Its Not Halloween Yet! | Designing Cute Witch Characters With A Limited Color Palette

Here we go so for today's video. I thought we could go through a little uh, ow., [, Laughs, ], Art, Snacks Plus box., Don't mind this things got a little bit more aggressive than I was expecting them to get. That'S my bad, but if you don't mind, I thought we could jump inside this box with our eyeballs, not our bodies, because they wouldn't fit see what else is in there and then maybe make some art with it. 🎵. Alright, so inside we've got our bubble, wrap bag and the hanhnemuhle nostalgic, sketchbook, 80 sheets 90lbs, and it's a landscape. Sketchbook. I've never used the landscape. Sketchbook in my memory doesn't mean I've never used. One. Got the menu with the art, snacks plus exclusive items, as well as the art, snacks, items., Three Pitt artist, pens and a highlighter. I think.. Let me in I've never identified with the big bad wolf. So much. Let me in What are those things: Stencils huh interesting. Uh, one brush pen in the color leaf green.. Can you tell it's a brush And then two super fine nibs? This is the color cobalt green., Okay. So it's like kind of like a bullet nib or a pen nib, I don't know. Super fun, nib and then black and finally a highlighter., I'm sure you're all familiar with those, and that's everything in that box.. That'S kind of an interesting set.. Also we have this guy. Is he like a? Is it the pencil sharpener? Oh, it's like a 3B pencil sharpener., There's a side for your colored pencils and inside for your jumbo graphite. It says.. How do you empty it? You grab these little guys.. Oh alright. We figured it out.. I was not outsmarted by a sharpener, not this time at least.. They also have candy smarties, I love them and finally, we have some art supplies inside this. Let'S see what that is. oooOooo. Do. I have this color, It's a Copic sketch marker, which is my favorite Copic marker type.. I don't know what you'd call that.. Oh, I don't actually have this marker. How cool. You don't get Copic markers in these art boxes very often, so that's like really exciting., Oh and there's another one and it's purple.. I bet I have this violet. I don't Wow new markers, that's so exciting! I don't own either of these. This makes me think of Halloween though. Yeah. We got two Copic Sketch markers.. If you didn't know, Copic sketch markers are like the high tier Copic marker. They're, like the professional most professional. Maybe I should say marker out there. The Copic sketch always have one brush nib and a chisel on the other side. So they're very handy you get into the little tiny spaces and also fill larger spaces very easily so and get a lot of control with that brush. Nib love, it., Okay. What else was? Oh, oh, this is so cute. I love fruit. Look at it! It'S got little oranges or nectarines or something., So also a factis extra soft dust, free eraser.. You honestly can't have too many erasers you lose them. You use them and they're, never there when you need them. Erasers., Oh and there's also a pencil. This is the generals. Drafting pencil or is it called drought? Is it pronounced droughting your drafting, pronounced drafting.? Okay? Oh that's right! They have jokes on these., I'm like all over the place today.. What did the artist ask Shakespeare when he was sketching his portrait, Uh 2B or not? 2B. I'Ve made that joke before, not that it's not funny, although maybe that means it's not funny if I've made the joke. Alright. So here's what we're working with it's a very odd assortment. I will give it That's the word I'll use to describe it like landscape sketchbook.. I mean it's kind of like a rainbow. I guess that's like a June theme, but like it's not because it doesn't have like red. Oh there's red.. Is that what they were thinking? I don't know you can't use the red, though so rainbows are out of the question.. Hmm, let's go ahead and start. Oh, this is such a nice sketchbook.. Do I want a swatch in it? Maybe I'll skip a page and then we can swatch these guys.. I also want to try the highlighter, like on top of the pen, see if we can go on top. Wait, we're swatching.! Oh my gosh, I'm getting ahead of myself.. This is cobalt, green, that's fun! It'S very blue size 0.3. Was the other pen a different size. Wait a minute, I'm confused. Yeah. These are both s, but this only says s up there, whereas this one says zero three with an s, and this only has an s. What does that mean? It'S a very nice deep black, whereas the cobalt's a little bit lighter.. I think they're water - well, it says waterproof.. Oh it's made of India ink. I didn't realize that and then this one's a brush. Okay. So that's the Pitt artist pens.. I'Ve never been like in love with Pitt artist pens, but I feel like they're used a lot by like other people.. I don't know they haven't won me over yet, but that looks like they'd be a lot of fun for like sketching with pen.. I'M just saying I don't know what else I'm supposed to do with this.. I'M gon na just do a line straight through here.. Oh, it's smudged to the black ew.. Okay! This is a very hard graphite, not my preference, but it might work for sketching because I think that'll make it really easy to erase and try this guy out and see. If that's the truth, it's not that uh a different really., Okay, okay, we're taking in information.! Oh and then we have these, so we can kind of see if they go through the