't work, then it might not be that good. That's what it sounds like. Is it 100% pure indigo? What do the ingredients say? Usually local shops don't carry really good indigo, and its rare to find it there too.

Irfan Raza: i need dark brown shade not jet black as my hair is dark browb can u tell how much indigo I should add to henna to get dark brown shade not black plz suggest

S J Jackson: @HennaSooq - I purchased the Lush Brown Hair Kit from your booth at the Natural Hair Show in Atlanta. I'm wanting add a black tone to my hair. Would I apply the henna and indigo separately, as well as use the entire packet (100 grams) of each one? It was very nice to meet you and I love your henna art. Thanks!!!

Alexia: @HennaSooq Thank you so much!

HennaSooq: @Ellejen50 Absolutely! Let us know how your henna journey goes :)

HennaSooq: @Ellejen50 Not a problem :) It happens

IAm Nameless: Could you use indigo by itself to get a blue color? I have naturally dark brown/black hair, and would like to have a hint of indigo blue in it. Any information about fyeing hair with just indigo to acheive a blue color would be very helpful.

Anwar Khan: Thank you for sharing this information. What is Indigo called in Urdu and Hindi.

lumia2011: i was going to try this...?can u tell me if you found any solution certainly dont want blue/purple shade when it fades

Hira Naseem: From where can I get indogo powder??? In karachi plzzzzzzz somebody help me

HennaSooq: Summayyah sorry about that. I'll update the description box as they don't allow url in comments. I should have realized this in all of our older videos to update that. Thanks for letting us know !! :)

Arslan Ch: I am from Lahore Pakistan .Is indigo available in Pakistan.

ravelfish: But I have dark hair, and I want that blue-black look... Do I still use henna or just Indigo, and is it even possible?

Sayyeda Shahbazi: hi, how can i order indigo powder online ? please help me!

HennaSooq: No cassia won't help better then henna, as you need henna to make a firm base to help indigo cling to and henna is a permanent dye whereas cassia is a semi permanent and doesn't give you much of a color base either. So henna and indigo together are best. Use more indigo to get less red tones then. What color are you trying to achieve?

HennaSooq: @virgivane Test a few hair strands out to be sure. Once you see how it reacts that is the best way to see how you'll have to do your hair regimen since I'm not there to see your actual hair and results. I hope this helps

Irfan Raza: Iam using only henna to dye my hair I did not try any chemical dyes up tillnow but now I want to try indigo I need to do patch test plz suggest

M B: Will it work on hair which has been hennaed a month before?

HennaSooq: I just wanted to add hat indigo paste does not freeze well. So when you are finished with it, or have any leftovers, you'll have to throw it away.

Mariam Kasmani: I'm from uae I want to order indigo powder online pls help
