I’m Robin James. My YouTube channel is a destination for men’s grooming; looking at hair, skincare and fragrance.

I make videos showing how to achieve different hairstyles and haircuts; exploring grooming products; and reviewing men's fragrances.

Hello hi: how are you i'm robin welcome back. Oh welcome to my youtube channel this little world right here is man for himself. If you like, hair product reviews, grooming, skincare, fragrance and videos like this very one, then come on press subscribe right now. Okay, this has become a tradition, and this is my sixth year doing this. I started in 2016. I did 2017 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, and really it's a it's a bit of like a look back at the the hair products that have really defined my year. Um this year was not quite the year that i maybe you two had hoped for uh. Everyone was like ringing in those bells and saying oh 20, 21's gon na be amazing the world's back to normal. If anything, it's been even worse. It'S just been a bit to be honest, um, but the hair products have still been there and i've been very much enjoying them and there is one hair product here which is returned. It was in my 2016 most used and then there are two products here that have been in two previous years and so clearly i'm just absolutely loving them and they will all be linked, and there is also a most used page. I'M not going to show you that yet, but i'm most used, which tags my skincare my fragrance and my hair care products. Okay, grab yourself, a coffee, a whiskey whatever. Maybe a mulled wine: let's get a bit festive okay, so the the first one i'm going to give you. This is in no sort of particular order. Last year my products were all sort of like loose. It was like a little about a powder. There was a two of these, but it was more because i had this longer hair the hair's still fairly long, but this year i've gone back a little bit to some of my favorites, and this is back in aveda thickening tonic. This was in the most used of 2016 and it's back. I love this product, it's great in terms of ingredients. It really does what it's supposed to it: thickens the hair without weighing it down, and it's just a really great pre-styling step. For me, a couple of pumps of this into damp hair. I then tend to mix it, but i'll tell you about that in a second and then i just use a hair dryer and a medium heat fast speed work it up and it really just coats the hair and plumps it giving an illusion of thicker hair. This is not permanent. This is cosmetic. So it's about doing what you can with your hair. I have very fine hair. I go on about this. Tell me how long you've been on this channel with me, because you'll have heard this for years, but this really does help. Do that also um aveda is just a, i think, a really solid brand good ingredient they're clean. What does clean mean um, but you just really do know what you're getting i'll link this and with this i tend to cocktail it with another product and that product is sachawan ocean mist. This is maybe like my fourth or my fifth of this. This is a sea salt spray, but a sea salt spray without giving you um that sort of tacky, sticky, weighed down sea salt texture that you get with so many different products. I really love this and i i the thing i find sometimes with thickening products. Is it smooths my hair out too much, but i do want that sort of texture, so a little pump of this a little pump of that and a little loom together with a hairdryer, and i get really sort of um big textured hair. I really do love this sasha. One is a brand from stockholm. They'Ve also got the ocean, mist, shampoo and conditioner. I love it. It is amazing, it is so so good and it gives the hair that sort of beachy volume and its volume, which you could then leave your hair without actually doing any styling products. I think it's amazing. I really do, and i should say all of these products that you are hearing about are in my man for himself holy grail, really products that i think are five-star amazing and, i would say, go and check out the holy grail if you're looking for any products. But they are on the man from self site, so moving on from these two, i'm gon na give you a new entry and it's a new entry that is in my hair today, and that is sheer revival: northern lights. This is a matte paste and a matte paste, which is almost finished. I absolutely love this. You can see in my hair now um. I just think with this: it it texturizes the hair, it pieces, the hair, it defines the hair, it makes it look big. It makes it look plump and it makes me feel good and that's what products should be about. You know we should be finding products that give us a boost of confidence, this one. For me, it says it's matte and i would say it's more of that natural shine, so you kind of go anything from matte to natural, to high shine and on my site you can actually you can filter by that. So if you're looking for a clay, you can press clay and then you could go matte or you could go natural or you could go shine and that's we're going to work it out and but matt pastes tend to be more that matte to natural. But i really like this in terms of you scoop it out, there's a slight tackiness to it. You work it into the hands and you can really build up and it does. It gives a great hold and a really good finish. So i've really enjoyed this also shira levi. Sheer revival, i think, are a really really great brand and and if ever i was to have a shop, i would definitely try and stock this one robin. What'S going on more to come in 2022, and i just absolutely love this - i think it's really really great. Okay, so another one another one that i um really love. Uh is sticking with this sort of texture. This has been around before i've banged on about this. It'S no surprise um. You may be bored of hearing about this moroccan oil. Texture clay really really like this, whereas this one is slightly more firms. The sheer revival. This is looser. This is kind of like a hybrid of a paste, a clay and a cream, so it gives it a slight sort of gritty texture um, but it gives it a really good hold and i just think it's a really great product. I really really love it again. I'Ve had about maybe like three of these um. It was actually alex koster that got me onto this um. I had been at an event and he had been talking about her products and i think it was when he was developing his um and he'd said that he loved this. So i thought well, it's good enough for alex it's gon na be good enough for me. So i tried it and i absolutely love it so, thanks for that alex great heads up um, and i should also say that this list may be slightly different for next year. My most used may feature a new product and it may feature a new product. Very close to home there you go just keep on dropping those um. I have one more product in my most used and it's a product that has never featured um. It'S featured on my instagram. It is on my site, manfromself.com. It'S also been entered into the man for himself holy grail and it's in the holy grail, because it's changed my mind about pomade and it is lockheart's gun. Grease water-based blew my mind seriously. I absolutely love this, and the guys from lockhart's, nicole and steve, had sent me a whole bag of products a while back, and i i have a lot of products and i sometimes get a bit stressed out with having too much. I hate things going to waste. I quite often put stuff in bags and i send it off to shelters so that people can use this stuff and - and i had this sitting - and i thought - oh, you know i'll give it a go. I love this. I think it's so so great. It'S for me how a pomade should be, and you have a slight stickiness to it. It pieces its high shine, uh, it smooths the hair slightly. It just is really responsive and it's water-based, so it means you're not going to have that heavy heavy grease. That needs almost like a detergent to take it out. It is so good and you can see how much i've used there. Um good hold good volume, great shine, and it doesn't. I mean it smells all right and but i i love it, and lockhart is another one that if i ever was to have a shop i would love to have lockharts in there hi lockhearts, i might be in touch um. I will be in touch, but i absolutely love this. I think it's such a great product and i think it really does do what it's supposed to um, but there you go. That was a bit of a whistle stop tour of the five most used products of 2021. As i say a bit of a of a year, let's be honest: 2022. Should it be better? I don't think we're gon na go back to normal, because in this world and this climate, what is normal, but the most important thing is stay safe, stay, healthy and keep your loved ones close. There. You go it's a bit of a party political broadcast from me, but thank you very much for your support this year and i'm gon na have another one on skincare and i've got one fragrance of my most used. So please do come back on those and if you're still new to this, just don't press subscribe, then hey come on. Who have you been seriously? Please do press subscribe right now that button? Isn'T there there's also more videos suggestions, then they're stay with me and watch them and head to the products pages right here, uh check it out holy grail check out the most used right there and some more up there, but until my next new video? Thank you very much bye-bye. You