page.. So far, nothing is bled ugly ugly. I mean I'm used to it, but it's still ugly.. What'S that called Cadmium orange., I wonder if this box it was kind of random what color you got.! Oh, that is deep. That is so halloweeny come on. It'S it's June., I'm not about to draw any pumpkins and witches I'll. Tell you that much.. What am I supposed to do with this Is their prompt or something Did I do that? We challenge you to fill an entire page of your new sketchbook, whether it's with words, doodles or patterns cover the entire surface from edge to edge. That'S the challenge, but what do I actually want to draw? I'M just going to draw a person because it's a nice warm up, get the wrist moving and I just love drawing people we'll start there.. Oh, this is a very stiff pen. I don't know why. I keep drawing dots for eyes. It'S just really been working for me. Some hair. Some legs might be nice. I don't know what I'm doing, but it's fine. Wow. I have no idea what to this is such a weird assortment.? Oh, you know what I didn't test. This we're good looks like you can put Copic markers on top of these just fine. I really do not want to use both of these colors in the same illustration.. If I do, one is going to be so sparing because I just the Halloween vibe., Although I could draw a witch do I want to draw a witch, though Hmm, let's try like a little fashionable. Witch. I feel like v-neck, might be a good idea.. Maybe, since it's the summer we'll give her a tank top, maybe one of those like sweater tops., We could just keep it with the summer vibe and go with like some shorts. Ooh ripped up. You got ta have like magic sparkles, although I give everyone those. So I don't know if that makes her special or anything.. I want to do like a witch hat, but I gave her those little piggy tails and I like those too so maybe next time. We should do tights.. I don't know if I have to get different markers for this, but tights, and then what are those vans? Little shoes that like have these little lines on them, but like the high top version, black with white laces., Hey try some color, but I like it. I might actually simplify the style a little and see what these colors look like flat and if I don't like that, then I'll probably go to more this style and go with more like I don't know, shading and so like bring in some more of my own Colors, that's what I'm thinking.. So, let's do more chibi. Maybe we could even give it the witch hat now. We have room. Sorry, my dog's just making himself comfortable. Just make it more legs.. Does that make sense? Alright, I don't know if I even like this.. Well, we could definitely throw colors on this. I'M not worried about ruining it.. Maybe that's not a bad thing., I'm also for the greater good going to find a nice reference of these shoes. I'M thinking about.. Oh, they do look a little different than I expected.. They have a big white base, sole part. I guess. Lots of stitching, but this little thing goes like this.. Okay, I might have made them a little high, but they're high tops. So that's okay. Hmm.. These legs are so short, there's no room for the socks, but I'll just throw a little simple one in there.. These are somewhere around here.. Maybe if I slim that down it won't look so childish. Close that in and let's do some simple hands or arms. I should say, but this is mostly to test the colors out., So don't need to fall in love with it, not yet anyway.. What, if I put like the hat on a string on her back, can you wear a witch hat like that? That'D be like the big opening for your head in there and then I get to have the space buns. Okay hate the face, but that's about the only thing. So I am going to use my kneaded eraser and erase some of this. So there we should still be able to see pretty well, then I'm going to grab this pen that came in the box and give ourselves a little line. Art., That's a lot of teeth, so that was a mistake. Okay, something like that. That'S like the line art just erase all the pencil., That's the best. That'S gon na do.. Okay, let's try some colors. I was thinking basically purple for the entire outfit, but it's kind of like our black. That'S what I picture it kind of like Kiki's Delivery Service. How I think her dress is technically black, but we all know it's purple same thing for this and then, since these are black, do that too? So then I wanted the tights to be a color. Thinking, some kind of green around the eyes, maybe the lips. Well, that still looks halloweeny and all this is the tiny little little green with purple.. I can't fight it.. We could do black hair, I just don't wan na. I don't want it to look too Halloweeny.. I also haven't used any of the blue.. We could do tights, maybe for that. Ooh fishnet. I don't know how else I would do this. I guess you'd see a little underneath there too. I'm going to grab. I was saying a white gel pen, but I don't see one. See if this guy wants to work., sometimes this helps. Little seams and everything., Maybe white seams on the shorts classic.. I don't know if it looks like a witch.. You know what also might be interesting if I make this more like a Henley or raglan tee, so she has short sleeves.. Then I might want to add line art down there, though, so it doesn't look like her skin's just painted. Should I include orange somewhere. What happens if you layer orange on the purple, I might actually just layer that to make it a