There's long been a debate about what's better - oil-based or water-based hair products?

In this video, I'll compare both talking about the difference between oil-based and water-based; identifying the product; styling; the finish; re-styling; washing the products out; your skin; and what's best for you.

Hi guys, how are you I'm Robin welcome back to my channel now? One of the questions that you guys asked the most is the difference between products, especially when it comes to water-based products versus oil-based products. Also, I find out first hand that there's quite a debate around this online, so I thought I'd go through the difference between these products really sort of weigh them up together and help you guys decide what's really best for you. We all know that hair products are so subjective and all depends on your hair type, a hair, so you want and also the lifestyle you lead, I'm going to be talking a bit about the debate, the difference between them identifying what that hair product is styling. The finish restyling washing out a bit about your skin and also guys what best for you in case you guys didn't know, there's actually quite a debate over there with loads of guys being involved in different Facebook groups, all about traditional techniques, pomades and sort of traditional Products and I've seen my videos shared on there before, which is great reviews. Thank you for sharing, but guys I have kind of been ripped to shreds in terms of my techniques and what I do, and you know, people really berating. The fact that I use a hairdryer and a hair spray - that's great, that's totally cool, but actually my channels not about that. It'S about sort of getting scripts of yourself and really trying out different products that suit you and your lifestyle. So really guys, I would say, as my retort to them, welcome to 2016 the year of choice, who, quite simply, the main difference between oil based and water based products are that oil based products are hydrophobic, meaning that they're repelled water and they won't dissolve in water. Whereas water-based products will dissolve in water and that's really as simple as it gets guys, you do get more modern, hybrid products which kind of confused the whole thing up and they don't sit in either camp and they might have sort of always properties, but they will Wash out with water, identifying of a hair products, water-based or a base is actually pretty easy. Now there are some products that give always straight away, they might say something like water-based or water soluble or washes I easily. That, generally will mean it is water-based, but you still want to check the ingredients now, just like food and drink the stuff, that's at the top of that list for the ingredient is has, most of so, if it says aqua or water, it means it's water-based and Generally, you'll have formal chemicals in that in terms of formulation of the product. Now guys oil-based will generally say that it's got something like beeswax or petroleum, or soft paraffin at the very top, and they will generally have less things in the formulation. Now, when it comes to styling, this is where it is so up to the individual now watch bridge products tend to be a lot lighter, so you can get throughout your hair evenly a lot easier, whereas all based products tend to be a lot thick and consistency And really require to warm that product up before putting it through the hair and you can get little lumps and bumps, so you really do want to warm it up now. If you want to go for something like a traditional palm or a real greaser, then guys without a doubt, I would say: go for the oil-based product, especially if that's a style. You do absolutely. Every day now, water-based products will dry harden your hair, meaning that they'll give a good hold guys, but really they will lose their shine throughout the day, also, if you're using a slightly cheaper product and they might call flake in your hair, which is never good. Now all these products won't dry hard and they'll keep being malleable, so you can sort of really work fast out throughout the day and they'll also retain their shine. This is where it really comes down to lifestyle, and when I talk about restyling I mean you know how easy is it to change that style with the same product or kind of just add a little bit more volume, obviously, with the oil based product, as I've Said they don't dry hard, so you can wake up the next day or just late in the evening before going out, grab a comb work. That'S pumped back in get a little bit more volume and kind of put that power back in if it's been messed up, whereas with a Water Bridge product because it dries hard, you're, not gon na, be able to restyle that again it's going to set where it Is you can add a little bit of water to kind of reactivate that, but I think it's just going to mess up, so I would never really recommend that makes a wash out and start again watching your hair is generally another lifestyle choice. I would say: if you're going for that sort of pomp Luke, can you always use an oil-based product, then generally you're not going to be changing the product and you're just kind of neaten up that style everyday, but guys if you're, someone like me, a guy who Changes hairstyles so often, and you like to change up your products. Then an oil-based product is not going to be great for you, because every time you want to remove that you're gon na have to use a really good cleansing, shampoo and actually, in my experience of using all these products, I find that I've had to shampoo my Hair two, maybe even three times to get all that build-up, oh, but guys are using a water-based product. You can generally just hop in the shower, not use a whoo and Renzo all of that product. With these now, I just kind of wanted to touch on this point, and this is not a Tommy scaremongering. We'Re saying that all base products are bad for you, but in my experience when I have used oil based products and I've slept with them in my hair, I've woken up see into a few days and I've had a breakout in my forehead and I've had a Little sports and that's really just because I've slept with it across my skin. It was absolute, my own fault and I've got quite oily skin anyway, so having that oil against it will tend to block the pores and cause spot, but guys if you can keep her off your forehead, you can keep it off your skin. Then you should be absolutely fine, also talking about sleeping with it in your hair. If you sleep with it against a white pillows or black clothes, even you can see that oily sort of secretion on your pillows and oil generally doesn't wash out of things that easily. So keep that in mind if you are sleeping where you're so best linen so finally, the right product for you is up to you again, it's totally up to you and I'm keep on saying this to keep on banging on, but it's lifestyle choices. It'S about what suits you, the Styles, you do and the sort of lifestyle you lead and guys for the people that been ripping my video to I was going to say, but let's go to shreds a very sad now and keep going. That'S absolutely fine! You give me a few views which is good. Let'S keep everything in perspective. I'M happy, I'm healthy. That'S all that matters. If you're happy you're healthy, then you pick whatever hair product you want. You know we're not changing the world. With this. I know I've got a few YouTube channel dedicated to style, excellent grooming, but I'm about giving people options to make the most of you. I think that's what Matt is and but thank you so much for watching guys what we've enjoyed this one. xHibachi24x: "Welcome to 2016, the year of choice." I absolutely love this stance Robin. Instead of getting defensive and feeding into the haters/trolls, you're just spreading good vibes and information. Keep it up brother. I'm sure it's already obvious, but the fans you have far outnumber the haters who try to bring ya down. Keep it up brother! Hope to see more awesome videos like this. P.S. I really enjoy you giving us the preview of what you'll be talking about in the beginning. It really helps bring the video together instead of other videos where there's no sense of direction.