Robin James: My most used across hair, skincare and fragrance are all here: https://manforhimself.com/product-tag/most-used-2021/

Vbiscuit A: I first tried Morrocanoil clay from your recommendation (fine hair bro here, Hello!), but it just wasn't for me. Way too sticky, tuggy, and strongly scented; could smell it in my hair for 2 days after washing. Since then, I tried SR American Gardens and I absolutely love it!! Great hold, malleability, texture, just dry enough and makes my hair feel amazing. Btw, if you enjoyed Northern Lights, I HIGHLY recommend the Crafted Sea Salt Paste. It's very much like NL but with easier washability and has an added feature in that it can be styled into damp hair without any cons.

Gay Horror Geek in CT: The MoroccanOil paste has been a godsend for me. It’s quickly become my go to for my third day hair routine. Do you have any suggestions for products for curly hair?

Patrick Quinlan: Thank you for your great reviews Robin! I absolutely love Shear Revival hair products, Grey Ghost is my favourite but I do switch it up with the Northern Lights after seeing your previous review. American Gardens was my no1 since it was released but I found it a bit tricky to wash out. I am thinking of trying out a pre styler that I can use before applying products, something to smooth my very thick but fine hair!

Orpheus 010: Whether you have thin or thick hair, Aveda Thickening tonic is a must. It is no doubt my favorite pre styler. I think it's even good on its own if you don't want to use a styling product.

Brian Kop: For me the products that I used throughout 2021 and also liked using are: 1.) Jack Henry Clay pomade: it is a very unique product that I am able to use for three days straight and my hair is still matte after blowdrying with the product in it. 2.) Firsthand supply Clay pomade: it gives me great texture and hold all day and that is what a great water based should be 3.) Arcadian Matte Paste: reminds of Cavalier Clay by Blumaan but it’s a matte paste with a great hold and I enjoyed using this product 4.) Lockhart’s goon Grease Unorthodox water based pomade: the product holds up my hair despite it dropping throughout the day but I can restyle with a comb. 5.) Daimon Barber texture Clay: although the hold isn’t that strong for my hair but I enjoyed using it on my short hair and also the fact that it washes out very easily.