warm brown., It's very dark, but I'm gon na go over the purple again.. I don't like orange very much.. Now it actually looks like black.. I might have to use the orange for blush though. So now, since now it's showing.. Oh that looks like a clown.. Oh no, Okay! So I know I'm like complaining a lot and there's a lot of things. I don't like about it, but there are some things that I do like about it.. I think it has a lot of character. There don't make me say: anymore., It's all very, like dark, so I should probably keep that in mind with whatever the design ends up being and since we have green, I might give her green socks.. I know this is gon na look halloweeny, but at this point just use everything.. Oh, I could have done highlighter socks.. Do I want to do highlighter skin Nah.? I could do highlighter over the tights maybe., That's kind of cool.. The body has won me over. It'S just the face. I don't like.. I could draw the face. Let'S see if this helps. And the buns. Better less green uh, that's for sure. Uh just wanted to do that part first.! I don't have to draw lines perfectly there.. I even did a better job. Doing the line art on the chin. Wow, things are going a lot better. Now the eraser, hopefully not smudge up the sticky note.. Okay. Now we can finish coloring the hair.. Okay, isn't it so much better? It really was the face, and I guess I still have to use this for the blush, because it's there. Okay, so I've claimed victory over that.. I have yet to find a witch character that doesn't have the hat, so we might have to do that. Or a magic spell book or something.. She looks like she reads: Oh we could give her glasses. I don't know why that was my first thought after I said that.. Oh, that is cute. Something about glasses and space. Buns go together., Harry potter, glasses., Okay, it's fun, it's vibrant and it doesn't look too halloweeny, but it's also a witch.. So the challenge was to fill a whole spread.. Do I want to try that I'm gon na use a stencil. I have no idea.? I was about to write cute witch. Is that okay, I am gon na. Do it whatever.? I can draw a perfect little line.. It also has this, but I'm not entirely sure how you're supposed to like use the stencil., Maybe with the brush pen, to create those dots, because it's just not gon na be juicy enough. Yeah. Look that ain't working that ain't working.! Oh well, if you use the pen., I'm just like used to stencils being for paint, and so you like smudge on top., Not sure why I couldn't just draw this in but., Got a speech bubble, Hi. Alright, so we filled a little page, but I want more.. Oh bad idea, you know what we're just gon na keep drawing until I feel like stopping. Cute witch hat. Uh. Maybe her hands are on the hat sitting, all cutesy because she's a cute witch., Oh, maybe some flowers on it.. She could be like a garden witch.. I guess the hand might be more here-ish, then this hand might be on the other side. Cute, okay, something's working here., One way on the knee something's funky about that. But the overall scheme, I think, is working. Also high heels might be cute. But if we're going gardener witch gloves. Uh-huh got ta do gloves.. We could still do the tank top, maybe get rid of the high neck.. I kind of liked the glasses a lot, so I'm gon na bring those in here.. We could use that for some kind of composition. That looks like she has antlers. [ Laughs, ] Ooh boots for that muddy field. Maybe some like! Oh, what if it's not like you know like the mechanics wear like a onesie, you know what I'm talking about, but then, when you take them off halfway and tie them, and you have this big bulky piece of the shirt folded down and then you have these Huge bulky, pants eh. Even do a little like leafy stuff., There's something else. I can make her look a little bit more. Like a witch though., I mean the hat's gon na. Do it right, I feel like. If there's pockets, you could have more leafy stuff, coming out., Just refine. Some of these lines been good.. That is cute, but I feel like it needs. I don't know something. She's not actually sitting on anything.. We could put her on a little like gardening, stool and she's next to like one of those like raised gardens. You know, you know those things and then she could be sitting on a stool little cute like rounded witchy stool.. So it's like growing out of the ground.. I don't want to create a tangent there with the boot got, ta be careful., Cute dang, I like it and now I don't want to put these colors on it, because I just see it like reddish browns and like terracotta plant colors.. I mean what do I do? Okay, I've got two options here. Do I commit to the challenge and use the colors from it or do I use the challenge which brought me to this point to do whatever the frick? I want. Okay, I know what I know. These colors will not work with this, and so I am not willing to destroy it with that. So we're going to come up with another idea that does suit it.. Oh, we can use a sharpener.. Oh it actually works, really nice.. That'S a nice sharpener! Sorry for making fun of you. So she's like the gardeny witch. Maybe she only like grows the potion ingredients and then this switch is our potion girl, let's kind of figure that out. I'm thinking. If it's the potion person - and we want to look as different from this as possible and incorporate these colors um - I'm thinking scientist vibes like white lab coat. I'll keep