Dhruv Mehta: Absolutely love your attention to detail; From the information in the video, to your description in the description box. Thoroughly love it ! Keep it up

Jonny Lister: Keep up the great videos robin! You give us top advice and then I guess we can decide what to do with it and/or take tips and apply to our own styles

theldtiii: I found this review 2 years late, but it was super helpful and informative none the less. Thank you.

Max Button: I've got to say this channel has come such a long way ever since you have launched the Man for Himself brand. Its a much more slick and put together channel. Its one of my favourites on YouTube.

Nicholas McKee: Hey Robin. I guess I'm on the side of water-based, simply because of the ease-of-use. I was wondering, do you have an opinion on the AXE/Lynx hair products? They have just updated their line. I might give them a try because they're only $6 (€5.30). Btw those glasses look great on you (not trying to kiss your ass).

W.S.R.- The Wet Shaver Review: Robin, I tend to use the product that most fits the styles needs. As you said a traditional Pomp or greaseback is a hand down oil based hair day. The FaceBook groups tend to be purists and are rough on those that don't follow the mold they set. I prefer water based products as they wash out every night without shampoo; what's better than that ? I love American Crew products as well Schwartzkoff which btw certain water based Pomades are restylable and have a flex hold. Last thing is a trick for oil based users, if you use the traditional "Groom & Clean" hair product (just a dime size) and work it into your build up or, daily style; it will rinse out just like a water base. Keep looking sharp gents !

Francisco Orozco: I love all your videos Robin, dunno' why I feel that I can Identify myself w/ the way you use and appreciate hair products

Juan Andrade: Honestly waiting for this topic thanks so much Robin !