David Maddaford: Hi Robin, Thank you, thank you and thank you again for your incredibly good advice on hair care! I have bought some Aveda Thickening Tonic and it is so amazing. I have been searching for something like this for years! Take care.

John F: Since you recommended Moroccan oil paste, i tried it and i don't use anything else now. Really good product

Patteera S.: Thank you for your review. After watching battle brand and this video, I decided to grab both Shear Revival Matte Paste and O’dous. Very satisfy with its performance.

Grobee: I must say Robin I've been looking for good products for my hair which is super-straight, thin, dense and very unruly and nothing really worked for the style I wanted to achieve which is a structured but more lose everyday style. That is up until you've reviewed MoroccanOil Texture Clay and Kevin Murphy Rough Rider. Both are amazing products, the best that I've been able to try throughout the years for my hair type! Thanks! Oh btw I've been using Fudge Xpander shampoo which was suggested by you as well which is good, too! I've might start looking into replacing it with some more expensive and potentially better stuff. Mostly looking for volume, texture. Would the SachaJuan shampoo mentioned in this video be a good upgrade? Any other suggestions are welcome as well :D I must say using a good shampoo was a HUGE change as well. The cheap ones always dried out my hair so badly that after blowdrying it it was always extremely dry and fluffy. It was really bad tbh :D

Anna Harutyunyan: Hey Robin, could you do a review/test on the Goldwell Matte Rebel Clay? I recently discovered this product and I quite like it. The main reason for that is the super smooth application. It also has a decent hold and gives loads of texture. I‘m very curious what you think about it. Your opinion is important to me.

Beamz Salt: Finally bought Moroccanoil Texture Clay after seeing you mentioning it lots...it's been well worth the purchase.

Sleepy Head: My hair started thinn9ng in my mid 20's so I want to try the tonic. $34 is steep but I'll consider it.

Presley Jorell Ibe: Been here for a while now, and i'm glad to see how good products stand the test of time!

Jeff NO: Hi Robin, thanks a lot for sharing your experience. When you put products on your hair daily, how long should you wait to wash them ? I have thin hair, a bit like yours, and at the third day they're just losing their nice volume and starting to get shiny. Do you have any tips ? Thanks again :)

h: Can't wait to shop through all of the "homebrews" in your new store!

augustya: Hi Robin ! I feel like asking you one more question here between the two Label.M Matt Paste and Morocconoil textured Clay which one would you suggest for Fine Hair Styling. I know you have used Label.M also a lot in the past and you Swear by it. So which one would you recommend ?

Phil Tomlinson: Ah you videos have turned. my hair from a “dragged through a hedge backwards”‘look to a refined almost human look! Happy Christmas!

Benny22: Robin! You should launch your very own hair styling product

serenei007: Robin... When I scroll through for example, Amazon, I see lots of clays and pastes etc in the mid range price, ssy from €10 to €15 or a little more. Names like Dapper Dan, Pacinos, Crafted, seven potions, Man cave etc. I wonder would you do an episode like your previous ones where you took some budget ones and zipped through them. While they aren't dear, were I to go off buying all of them, it would rack up pretty quickly.

Ryan McKinley: Bought Northern Lights paste on your recommendation about a year and a half ago and still love it

Dutch Van Der Linde: Hi Robin, my hair is extremely straight, thick, and heavy. I’ve tried different haircuts and none seem to work. I understand that some people such as myself that have been dealt this type of hair just kind of have to deal with it but I was hoping you might have a few tips? Some sort of last resort for hair that just falls in my face after an hour or two, even with product?

Brian: Been using the Nioxin Thickening Spray but would like to compare it to the Aveda but in Canada it's like double the price wondering if it's worth a try Thanks

Mohammed Shifan: Your hair , skin and outfit always look on point man⚡

Mark Dinan: Love all the exciting 2022 hints Robin

augustya: Hi Robin ! So do you first spray the Aveda Thickening Tonic and after that you Spray SachaJuan Ocean Mist Sea Salt Spray ? or is it Vice-a-Versa ?

Hayden Robinson: Robin I beg of you to do a review on the fudge professional matte head mouldable, I think it is amazing and every guy with fine hair should have it

Remigiusz Piwowarski: If you like "natural products, you could check out Mr Bear Family, especially their clay pomade and grooming spray, hand made in Sweden. To me they're really good

49cc 125cc: Hello, what wax or pommade you recommend with NATURAL products? No alchol etc.. thanku for the review!

Akash Biswas: I've been using the textured clay for a few months, the hair doesn't seem to stay in place after a couple of hours.

Kevin Dudginski: Robin dropping more bombs than the new Spider-Man movie Exciting stuff!