those same proportions because those are really fun. Still, maybe the witch hat. I love drawing hats like that much easier than ball caps I'll tell you that much.! Now, if she has flowers on her hat, what would a potion witch put on her hat? Maybe like more roots., We got ta, give her a potion., We'll make them more rounded and have like bubbles coming out of them.. So we want to do like a lab coat. If we do, it's got ta be like swooshy right. We have like the swooshiest., I'm gon na have to look up what a lab coat looks. Like. Oh they've got like a pocket. I did not leave room for a pocket, but long sleeve seems to be the thing we could roll up the sleeves.. Maybe it's too swishy. If I want that pocket to get in here. Wait. I was thinking like that apron. Isn'T it like emperor's new groove? They have those like really long gloves that could work too. It feels witchy to me.. I mean I guess. Isma is very witchy., I'm just gon na add like cinched and then almost like a skirt lab coat, butt open and then do we have room for the pocket. Okay, it's coming along. I feel like I'm finding my groove. Goggles are cute. They kind of unwitch it a little, which is what it needs. Pockets.. What about like a pencil skirt? Is that a little too frumpy? Let me redraw this area. I don't think I like this collar for one.. I forgot I'm not gon na color this one because uh we got stuff on the back, but I like it., I'm gon na have to redraw it now.. We could do maybe a messier bun., Oh what about like a skull if it's like potions.. I honestly, I think the striped shirt's throwing me off. Let me take all this out. More youthful outfit.. I mean we could go with just the shorter skirt, so it ends like up here and the high waist. That does help. Doesn'T it Do? I want to do ripped tights, That's another thing. I don't think the older population tends to uh incorporate into their wardrobe. oooOooo. Okay, Oh yeah! These gloves are gon na, be like a fun color like this cobalt or something.. Yes, absolutely this would work really well for like line art on the glass., I'm gon na google potions ingredients see if there's anything else, I can like incorporate into the pockets or something. Oh mushroom. She could go with a mushroom too, but this is not about her Toadstool. Bat wings could give her a bat friend. It would be fun for like composition, purposes., Oh a big cauldron pretend this is like what we're drawing on have her like bending over the big cauldron fire coming around the outside. But what, if she's, smelling it like [ sniffing ], doing one of those like chef? Like a chef., This hand's behind her back., I really don't want to ruin this sketch. So we'll just stick that there. Honestly, I like this. I can just redraw it just put a little cauldron back here.. Oh me bend a little straight leg.. I feel like I'm still good at putting a potion in each hand.. Oh, we should make one a circle. Then it's Or a heart I mean that's a love position. Maybe have the lab coat jet out even more. Little pointy toes come up with the love potion on full display. Uh. I don't love the pose more than this, but I think just seeing this that I can be more fluid with like the lab coat and it might be more fun, so I'm just going to jump over here.. I do really like this pose, so I'm going to kind of copy that take the head roughly the same size as this one. One vial up here and another vial down here.. Do I want to make that one, the heart one, Whichever one's like the most lookitable look-at-able.? I had the eyes open, so I guess we'll do the same. Thing. I'm actually gon na draw the hat. First, coming up from the head little pointy stuff little mushroom.. I feel like a skull suits it.. Oh the tendril bangs, yes, they're staying. I don't care if you don't like them., Oh and the goggles. Love potion., Although we don't have a pink, maybe heart bubbles coming out of it. Oh cute., Maybe just make the pockets a little bit more cartoony and big.. Is that it This one's got more like composition., Which bits. I don't like. How spread the knees? Are. Just draw the same thing, a little less out there.. Alright, it's a little closer together.. I don't think it really solved the problem and I ruined the leg, but let's go ahead: I'm going to take the kneaded eraser lighten this up and start adding in the line art. I guess. I'm very nervous. Line art. Please thank you. Start at the topsy.. Alright, we need the skull.. Do we need the skull? I don't know, but it's happening because look yay. Goggles., Oh, I was gon na. Do the goggles with the blue line.. Should I do all the line art within the blue? How would that look Tendril bangs too, that would technically be underneath.. Okay, just do the exact same thing Ii, literally just did., Okay, not too bad. Yet do black line art.! It honestly doesn't throw it off quite as much as I thought it might. So we might be able to do that.. Excuse me, got ta. Take my vitamins. Bun straight line, another one and draw a rose again.. I think I need to redraw the hands. So I'm just going to erase everything see what we're working with.. It can be different. Heart shapes, don't love it.. Ah, this is hard. What if we just color first, because what if the rest turns out bad, Do I really want to spend three hours on these hands. Take a look at this. I really like the way. The purple looks on the yellow. It makes such a nice black. Um, but that's not an