Hi, my name is van thomas, and this is my sidekick tiffany and we're here to talk about a question that i was asked recently. A woman came to me and said i got a perm and ever since i got a perm, i'm losing my hair. I'Ve been in the industry 35 years and i don't think i've ever seen. Anyone who is losing their hair after a perm. What they're experiencing most likely is hair breakage and when you get a perm and it's not done properly - that breakage can occur right at the scalp, so you'll see a strip that is bald. It looks like maybe it fell out, but it actually broke off. There'S several ways that this can happen, and i just want to talk to you a little bit about how it can happen. So you can prevent it the next time that you get a perm now when they put the perm roller in your hair or the perm rod in your hair. They should be using moderate tension on the hair, not too much tension, because that the hair becomes very uh susceptible to damage once that perm chemical is put on the hair. The paper goes beyond the ends of the hair, so we're rolling paper. First, just moderate tension. You don't have to pull it really tight and crank it down as tight as you can. That'S what you don't want moderate tension once it gets down to the base. Many people think that putting this band on as tight as you can is a good way to secure this rod. So they put it all the way to the back and now what you've got is the band flat against this hair right at the scalp area, and it's very very tight when the when the perm itself is processing, the hair becomes very fragile and that band is So tight that it can snap the hair off right where the band is or right at the scalp if there's too much tension, so the ways to prevent that is, make sure it's moderate tension keep the band up on the top. You don't have, to put it all the way to the back, that's going to prevent it from leaning on the hair too hard, and the other thing is every time you put a band around the hair, put something between that band and the hair itself. Like a pick to keep that band off the hair, so it's no direct contact with the hair, so i just want to show that one more time, because these are these - are things to look for that can really really damage the hair. You don't want to put too much hair around a perm rod. You want to just take the diameter of the rod parting and the width of the rod paper should be pulled down to the end without bunching up the ends. Very, very moderate tension secure the rod along the top or upper back where the hair is and put a pick in to protect it. So this is pan thomas and we hope that explains a little bit of how breakage can occur and to not get it confused. With hair loss,

Bang Bang: Good a bad straight perm about 8 months ago. My hair was falling everyday after I got it. I was so worried I was balding but about 1 month ago I got a 0 buzz cut for my hair, and there was absolutely no signs of balding and now my hair is grown and completely recovered! So my point is if you recently got a bad perm and your hair is falling, even if its a lot and you think you’re balding, you’re not. I literally had bald spots when I first got the perm but now after about 7 months there is absolutely no bald spots or any damage to my scalp or hair. You will all be completely fine!!!

Aka Sukma: Hey, just got a perm about 2 months ago. Everytime I go to the shower and wash my hair, hair falls off. Even if I run my hand through my hair, hair falls off. Is this normal after getting a perm? Will this happen forever/permanently or is it just temporary? Will the hair grow back? Will I still experience hair loss after a few months/years? Thanks

cerys m: i got a perm around 4 months ago and strands of my hair has been falling out especially in the shower, i’ve tried this shampoo and conditioner that’s supposed to help dry hair but no matter what it falls out. any suggestions or advice on what i should do?

nightmuffin937: I really regret getting perms from 2010-2013. Now the crown part of my hair is thinning and I just wish this year has a time machine for me to warn my early 20s self about the consequences of getting a perm.

Tyler N.: Okay, so now I have to tell my hairdresser and others how to do something that so many have already learned and will argue with me endlessly because they have more experience…

Bang Bang: I just got a straight perm a week ago and every time I try to style my hair I lose a lot of it. Like chunks of hair just fall in my hands. I’m assuming it’s not normal but I don’t know because I’m a 21 year old man with a full head of thick hair. Am I actually losing my hair/balding or is it just some hair breakage or something like that?

Van Sang: I’m not getting a perm anymore.

Amy Lao: Good education to brush up the subject

dndlnr: Can a perm cause permanent hair loss?

Tia: So what am I suppose to do now? my hair has been falling out for 2 months now and Im shook.

Senvate: bruh everytime i shampoo a good amount of my hair falls out getting me nervous af

Astro: who else got a perm and later when they pull on their hair chunks of it came out? and when you take a shower your hands is filled with hairs? my perm got so bad i had to shave my head to get all of the dry hair out