Charles Kaplan: Very informative videos. Can anything can be done with wearing a wool cap or hood attachment for the winter months. When I go indoors my hair is out of control -- brushing or combing doesn't seem to help. I do use a clay, but if there is a product that will keep the hair in place after removing the cap or hood, please let me know.

Robin James: I’ve wanted to film this one for a while. I find the whole debate pretty interesting! It’s all about personal choice, IMHO.

Mean Gene: I have hybrid pomade, advertise as water base pomade organic, .. But the effect doesn't feel like water base, it feels like 50% waterbase 50% oil base... I like to use moose everyday, i really love my hybrid water base pomade, it was made by the barbers specification for the pompadour hair style..

Erin Kaye Ozga: Great information Robin! Always learning from you

Julian X: Thank you a lot for the info Robin! I'm getting an oil based pomade. Thanks!

Albi Snow: The thing is, I've never had a big problem with washing out oil based products. I have used Lockharts heavy and heavies are supposed to be very difficult to be washed out. It would just take one shampoo and conditioning to get it out, maybe two if I use a lot so I don't really care if it's water or oil based.

multimanfail: I used to use gatsby's wax and i need to wash my hair about 2 to 3 times to get it out. Ive decided to increase my budget and get higher end products like HDF or by vilain. It costs me about 3 times more than usual but at least i have fun styling my hair now

Austin Meehan: Great video (again) and thanks for clearing up some question marks

Heir: Thanks for the info, ive been wanting to know about this for a while!

Siberius Wolf: What clay products are there that are water based first in the ingredients, meaning they wash out easily.. only 2 that you have reviewed fit the bill, it would be cool to see more of those.

David Harkess: Thanx for this vid Robin. great info again. I swear Hanz De Fuko Clamation is the best product to date for my hair, I use it on damp hair and I can re-style it throughout the day. keep up the great work that you do.

speakthetruth: I have really thick hair and shampooing dries my hair out so I only do that once a week, but I am using v05 reWork putty daily is using water okay or should I really be making sure I get it out in the shower? Love your videos :) Thank you and have a lovely day.

Casper White: Any recommendations for water based products for curly hair ?

Shamana Rofaeel: really liking the higher quality videos!

Kraig Highnam: You're awesome, Robin. Always enjoy your videos.

Matt Pritchard: I find on days when I don't wash my hair that I can get oil based products out by just clawing at my hair in the shower and I've got really thick hair so it's odd that I find them easy to get out

Infinity: I want a product that’ll make my hair look wet and like where my hair kind of moves around as I move Any suggestions?

Emmanuel Benítez: Hi! I have a very big question. Using oil pomade can lead to hair fall? I've heard that the oil can clog the pores, and i don't know if i should shower in the morning and at night (you know, because i'm not sure if i should sleep with it) i would appretiate a reply. Thank you very much!

FURY GAMING: Great video, great debate! i use water based products because i shampoo my hair only once or twice a week.

Ishmam A.: and robin! your videos get better and better. plus those frames fit you quite well ☺

Luxury Vienna: For anybody trying to wash out an oil based pomade: take a conditioner, same amount as pomade, massage it in your hair and wait for 10-15 minutes. Then get in the shower and wash your hair just one time with shampoo. Your hair will be completely pomade free after that. Great video by the way!

NelsonGamezYT: Robin it tears my heart to hear that people are hating on your videos. They are probably jealous of you/hair/your products. I love you Robin. KEEP DONG WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

DienarNash: This cute girl I had a crush on says my hair looks to damn greasy. She was like "did you put cooking oil on your hair?" That was like... kinda make me... Sigh... Been using water based for lower shine ever since.

shahzad khan: HELPED ALOT! THANK YOU!

RA: i tried only one oil based pomade. never again. oil based is off for me. i go for water based because i hate to wash my hair with shampoo every day