option., Although we made a very similar color by layering this and then that which maybe we want to try layer, this then layer, the purple.. Do we get black? It'S an interesting thought: it's definitely a less saturated purple.. I can see green boots for some reason like crocodile boots.. Do I need to make another one of these quickly quickly, I'll just kind of speed that process up.? I don't want blue gloves and we have the blue. This thing. Try purple for the top, because that was originally going to be black.. Maybe do highlighter for the skirt with the blue. Maybe for the pattern.. Is that cool It's a little hulk.? I could keep the lab coat white or we could make it green. Try green hat purple hair because I just pictured it being black, but we still have orange, but you know I'ma avoid this color like the plague, since I used so much purple.. Oh, when it's next to the green, it's not so bad. Just use it for like the stuff, that's like in pockets - and I wish I had some kind of pink for the potion., So they have some blue stuff.. We have these colors might as well use them all over the place.. I feel like it needs more blue. Green shoes. Make me really happy, though, so those are definitely staying.. I think the only thing I would change was not put orange on the skirt, so the skirt would just be this with the blue on top.. Oh, you can see what it looks like with green on top very nice.. Try all the colors. I don't know how many options we have., We got purple orange. I don't think I like and then blue, which was the original plan which doesn't look that different from green. So if I was going to do it, I'd probably use this because it's easier than the brush pen, because I just want to get solid shapes., I'm putting a lot of thought into this. Well, let's do the colors. I know I like, because I really like the green hat and the green boots. This is kind of water-based. You want to move quick. And the boots. Oh yeah, make it super bright.. I could make this look like alligator by adding texture and then layering some more darken up some bits: too. Hi alcohol based.. I do like these better. That'S for sure it is my comfort zone.. This can be for the reds flowers. Maybe this root. Try putting some yellow on top., Oh hair and the highlighter skirt.. This is the thing I'm like least happy with. Let me try one other thing.. If we can like tone down the amount of highlighter in this, I might be happier leave that to dry and we can work on this hand.. I feel like I can see something in here, although we don't need that., The gloves are gon na be colored that, but the liner should be black.. Okay, that's like a hand and the glass it's this color in a heart. Shape. Looks like a very large hand, but I'm okay with that, and then we got ta. Add some potion. Leave some white space on the outside for the glass.. Alright finish up this guy, which is not quite as done. The glove. Is that it am. I done coloring, Oh the skirt. I wanted to see if I could literally make this the stripes. The yellow, instead of the outside look it'll, be a lot more work and it's gon na be very hard to get this even because then it'll be a blue skirt. Right, but I could just use this guy, would that make it easier and quicker It's a slightly different color., it's a little waffley. I think, if I do that, it's gon na look more uniform, so we'll do that.. Alright, you win. You win first design. You always win. Also did we want to do the tights? I can actually just do that because it's erasable. Hmm, it's all right. That'S it's not going to win any awards. Ooh, that's cool! Do I want to just do vertical stripes. Just maybe add another a little Halloween, that's fine! It'S kind of how we got here in the first place and then we're supposed to do blush like I'm. Just gon na go through the glasses like right, where they need to be. Blue everything's, just literally blue under there.. This is what happens when you draw something transparent like I did in that three marker challenge.. Now everything has to look transparent. Just make some big heart. Bubbles., Oh and magic ta-dah Should I Oh. I could take like a really light: blue and color in all this.. Okay, now that I completed the challenge, I'm just gon na do this now.. So that's like the glass part then give her some kind of skin tone.. It might be too yellow, but it also might work.. I can just make a slightly darker, yellow color.. The black still does not like going being going over with what am I saying, I'm done, I'm happy with the face. I think it turned out really cute.. I really had to stretch my brain to be able to draw these hands and I feel like they turned out pretty well.. Do I need like a white gel pen for anything I think we're done.. I still love this. That might be my favorite.. I forgot this. Isn'T even my sketchbook, my brain was what is my brain doing anyway? Take a look-ski up close.. Here we have Oh, I look kind of like her better now that she's this close to my face. So here we have our potions witch and our gardener witch.. I had a lot of fun with all of these sketches and I think they turned out really well and I think it shows I did accomplish my goal and not make it look too halloweeny with the orange and the purple so somehow somewhere. That is a win, and then I also really like this sketch. Do you remember her And the chibi version, with the face that we fixed.? No, that was plenty. Anyway.
